Version history

2.3
2021-09-20
A very big thank you to everyone who has supported Animation Pro over the last 4+ years! With Animation Pro version 2.3 you can now:

- Export videos in 'HEVC' and 'HEVC with alpha' formats on supported devices (please see https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT207022 for details)
- Quickly access all of the audio in a project via a new 'Audio List' button at the top-right of the 'Animation' screen
- Add one of nine new stylisations (e.g. pixellate, comic book, sparkle) to figures in the 'Figure Inspector'
- Control the order in which certain effects are applied in the 'Figure Inspector'
- Long-press a frame on the filmstrip/timeline to perform a quick copy or paste
- Long-press the 'Bookmark' button to see project details
- Tint figures using a new 'Fill' blend-mode (this will completely fill a figure with a given colour, including any anti-aliased pixels around body parts)
- Loop playback when viewing exported videos
- Scale figures more precisely (between 1 and 2x) in the 'Figure Inspector'
- Position figures more precisely (to 3 decimal places) in the 'Figure Inspector'
- Scale items more precisely using new X and Y scaling dials on the 'Item Adjustment' screens
- Choose to use higher resolution onion skins via 'Preferences' on the main 'Projects' screen
- Choose to retain the positions of the items within figures when performing figure substitutions
- Choose to retain deleted figures through tweens when exporting animations

Version 2.3 also includes a number of bug-fixes and specifically addresses an issue under iPadOS 15 whereby progress was not being displayed correctly for certain image exports.

2.20
2020-09-22
Version 2.20 of Animation Pro includes the following changes:

- All screens have now been standardised across all devices (this will allow Animation Pro to better support new devices in the future)
- It is now possible to select alternate aspect ratios (other than 16:9) when creating new animation projects

Bug Fixes:

- Bendable items - fixed the placement of the control handles
- Bendable lines - fixed a crash related to bendable lines with zero width
- Figure Editor - fixed an issue where the removal of the ‘bendable’ attribute could change the size of an item’s drawing
- Drawing (general) - fixed an issue where the reapplication of a distortion could incorrectly change the size of a drawing
- Figure Sequences - fixed a crash related to adding figure sequences, with tweens, with one or more groups enabled
- Figure Sequences - fixed an issue where the insertion of figure sequences could incorrectly add additional frames to the end of an animation
- Image Creator - fixed an issue where images were sometimes being saved with a thin black border

A big thank you to everyone who has supported Animation Pro!

- It is now possible to insert frames from one project into another in reverse order (by selecting a start frame larger than the end frame).
- The Apple Pencil may now be double-tapped to perform the function selected in the iOS ‘Settings’ App (under ‘Apple Pencil’) when drawing.
- It is now possible to perform up to 99 ‘undos’ when drawing. Redo functionality is now also available when drawing.
- Animation Pro will now resample large images automatically when drawing upon them (‘Animation’ screen and “Figure Editor’).
- The ‘Image Cropping’ tool now includes a ‘wand’ selection tool.
- The ‘Image Cropping’ tool now includes ‘undo’ and ‘redo’ functionality.
- The’ Image Cropping’ tool will no longer reduce the resolution of large loaded images.
- Flood-fill performance has been improved across the entire App.
- A ‘Frame Scaled’ option has been added to ‘Figure Sequences’ that may produce better previews under certain circumstances.
- It is now easier to display the waveform for figure audio on the timeline (and access the options for that audio)
- The ‘File Manager’ now allows either the ‘current’ or the ‘original’ version of images to be loaded from the iOS photo library. Loading ‘original’ images may help when it comes to retrieving images that should have transparency (as modifications and mark-ups may have resulted in a loss of that transparency).
- The ‘File Manager’ now allows images to be retrieved directly from the iOS pasteboard (a temporary location into which other Apps may paste images)
- And, of course, bug fixes and performance enhancements!

Version 2.1 of Animation Pro also introduces a brand new concept called ‘Groups’. ‘Groups’ allow multiple figures to be flipped, scaled, rotated or moved at once. This functionality will be further expanded in future releases of Animation Pro!

Previously…

Animation Pro version 2.0 now integrates drawing tools into the figure editor and the main animation screen making it possible to combine cut-out-style with traditional hand-drawn frame-by-frame animation!

