georgemachappy,
Well-done correspondence chess app!
The app does a great job of doing exactly what it needs to and nothing more. Lots of apps try to be too fancy, have too many burdensome features that clutter the UI, or find some other way to stray from the main goal. This allows you to play a nice game of correspondence-style chess with a move history and a clean representation of the current board. Well worth it.

The only reason I'm not rating 5 stars is because in my experience it doesn't handle multiple devices very well. If you start a game on your phone and move to your iPad, for example, iMessage has brought the game and the move history over with the rest of your messages but trying to make a move will give you a prompt to start a new game. Maybe this is just a bug and it’s supposed to sync.

I'd even be okay if they clearly handled the circumstance and just informed you that you have to continue on the original device. Of course, getting state sync to other devices would be even better!

Also others have mentioned that being able to preview the move before auto-sending would improve the experience — I agree.
Freon2222,
I messed up, but fixed now
I should not have download this app, I sure it is a good app for someone who uses iMessage but that's not me. Now I can not find it to delete it. I guess I will have to delete iMessage from my ipad to delete this app. The link that they talk about does not work. So I am giving this a 2 star only because it is my fault for installing this thing and it is their fault for not giving user an ease uninstall.

Ok I got it deleted with no help, it did take me a while to figure it out. But it is now deleted. I am changing my rating to a 4 star because this is not all their fault and this maybe a very good app for people who uses iMessage.
NIX365,
Great idea, good implementation
My only complaint is that I don't have very many people that want to play against me, but that's not the developer's fault. I won't compare this other chess apps I own (because it would be a dumb comparison) but I like the idea of casual games played via messaging. I'm continually amazed at the creativity of iOS developers and what they can concoct and this iMessage application doesn't disappoint in that regard.

I'm really only adding this review to counteract all the 1-star review people that apparently never passed elementary school reading curriculum and don't understand how their smartphone works. Keep on keeping on developers! I look forward to seeing what you deliver to us in the future.
Pokemon - Like,
Great Chess App. Convenient. It's in iMessage
I like the app and I myself love chess and have been playing it and have been in a chess club. I think it's a great way to play chess with people who don't want to download any real time and data consuming apps. So to all the people who are saying it's collecting data etc. it's not, it's an extension in iMessage just like the Gif extension and music extension. So it should not be on the home screen but should be in the iMessage. It's a good concept because you can send the game and get notified when each other move. (P.S. you can tell it goes to iMessage because of the way the image of the application looks, unlike a regular app as a curved square it's a curved rectangle.
Barry4006,
Loved until
I loved the app until suddenly while playing the app would start making moves for both sides without human interaction by me or my son. Apparent the App was hacked either by a person or autoplay computer app and would continue to make moves and remove pieces on its own. I uninstalled and reinstalled with the same result. We would make a few initial moves, then the app would start making it’s own moves. We checked both phones with security software and could find no breaches. The only recourse was to remove the app permanently rather than allow 3rd party control.

Too bad, it was a good way to interact with my son from a distance. I can only conclude a malicious actor exploited some feature that allowed access.
shipz dude 555,
At first great...
I initially downloaded this app and really enjoyed it. Very simple and easy to use, as well as having a wonderful looking interface.....but I recently updated the app and was very disappointed to see that I can no longer preview my move because it automatically sends it to my opponent.(it could just be me, but it seems as though it doesn’t run as smoothly with the new auto-send system) If the method of sending your move could go back to the way it previously was, I would say a perfect 5 stars again.
ManicTurt1e,
LEARN HOW TO READ PEOPLE !!!🤦🏻‍♂️
This app is great very simple and only in iMessage so you won't have to worry about playing a free game with ads or have to spend "energy points" to set up a match with a friend. This is just how every simple board game should be easy to use and ready to play with any friend without a haste.

I really can't believe how many people rated this game down because it apparently "disappeared" from their phone. It's like they just see a free app, download it, and won't even bother to notice that it clearly says "For iMessage Only" 🤦🏻‍♂️SMH people
AndersLeet,
For all of the non-tech-people
The app is great. Works as intended.

If you know how to use your device, it is easy to remove this application. A lot of reviews are giving this app negative ratings because they cannot figure out how to remove this app.

It is an iMessage only app. To remove this (or any other iMessage only app) this is all you have to do:

1) Open the Messages app
2) Tap the '>' icon to the left of the input box
3) Tap the third icon that looks like the App Store logo
4) Tap the four bubble icon in the lower left corner of the screen. ***This is how you access any iMessage only app*** Tap to use it
6) If you want to delete one, long hold on any icon to get the apps to 'wiggle' and the X icon will appear just like on the springboard

RTFM people (that's 'Read The F%#$ing Manual'). It isn't difficult. Stop putting out negative reviews because you are technologically inept.
Kallism,
A FFun & Easy Way To Play Chess With Friends Over iMessage!
As the title says, this is super easy way to play chess with friends over iMessage.

I've been trying to get my boyfriend to let me teach him Chess for years and this was easily accessible enough to convince him to try it.

Thank you to Apple and the developer for featuring this in the App Store and making it a free app. Totally a must-have for others looking to play Chess with their friends who also have an iMessage capable device.
mandyvan,
Restart iPhone if icon doesn't appear in iMessage
Open Messages app (texting).
Open a conversation or start a new one.
If you don't have the Messaging Apps button (looks like the App Store "A" in an oval), press the Show more icon ( looks like a greater than sign ">").
Press the icon in the bottom left corner. The icon has 4 ovals arranged in two columns and two rows of ovals.
Swipe through the list and look for "Checkmate!" If you don't see it, swipe to the beginning of the app list and tap the + for Store. Tap Manage. If you see Checkmate in the list, turn it on. If not on the list, restart your phone and it will show after restart. I also allowed Automatically Add Apps but I don't know if that was necessary.

Happy Chess Playing
