Best language app that made me progress the fastest
I have used glossika for 1 week during the free trial, I basically did nothing but listened to it when I walk/drive/cook, but have already magically preogressed so much, being able to understand many articles and podcasts. Definitely recommend it to all language learners.
Things I hope Glossika can improve:
1. Subscription fee is too expensive, I hope there would be a cheaper option for those who only want to learn one language
2. The app always stop playing when in backend operation
3. I hope there’s a button to see the previous rep in case I missed it or want to listen to it again
4. The level test is too simple so that the test result is higher than my real level

A few questions
Hi,
I’m new to Glossika after 2 years learning Mandarin, Hsk4+ very happy with reading/writing but struggling with listening and talking. I started Glossika from 0 (no placement test) to be sure not to miss anything and have a more consistent practice this year. I have trouble to force myself doing shadowing / chorusing on free materials everyday. My famous lack of volonté… 😅

I noticed a few bugs in lsessions on iPad and iPhone but I will probably get in touch directly with tech support when I can reproduce them. No deal breaker.

But a quick question : is the badge on the app not supposed to display the number of reviews / new items to do today? It doesn’t seem to work here, and I was hoping that it could give me a kick in the b… every morning the same way Anki shows me remaining reviews. I did activate them in iOS settings but didn’t change anything.

Also, i never really used the website version but it seemed from tutorial videos that you recommend doing reviews BEFORE learning new materials (obviously not on the first days). Yet new materials show first in the app, you have to toggle to review mode to see what’s there. And is there a way to change that by defaut?

Anyway, I wish you can soon release some videos dedicated to the new Glossika especially the iOS/iPad OS apps, it seems a few things have changed over the last couple years.

Thanks !
csbguitar,
Buggy app doesn’t work
TL;DR: this app is buggy and also doesn’t work when the screen is locked. Glossika is such a cool concept but they really need to just hire a good developer to make their app match the quality of their whole program.

For such an expensive subscription, this app functions quite poorly. It simply stops playing audio when the screen is locked, displaying an error message about losing the network connection (even though it was just working fine with the same connection while the screen was still unlocked).

There are some other features that it really should have as well such as a back button for when you want to return to the previous sentence, and better options for toggling off parts of the display text so that it is not so crowded. For example, the “Pronunciation” transcription includes the original target language text, even though it’s already displayed above, and it’s not possible to remove this duplicate text without removing the romanized pronunciation as well. Offline capability would also be very useful.
DigitalNomadSF,
Love the concept. Pricing far too high and is not congruent with delivered quality.
Lots of bugs. Some sentences repeat multiple times in a row. The app can be laggy and glitchy. Some of the IPA pronunciation guides are just copies of the written sentence. Some of the recordings seem way off. Some recordings seem cut off. Why are all of the voices male? Would be nice to mix in female voices. The pricing, in my view, is way too high for the quality delivered. However, this is a one of a kind product and might justify premium pricing IF the quality of the app were higher. Pimsleur is a fully fleshed out product with decades of refinement. It has many more features and is produced in a studio with excellent sound quality and pronunciation feedback. I’m rooting for Glossika. I hope they can improve. Please consider reducing your price points. The pricing is far too premium for what this app does. I love the idea of Glossika and would love to continue using it but the quality and pricing just don’t align for me right now.
jgrk28,
Enjoying, would like 1 feature
Glossika Team,
I have been enjoying using glossika for some time now and the offline mode that you just added is a great addition.
I also like the ability to switch the base language so I can learn a new language with a stronger language that I am also learning however there is one small thing there that I would love to see updated. Currently I want to use English as my base language when learning new sentences (so that I can be sure I get all the subtleties) and then use a second language as the base language when I am reviewing. But right now I keep having to switch the settings back and forth. Could you make the base language setting specific to the study mode so that I can set a different one for new sentences and a different one for review?
tk441,
Unique and amazingly useful system
5+ year Glossika user here. It’s an amazing system, sort of like a fluency gym for your brain… Complete with all the tedious repetition and suffering that comes with a trip to an actual gym ;-). But it really does work if you stick with it. The sentences earworm their way in to your brain and become much easier after a week. On that note, I do wish they would add some diversity to the English audio.

Although there are some glitches with the app, the service as a whole gets five stars just for being so unique and effective. Their system works really well using Listening Mode for the mimicking / chorusing technique of fluency building. This really needs to be explained better in the app. I’d be confused had I not read their PDF.

The content in Glossika is also one of its strengths. Their phrases are very natural and realistic, and multiple regional variations are often available (Spain and Mexican Spanish, Northern & Southern Vietnamese, etc). It never sounds canned or too textbooky.

But yeah… some usability issues. there’s gotta be a way to hide the target language in listening mode or only show the more complex words.
The Chums of Chance,
Fantastic language
I subscribed to Glossika last year, but wasn’t using it much. Then they released the app, and now I use it constantly. Very well designed and versatile. Worth it to play with the settings a bit until you get a combination that you like. I love that every new set of sentences is a bit of a challenge, and that it makes you practice each set for long enough that you really get it. My pronunciation and comprehension have both improved significantly in a very short time. Highly recommend.
TenaciousD19800,
Finally they have an app!
I’ve been a long time user of their service, and it is the main reason why I can understand spoken Japanese, and my intonation is decent. This approach to language acquisition helps to internalize the language more than any method other than mass immersion. You can accelerate your progress with a little bit of grammar study. The web-based app was good, but I’m so excited to have an iOS app! I’ve been waiting a long time for this! Thank you so much to the Glossika team. You guys are great!
Whitehawk108,
Great App!!
I’ve been using Glossika since the time you had to
Purchase books and download mp3 files to do your own training, so definitely a long time fan 😁.

I love the Glossika method, and it’s one of the few apps that I always recommend when people ask me what are good ways to learn a language.

I love the app because I used to have to play Glossika through a browser on my phone, and there were a plethora of issues that went along with that.

I agree with one of the other reviewers that an explanation of the method would be very helpful for new users. Also, a guide to the IPA pronunciation system would be fantastic. Lastly, bring back the Russian Cyrillic learning games!! I absolutely loved those and they were so effective at teaching the Russian Alphabet.
jspellmire,
Great concept; expensive and could use some improvement
It’s a very useful app, but it’s quite expensive and without some improvements I would not renew at the current price.

1) often freezes during playback

2) test results in multiple languages placed me at a more advanced level than seemed correct

3) I often use the app while working outside, and it would be extremely useful to be able to perform basic controls (pause/resume) from the iPhone Lock Screen, as with many other audio apps. Even better would be integration with Bluetooth headphones so playback could pause and resume with push of a button. I often wear gloves and it is time consuming to have to remove them and unlock my phone every time the app freezes or I need to pause it.
