Ten outta ten

This game I’ve had for several years now, it’s honestly one of the only games that doesn’t eventually become boring and even though it’s got a basic concept, there’s so many little things that make it great. It has to be said, that if you play for a few months and are still hooked, it’s definitely worth getting the no ads thing since it’s a cheap one time purchase, but even if you don’t, they don’t come on often enough to be too annoying, so I applaud the developers for that. Second, the game IS primarily single player, but when you get to a certain point you can join teams, and compete against other teams in weekly tournaments. You also get a team chat which is pretty nice, and some really high playing teams have like real life email chains or WhatsApp chats and you can make real friends that way. Also there are events throughout the week that let you earn cool portraits for your avatar, or butterflies that don’t really have a use but are pretty and you can name them stupid things once you upgrade them to the max level. Overall, the game is entertaining, has a broad spectrum of things to do, and it isn’t a money trap, all you need is skill and logic, and if you begin with none, I guarantee you Wordscapes will increase your proportions of both.

Love the game itself but there are many issues

I love this game and play it often. However, there are many things that could be improved. For instance, the dictionary of words this app uses is strangely inconsistent. The game allows you play certain slang/abbreviations such as ‘exec’ and ‘repo’ but there is no reliability about these types of words. The word ‘cred’ is not valid, for example. I don’t understand how they decide which informal/improper words are allowed and which aren’t. Also, the word ‘verde’ is playable but ‘bleu’ is not. ‘Yin’ is valid but ‘yang’ is not.

My biggest problem with this app is the fact that I have paid actual money so that I don’t get ads, but despite that fact, I still get banner ads on the bottom of the screen constantly. There is always an ad there and it often features flashing/distracting imagery or contains inappropriate themes. When I paid to get rid of ads, I paid to get rid of all ads. There was never any clear statement that paying to remove ads would only work for pop ups. This is extremely misleading and unfair. It is unacceptable to provide the option of paying legitimate currency to go ad-free and then not fulfilling that promise. Ad-free means ad-free. I have reached out to Wordscapes customer service several times about this matter and have been ignored every time. At this point, I want a refund if they’re going to keep putting advertisements in when I’ve specifically paid money to avoid that.

Played for years

Love this game, overall, and have now played for years. The docking of two stars is mostly for the misleading & disgusting ads they now show. Many are misleading, at best. Numerous are just scams, so beware. They are also inserted everywhere. Flashing at the bottom on a bar to starting randomly while you are playing. They have gotten so frequent and are so inappropriate, I’m about ready to leave this game. The game itself is fun. However, the longer you play, the more you see the redundancy in the words. There is also a HUGE problem with inconsistency. Many other reviewers have commented on this issue, so I won’t go too much into it. Basically, some slang is okay, most is not. Good luck figuring it out. I find this annoying. ALL words should be allowed, IMHO. If you are fine with random censorship, redundancy, and inconsistency in word choices, then it may not bother you. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The little animals are cute and fun. I really don’t see the point of them, too much. They are just cute. You are on your own to figure all the side bonuses/games out. I could not find instructions. Just learned over time about some things, like using bees. I still play, at this time😉🫤, so overall I enjoy this game. However, I’m not really sure if I will continue. If I find another, more challenging & consistent game, I will probably move on from Wordscapes. Again, been playing for YEARS, so kind of hard to break the habit.

Really Enjoy!!

So far I really enjoy Wordscapes. I’m on level 1356. So far, I’m familiar with the vast majority of the words. I especially like that the words are not rare and unusual. If they were, I would not play. The backgrounds are pretty. However, there are several things that clutter the screen. As someone else mentioned, a " coins full " message keeps showing, with an option to buy the coins you have already earned. I won’t do that. It’s annoying. If the words ever get so bizarre that I can’t solve them, I will quit. There are other pictures on the screen and icons you can earn, but they are confusing and useless to me, so I ignore them. Also, it's too easy for my finger to accidentally tap on the “help” clues that cost far too many coins. I don’t use them intentionally, and it’s very annoying when I accidentally tap on one and lose a hundred or more coins. It’s easy to look up help on the internet if you are stuck For me, though, if I ever find that I have to look up words, I will quit. I don’t mind using a clue once in a while, but the clues cost way too many coins, compared with other games I’ve played. All in all though, the game works well on my iPad 4th generation now that I updated to the newest iOS version.

Great test for spelling nuts, best word fun app out there

I don’t write many reviews but I just had to let other spelling geeks out there know about this game. I don’t know why anyone would give this less than five stars unless they found it to hard. Me? I search for games that will test me, push me, make me really think. If you love scrabble, words with friends or any of those games out there that require you to have a good knowledge of spelling, this game is for you. It doesn’t matter what age you are you will enjoy it. One of the things I liked best is that you don’t have to spend weeks getting through the easy levels to get to the good stuff. You can join a team (to compete in tournaments where all team members scores are combined, or where individual play is rewarded) you can chat with your team members from all over the world, and there are many games within games as well as progressively harder levels to challenge your brain. I happen to be an English Teacher for advanced students in Elementary school and many of my kids play this game. We can even keep track of each other. I know, geeky right? Geeks rule the world my friend! Not high school or early school maybe but the REAL world. You need this game, download it today!

