Game Dame 1,
Finally an app that helps me!
When I was first diagnosed with diabetes my diabetes coach showed me this app for tracking purposes. It allows a lot of flexibility in what you want to accomplish for weight loss. It helps you to really realize what you are consuming on a daily basis and also keeps you on track with drinking plenty of water which is a key to weight loss. You can track carbs as well as calories and fat so that you can make better decisions for meal planning. It allows you to put in a recipe of your own and add a food that is specific to what you are normally eating. I have already lost 20 pounds over the last month and it is refreshing to see that I am finally on the right path and not following some fad diet with little direction. Basically the key is to consume less calories than you burn a day and you will lose weight! Good luck everyone!
Fairy-Dogmother,
This app needs work
I am still using this app, despite that it is maddening when it comes to recipes. When I’ve entered a recipe and, a few days later, want to tweak one or two ingredients, I can’t see the ingredients or make changes. So I have to start from scratch and enter all the ingredients again. When I’ve been creating a recipe and want to enter an ingredient that isn’t in your database, I try to create that ingredient, but then I lose the recipe and all I’ve entered into it. And on that subject, your database of ingredients is woeful. Some common things, for instance from Trader Joe’s, are not in the database. So I am constantly creating new foods. I am spending way too much time doing this – so frustrating that it makes me want to overeat. That’s exactly the opposite of why I am on this app.

The other problem is in the exercise section. I do a long stretch routine daily, but there is no option on the app for stretches. Or maybe there is, but there seems to be no list where I can choose stretching. And if I add stretch, stretching or anything similar, nothing comes up. That is a motivation killer.

I was a Weight Watchers member for years and used their app, which does not have these problems. Of course, you pay for it. But I think this app can do better and still be free.
~ElleBelle~,
You get what you “pay” for
I’ve been using this app for about two weeks. I wasn’t particularly worried about losing weight when I started; I just wanted to get a better understanding of what I was putting into my mouth. If you are looking for a general overview to gauge your overall eating habits, then this app is fine for that. Where it falls short is that it’s not really conducive to home cooking. There seems to be an encyclopedia of information related to popular take out chains and favorite supermarket brands, but very little information for fresh, home prepared produce. Examples include steamed broccoli (only an Applebee’s side dish matched this entry) or baked Korean batata (a type of sweet potato). This app also doesn’t cater to more exotic cuisines, such as Ukrainian borscht or Pad King (a Thai ginger dish). You can destruct your home cooked dishes by listing comparable ingredients individually, but that just creates a lot of unnecessary time and effort. At some point a person is bound to get frustrated and bored by this cumbersome method of food tracking. Considering that this app is free and you are not looking for rigorous calorie counting, just rough estimates to reshape/understand your eating habits, then it serves its purpose.
Kdrathedragon,
It’s only the beginning...
To be fair, I only downloaded this app last night but I wanted to share my appreciation for it so far.

I was tired of using myfitnesspal. I never liked the design of it much and I just never seemed to lose weight or feel any type of success. However, I need to track cholesterol because that suddenly became a thing I had to worry about and the majority of other tracking apps made that impossible without paying. Therefore, I really, really, really love CalorieKing for not just tracking macros AND for letting me choose what I want to glance at quickly when I open the app. I don’t know how well my weight loss journey will go (that’s on me), the ease of seeing nutritional details is wonderful. The design is lovely and I certainly don’t mind adding in food details.
I also know some days I will be in a rush out the door or into bed but I need to slow my add down anyway.

Another thing I love about it from the start is I can put in recipes. I am always cooking, baking, and I love trying new recipes. I haven’t used it yet so I don’t know the pros and cons, but the fact that it’s there and so easy to find got me stoked.

The only thing I wish it had a button for is syncing with my Fitbit. That way, the steps and exercise I do get in a day goes right into my calories burned and vice versa. This is the only critique I have at first glance.

