jebishabjdsv,
Instructions
Most of the questions and instructions are in German which I can’t read yet. And when I do actually translate them they don’t help, it just feels like figuring out how to answer a question is a gamble. Overall great app though
TimothyLegg,
Great resource, but duplicate of web site
Deutsche Welle has an enormous effort towards learning German online and they are likely that largest free resource in the English to German direction.

I am critical of this app because it is only a web frontend to their website and precious app space is consumed with functionality duplicated by Safari, but without the features Safari provides, such as cutting-pasting text into a translator website for hints. The app does not let you cut/copy text.

You can go to DW dot COM and click on “Learn German” in the blue banner at the top of the page and you will immediately recognize the app, in fact, it will render identically because Safari uses the same HTML kit as this app (or any other recent iOS app)

I think the app is a great start for a programmers perspective in learning how to write apps for iOS and I am eager to see features like these added in:

* Integrated glossary of favorite words that the user can add entries to populate.
* Storage of offline lessons that Users can complete in absence of internet and synchronize their progress when internet is available.
* Instant translation cheat for individual words via tap and hold.
* Subtitles on videos.
* User definable bookmarks of notable lessons for quick review.

The addition of these will secure a distinction that sets it apart from a Webbrowser that is shortcut to a web page.
chabritto,
Love it!
Best App to learn Deutsch! I still cant believe i found this amazing tool! It has lots of exercises, podcasts, PDFs, audios, videos ( I love Nicos story!) and so many other things, and the best: totally free!!! I’m completely shocked with the amount of resources you have! I gotta say I paid 50 bucks for a year subscription with Busuu, but I just can’t compare the quality and overall experience I’ve had with you, I actually feel annoyed for having paid for a terrible app with the other guys!!

You guys are the best! Thanks for making me fall in love with Deutsch once again!!
Ahm76,
Good content, terrible UX
The quality of the learning content is excellent, but the UX is terrible. I downloaded this app because the mobile website has some egregious usability issues. The biggest issue is that the text answers you write in the blanks in the “Füll die Lücken” exercises are not fully visible; only the tops of the letters can be seen. However, the app looks and works exactly like the website and has no specific advantage over the mobile website. The app is basically like a bookmark/ shortcut to the dysfunctional site, so I just deleted it. The site works quite well when accessed via a desktop or laptop web browser, so I just use that.
MadLordOfMilk,
Sehr gut! (Very good!)
These lessons are a fantastic way to learn and study German. I appreciate being able to watch videos and study what was said in them, along with getting proper explanations for grammar and even some interesting cultural tidbits! The story is also a little cheesy, but I’m hooked on it and want to know what happens next ^_^

I do wish this app supported Split View on my iPad, though. I usually end up just opening up these lessons on their website from Safari so that I can also have a messaging app open on the side while I’m studying German.
ms loveless,
Reading pronounciation
On the iPhone that I use there is a major problem locating the subtitles at the top of the screen for beginners on all videos, I’m not able to see the words during the conversations that the gentleman is having in order to learn the proper way of speaking and reading that go hand in hand. I’m pretty disappointed because I also Use the Dw English version for the news and was interested in learning. It didn’t matter if I rotated the screen or not in order to make the subtitles larger , they were seemingly cut off.

Update: It’s Excellent!

It’s great! Beautiful, high-quality videos with just the right challenge level for the language. Loving it! Thanks, Deutsche Welle!

Downloaded on an iPad Pro, launched once, and it looked great. Really polished, attractive, and I couldn’t wait to have a few minutes to check it out later. So I closed the app. It never opened again. I’ve deleted it and redownloaded it. I’ve restarted the iPad. No change. Every time it opens, the screen is blank with the message: Application Error 500. Totally dead. So I tried it on an iPhone XR. Exactly the same. Application Error 500 every time it launches. Very sad.
Journey2Terrapin,
Good program, but the app needs more work.
I appreciate that unlike other language learning apps, this one uses context rather than translation. You learn more naturally. The downside however, is that it won’t allow me to sign into my account and doesn’t remember previous work without signing in.

Until there are improvements, it makes more sense to use their website.
Mettt28,
One issue
I reaaally love studying with DW.
But i have a big problem with the app.
When i do the Nico lessons in the web version, each finished lesson has a mark which shows it’s done.
When i don’t have my laptop with me i do the lessons on my phone, but it doesn’t show that mark thing which shows the lesson is done.
So if i want to keep track of my finished lessons i still have to redo those lessons on my laptop/web version.
Thank you for all the effort, i really appreciate the content and the fact that it’s free ! It’s really helping me like no other app/website.
machuKachu,
Nothing works
This app doesn’t work for anything. Clicking on start on a lesson just reloads the page but doesn’t actually start the lesson. Also, you can’t register because it freezes at Birthday and tells you the Birthday is invalid. I emailed for help but they’re pretty much useless. I’m thinking they don’t have this set up correctly for apple products as I get the same issue on my iPad