Great game, but…

I’ve been playing Wordscapes for a few years now, so I admit to being slightly addicted! But over time, some flaws do show that lead to some frustration and annoyance.

Some puzzle words can be repeated 2-3 times over a few hours of play, yet others may not be seen/played for weeks at a time. I wish I could remember the exact words, but it’s happened multiple times for different words.

Another issue I have is with the Portrait events that allow you to collect sets of portraits that can be used as your personal portraits if you’d like. The events give you a special portrait if you collect all of the sets in the particular event — my issue is that, after playing some of these events for years, I cannot seem to collect all the portraits — there are always one or two that never see so the collection can’t be completed. And when I say years, I am not kidding! I’ve been unable to complete the Halloween portrait event for the past two years. Working on the Christmas event now and collected approximately 60 ‘gifts’ that revealed no new portraits over the past 24 hours. Looks like I won’t finish this event either unless I find time to play 20 hours a day to maybe collect these elusive portraits.

Simultaneously annoying and fun

Overall, well done, but the dictionary of words is stupidly frustrating, and it’s sluggish. The dictionary includes words like nan, which is not a word at all, despite the provided definition of naan, which is a word. Siesta is not English but it’s in there, while many other non-English commonly used words are not - be consistent, at least. Amnio is found in a puzzle but it won’t accept amnion. Amino is there but not ester (someone needs remedial chemistry). Bro, repo and other slang and abbreviations are also frequently used, which are not only annoying because they’re not proper English words, their use is just lazy puzzle building. Vino? Really?! Also, there’s a weekly game within the game in which you accumulate credits toward portraits you can choose to use as avatars. The thing is that they keep using those credits for portraits you already have, rather than giving credit toward new ones that need new credits. Frustrating and annoying. Having paid for ad free has made the game more enjoyable but flawed dictionary, sluggish performance and silly repetition in weekly games remain. They recently fixed an annoyance that was added a couple of months ago in the game to accumulate butterflies. Kudos for fixing your mistake. Adding back 1 star for making it fun again.

Old Version Better/Coin Issue

I’ve played this game for a few years now and noticed a disappointing new feature with the coins. In order to use them now you must purchase them. This was not a requirement with the old version and makes me consider deleting the game daily as the use of the coins used to provide you with helpful features like; revealing one letter of your choice for a difficult word, etc. It’s a bit illogical to continue to show us coins that we’ve earned through finding additional letters or for reaching a certain level, yet we have no access to them unless we purchase them??? It feels like a design flaw as you play and really makes me wish I hadn’t updated to this newest version. Other than that I would have given 5 stars but it’s such a nuisance I have to grade much lower despite truly enjoying playing the game. Suggestion: Get rid of the option to pay for coins per player's choice if you decide to keep the paid “earned coins” version of this game as most people are never going to bother purchasing anyway it’s like having a commercial running in the upper right corner of your television screen while you’re watching your favorite TV show. It cheapens the look and feel of the game. It feels like the game creators are begging for money as opposed to a real game which would never have a running advert in the corner.

Otherwise the game is perfect.

What happened

This game is great to relax to and play because of so few adds. The game play is mainly smooth some slowness here and there. I love how you also don’t get 100 and per minute! The add time I think is great and their not after every level too. My BIGGEST problem is that randomly out of no where my screen will freeze and I can’t do anything! I can turn it off, get calls or texts, or go to the home page! My phone won’t even turn off! The screen just gets dim. You will still hear that someone is calling texting but it won’t show up. I’ve tried all the tips and tricks to when your phone screen freezes, but they won’t help. It’s best to not do anything and wait patently for your phone to die. It’s happens out of no where usually when you are going to a next level or you’ve been in one for a while. This has happened twice and you can’t do anything until your phone dies. This has only happened within this app and no where else on my phone! This should really be checked out. Like I said, there’s nothing you can really do when this happens. It’s supper annoying and frustrating. Other than that this game is great! Hopefully this hasn’t happened to anyone else while playing! I was really getting into the game when this started to happen and I had to delete the game. Someone fix this please!

Ads are out of control

I play this game all the time. Or I should say I used to. I understand ads help pay the bills. Programmers need to eat, too. However, ads have gotten more and more instrusive as time goes on. They are now on a timer. Regardless of whether you’re in the middle of a puzzle or not. Forming your last word to complete the level? Ad. Trying to get that extra couple of stars by beating the timer? Ad. Close and reset the game? 10 second in….ad. Finish a puzzle? Ad. Start a puzzle? Ad. They were tolerable being before or after a puzzle. I could at least close and restart the game getting me back to the puzzles quicker. But during a puzzle with no warning? No hint at all that it’s coming? Intrusive and frustrating. Making ads not last so long (5 seconds at MOST) and NOT HAVING TO SIT/TAP-CLOSE THROUGH 3 LAYERS OF THEM would have been better. Some ads even force open the App store or Safari (regardless of if you close them or not) opening up all kinds of channels for viruses, spam hacks, or accidental purchases. How am I supposed to know this “advertiser’s” website is trustworthy? I’ve played this game for a couole years now as a form of relaxing and zoning out but not anymore. I can’t even do THAT without getting begged and hounded for money at every single turn. I’m not giving my money to a company who resorts to these kinds of measures, even if that means paying removes the ads. Ridiculous. I can’t recommend this game to anyone. Deleted.
