Description

Have you (or maybe one of your friends) ever wanted to learn to transcribe or play music by ear?

It is so important for a musician to know what you are hearing. A good musical ear helps when you are composing, improvising, transcribing melodies, or playing with others.

Most likely you have already tried different programs to learn to recognize intervals or even to acquire perfect pitch. However, although such programs develop your ear, but can you actually play any melody you hear as soon as you listen to it?

Imagine you could understand music... It is like when somebody is talking to you, you not only hear pleasant sounds, but you recognize words and their meaning.

One day I came across Alain Benbassat's program called "Functional Ear Trainer" and have been using it ever since. It is based on Alain's method to learn to recognize tones.

The main difference between the Functional Ear Trainer and other methods is that it teaches you to distinguish between tones in the context of a particular musical key. You begin to recognize the role (or function) of each tone in this key, which is incredibly similar to its role in other keys of the same scale.

And it is *guaranteed* anyone can gradually develop this skill. It does not matter:
- who you are - an absolute beginner in music or a virtuoso professional musician;
- how old you are - a 3 yo kid or a 90+ adult;
- what musical instrument you play (you don't even have to play one).

The only requirement is to practice for 10 minutes a day.

I was so excited about this ear trainer that I have developed a mobile app based on the Alain Benbassat method. I hope you will find it useful.

A new icon :)
Fixed a bug with spuriously shown clipboard access notifications on the new iOS 14.
In the Settings from the main menu, there are several hints to find other available settings.
When you are playing a level, press the "gear" at the top right corner, then "Volume". You can now set the cadence and notes volumes separately.
It is possible to clear stats for any level.

CharmieLady,
This is a great app 😊
I have been using this app consistently over past several days and I have been improving my note recognition far better than I ever thought I could. I didn’t believe it would work this well and in such a short time. I still have quite a ways to go but I’m confident I will get there. The app is fun to use. Easy to navigate. I am learning quite a bit about music. I’m 54 years old and decided to take up playing the keyboard about 4 years ago. I have been teaching myself using mostly apps and online learning. I have no previous music education before that at all but always wanted to play an instrument. Back in my younger years I was told I didn’t have an ear for it and was refused as a student. Not something likely to happen today. But thanks to apps like this one, I’m finally getting back what was taken from me even though I’ll never be as good as if I had learned it from a young age but I never thought it was possible until recently. Thanks for such a great app. Highly recommended for everyone who wants to learn this. It’s amazingly fun and informative as well.
BigBlocka,
Simple and effective
This app is exactly what I was looking for. I want to learn to play my bass guitar by ear. This app lets me practice finding the right note on my bass without worrying about what it’s called. It has the option to name the notes by letters, numbers, or the do-re- me system. There is a steady level build up from half a scale, to the other half, to a full octave, to multiple octaves, to different scales, etc. I like it very much and have noticed an improvement in just a week of using it. The only thing that could make this app better is if It could recognize the note I play instead of tapping the screen. Right now I listen to the note, then play it on my bass, then tap the corresponding number on the app. Nevertheless, I’m just being picky. Overall this is an excellent app. I highly recommend.

Quality Ear Trainer
I’ve only been using this app for a couple days but I already love it. For one, I’m constantly searching for ways to improve my musicality away from the piano. Some days, I’m just too tired to practice (or practice well). This is a great way to develop your ear.

I’m curious to know if more advanced levels become unlocked as you complete the material (right now it’s only showing me basic levels). If not, I’ll make use of the custom level tool to create additional challenges once I’ve finished the included ones. I also have not yet come across descending intervals, so I can’t tell if those are available (which would be extremely helpful).

I would definitely recommend this app to any musician working to improve their ear-training. Developers, keep up the excellent work!

