Description

Chomp helps you find food that's compatible with your diet. We check the ingredients so you don't have to!

Simply search for food, or scan a barcode, to instantly check if the food has any ingredients you're avoiding.

We automatically determine if food is vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, or if it has any ingredients you want to avoid.

Chomp also lets you enter your own ingredients to avoid. We then tell you if we find that ingredient in the food. This is perfect for vegetarians who want to avoid eggs, people with peanut sensitivities, or anyone who just wants to avoid an ingredient or two.

Chomp is built on an advanced diet-grade algorithm that checks for ingredients that have been identified as not being compatible with vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free diets. We show you what ingredients our algorithm flagged, and why.

Our color-coded diet grades show you if we found any ingredients that you're trying to avoid.

- Green: Indicates that we are confident that the food, or ingredient, is compatible with a diet.

- Yellow: Used when we are uncertain if a food, or ingredient, is compatible with a diet. Yellow is also used if we’re missing the data we need to make a decision.

- Red: Represents that we are confident that the food, or ingredient, is not compatible with a diet. These are foods with ingredients you may want to avoid.

Chomp empowers people to eat better, avoid certain ingredients, and learn more about what's in their food. We also help you discover vegan food, vegetarian food, and gluten-free food so you can better follow your diet plan.

We answer the following questions:
- Is it vegan?
- Is it vegetarian?
- Is it gluten-free?
- Does it have any "bad" ingredients?

Our algorithm is continually being improved and is very accurate. However, we always recommend that you double-check the ingredient label. If you do notice any discrepancies or errors, please contact us.

Version history

1.2.0
2020-03-13
We opened up Chomp to everyone by allowing you to customize the ingredients we check. Add ingredients you want to avoid and we'll let you know when a food contains it.

We already check for 650+ ingredients to see if food is vegan, vegetarian, or gluten-free friendly but now you can add your own ingredients. This is especially helpful if you're not vegan, vegetarian, or avoid gluten. Now you can use Chomp to avoid ingredients that you have sensitivities toward or to just avoid an ingredient or two.

You must be logged into a free account in order to use this feature.
1.1.01

You can now sign in to Chomp using an existing account or create a free account in just a few taps. Creating a free account is not not required but does let you personalize your experience.

Here are a few more features that we added:
- You can now set your diet so search results are more relevant.
- Enable "strict search" so you only see diet-friendly foods.
- Filter search results to only show food that's compatible with a specific diet.
- We added "raw" foods to the search results (apples, bananas, etc.).

1.0.15

We significantly improved the layout and typography across the entire app. The Ingredient Guides have been revamped and will not load ~2x faster.

We also implemented a fix for how the diet grades were being displayed for some foods. You'll now see a message when we're not able to grade a food.

The actual food pages have also been improved. The layout was too dense so we added more space between each section (ingredients, allergens, nutrition, etc.). We also added a section that displays any ingredients from palm oil that are in the food as well as the countries where the food is sold.

The page you see if you search for a food and nothing was found was also improved. The page was pretty plain and didn't provide too much information as to why nothing was found and what we do about it. We are alerted whenever someone searches for a food and nothing is found. We then go out and try to add it to our database. A few "tips" on how to search were also added.

We took a look around the app and realized that the wording could be refined here and there. The "Info" screen now includes more detailed information about our food and ingredient grading process. A link to review the app was added to the "Links" section, too.

We also added an option that allows you to opt-out of anonymous analytics. We use anonymous analytics to figure out what features are import so we can plan for future updates. However, we understand that not everyone wants to participate.

That's all, for now! Keep on "Chomping."

Bngbngshootshoot,
Good concept.. not too helpful
I’m vegetarian and it’s tough to figure out if foods are safe to consume or not. I was excited when I heard about this app.

Unfortunately I haven’t had much luck. Most of the items I’ve scanned, it says item not found. And when it does come up it says that a product “might be vegetarian”. Now I get the reason that its tough to determine from the products ingredient listing(as the fdc doesn’t require foods to specify if an ingredient is derived from an animal or not), but “might be” just isn’t all that helpful. When you’re vegetarian you can’t trust items that “might be vegetarian”. That’s kind of why I downloaded this app in the first place.

So this app “might be” useful… but it hasn’t really helped me too much with the few products I have scanned. Nice attempt though.
aim gurl,
Not good!
It really doesn’t tell you if it’s vegan, vegetarian, or anything else. It just says maybe for every single item that you search up. Like literally it will always say that there’s a possibility if it’s vegan or vegetarian but it never actually tells you if it really is.
Molly10293,
Amazing!
Chomp is really helpful when I’m grocery shopping. Being able to scan a food and see if it’s vegan has been a lifesaver!
