Bigfatchump,
Bring the tide back please
Isn't it ironic that as a paying Soul Surfer, you can access information about what the tide *was* during your sesh, but Dawn Patrol have recently removed that information from the screen when you're actually surfing!? Knowing the tide at a given moment and when it will next turn is, in some spots, a huge determinant re: whether one should stay in the water. Am I in the middle of a very long lull, or has the tide risen and swamped out the spot? The tide number would provide important clues. It's often a major safety consideration too--at some spots I surf, rocks and reef become dangerously close to the surface or start to emerge at certain tides. It's very important for me to know not just where we are in the tide cycle, but the actual number. 2 feet. 5 feet. -1.5 feet. Both for the in-session screen and the watch complications, it has become increasingly difficult to understand what the tide is now and when it'll turn. The charts that currently load look cool but are practically far less useful than the previous setup. because the actual numbers have been left out.

Suggestion: I don't care about my total wave time, nor seeing the tide graph complication with unmarked axes showing what it’ll be at 2am. Can you please remove those and give me the tide numbers within the session interface again so I can make important go/no-go decisions in the water and surf more safely? Thank you!
Kfiti,
Awesome app
It was a few years back when I started seeing gps surf watches that tracked your sessions and didn’t think until now that there might just be an app for my Apple Watch. The first time I used it was pretty straight forward. You just start your session and forget about it. It was pretty cool to glance at my wrist after every wave and see how far I went or how fast I was going. Then getting out of the water and looking at the more detailed stats on my phone when I got back to my car was pretty cool, especially the map that shows the waves you caught. It can even display the waves you attempted to catch but didn’t. I’m usually in the water for about an hour on weekdays before I have to get my day started and I found myself trying to reach certain goals like 15 waves before the hour is up. Since the watch app shows it at a quick glance, it makes you want to try harder and challenge yourself. I probably won’t be wearing my watch in the water all that much because I hate getting a watch tan, but every once in a while this would be a great way to get some unique stats about your surfing.
jgc1515,
Highly inaccurate surf tracking
I’ve had this app for a few years now. I even subscribe to the Soul Surfer forecast because the complication looks cool on my watch. But that’s the only good thing about this app - the complication looks cool on the Apple watch. The surf tracking is horrible. It captures very few waves than the actual number of waves caught. Like seriously way off. Sometimes it even records zero waves. I observe this issue at different surf spots. I contacted the developer a couple of years ago and they told me to set the sensitivity to Slow. Did that, still did not record the waves. Then I tried setting the sensitivity to Medium and Fast, neither helped. I deleted the app from my phone and my watch and reinstalled, did not help. I turned off and on the watch before every session to make sure the watch is reset, did not help. Nothing that I tried helped. And I have gone through two Apple watches - still the same issue. I keep waiting for a fix that never came to this day. If you use Surfline Sessions on your watch, you’ll see Surfline Sessions is even way more accurate than this app. Don’t waste your time on this, and especially your money on the Soul Surfer subscription. It’s total garbage. I’ll just get the Rip Curl GPS 2 instead, which I should have done a long time ago. I wish the developer cared enough to fix this, but it’s been years and nothing has changed. I guess they just don’t care enough once they hook you in with the Soul Surfer subscription.
dawn patrol dissapointment,
Worked great 1st session but now is never accurate
Bought the Apple Watch a few months ago strictly for surfing. Surf usually about 5 times a week and have been using the soul surfer subscription upgrade since I bought the Apple Watch. My first session was super accurate catching 15 waves in an hour. Did not Miss any as I tracked the wave count in my head along with watch. Each session since it seems to get worse. I’ve had a few sessions where I caught at least 20 waves and it will track 5 or less and also say a wave was 40 feet when it was well over 350 feet. It’s a bummer because I was super stoked after my first session with this app and am now looking for others that might be better with fixing bugs or just a better gps system. Surfline sessions seems to be way more accurate as I run it at the same time when I run dawn patrol. Hopefully the developers fix all the problems…won’t resubscribe if it doesn’t start working better.

