WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

BARD Mobile is a service of NLS. NLS provides free audio and braille reading materials to residents of the US and American citizens living abroad who cannot read regular print. If you are blind or have temporary or permanent low vision or a physical or reading disability that prevents you from holding or reading the printed page, you may be eligible for this program. For more information, visit https://www.loc.gov/nls/about/eligibility-for-nls-services.

HOW DO I GET STARTED?

This app allows access for eligible users who have enrolled in the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS) at the Library of Congress. To enroll, call 1-888-NLS-READ (1-888-657-7323) and follow the prompts to find your state. Or to learn more at https://www.loc.gov/thatallmayread.

-Keyword search supports searching all indexed metadata and can help users looking for multiple criteria. For example, to find a Terri Pratchett book narrated by Nick DePinto, a user can simply input “dePinto Terri“ (without quotations).
-After a user inputs a search, they can amend the search type, the inputted term itself, or the format (audio or braille), and sort results alphabetically by author, title, or latest publication date.
-In-app search now includes NLS Music collection holdings, allowing users to access the variety of musical appreciation and biography books, scores, and music instructional titles.
-Users can switch between audio and braille searches. For example, input “learn guitar” (without quotation marks) with the search defaults to find audio instructional titles, then select the braille format and the search button again to find braille titles. Version 1.3 includes a number of new features, including:

- Simultaneous downloads: You can now download up to three items simultaneously.
- Braille autoscroll: When reading braille books, you can have your braille display scroll automatically. You have full control over the speed.
- More actions button: The details screen for each book now includes an “ellipsis” button (labeled “More actions”) that offers a number of other things you can do with that book, including seeing a list of other books in the same series, by the same author(s), or in the same subject area(s).
- Enhanced actions list on VoiceOver rotor: You can also get to those very same additional actions using the “Actions” item on the rotor while in a book list.
- Quick switch between titles: No need to go back to the bookshelf to change books! Just swipe left with one finger (or three, if VoiceOver is on) while on the Now Reading screen to see a list of other books on your device that you’ve already opened. They’re in the order of most recently read. There’s also a “Recently read” button in the upper left if you don’t want to use the gesture.
- Format hiding: Don’t ever read braille? Tell BARD Mobile not to show you any braille items (unless they’re on your wish list or previous downloads). Don’t ever read audio? It works that way, too. Find this by going to the Settings tab, selecting User Account Settings, and then selecting Show Me.
- Book and magazine subscription support: You can now subscribe to magazines via the app just like you can on the BARD website. Book series, too! New magazine issues or books in subscribed series are automatically added to your Wish list.
- AirPlay support: There’s now an AirPlay button right on the Now Reading screen. From there you can send your audio to any available AirPlay or connected Bluetooth device.
- Braille/audio indicator: For lists with mixed formats (Wish List, Previous Downloads) there's a format indicator icon distinguishing format type so you know if it's audio and/or braille
- Save “jump by” setting with each book: The app will now remember how you had your “jump by” button set when you close a book and will restore that setting the next time you open it.

The release also includes internal updates and significant download reliability improvements.

Ashleigh Peach,
Bard. Mobile is not what it used to be for me.
Earlier, I guess around before the update, I could go into my wishlist and view the next book in the series. No, I don’t know where the next book is, even with the “more info, “button. I will have to go online now, to find out where the next book in “the wheel of time, “is located after. “the dragon reborn. “ this is not very good, but the bard app is still working for me. if you would like to know my router, advisors name, it is Megan McCormick. She is in the Jefferson City Missouri branch of wool from the library.

Problem with the mobile app on phone
Hi, this is Jeanne. I’m trying to figure out why I’m having a hard time. Logging onto bard with my iPhone 14 Pro. I’ve never had this problem before. It’s telling me to sign up like I’m a new user. I am not a new user! Has anybody else had this problem? Please let me know why I can’t sign on to the bard app with my cell phone. That’s why I gave this a little reading. Because it’s not working correctly!
Jeanne
PS, I have tried both emails. And they both turned red! I’ve tried my iCloud one, and my Gmail one. I think I switched back to the Gmail. And it’s not working at all. Not even my password. So again this is the reason why I gave this a little reading. Until this is fixed, I’m not changing the rating at all!
I wonder why this works on my victor reader streams? But not on my iPhone. Please help. Sorry for the long response.
savanna mcneely,
This app is amazing but
This app is literally my lifeline, and I don’t know what I would do without it. But, since this new update. My books haven’t been wanting to play. And sometimes when they do you want to play, it sounds like it’s all static he. I’m usually just able to press the sleep timer, to where I want it to go and it will work. But that doesn’t work anymore and I have to keep pressing play and pause for several minutes until it starts playing again.
mwitten3,
Get faster at adding books
I love this app. Don’t get me wrong. However, there is a book that came out yesterday. “The Sun And The Stars.” by Rick Riordan. Why is it not there? You probably have tons of Percy Jackson fans that have been waiting for this book for a long time. It is a disgrace and it isn’t fair because everyone else can access it right away on Kindle or some other reading book app. Why are we not able to access this book? you need to add this book please.
CAL121996,
This App is Great
I love this app and have used it for years, but the latest update was a huge step backward because it no longer allows access to the BARD web site within the app. I now have to go online to search for books by subject and some other category. Besides that, the app has truly been amazing and I have never had issues with it.
MacBobblestein,
Wonderful
There is nothing to dislike about this app. It is an audio book reader for blind and visually impaired people and requires an account with the National Library for the Blind. The controls are large and very simple. The book search system is not my favorite and could be improved, but at its heart this is a READER app. My search functions stopped working recently, but it turns out I just had to update the app.
Coton jo,
Bard needs help
Have used this app a lot in the past & loved it❗️. I am believing wind and really appreciate the work that is put in to this amp! It is a lifesaver for me, and has been so easy to use! Please keep up the good work for all of us left to read I can’t see the physical page! it’s nice because if we don’t like it, we can just cancel that particular book and go onto the next one!
Uvovovivk,
Dear producer
OK, so mom my name is Amelia I am half blind. I love this.
Because I can read the books like normal people however, I wish there were actual text so I can read along with the book like I said I’m half blind, not whole so I can still see some words, so would you write me back please? This is a really good app. Thank you for form making this for me.😎😎😎 you’re really good at making app
Flowalsh,
Great app
I love this app. I don’t even listen to TV anymore. I think the only problem is in the past couple of months, there’s hardly been any magazines or books put on the app. There’s also no way to filter out any books that have found language in them. Also series of books, in order, you have to figure out which one goes first, that takes a very long time especially if there’s 19 books in the theory. I wish you could fix that part.
AnonymsFan,
A hot mess
No matter how many times I have downloaded fresh version and on a platform that includes the most current version of iOS on hardware manufactured in the last 5 years, I never get beyond a constant request to reset password. The web site looks like something designee by a grade schooler using a ‘how to design and build a web site’ for ‘dummies’ published in 1998. A call in for support was answered by someone who clearly themself seemed digitally less literate. Come on, folks ..and please spare the ‘budget’ as the cause - the library could be drawing upon students in our public colleges to get this together.