I’m excited to get more into this app and look forward to little changes here and there.
Dr. Triumph Tim,
Very helpful to track food intake and activity
I’ve been using Calorie King for 13 months now mainly for tracking food intake and I’ve lost almost 60 pounds. Since I’m tracking Carbs, fiber, protein, calories and fat I’ve been able to manage each of those categories and have been able to get off my two Metformin pills and Lisinopril that I’ve taken every day for the past 10 years. My Cholesterol and Lipids are way down and my Testosterone has increased back into a normal range. My A1C is 5.4 which is the lowest it’s ever been and that’s after stopping all the Metformin. In conjunction with Calorie King I use MapMyWalk by Under Armour. My goal is about 20 miles per week and have been able to do that for the past 13 months. I’m 6’3” and 240 pounds down from 300. I’m 70 years old. I highly recommend Calorie King and MapMyWalk for tracking food intake and exercise.
weedman4,
Lost 28 lbs using this app
I have used this app for several years. Like most dieters I have gained and lost many pounds. With the Covid 19 virus staying at home, I decided to try it again. I like this app because it is easy to enter your food and exercises and it keeps track of everything. I also like it because I cook most of my own food following a recipe and this app lets you to calculate the calories and nutrients per serving, as well as entering new food types which are stored. So far I’ve lost about 28 pounds and am close to my goal. I recommend this app to anyone who wants to lose and track your weight. I am now trying to maintain my weight and I continue to use this app to track my food intake and exercise. So far, so good.
Mongo25568,
Keeps getting better
I have used this app for several years now and find it very helpful. Their upgrades over the years have made it much more user friendly. Since I travel a lot internationally and use different phones, I like that, once logged in, I can input my data for the day onto one phone and it will immediately show up on another phone, as long as I am logged onto the same account. Also, I like being able to input customized foods, for all those good German and Hungarian foods I eat.
The major downside I have found over the years is that you must spell entries exactly like they are in the app’s database, otherwise, the program will not recognize your entry and may give you a “no results/matches”, that can be frustrating for us spelling “challenged” folks. Obviously, this has not stopped me from using it.
Like any calorie counting app, YOU MUST USE IT TO BE EFFECTIVE!!!! Good luck:-)
LiteraryPenguinLover,
What happened?
This app used to be user-friendly you could look some thing up log it in the journal and if you didn’t have it you could into the information yourself that’s the way it used to be. now it has almost nothing in the database it doesn’t log that well you can download the other part which does have food information but when you trying to log it on theFood log out but it does not load the information from the food information app. So I hope this gets red by the user or the programmers and they fix this problem otherwise I just used up memory on my phone to download two apps that don’t even work together and if it continues to be a problem I will find a different analog logging app. One that actually has a database that coordinates with the food log. I hate to leave a bad review but I really liked the way it used to be this new way is very not user-friendly and I am disappointed in app now.
Trisha-Nicole,
Easy for me & visually motivating!
This is my first calorie counting app. It’s easy enough that I don’t tire of using it and can keep up with my routine of counting carbs fats and calories. I am not focusing on precision, so it doesn’t bother me that when I went to Crocker Barrel restaurant my entree did not populate in the search. Rather, I just put in a similar item. I stumbled CalorieKing app when it popped up as a suggestion as I was googling carbs amounts for various food. It’s much better than my google method of keeping count. I really enjoy this app and hope to reach my goal of 175 lbs. I also love that CalorieKing tailors my nutritional limits & exercise amounts to the personal goal I set! It gives a visual reminder everyday with it circle chart.
Coco crisp 123456789,
Work needed
I do enjoy this app but work needs to be done, for starters the food, your selection is VERY select, I find myself constantly having to add food and cause more time In my day and on top of that i don’t know know if is accurate, second the exercise section, I love the front page how it tells you how many calories you ate, water drank and how much exercise but it is so selective again the bare minimum push-up walking running and sits ups basically, then when you go to add your own workout log it only asks how many calories were burnt. How the heck am I supposed to know how much I burn when squatting or lifting dumbbells. Pretty disappointing to be honest, trying to look for new and improved apps that suits me better. But like I said I do really like the layout and how it looks that’s why it gets a 2 star. They did SOMETHING right!
