CeciTigre,
Spoonful is a great help in going Low FODMAP
I had been researching all the vast areas related to understanding FODMAP, what it was, what it wasn’t, how to understand the role it needs to play in my daily life, how to EVER be able to buy groceries without spending HOURS at the store trying to read all the ingredients on all the items I needed to buy, then have to put those, bad for me items down and find the energy- mentally and physically- to find replacements that were low FODMAP. Yea, I spent over 1 1/2 weeks researching my self into depression because I just haven’t that kind of energy. Then I came across the Spoonful site and learned about their app. Needless to say, I was absolutely excited that one single app does all that work for me! I just use the scanner in the app and scan the grocery store items I want and I find out then and there if I can eat it or not. There are alternatives listed in the app to tell you what to replace that item with. There are items that are not in the Spoonful database of products, which I am more than happy to take pictures of the packages list of ingredients, the front of the package, nutritional section and its barcode and submit it to Spoonful. Spoonful takes action immediately to add the new products and notify you immediately as to that foods rating, let you know it’s been added to the data base and available for every one who scans those foods. I am truly grateful to Spoonful and their app. You can’t go wrong with their help!
PhelineCat,
My fave list?
I haven't been shopping since I picked this up a few days ago- Where have you been‽ - because I'm immunocompromised. Also my (IBS) gut is absolutely miserable so I don't want to eat or drink more than particular granolas and drink green tea and I'm well stocked on them. Instead, I've been scanning what's around, including OTC meds, etc. Enlightening. (Nary a crash- the woman having crash issues might want to poke around at settings, get rid of location tracking, background refresh, automatic updates, etc when they're not needed and delete apps she's not using. She may want to check her battery use; what's running in the background?) I'm sure you all know it's not as easy as just buying gluten-free because pear juice is in some bread, mannitol is in Bean-o (Bean-zyme to the rescue!) My faves though- why can't I just plop something into it from general lists? Or can I? I don't see how. Please help.
Victoria Palmer,
Low FODMAP not accurate
I’ve been using this app that I paid money for about two weeks now. At first, I was relieved to have it. But I have found it to be pretty inaccurate a lot of the time. And not always user-friendly. But now today I know for certain that it is definitely not reliable. I put in pretzels in the Spoonful search engine. For those to be low FODMAP they have to be gluten-free. Each ingredient in the pretzel also needs to be low FODMAP. (The Monash app gives more detail regarding Low Fodmap ingredients.) After putting in pretzels, the Spoonful app gives many items a green checkmark. at a glance, I was hesitant that these items could all actually be low FODMAP. When I clicked on the ingredients, they were not listed. Many items that got the green check mark were like gift baskets that had pretzels in them. For these gift baskets of pretzels and meats and cheeses to be low, FODMAP, the meats would have to be onion and garlic free. No ingredients were listed for any of the items. I googled one of the pretzel brands to see what the ingredients are. First Ingredient is wheat. Not low FODMAP yet spoonful was giving it a green checkmark. A notation that is supposed to indicate that you can sagely eating that food. Spoonful cannot be trusted.
Schwann240,
Very Useful Apo
I started a low-FODMAP diet about 6 weeks ago and Spoonful has been a lifesaver when I’m shopping for food, since the FODMAP universe can be a bit overwhelming. I use the scan feature all the time to check whether an item is ok for me. And if an item that I’m scanning doesn’t come up in the Spoonful database, you can easily submit it for them to analyze it and add it to their database, and they are really fast about doing this! Their support team is great—very responsive and helpful. My one gripe with this app is that for many items which have ingredients that are either low or high FODMAP depending on the serving size, the reviewing nutritionist often refers you to the Monash app for details on portion sizes. I wish they would just give the details right there rather than send me to another app. Thanks, Spoonful, you’re doing great work!
Are u awsome,
Best find so far
After doing some research on what FODMAP is, I found myself so confused! Thank God this app is around! I’m a newbie and the doctor recommended I start this low FODMAP diet to see if it will alleviate IBS. So as a newbie I went shopping and tried to buy things I thought were low FODMAP by looking at ingredients. Well, needless to say after finding this app on one of the articles I was reading, I began scanning the things I purchased and over 50% of the stuff I bought was high!!!! Ugh! I’m just so grateful to this app is around so I can truly see if low FODMAP diet works and hopefully feel better. So far the scanning and search engine are working with no glitch! A little slow but it works! And I’m super grateful! Thank you!!!

