Description

Final Surge® is used by athletes and teams of many sports around the world, including running, cycling, triathlon, duathlon, and Xterra where performing your best is what it’s all about.

The Daily View shows basic workout data, plus whether the workout status is planned or completed. If completed, the workout is color-coded to indicate whether the workout was completed as planned (Green). If the workout was not completed as planned, color-coding indicates whether the workout was simply missed (Red)… or was under, or over, performed (Yellow).

In the Daily View, tap on the Quick Complete button to easily enter workout data, including just one tap on the Complete As Planned button to automatically enter Distance, Duration, and Pace for the workout, plus you can easily add How You Felt, your Perceived Effort, and Workout Notes. These features make manual entry a snap, but of course, the App automatically syncs workout data from your sports watch and other devices through platforms like Garmin Connect®, Strava®, Polar Flow®, and others.

The Quick View button puts the most important workout information only one tap away, which is especially nice when you have several workouts or are a coach working with several athletes.

The Quick Comment button opens a messaging-style screen where comments between coach and athlete for each workout are readily available.

Of course, if you are using a sports watch or similar tracking device and want to dive into every workout detail, just tap on the top of the workout to show the Details View. The Details View has the following 5 tabs: Planned Versus Completed, Laps (Splits), Workout Map, Workout Graphs, and Comments between Coach and Athlete for each workout.

The Final Surge App also has a Weekly View that doesn’t require you to awkwardly put your phone into a landscape position. An entire week of workouts is shown, and just like with the Daily View, workouts are color-coded to instantly show you the status of each workout. Tapping on any of the workouts in the Weekly View opens the same 5 Workout Details screens available for the Daily View.

Coaches can easily access a list of their athletes and teams with one tap, and review and manage their Athletes’ Workout Calendars and Teams’ Workout Calendars with the same detail as the Athlete’s View. The App includes Push Notifications to notify of workout completions, workout comments and other real-time occurrences in training.

Team and Group calendars, internal message boards and individual messaging make this App ideal for high school, collegiate, professional and club teams.

The App syncs with Garmin Connect, Strava, and other platforms to access all major sports watches and similar tracking devices and provides highly accurate geopositioning information with corrected elevation.

The App supports the new running power tracking and advanced cycling power metrics, such as weighted power, max power, average power, and intensity.

The App also tracks your Vitals, including your weight, sleep, blood pressure, etc. to monitor your overall heath and progress due to improved fitness. It also includes a Workout History capability to review summary presentations of your past workouts.

Easily load Training Plans for virtually any kind of race from the world’s best coaches and work with a coach to receive individualized training to reach your most aspirational goals. The App includes a Coach's Mailbox for direct private communication and private Social Walls that provide a complete social media experience to drive athlete motivation and engagement.

You can track Workout Gear (bikes and shoes) and save your favorite Workout Routes. Your own customized Workout Zones (HR and power) can be used to make sure you are always performing an optimized workout. The App can access leading Workout Calculators to always make sure you are working out at the right pace.

The New Final Surge App Version 3 gives a whole new meaning to... Train with a purpose™.

The Pain and Injury Report
This newest release of the Final Surge iOS App introduces the "Pain and Injury Report" an elegantly simple way for athletes and coaches to comprehensively track any pain and injuries that occur during a workout. For years now, Final Surge has been focusing on how to make coaches and athletes more successful. Our research showed that the single biggest reason coaches were losing athletes, and the income associated with them, was a workout-related injury. The single biggest reason athletes were failing to meet their fitness and performance goals was again, workout-related injury.
Now, when an athlete enters their workout in the App they simply tap on a point on a body graphic indicating the location of the pain, which opens the pain reporting screen with the following three sliding controls:
• Pain Level – A sliding scale of 1 to 10 of pain intensity.

• Pain Duration – A sliding scale of when the pain started and ended during the workout.

• Pain Trend – A sliding scale of whether the pain was increasing, constant, or decreasing.

These entries are consolidated and represented in one information-packed graphic we call a Pain Reporting Point. Later when reviewing the workout, the coach gets a complete picture with just a quick glance at the Pain Reporting Point's information and its location on the body. Tracking an athlete's history of pain and injury can give early warnings of overtraining, inadequate recovery, bad form, undesirable compensations, specific muscle weaknesses, and more.

Running Dynamics and Running Power

FinalSurge.com has included Garmin Running Dynamics and Stryd Running Power metrics for a while, but with this update, these valuable new metrics are reported and explained in the App.

Pace Zones

Final Surge has long given athletes and coaches a simple way to convey workout intensity through Heart Rate Zones and Power Zones. Now we've added a third method, though Pace Zones. This is especially popular with runners who understand how various desired workout intensities correlate with running paces measured by distance over time.

Improved Notifications

This release has added several optional new push and email Notifications for the Pain and Injury Report and for Social Wall Posts, Likes, and Comments. The Notifications list now has separate tabs for All, Workouts, Mailbox, and Social Wall Notifications.

Other Improvements

Improved performance and squashed a few obscure bugs.

