BENEFITS

BreathPacer is a powerful breathing guide that can help you achieve balance in your nervous system so you feel less stressed and more connected to the world. Andrew Weil, a leader in the integrative health field states, “If I had to limit my advice on healthier living to just one tip, it would be simply to learn how to breathe correctly.”

Use BreathPacer for 10-20 minutes a day and see why therapeutic breathing has been shown in research studies to be a treatment for depression, anxiety, asthma, stress, sleep, COPD, and hypertension. Paced breathing can also improve your concentration and sports performance!

BreathPacer’s unique autonomic balance setting helps you attain optimal balance in your nervous system by maximizing heart rate variability. You can customize BreathPacer to your own breathing practices, such as those used in yoga, meditation, and Qigong. Or by using specific patterns such as box breathing, 4-7-8 breathing, or others.

FEATURES

Despite the benefits, practicing slow breathing is not as easy as it seems. BreathPacer helps you practice proper therapeutic breathing with the following features:

- Smoothly animated visual breathing cues
- Soothing chimes to direct your inhales and exhales
- Optional calming background sounds
- Flexibility in choosing your own inhale, exhale, and hold pace
- Individualized autonomic balance breathing algorithm based on your height
- Breathing timer

Charley H,
Great idea
I own a Resperate which is a special little device for a couple hundred dollars that does something similar. This is VERY handy to have with me all the time. Seems to work pretty well. It would be nice to have a toggle timer that would allow you to set it for either no time limit or a specific number of minutes (15 or 20) so that it would stop on its own, once you completed the breathing session. I like to use it when I am getting ready for bed so it would be nice if it turned off on its own after the timer finished. I like the rain sound that it plays but it would be nice if there was a little more difference between the inhale and exhale sound or something so that you could know when you are at the end of the inhale or exhale from the sound. The visuals are great but if you want to close your eyes to do this, you have to pay attention closely. Well worth the price if you want to use this technique to lower your blood pressure and relax.

Simple perfection
I love this app, it’s clean, clear, with no extra stuff to bog down my brain. It just does the job. My go to before meetings and bed. Added perk, kids love it, a win win for emotional regulation and transitioning!
bananas1983,
Devs gave up?
This WAS great. Somewhere in February-ish of this year the app stopped having the ability structure breathing patterns (in,hold, out, hold) - the comments on the reviews seem to have been saying the same thing over and over again for months and no updates have fixed the problem. Would not recommend in its present form.
Mando nut,
A great tool for Raynaud's and other conditions
After a friend of mine was referred for thermal biofeedback training at Mayo for relief of migraines, I "googled" it to see if it would be helpful for Raynaud's (vasoconstriction to my fingers, toes, and ears associated with cold temperatures). In one appointment the doctor explained it to me, and tried a few settings with discussion I between each trial. After a few attempts, he found my"sweet spot" in which a 3-minute session raised my finger temperatures by5 degrees F. He suggested I buy Breath Pacer for my IPAD and wrote the numbers I should start at, working slowly to be able to slow my breathing even more during my sessions. I use it 3 times daily, and not only does it help my D's, but my blood pressure is decreased by it also. I would recommend this for people who have Raynaud's, migraines, hypertension, or who would just like to reduce their stress levels. By practicing with the machine 3 times daily, I find I can slow my breathing similarly when I am hiking I or doing other activities in cold weather, and help to increase the blood flow to my fingers while I am doing what I love.
Doctor.J,
Looking at the screen IS IMPORTANT!
I just got back from the AAPB conference (American Association for Psychophysiology and Biofeedback) where I learned about this fantastic app. During the presentation where it was mentioned (HRV for treatment of concussion) the researcher mentioned that subjects DID NOT IMPROVE significantly if they DID NOT LOOK AT THE SCREEN while breathing. Go figure. Next, finding your resonant frequency is quite important. This app will start you at a ‘best guess’ based on your gender and height. But to really know you’d have to measure your heart rate variability (HRV) and find the breathing pace which maximizes your HRV (the amount/range your heart rate goes up with inhalation and down with exhalation). So if you could figure out how to watch this paced breathing app while using something like the Camera Heart Rate Variability app you could objectively determine your resonant breathing rate. Also, you need to have a regular practice (like exercise) to continue to experience the benefits). Go for it, it may just save your life someday - better HRV is associated with increased survival after heart attack.
Tuckers Kahuna,
Great app for sleep and relaxation, lowering blood pressure
I have used this app for over two years, and it really helps get me to sleep at night. You can set how long to run it, and what your target brreathing rate should be. It's also very useful for stress reduction. There is a product for lowering blood pressure you can buy called the Respirate. It is a machine that measures your breathing rate and with heard phones and custom tones, gets your breathing rate below 10 breathes a minute for a set period of time. This is clinically proven to lower blood pressure if done regularly. Well, it's really easy to do this with the BreathPacer and it doesn't cost $300! My only criticism is that the sound of inhaling and exhaling are not that different, and sometimes it takes a second to hear which I am supposed to do. The rising sound and the descending sound are too similar and don't have quite enough differentation.
Another Colin,
Fully-configurable but needs sound cues
You can control just about every parameter of the app, which is really handy. Being able to choose your music, the sleep controls, etc. But as others have mentioned, it really needs to have sound cues that follow the currently selected breath timing.

It might be more natural to have the waves follow their own rhythm, but you're glued to the screen otherwise. In fairness to the developers it might be a bad choice between loading the app with a hundred different sound files, or the inability of the iPhone's chip to timestretch sounds .... still a great choice for a breathing app!
MFDOOM13,
Good App but it leaves room for improvement...
This is a good App but I was disappointed at the relative limited ability to customize the 'in' 'hold' 'exhale' part of the breathing. Say if you want to use the Relaxing Breath recommended by Andrew Weil which is 4 count in, 7 count hold, and 8 count exhale. You can do this on the App but it goes too fast for my comfort. I would rather customize it for an 8 count in, 14 count hold, and 16 count exhale, but the App doesn't allow you to do this. The hold portion only allows you to hold for 9.9, no further. Also, it's not really needed but I think it would be nice to have a big picture of the lungs on the screen instead of just the 'bars'. There is a small picture of the lungs but it's really too small.
redearthws,
Quite good...
This is a wonderful application to clear your mind and focus on the moment. Thank you, Larva Labs!

The only thing that I would like to see in an update is a change in the breathing meter. It is good at this point, but would like to see the meter as a solid bar, rather than incremental lines (which, as one gradually uses fewer breaths per minute, becomes jolting). I would also like to see the green display run out to the very edge of the screen - the white border starts to burn out your eyes after a while, even with the phone's brightness settings changed.

Keep up the good work!
Mjausson,
Great app with one serious limitation
If I'm able to stare at the screen while doing the breathing exercise, it works great. After 15 minutes, I feel incredibly calm and centered, not matter what kind of mood I was in before.

Thing is, I'd like to be able to do this while not staring at the screen. I need to sit in front of an acne light with my eyes closed for 30 minutes a day. Other reviewers have mentioned other perfectly ordinary scenarios in which it would be possible to use this app to great effect but they can't because they'd have to stare at the screen the whole time.

Unfortunately the wave sound that's supposed to indicate when to switch from breathing in to breathing out is completely useless. It sounds nice but there's no way I can tell from the sound what to do. I'm surprised the app was released like this. Even testing with just one user should have uncovered this major flaw.

Is it worth $3? I'd say yes but... It doesn't seem like the product is being developed any more, so don't hold your breath for a solution.