- Draw the image items for your figures without leaving the figure editor
- Draw on the image items within your figures as you animate (or add blank figures to the animation screen and completely hand-draw them from frame to frame)
- Choose from (and individually configure) multiple new ‘Brush’ types
- See suggested mouth shapes and figure audio waveforms whilst drawing
- Move from frame to frame (or add new frames) whilst continuing to draw on the same item
- Quickly scrub between the previous/next drawings for a given item
- Easily rotoscope videos loaded as background images using the new drawing features

For more information, please refer to the new ‘Drawing’ topic in the Animation Pro help.

As always, a very big 'thank you' to everyone who has supported Animation Pro. I hope that you enjoy this update!
2.02
2019-12-02
This version includes the following enhancement and bug fixes:

1. A 'Force Threshold' setting has been added for the Apple Pencil (Animation Drawing View/Image Creator/Mouth Creator). This may be used to specify how much force/pressure must be applied (as a percentage of the total possible force/pressure) before the brush width (or colour) will change.
2. Tool sizes were not always being set correctly (tint/select/lighten/darken) when using the Apple Pencil - fixed
3. Tool sizes were not always being initialised correctly on the Animation Drawing View - fixed
4. The scrubber on the Animation Drawing View was not always showing images in the correct order - fixed
5. The non-display of an item (in the Animation Drawing View) was not always being respected when adding a figure to an existing frame - fixed

Luigis m. Lover,
Figuring out the ropes and a few suggestions
Hello! So Far, I've been really liking this app a lot! Especially with me being in school for mostly Animation!

The one thing is that, I wish we just had a regular brush tool when making the figures. I want to make certain figures but I want them to look smooth and not choppy and block like. It's limiting to me. 2nd, for the images, I can't work with just 5 layers, and you can't add anymore as far as I know. It would be amazing if we could have more layers, and if possible, be able to export those layers into the figure maker and add rigs to them so you could have an animation using the layers! I would honestly be using this app for every project if that happened! But for now, I'm trying to figure out how I can make one of my drawings look as good on paper as it does here XD
I'm sorry if I sounded negative, it really is a amazing app, but I honestly think it could be improved upon tremendously
Nkdeddyfastfrets,
Beyond excellent
I love this app. Just can’t say enough good things about it. Animation has always intrigued me. For nearly 3 decades I have been trying to get an animation program that I could learn quickly and express myself with. At first the computers were too weak, then things were too complicated, then everything was too expensive. Right NOW 8/18 with IOS 11 everything seems to have come together for me. The above issues are gone. Well you need to shell out for an iPad but that’s a no brainer since it gets used many many hours each day. Great fun actually being able to dream up an idea and then bring it to fruition. Animation still takes a lot of time but the results are beautiful, and there is a lot of feedback along the way. You can also combine AnimationPro with Pixomatic and for about 20 bucks you can have software that would cost 10 times that amount on a PC or Mac. Now is the time to start. The cost will go up as more people get hip to the deal. This is a Golden Age for IOS.
UnDterred,
Should be a $25 app
Scrolling through the other reviews, it seems as though most of the negative stars are based on the app’s steep learn curve. Yes, there most definitely is one with Animation Pro... but that’s a good thing!!! That means that there are a lot of features in this app worth learning.
I’ve really only scratched the surface but from what I’ve seen, thus far, the app is extremely well put together and the UI is beautiful and clean. It seems very capable and very responsive. I’m truly surprised that this is only $10. If this app had been $25, I would still be very happy with my purchase. Maybe people complain because they expect less from a $10 purchase and feel overwhelmed.
READ THE BUILT-IN USER’S MANUAL AND WATCH THE VIDEOS!!!
Without these you will frustrate yourself. Don’t blame the developer if YOU don’t read the manual.
If you want something simple to play with while in line somewhere, this probably isn’t the app for you. If you want to have a feature rich app (with mobile limitations but still badas*) to add to your animation palette then I highly recommend this one.
One thing, not a complaint but an item on my wish list; I hope there is soon a way to lift the export resolution cap higher, despite mobile limitations. Maybe if one used less effects and exported shorter clips, maybe? Just so I can fuse Animation Pro in better with my RoughAnimator/Affinity Designer/Lumafusion workflow.
Thank you so much for such a great app!!!
GadgetMojo,
Nothing even comes close!
So first I’ll say this app is not for everyone. Sad to see that the only people give bad ratings here are those who don’t understand how to use this app, and bought it without taking the time to find out what they’re getting.

Animations in general can be done in many ways. One way is to actually draw each frame and then piece those frames together and you get yourself an animation. There are several apps that do this. And the process of drawing each frame is very time consuming in all of them.

