----------

Speechling is a 501(c)3 educational nonprofit based in California, USA.

We are committed to providing the highest quality free language education to anyone in the world.

----------

How it works:

1. Listen to a native speaker, of either gender, say a sentence.
2. Record yourself on the microphone.
3. Get feedback within 24 hours.
4. (Soon) Have others think you're native.

----------

The Speechling Method

With a foundation in our mission, the Speechling Method uses a combination of technology and human coaching to help our students learn new languages.

We place an emphasis on speaking, because of the lack of free and affordable tools for helping people speak. By breaking down spoken language barriers, we hope to increase access to education, employment opportunities, and a better quality of life.

----------

Immersion

As a technology platform, we’re available as an educational tool 24/7. Speechling uses spaced repetition and sophisticated algorithms to let our users practice from thousands of sentences with real human voices from both genders.

----------

Personal Feedback

As a personal tutoring service, our certified pronunciation coaches give feedback on your speaking within 24 hours. Advanced students can answer a question or describe an image, and we will give feedback similar to what a private tutor will provide.

c paw le,
Get this language app, don't bother with the others
Many options to study, so what you should do upon opening the app is less straight forward than with other popular language apps. Dictation mode really helps for developing a native ear! There's modes that really get you to listen and talk, which is what other apps are missing. The sentences are so much more practical than in other language apps (duolingo, memrise, glossika, I've tried them all). The voice actors are good, I wish they consistently spoke faster (at native speeds) and less...robotically (my native friends make fun of the mechanical enunciation 😂). You can get really far in free mode. Feels like you have to be pretty advanced before paying for a coach is helpful. Sure there's bugs and the app is less "beautiful" or gamified than the competition, but it actually works and isn't useless like the others, so what do you care about in your language learning?
Michael Tiller,
App I’ve been looking for
There are lots of apps that teach you tourist phrases or do flash cards one word at a time. But this app has several important (to me, at least) features you don’t often see.

First, they have many language levels. Second, they have lots of spoken word content and several ways to use it. For example, I started by listening to phrases in French and then English. It has a nice UI for repeating phrases in both languages. But it also has phrase flash cards where you can let it know whether you understood and it uses this to determine rotation of flash cards. Third, pretty much everywhere in the app it lets you record your own voice and here it played back side by side with the original. Which leads to the final feature, a built-in coach. Now, I haven’t really used this feature. But it lets send the audio you record to the coach and get feedback which I thought was pretty cool.

The irony is that I like this app more than the others I’ve tried and so much functionality here is free. I’m impressed with how many different phrases they have at each level. If I end up using this regularly, I plan to get some paid content just to support the app (i.e., not because I need to “unlock” anything).

Overall, very impressed. I certainly hope they can keep the content coming.
Sean AH,
Five stars, despite...
After a couple days using this app it becomes obvious that it is bar none the most effective way to learn a language. Dont waste your time with other apps that only give you the feeling of progress, or dont let you check your own pronunciation. However, the UI is really bad. I actually uninstalled the app when I first got it because the user interface was so unintuitive. Happy to provide more details, but there are always too many buttons up, and if you press the wrong one it messes everything up. Despite that I will put up with it because the core mechanics are the best (free) of any app I know. Unfortunate for the devs I guess, the free features are useful enough I feel zero need for the paid features.

Useful Idea! Awesome!
This app is a great and very helpful idea, however, there seems to be “bugs.” Referring to Listening Comprehension, No matter what device I use, there seems to be 2 “tracks” playing at the same time; there is overlap when listening making it difficult to use the app. This makes using the app very challenging. Also, when trying to pause, the app keeps playing; to stop or pause, one has to shut the app down (swipe up).

Can this be fixed anytime soon?

Update: Thank you for addressing this issue offline expeditiously. After multiple times of deleting and re-installing, The has been working well. The App is extremely helpful for learning a language at the various stages, Thank You 😊

Excellent app for feedback, speaking practice
This is a remarkable app. So many language apps focus on the receptive/passive side of language learning, as opposed to the productive/active side. Speechling gives you a chance to speak the target language and receive feedback in very timely fashion. It’s the perfect app for busy people who want to keep up their language learning but don’t have hours at a time to do lessons with a tutor. Their customer service is responsive and friendly, and they’re planning to add more languages to the ones they have already (Spanish, French, German, Russian, Chinese, English). I’m recommending it to everyone I know who’s studying a language.

Great App
As an intermediate in reading and listening but abysmal at speaking my TL this app is perfect.

The only thing I wish it had was automatic playback of the native speaker after recording yourself in study mode. On the desktop website, when you record yourself in study mode it will replay your recording and then also the native recording. This is very useful to hear differences in pronunciation.

However, in the app, for whatever reason, you have to manually press play on the native recording to play it back. I wish it were automatic like the website.
ErikEnFrance,
Wonderful
I love this program. I mostly use the web version, but occasionally I use the iPhone app when I’m away from my computer. There are some user interface glitches and at first the UI can be a bit confusing. All that is minor. I’ve learned SO much French from this… especially pronunciation. This is the single best app I’ve found for improving my pronunciation. I’ve also improved my understanding of French syntax and spelling dramatically.
Língua Learner,
Great App/ Great future
Just started using Speechling this week, overall exactly what I was looking for to better my pronunciation. The only negative part is the UI is a little confusing at first, but I can say once you know what you are doing with app. You can definitely get some work in. Trust me download this app , focus on getting the functions down and you will be extremely happy with this app. Thank you Speechling team for working on this app.

Wonderful
This app is very helpful for learning how to speak your target language! It has worked for me and I am much more confident than I was before when speaking French!! I hope this app gets the recognition it deserves!!!!

This app will grow and become as big as Duolingo and lingvist. It offeres what they cannot provide I love practicing my sentences, and there’s so much activities than other apps or websites!
(Glossika tries to copy this app but there you have to pay to record, and glossika is only a website no app)

Spanish speaker needs practice
I was raised in a bilingual household but my first language is English. I want to practice my Spanish and I try this out. At first I thought this was going to be too easy for me but actually it’s teaching me and correcting me. So far I’m really enjoying it and the number of ways you can practice the language for free.

However, I would love to learn American Sign Language and if that was incorporated somehow using the front-facing camera that would be a game changer!
