Description

DecideDiet is a new startup on a mission to help tracking recommended sodium and potassium diet compliance in certain diseases like chronic kidney disease, end stage renal disease “dialysis patient”, heart failure, and hypertension. In the US millions live with at least one chronic disease and we know how difficult it is to manage your diet and constantly pay attention to nutrition labels. The old fashion way of providing an education pamphlet to address diet is still largely practiced however the effectiveness of the intervention is yet to be established. DecideDiet is still growing and expanding, stay tuned! We are open to any new ideas or suggestions to improve the application.

We are introducing DecideDiet which has the primary role of educating users with chronic diseases, about diet choices in order to optimize disease control. DecideDiet relying on behavioral modification and smart built in algorithms making consuming your diet easier and fun! No need for manual entry, amount counting, and complex graphs analysis. Forget about reading or memorizing long nutrition labels.

We created a large database of food items with matching bar codes and labeled each item on the basis of food constituents of sodium, potassium, and in the near future phosphorus, using different colors and symbols (for color blind). Your individual unique food basket holds all food you have consumed over time, with a goal being more than 75 % of green, minimal yellow, and NO red labeled diet items in order to comply with the recommended restrictions. The diet compliance is based on the recommended reduced daily consumption of sodium “two grams”, and potassium “two grams”. The recommendations are based on one serving of the consumed item. We labeled green color for appropriate food, yellow - food to avoid, and red – not recommended to consume. The more items you scan the more accurate your basket is.

KEY FEATURES:

• Large database of common foods and products from your favorite brands and restaurants.
• Super easy setup.
• Barcode scanner.
• Instant check of Sodium and Potassium amount in food.
• Visual presentation and diary of consumed food.

Ms Shoes,
Almost amazing
This app is by far one of the best for quickly assessing foods that are acceptable on a renal diet. However, it could be amazing with a few edits. The ability to manually enter the potassium levels of foods that don’t show it in the scan would be great. There are many flagged as green simply because this data is missing and it’s very misleading.
There seems to be no way to add foods manually which is frustrating. There is no way to add foods from specialty markets etc.
I hope the developers continue to evolve this app and increase the functionality while keeping the simplicity and clean design.
learingdaily,
Inconsistent
I notice that some of the same items populate with different recommendations. Example: tuna. One brand came up with yellow/orange and another (exact same label reading) was green. Saw this with beverage as well propel berry is listed as green and red. Really makes it hard to discern which is accurate, especially when learning the new lifestyle.
celiac sense,
Gluten free please
This is a great idea , but needs improvement .
A selection of portion size would be helpful example-1/4 cup or teaspoon etc. I am also celiac so gluten free choices would be nice. My food is a scratch made meal. I do eat out but only at restaurants or bakeries that are dedicated gluten free. I will continue using the app and trying to figure out portions on my own sodium potassium on my own . Almond flour ,brown& white rice flour, tapioca, guar gum, tapioca startch, Corn ,potato, cassava, & chestnut flours.
I do wish you continued success. Finally a very helpful tool to manage basic food intake for a person that eats commercially prepared or packaged foods.
Thank You -Vonda Leiservonma
BrennaBiserka,
I am lost.
I just installed the app and it wants me to check off a color without telling me what it means. The whole label scan thing is weird too, because people with kidney disease should not eat processed food, and most packaged food is processed. I found it impossible to record fresh fruit, salad, stir fry, and other essentials of a healthy diet. I must be missing something.

Stage 3 kidney disease is dangerous, because during this stage, we are 22% more likely to have a heart attack than others, so I thought heart and kidney together was a perfect combo. However, neither the UI nor scanning procedures make much sense to me.

Poor design/interface
Installed on my iPad and got useful (not great results). Intended to install on iPhone to use in store, but forgot password used to install on iPad. Chose rest password option and got the link to rest. Put in and confirmed new password, but got error message ((several times). App doesn’t allow user to see password entered - makes it difficult to see any mismatches. Front end must have been designed by one of those 10-week coding graduates
Chris Khdd,
Happy user
It’s a very user friendly app. I love the fact that it can track down the sodium levels in the food, And the food scan works every time with no issues! Overall the app works perfectly and I’m happy with the experience
Spaceman3000,
Almost great
Agree with another reviewer: this app would be perfect except for too many items that are “green” only because there’s no info reported, and there’s no way to edit items by hand, which would be a way to get around that problem.
Mz Brynda,
Portion control
I love the concept as I was just recently put on a low potassium diet and have to also count carbs with insulin use as a diabetic . It would be perfect if I had the ability to adjust portion to match what I actually consume. This would put some of my foods in that desired green area!
Superbrat324,
Kidney Crushers
Potassium and Sodium are only two of the key ingredients to watch out for on a renal or CKD diet. The other two Phosphorus and Sugar/Carbs should also be closely monitored and therefore should be added to this app to make it both a convenient and outstanding app tool.

Useful to watch salt i eat
Someone actually recommended this app to me because i need to make sure i don’t eat too much salt(sodium). I was surprised how much salt has bread i buy all the time... good app!
