6.41.0
2017-10-04
The GTN 650/750 iOS Trainer has been updated to GTN 650/750 software version 6.41. This new software update includes the following new capabilities:

Visual approach guidance

Visual approach guidance is now available within the GTN 650/750, which provides advisory vertical guidance in visual flight conditions based on a published glide path angle or a three-degree glideslope from the threshold of the runway, while considering terrain and obstacle clearance. When selecting a visual approach, pilots can choose the runway of intended landing and select vectors for the final approach intercept to assist them in flying a stabilized approach. When a flight plan is loaded, the GTN will also provide a shortcut to optionally load and activate a visual approach when the aircraft is within 5 miles of the destination airport if an approach is not already selected. By utilizing visual approach guidance within the GTN, pilots are provided a more stable descent and precise flight path throughout the approach and landing phases of flight while operating in visual conditions.

LNAV+V approaches without WAAS/SBAS

Pilots operating into airports throughout the world that are not served by WAAS/SBAS can now receive advisory vertical guidance (LNAV+V) while flying LNAV approaches with the GTN 650/750. By taking advantage of the advisory glideslope offered by the GTN, pilots can more easily fly a stabilized descent while flying LNAV approaches.

On-screen flight controls

On-screen flight controls are now available for the GTN 650/750 iOS Trainer, providing easy access to the most commonly used flight controls of airspeed, altitude and heading. These controls supplement the existing demo menu options and offer an intuitive way to “fly” the simulated aircraft. Pilots can change between manual and flight plan track modes on the fly, simulating either manual flight or an autopilot-like experience, respectively.

New configuration options

The GTN 650/750 iOS Trainer now allows pilots to select between fixed-wing and rotorcraft airframe simulations. Additionally, the GTN 650/750 iOS Trainer’s terrain configuration has been upgraded to enable TAWS-B and HTAWS demonstrations based on which airframe the pilot has selected.

You should like it!,
Excellent for RNAV I can’t fly ILS
I can make the simulator fly RNAV all day but when I try to fly an ILS even after I tunes the correct frequency in the navigation side and have it fly on auto pilot it will not descend. VLOC is being displayed and I’ve loaded and activated the approach It will not to descend on auto pilot it will if you change the altitude while flying in manual mode but this doesn’t make any sense because you should be able to fly in auto pilot and change your altitude and have it follow. Overall a great app I just wish it would fly the ILS and hopefully I’m not doing something wrong.
Snerbal,
Excellent except for two BIG problems
Thank you Garmin for providing this ‘free’ trainer (although it’s not really free since we pay through the nose for your hardware and databases (even though those are provided by the government)). This is excellent for training, although using the simulator is almost useless if you want to practice on actual routes you might use or local area stuff, because you can’t change where the simulator starts. It always starts somewhere in Kansas, I assume where the Garmin offices are. The only way to get the simulator anywhere is to ‘fly’ it there, in real time (at up to 999 knots, and that still takes a while). That leads to the second problem: if you leave the simulator to do something else, it doesn’t keep running in the background. It closes down and starts up again when you come back. That wouldn’t be so bad if you could actually start it on the map where you want. How hard is that to add a start-up field that says “Starting Location”? I’ll answer - it’s NOT.
It also seems to have some other obscure problems, like “Graphically Edit Flight Plan Mode” which does not seem to operate correctly according to the manual. I have to get back in my airplane and see how the real thing works though to be sure now. But that’s a problem - if you are providing a product that is supposed to TRAIN users on the real thing, you had better make sure you got everything right to avoid negative training!
smash68,
Please add auto pilot
This simulator is great for learning how to navigate the various screens and button pushing operations of the navigator, but in real life the more difficult problem is learning how the navigator interacts with an auto pilot. It would be great if you would add an auto pilot controller head (GFC 500, 600, 700) along with an annunciation display showing AP, HDG and ALT status. The iPad screen has enough room to fit both a GTN650 and a controller head / status display. Then we could practice approaches, VNAV, SIDs, STARs and enroute procedures with autopilot automation. Way cheaper than going up in the airplane and burning gas. And probably simpler for Garmin than trying to integrate with X-Plane or MSF Flight Simulator.

And while you are at it, in addition to the current IAS, HDG and ALT fields at the top of the iPad view, please add fields that show the actual IAS and ALT of the simulated airplane. As it stands, we can command a change in airspeed, heading and altitude using the provided controls, but it takes time for the simulated airplane to achieve the newly commanded inputs. It would be really nice to know what the simulated airplane is actually doing in real time instead of having to guess.
Matt-C182,
X-Plane Integration NEEDED!
As an emulation of a GTN navigator, this app is great. But as an actual training tool, it is extremely limited because the flight simulation is incomplete to the point of being basically useless. What this app needs is an interface to a flight simulator like X-Plane so that you can fly a simulated aircraft and learn how to use the GTN at the same time.

What’s especially frustrating about this missing feature is that Garmin definitely knows how to do this. The Garmin Pilot app has this exact mode and it is an indispensable tool for learning how the app responds when you’re in a real cockpit. It simply and easily interfaces over wifi with X-Plane and receives position updates from X-Plane. The same implementation here would improve this app dramatically.

If this is an issue about pricing, I’m sure most pilots would be glad to pay for an in-app purchase to add this capability. I certainly would be.

Come on, Garmin. You’ve got the know-how and you clearly see the benefit of using flight simulators with your apps to improve the training experience. I’m sure you’ll even sell a few more GTN units if pilots have the ability to try them out on their home simulators first.
The Tonks,
What it does, it does well.
I recently started flying an airplane equipped with a GTN 750. Having this trainer saved me a lot of time, money and embarrassment.

One thing I’d like to see is a second radio option displayed on the audio panel. Being able to train new users how to switch from one radio to another without needing to turn on the plane’s master switch.
Rotorhead2,
Good for what it's intended for.
I like this app, as it allows me to explore all the different buttons and sub menus of my GTN 650, from the comfort of my easy chair. I am particularly glad this new version lets you choose a GTN 650 interface, whereas the old version you were stuck with just the 750.
Db2wings,
New update is nice
I'm hoping Garmin is working on an update that will allow two iPads connected somehow over or Bluetooth...so we can run GTN trainer on one iPad and TXi trainer on the other and have them work together like in the airplane. Now that would be awesome training!
HeliGuy2000,
A great learning aid
It can be tough to learn a new radio and fly the helicopter at the same time. This was a huge help. I was able to learn and practice relevant features so I didn’t have to think about them in the air.
shawnazimi,
Great Trainer
I use it all the time for recurrence training, you ca even practice the approach procedure on this app to get familiar with the local areas that you will fly the next day. Highly recommending it fo pilots that will fly aircraft equipped with gtn750.
HarmonyDanO,
Junk
I would give it - stars if I could. The problems? (1) the airplane doesn’t start flying the route when you add airspeed and altitude; (2) the airplane’s starting location can’t be moved; and (3) THE MANUAL DOESNT EXPLAIN HOW TO DO THESE THINGS, IF THEY ARE EVEN POSSIBLE! And if they are not possible, what good is the program? Utter junk. Don’t waste your time. It’s pretty much right on the regression line for Garmin.