CEKinVA,
Love but Wish I could easily see my upcoming events and races
Just started using the App and I love it! Compared it to others, and I love the simplicity and calendar views views. I do both road races and triathlons, so keeping up with my training is challenging. This app just made it easier.

The one thing I wished it had was a way to easily enter and see races and events. I don’t really need a countdown calendar or anything (I usually do a few races in a season), but I’d love to see the list quickly.

Also, would love a connection to Zwift so I can connect my bike trainer sessions. :)

Thank you!!!
NiaKini,
Great app once working, terrible tech support
Using iPhone X and Apple watch series 3, both with current OS and iOS. Have to use Health Fit as intermediary to integrate Apple workouts with FinalSurge. Does not sync with NRC+, which I knew but still, come on folks, let's get better at integrating. Online tutorials are useless and few, no online basic instruction manual. Tech support responded about 1/3 of the times I contacted them and with repeatedly sending non-helpful screen shots or tutorials--could not or would not respond to my specific questions. After a lot of trial and error, finally got app to integrate my workouts. The data available, once integration is finally working, are exquisite. But instruction manual non-existent and tech support is among the worst I've ever encounteted. Integrating workouts into Outlook calendar uses old-fashioned technology but does work once you realize it's an old-fashioned technology that you need to use. So 5 stars for the workout data once integration is working but 0 stars support, thus 2 stars overall for use with Apple watch, iPhone and Apple workouts.
Arnold Diaz,
Great data, decent concept, bad interface
One gets the sense the developer got this out way too early, before it could be truly tested. The interface online is okay, but pales in comparison to the crispness and ease of Strava's. There is room for a lot of data, but one can’t really access that data in one easy-to-find place. Lots of clicking around to get all you want. Again, Strava does this better, though FS collects more data...it just doesn’t let the user use it. As for the app, the tiny gray font is just absolutely unreadable in a regular sized iPad. Can’t imagine a mini, or iPhone. Absolutely useless. How hard could it have been to allow users to increase font size, and make the font BLACK in the first place. Don’t think I can use this at all, at least until some serious upgrades are made.
splashofcolor,
Unusable on iPad Pro
The iOS version of Final Surge is a huge let down for iPad users. It is clearly only made for use on the iPhone, since there are huge margins around the screen on the iPad and the app only works with the device in portrait orientation. Since I usually keep my tablet attached to the Apple Smart Keyboard when I’m not drawing, I need the app to work in landscape mode. Why this app cannot do something as simple as adjust to the orientation of the screen is beyond me. And those huge margins are just ridiculous. What a shame that Final Surge ignored iPad users when releasing its iOS app. I was hoping to use this on my iPad so that I could see my strength training and conditioning workouts on my 12.9” iPad Pro screen while training. Looks like I’m stuck using the web version when I’m on my iPad. What a disappointment.
Little10Foil,
Apple Health Kit Integration Please!
I’ve been using FS as my coach uses this to communicate and plan workouts with me. It’s a pretty good app allowing me to manage may training calendar, and I CNA load my workouts from Apple Watch via using a 3rd party app called HealthFit. However not everything translates 100% for example a rowing workout just populates as generic cross training. What would it take to get 2 more stars? Integration with Apple Health Kit. So much of my data that FS needs is in Apple HealthKit (not just workouts but weight, body measurements, nutrition, etc.). Please let us know what the plans are to get FS integrated with Apple HealthKit.
Scotia smitty,
The UI is terrible
I haven’t seen them try to improve this app since I started using it a year ago.

For example the use of color in my workouts is so confusing! I will have spent over 30 seconds on a strength class and it marks it blue. Also it repeats the activity request in my workouts and your activity- which just doesn’t make sense. Why? Beyond the log of seeing what a trainer wants you to do I don’t see the value in this app.

My trainer could provide me with a doc instead that lists out workouts that would be easier to use. Please please improve this app.
ldobro,
Great app!
I’ve just starting using this app. It it works great as a communication platform for my coach and I. I have an AppleWatch and use HealthFit as a go between since Final Surge doesn’t import directly from Fitness+. It would be really nice if Final Surge would import the Splits from HealthFit and not just the Segments.
BobSmart567,
Great workout planner
This is a great training planner that has a robust feature set, and it’s working well for me so far. They are also very responsive to feedback and are actively implementing new features. The fact that this is free for athletes is fantastic.
Kitkat0120,
Doesn’t work well with Apple Watch
The app is a huge pain to get workouts from Apple Watch to sync through. I had to download a second app to push the data through and even then it doesn’t take in mile splits unless you are creating new intervals/segments on the watch. Overall quite frustrating that the integration is so bad but Apple Watch works fine with Strava and Training Peaks
cam12444,
Update doesn’t work
I’m getting a message that says “this version is not supported anymore” And then it gives you a choice to terminate or update in appstore. But when I try to update it just kicks me back to the program that says “this version is not supported anymore”. What a fail after all this time using it. For it to break down now after my coach and I have counted on using it is such a fail.
