Tico3169,
A "must have" app for anyone who dines out with food allergies
If you dine out with allergies, AllergyEats has to be in your pocket or purse. This is the only comprehensive guide of restaurants rated on the basis of allergy-friendliness. Ratings are based on the reviews from others in the food allergy community, making this like the Yelp or TripAdvisor for food allergies. See the ratings, read the reviews, check menus, save favorites, reserve through OpenTable, touch for directions or a call - the features are spectacular, especially the ones added in this version. The Disney-specific guide is useful and the new NYC guide is soooo useful! Love the blog stories and critical info, and the annual Top 10 list is always great to see. Overall, so valuable. A "must-have!"
Idot123,
Could be better
The last time I used this app was in 2017. I recently read an email telling me to go back on so I did and I remember now why I stopped using it. It just doesn’t inspire me at all and there are no pictures of restaurants. Also, I mainly logged in to write a review for a restaurant that I’ve been visiting for the last few days. It is a new family operation that just opened their doors this year. I can understand how it’s not on here but there’s no way for me to add it. I think if google maps was integrated into the app somehow like I’ve seen some vegan apps do, it would make it a lot easier to search restaurants that are current. I am kind of disappointed I wasn’t able to leave a review for my favorite healthy sandwich shop and keep Allergy Eats going though. I really do hope the app improves one day because I know it can be the best. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next.
Yea for Me,
Good Tool for Allergies
I have been using this app for over six months now. It is a good tool for navigating places to eat with our daughter who has two severe food allergies. It currently has limited reviews, but adding to it and telling my friends about it with allergies in their families will help build it up. Metropolitan areas have the most reviewed places, but smaller towns are limited. I try to make it a point when traveling to add reviews. The quick questionnaire places a star rating value and you can choose to add info on your visit. If a restaurant is not listed, you can request to add it, which is nice.
Lnmangomom,
Great app - will be better with more users
The info on this app has made traveling with our food allergic son so much easier. We were directed to great restaurants that were happy to work with our needs and away from those that have been poor choices for allergy families.
Apps like this are only as good when more members join and participate. The food allergy community needs to support each other with this sort of information.
LilLunaLady,
Only helpful for single allergies
I can see how the rating system could be very helpful if you only had one allergy. However, with multiple allergies, it’s completely useless. The app shows any restaurant with reviews for any of your allergies, so you’re back to square one scouring the menu and calling ahead to figure out if you can eat anything. Even restaurants that show reviews for all your filtered allergies (in my case gluten, soy, and dairy), those are individual ratings. So everything that’s gluten free has one of the other two and so on and it’s still back to square one.

The only way I can see this improving to something actually helpful would be if the search function was a filter for menu items that don’t include your allergies. But as a rating/review app, if you have more than one allergy it’s as useless as yelp or googling yourself.
M_Shan,
Great idea, poor execution
Just downloaded and was disappointed. It’s outdated and most of the reviews are from years ago. It’s an app that relies on users leaving reviews, etc, but since it’s not a new app and has few users, most of the restaurants have zero reviews.

You can view rating based on allergens, but it must be a newer feature bc most restaurants just have a generalized rating.

Most importantly, the search feature isn’t very helpful. You can’t search on a map, it’s just a list of restaurants. And it orders them by “relevance”, name, or distance; you cannot even search by level of allergen-friendliness, number of stars, or even type of food you want!
ImaFAmama,
Useful if reviews available
This is a good app for FA families. When I tried it the first time though most of the reviews were around nuts. Not as helpful when you have multiple allergies. It looks like their efforts to encourage those of us with other allergies is starting to work. I would like more space to write my reviews. FA parents and FA people need details! Hard to provide them when the box lets you keep writing but you can’t scroll down to see what you wrote!!! Fix that and I’d say 4.5 stars. Just need more people to contribute quality reviews to get a 5!
FA family,
FA family loves this app!
What a great app for those with food allergies and their families. I look at it often. It helped us find a safe ice cream Restaraunt where we could safely take our peanut & tree nut allergic daughter with the rest of our kids for a treat. Those without food allergies cannot understand just how important that is for a family to safely eat out when they have to monitor all foods so closely.
Smurfette822,
Was great, now no longer works
I used this app for years, and it was very helpful in finding allergy aware restaurants. Last year I noticed that the restaurants were no longer up to date- lots of restaurants listed that had closed permanently, new restaurants not listed. I got a new phone recently and tried to use the app again. It will not let me login. The “forgot username/password” button never sent an email. I even tried making a new account w both Apple login & Facebook log in and neither was successful
Mayreeh,
Long time user
Updating my review and upgrading to 3 star. The search function on the app is reasonable and can pick up on my location.

Allergy Eats has given us the gift of safe meals many times. On the other hand, there is functionality that I feel is missing.

Key missing functions for me are the ability to search a larger radius and the ability to focus on number of reviews. We will happily drive 40 miles out of our way on vacation to eat at a restaurant that has many positive reviews on Allergy Eats. One trip to the ER after contaminated food more than covers the cost of a few gallons of gas.

I think it would be good to show chain ratings as well as specific store ratings. You can kind of get there is a chain is on the top ten list, but it would be good to see ratings aside from that as well.