A better approach to ear training
As a music student I used interval and chord ear training software for my theory classes. I learned fixed solfege and spent countless hours listening to a shuffle of interval training mp3s. It’s possible that it’s just the cumulative effect of all that work paying off now, but with this app I’m seeing much faster results than with interval training. I think the functional approach is brilliant and wish I had started from this perspective years ago. I also see the possibility of this helping with absolute pitch- I correctly identified the note of my microwave by asking what it felt like. After only a few days working with this app, I was able to instantly say it felt like the third of E. I realized that because I play guitar and have played a lot of music in its most resonant major key, this is a strong tonal reference for me.
Onkyo509user,
Great way to train ear
I was trained to read notation but not play by ear which limited which musical groups I could participate in. While I could play any scale from notation and academically knew the intervals, I did not have a “sense” of how each note “felt” relative to the others. I tried other ear training apps which taught interval training out of context and didn’t make a lot of progress. Once I started using this app, my ability to pick the right note of the scale after establishing the “Do” has taken a step-change in growth. I love that there are multiple levels to build skills over time. I am now able to play basic songs by ear without thinking too much, just playing what feels right. Lots more to learn, but thankful for this great app!
Unyousual,
Outstanding
I feel this is a simple, very well done app that does what it says. It’s found a specific category of (often undertrained) skills and elegantly guides and instructs you on how to train them and why they’re important.

What’s more, I think this certain category of skills is very often overlooked.

It’s designed very well and logically with no frills and with some interesting metrics and data about how you’re doing.

Finally it does not claim to be the one thing you’re missing and holding you back from becoming an amazing singer. That’s because it is not. As the creator says, it’s a tool that can help you develop and refine your ability to hear pitches relative to others and stay in key. They do not try extremely hard to sell it because they know what it is and that it is great! After going through some of the instructions, although I had never heard of or have met Korchan, I’d bet he (or whoever made and placed the instructions/lessons) is very smart and self aware. Again not because of a use of big words or vocabulary but just because of the usefulness, digestibility, and timeliness of the instructions.

This app does everything well and, to me, nothing poorly.

And it’s free! No ads.
PacWoman,
This is what I’ve been needing!
My pitch is good, but when put in situations where I’d need to improvise I always found it difficult. I’d watch amazing musicians that were so good to the point they knew exactly where the music was heading even without sometimes knowing the song. Their instincts and understanding song structure of a tune was something I always wanted to be able to do. I always wanted the ability to be put in a situation where I could just jump in even without knowing the song. I was always jealous of my friends that could do that. Well, I can’t afford a Berkeley education but I can designate 5 minutes a day to training my ear and so far.... I’m already seeing a difference in my ability to recognize pitches within any key given. High five!
jordro5000,
Awesome ear training method
I’ve struggled with interval training for a long time. Struggling with ear training made me believe I didn’t have a good natural ear. I thought it was strange though because I always was the top in my class in music theory and would be asked to be chair 1 in my guitar quartet. I was a fine music student and one of my teachers favorite but I could never grasp on to intervals and I tried and tried but this method is so intuitive it makes you feel like you knew the answers all along you just had to uncover it yourself. In just a month of using this I see more progress than years of interval training. This will be the way I teach ear training to my students from now on
crl0109,
Very good
This is a challenging app for me. However, my wife is great. She has years as a piano voice teacher, so she will advance quicker.
No problem. For me, my third nights lesson and I am hitting 70 to 90 points consistently. I was bummed my fist night. I hit 100% only once on night 2. Then hit 87 %. So I shall not advance till I stay above 90 consistently. So, I think I shall get way better as I go along, but it takes practice, and it’s rewarding to see your personal improvement. It helps my harmonica and guitar playing too I gave four stars instead of five because for the first time user it’s confusing to understand at first what tones you look for, so perhaps an example to show the first time user will keep more interested beginners I enjoy this app
Quantum ,
Great! Needs support for modes and other cadences
This is a great app. Very useful, and far more useful I believe than interval training.
What would be even more useful however is the ability to include modes other than the major and minor. For instance, even though you can restrict the notes in the major scale to only play or give us notes in say, mixolydian, when it finishes the note progression it always finishes it in a major sense. So you never develop an ear for how another mode sounds within the key as it completes. They have this for minor for instance, but not for anything else other than major and minor.

Please add support for other modes, as well as other modal cadences.