Update: Saturday and it’s not working!!!! Noooooooooo whyyyyyyy the weekend is when it’s needed the mos! Pleaaaassseeee make it work!
MistaSavvy,
Amazing app
I’d advise you to use this app as an additional tool in helping more quickly figure out if you can or can’t safely eat something. I still closely read ingredients on food I buy, if this app greenlights it. But, it saves a lot of time by barcode scanning and immediately showing me suspicious or no-go ingredients.

On one hand, not all data is 100% accurate. But on the other hand, this app has saved me countless hours of standing in stores Googling. And, I found if I report an item as having inaccurate info, the support/dev team is super quick in not only updating/fixing the data, but also in messaging you to say thank you for helping keep data accurate.

At first glance it might be easy to focus on all the missing data for misc lesser-known products. But honestly their database is impressive. There are even locally-produced food products that I’ve even found in the app with accurate info attached.
The longer the app is alive, the more data it’ll have for us to reference.

This is a very impressive app and being low fodmap, gluten free, and lactose free, I’m thankful for Spoonful and I’ll be using it for as long as my body has me eating so carefully (1.5yrs and counting).
TravisP_Indiana,
Best app for FODMAP diet
Spoonful is immensely helpful when I’m in the grocery store and needing to quickly know what FODMAPs are present in processed foods. There’s even info from licensed nutritionists for a lot of items. If you find a product is missing, you can suggest it and they’ll add it to the database.

This won’t tell you what particular foods like apples or Swiss cheese have; the Monash FODMAP app does that. But Spoonful will tell you what is present in say Mott’s applesauce. Spoonful and Monash apps go together very well.

The one thing that would put Spoonful over the top is to add restaurant menus so I can know what is safe to order. I’d also appreciate a filter for lactose-free. There is a milk-free filter, but lactose is a much more helpful category for me.
Caseseyo,
No return info
In the 4 months I’ve paid for this subscription I have never ever EVER had anyone get back to me via email with details of things I’ve submitted !! I’ve spoken back and forth with the support account several times about this to no avail & as nice as he was each time (it was always the same fella), I have as of 5 minutes ago canceled my subscription and frankly, I want my money back & don’t think it’s unreasonable to say so. I doubt they’d do that but I sincerely feel scammed and don’t understand how I am getting correspondence from him but no one ever emails me back about my product info scan submissions & it can’t be an issue of mistyping email address because you have to retype where you’d like them to contact you each time!! This 2 day window must be a 2 year window because I do not hear back from the nutritionist ever and it’s very frustrating! I’m a vegetarian with ibs, I thought this app would be a godsave but all it’s done is upset me.
wildswan,
Useful app, could use a lot of improvement.
Please make this app work any direction a tablet is facing, particularly in landscape mode; the app is difficult to use on a tablet that has a case that is designed for use in landscape. This app is super useful for IBS sufferers, and I don’t mind paying for it, even though the monthly/yearly payments seem gouging, but at least fix your database, search function, and make the design responsive to landscape and portrait mode. I’ve only used it a few days and noticed some items have the wrong photo, or wrong title, or missing information like the brand name in the title for searching (even though the photo shows the brand name). It would also be nice if the app could remember my search settings (ie, for all products, or compliant, etc) since I’m logged in.
Grandma Sayito,
Fodmap support
I saw a dietitian for the first time who told me to try this diet for a month. She handed me a couple of papers which said what not to eat and what was ok to eat. I was on my own after that . I was not used to reading entire food labels. I just found this app yesterday and then found the Facebook group. I I spent three hours at three grocery stores yesterday and had no idea what to buy. Thanks to this app I can scan the items and find out if they are low Fodmap . I came home with two loaves of sourdough bread which I can’t eat and the ice cream had hidden apple in the ingredients. I wish I had known about this app and group two weeks ago!