Animation Pro takes a different approach. It understands that in real world parts of a figure move in a specific places. Which places is specific to your type of figure, and you have to make it yourself. You can paint it in another app slice it and assign to a skeleton that you make. Then you can set your painted figure in motion. I was looking for something like this so was very happy to find it few days ago!
Ray96m,
Png sequence export! V.1.4
V2.3
The new pixelate filter is a game changer. Now I can do pixel art animation in Animation Pro!

V 1.5 Now has pallet saving! Thanks for listening! Still needs it throughout the creation process though. Tedious selecting exact color every time. Thanks for adding onion skin Some very useful features added in this update. Feature Requests - .SVG import (to use with figure creation) - Inverse kinematics? Old Review: All this app needed to rise above any competition was better export options. PNG export makes this a good buy. I use it with the Hyperpad game development app. Now this needs some motion tweening along curves. Pretty advanced animation app! A light theme would be good too. A bit of re-design and polish would help also. Took away a star. Needs a pen tool for Crop Image. Also we should be able to set a custom stage size or crop the render area upon export.
rpm 1989,
User help
I was very excited to try this animation app but have been very disappointed so far. For starters it seems all of your tutorials are done on a version different than the one that I have. Getting and navigating the ability to just draw layers is proven to hard. I’m putting in the time and am seeing no development.
I can effectively use Procreate and I taught that to myself. This program has some videos that are marginally helpful. I hope this has nothing to do with me using the smaller iPad. Overall I would like some help if possible. I really want to draw layers over video clips. I got the video importing down, now animating, the thing this app is supposed to do, is proving to be too hard. I will continue to work with it and would change my review but so far I see no reason. I really wanted to like this app, and it’s especially difficult because the Procreate animation is not bad just limited. This app seems to have less limits on how you can animate, but no real intuitive design.
Kindly Real,
Powerful, requires learning.
This app is brilliant, I understand frustration of not getting a cartoon done right away, because there is a lot that can be done in it but is not very intuitive at first. There is also some major room for improvement, my main complaints now would be that there is some bugs on the audio: the clicking sounds in the program sound on the iPad speaker even if on silent mode or if you have AirPods on, also if you try to use AirPods for music while using it, every time there is a sound in the program it pauses the music. A new, more modern UI would be greatly appreciated as well. Hope the developers see this and can update the app.
Auroraambria,
Many features but you better plan ahead.
If you add anything later, you won’t be able to go back through key frames and adjust on a timeline individually like you can in blender or core animator. Yes, you can tweak slides, but let’s say you add a character halfway through when you’ve already completed the sequence. Playing catch-up and adding that character means you’ll now have to go back through the slides and fix it. This animator is more like the onion skin type animators.

Another example, I tried to add a zoom camera angle after I had completed the sequence, and it was near impossible for me to line it up perfectly because there was no frame of reference from side to slide.

Otherwise, this app has everything you could want. Lip-synching, sound facts, characters, ET…
Still Looking For Perfection,
Confusing interface, inadequate tutorials
If not for the included figures, I would have rated it lower. I came back to it a year later—app got some new tools but as confusing as ever. If you want to create your own figures to animate, no tutorial takes you from start to finish— from creating, rigging, and finally using your figures. This is supposed to be a desktop-worthy app, but be prepared to spend serious time learning the interface & using the tools, and this is after you read the instructions and watch the tutorials. It’s target market appears to be folks well versed in it! Sad, it should be rated higher because it promises so much but gets in its own way and that’s the reason for its relatively low rating. Developer needs a focus group made up of newbies like me!
Jonkeek,
Very confusing tutorials
The tutorials fail to illustrate how a simple animation workflow is done, from beginning to end. It explains very well the menus and functions but it really lacks a very basic explanation of how a very simple project is done, for example bouncing a ball.

The program is highly compartmentalized and it’s really easy to get lost in the maze. Very confusing.

I believe that some users may find the UI easy to navigate but to the novice, it could be daunting.

I will give it 4 stars because I see great potential but at the moment I am a bit frustrated to the point of having considered deleting the app from my iPad Pro.

Please do a simple video/tutorial from A to Z. From creating an image in the appropriate module then migrate it to whatever may come next and eventually finishing in the animation module. Thanks.

**** Update ******* After spending a few hours with the app, I have concluded that it’s quite capable and if enough time is dedicated to comprehend its the rather unusual workflow, the results could be great. I’m giving it 5 stars.