Today I caught 24 waves. It was firing out with fun 4 to 5 foot barrels and just great waves. Dawn patrol app only registered 2 waves out of the 24 ridden and finished. So frustrating! Hopefully Strata comes out with something soon that will take over because Dawn Patrol at this point is just extremely frustrating. I’ve noticed if you pig dog on a wave it never registers and also noticed if there is marine layer nothing hardly registers. Ridiculous
Lucasiophome234,
Terrible tracking and expensive
$30 for an app that doesn’t work. How many times the app doesn’t stop when you forget to be your session…why can’t it use the gps to tell you are in a car vs in the ocean? Never syncs up with the Surfline cameras for sessions and my top best 100 waves are all on streets instead of on the ocean. How an app designed for this can’t look at the info and determine a 1 mile wave on land… is indeed not a wave is beyond me. Misses waves non stop. Would pay $5 just to have the tide and swell aspect of the app, but $30 for less than ideal surf tracking is a rip off. Disappointed and flabbergasted by the fake positive reviews
raydef,
Good start
I’ve been using this app for the past few weeks. It’s recording my waves but the distance travelled is way off. My guess is that it’s calculating distance travelled by adding the distance paddled after my last wave plus the actual distance surfed. Additionally, it’s registering way more waves than I’m actually catching. The main reason I’m using the app is to capture my speeds but due to the miscounting of waves it’s hard to see what my speeds are. The app has ways to go to catch up to the ripcurl gps watch but it’s a good start. One thing I’d like to see on the next iteration is a battery indicator, a LTE signal display, and a missed call/text count or indicator. Might as well take advantage of the Apple Watch 3 hardware. I bought the watch to specifically receive calls and messages while I’m surfing but the app does not take full advantage of these features and constantly unlocking the Digital Crown to check missed calls/texts, or battery life makes using the watch with the app more difficult. Keep going, this app has lots of utility potential.
notseanlynch,
Does not work with Apple Watch ultra.
I really didn’t want to have to leave a review less than 5 stars. There is so much to love about this app! But unfortunately, there are issues with the Apple Watch Ultra that even a year later are still unresolved, rendering the surf tracking nearly useless. More than 50% of sessions tracked with the Ultra are all over the place with GPS recording (recording non-waves, showing waves that sporadically jump from location to location—clearly something is wrong with how GPS data is being used), leading to a complete failure to track a session. I’ve been back and forth with Dawn Patrol support over and over throughout the last year, and I keep getting the same response, “we know about issues with the Apple Watch Ultra, and we’re working on it.” It’s been a long time. I paid the subscription fee for a year (which is almost up at this point, I think). I submitted my feedback. I provided all kinds of data to help the dev team figure things out. Nothing.

I cannot recommend this app for an Apple Watch Ultra user—the experience is finnicky and unreliable, and it’s a huge shame because, when it works, this is a terrific app. It worked flawlessly with my Apple Watch 3 (!), but the Ultra just doesn’t.

I am really bummed. There aren’t really any other options for surf tracking that do what Dawn Patrol does. If there were, I’d use it.

I am still leaving two stars because it is slow close to greatness, when it works. But it does not work.
udell85,
The cost of service isn’t worth it.
For the past few months none of the complications for the watch have worked correctly. Water temperature has been sitting at 72° and somehow that just doesn’t seem correct given it’s December. None of the others complications are updating correctly either. The only thing that works is the tides... If you don’t know, that’s not something you need updated. You can buy a $5 calendar with the tides for the next year if that’s what you need. A surf watch app should have more than a push service that costs money just to clip videos for Surfline. Seems like another money grab by big surf companies not willing to actually do anything new. Buy Surfline premium and then have to buy dawn patrol for some extra functions. It’s a bad deal made by Surfline forced upon people looking to use their service on a watch. I don’t understand why we would need to pay extra monthly or yearly for a service that doesn’t work.
T. Ohta,
Pretty good app
Been using for a while now. Love all of the stats and what I can track, even board by board. Makes surfing fun without taking focus off of the actual surf like a GoPro or a trace might.
Wish that the data could be saved on a cloud and transfer from phone to phone. When I upgraded my last phone I lost all of the data collected up until that point.
Also wish there was a small comments section for each my sessions, so I could write stuff like: fins used, weather and crowd conditions, who I surfed with, etc
Overall a great app for someone looking to track my improvements
google calender user,
Hardware limitation? App limitation?
Overall, I like this app so the developer can keep working on accuracy issue. My only concern (yet the most important factor) is accuracy. After a session in the water, there are always multiple random moving records nearby land locations. I even don’t understand why it happens. Maybe hardware limitation(?) of not capable of keeping constant GPS signal? Also even in the water, I got some records about movement that I even didn’t try (or move a bit). I guess there are some random location hopping in general and the app considers as a ride. Finally location names are incorrect even in CA. Honestly I’m not sure these issues are completely fixable due to hardware (apple watch 3) limitation, but I hope the developer can figure out better ways in terms of software aspect.
