Description

Deluxe generative edition of Brian Eno's acclaimed 2017 ambient album, Reflection.

"REFLECTION is the most recent of my Ambient experiments and represents the most sophisticated of them so far. My original intention with Ambient music was to make endless music, music that would be there as long as you wanted it to be. I wanted also that this music would unfold differently all the time - ‘like sitting by a river’: it’s always the same river, but it’s always changing. But recordings - whether vinyl, cassette or CD - are limited in length, and replay identically each time you listen to them. So in the past I was limited to making the systems which make the music, but then recording 30 minutes or an hour and releasing that. REFLECTION in its album form - on vinyl or CD - is like this. But the app by which REFLECTION is produced is not restricted: it creates an endless and endlessly changing version of the piece of music.” - Brian Eno

As a result of the Brexit-related fall in value of the British pound Apple have increased the prices of all apps sold in the UK by 25%. While we always intended REFLECTION to be a premium priced app, we feel this increase makes it too expensive, so we will take the hit in order to keep the British price to the consumer at its original level.

In other territories this decision will translate into a reduced price for the app.

As a thank you to everyone who has supported the REFLECTION app, we are adding a free surprise downloadable gift to it for a limited time. To access it, simply update REFLECTION in the App Store and follow the instructions when you open the app on your device. The download will be available until 28th February.
1.0.2
2017-01-17
This version includes a sleep timer and an icon that allows you to route audio to Airplay and Bluetooth speakers without leaving the app. Access these by tapping on the screen during playback.

The display now shows a wider range of colours, and a bug which on are occasions caused the images to stop changing has been fixed.

Special thanks to Kirk McElhearn for providing valuable feedback.

Emusette,
My new music player
After playing trope and reflection, I end up using them more than I do my music subscription services.
With the ever changing generative reflection, I don’t even have to press a button and I always have some new ambient going.
Occasionally I hear a sample repeat from time to time, but never the same music and the moods are always changing. With trope I have to start over the track because it isn’t ever-changing. With reflection you can hear it’s always bringing in new sounds. I have a large ambient collection in my iTunes library but I always end up back to this app. Thank you Brian eno for pushing the boundaries of iPhone
Pheonix_221,
Not much for the price
While I appreciate that this was suppose to be an artistic expression, and I usually blame myself for being duped into spending too money on something with little value, I feel a little blindsided by this app. Judging by the interactive experiences provided by previously released apps, I was expecting much the same here and was left completely wanting. The listener has no control whatsoever of the listening experience. Art, yes, I get it, but I could have easily put this piece on loop for free in Apple Music and not known the difference. My ear is apparently not discerning enough to care if there are subtle changes in the composition. Also, the “space frequencies” are absolute nails on a chalk board. I’m likely going to delete this app because I can’t stand them.
UPDATE:
While I’m still going to caution all comers about the price and warn them about the lack of interactivity, I’m here to admit that I have NOT deleted the app from my phone after all and have spent the last two weeks listening to it for most of my work day. It really is oddly addictive and very comforting. I’ve also found that paired with a nature sound such as rain or wind it makes an excellent study/focus tool that also blocks out background noise. I’ve even gotten accustomed to the “space frequency” sounds that have actually served to draw my attention back to the music and refocus me when I start to drift.
No Target,
Just calling it an app is akin to saying Falling Water is just a building.
It’s a brilliant app - but really to call it an app is to miss the point, it is an experience of a rare kind, delivered on an iOS device. A contemplative audio visual experience on demand. I rely on the audio during my NYC commute - a pool of calm in a sea of utter chaos. Some evenings l will stream it on my Apple TV- I have a quality screen and sound system so the image / sound becomes a beautiful live artwork- I actually like to keep the volume rather low (if your sound system is up to it) not just below audible, wink wink nudge nudge but low, it’s beautiful. Really.
DonRellman,
Unlimited app[lications]
Simply fantastic. This app is an art piece, generating random musical composition that defies category. Is it ambient music? Certainly not “New Age“ due to the depth of sonic expression and genuine creativity engaged.
Great for a bath with candles, a massage therapy session, just taking some time to space out, sleep aid… Virtually unlimited possibilities with this and all of Brian‘s apps. Splendid work, thank you. Worth the expense, not least of all because you can use it for years and years, just as I have with Bloom.
DreamPoliceWoman,
Wake up, fans. This is a Brian Eno album!
So glad I purchased this. It just keeps generating interesting variations on itself, each one unique in tone, pace, mood, but belonging to the same composition or family of music. All around the world, this app is generating a unique set of variations every day. This is the first album I've ever heard of that goes on indefinitely, is different every time you play it, and even changes with the seasons and time of day. Ha. Coolest thing ever.
Audiostar,
HomePod Stereo
This app is a work of art I will not deny that. I am running it on Apple TV 4K. Audio was a little tricky for had to tweak it from only running through TV speakers and not my Apple Homepods. I run my Homepods pairing 2 speakers for stereo playback and sound is only coming out 1. It’s a spacious playback but not as dimensional as hoped, as say playback via headphones. Be nice to upgrade app to have more control of audio stereo output. If anyone knows a fix, please feel free to share.
2B ORNOT2B,
A rarefied experience
This “thing” (i.e. I shan’t call it a mere App) returns one to one’s quiet center. If there’s anything more important than that, I haven’t yet discovered it in my 62 years here.

Is it worth the $’s? Is there anything else one values more than slipping away from the perceptual world? When one recognizes these two questions are the same, one will have reached a decision on whether or not to purchase.
jsolony,
Season Choices?
It’s a fantastic ambient music composition, and ranks among Eno’s best ambient work. But for the price, at the very least we should be able to choose between the seasons. I got it recently and therefore have “Autumn”. I would very much like to hear or see the differences in the other seasons, but they appear to be previous versions, no longer available in the app. Would the developer consider allowing the old seasons to still be chosen within the app? (If/when that happens, I’ll update to five stars!)
EJ Prior Lake,
The falling asleep app I’ve settled on
I enjoy falling asleep to white noise, music, etc., And I have tried a lot of apps with good success on quite a few. I balked at the price for this one at first, but it has become the one that never gets old for me.

I really hope that they Will make it available as an Apple Watch app so I can use it even when my phone isn’t nearby.
Kindofblue9,
Sonic Architecture
I have been going back and forth for the longest time whether to buy this since I have the CD. So today I decided to buy this, and after 3 hours, I have no regrets. I agree with the other reviewers - I would not call this an app. Between the music and visuals it’s more like sonic architecture. I really hope Eno and Chilvers do more of these.
