Description

Rediscover your music collection with version 4 of Harken, a beautiful yet simple music player for your iPhone or iPod that uses gestures to control playback of music and podcasts synched from iTunes, streamed from iTunes Match, or bought with the iTunes app on your iPhone, iPod or iPad.

Harken has a unique bottom-based navigation so you don't have to do gymnastics to reach buttons at the top of the screen - all the primary controls are located at the bottom of the screen.

Get super fast access to your music with the minimum number of taps needed to listen to albums, artists, compilations, composers, genres, playlists, songs or podcast episodes.

Create an on-the-go playlist* from a combination of albums, artists, compilations, composers, genres, playlists, songs or podcast episodes.

Sort your library to find music you haven't listened to in ages, or by rating or recently played to quickly find your favourites.

You can also shuffle all albums or songs by a single artist, composer or genre - see Settings to change between song and album shuffling.

Does your music have lyrics? Tap the lyrics button to see them.

Choose from dark or light themes, full-screen or small cover art, and even use your favourite font to make Harken *your* music player.

Harken For iPhone is perfect for use in the car or when your iPhone is sitting in a dock and connected to your home stereo:
- playback controls are so easy to use you don't need to look at the phone to play, pause, or skip tracks
- larger than standard text is easy to read when the phone is mounted in a cradle on your wind shield or dash board
- the screen does not turn off automatically**, so you don't have to unlock the phone to control playback

Podcast support - simply sync podcasts to your iPhone or iPod with iTunes.

You can also play iTunes Match items, or hide them via the app's settings, but due to a restriction with Apple's support libraries, the music does not get saved to your phone. Nor is there an indicator of the download progress. Songs will start playing once they've downloaded enough. I'll add better support for iTunes Match as soon as possible but it will depend on Apple choosing to enhance their developer kit.

Harken has loads of features, and I'm constantly adding new ones that my users request.

*On-the-go playlists are not stored. Use iTunes if you want to create permanent playlists.
**Battery usage will increase while the screen is on.

If you have any feature requests or feedback, I can be reached on Twitter: @iosdevben.

And if you like Harken, please take the time to rate and leave a review: it really helps independent developers like me.

Now you can see artist names in their original form, instead of all-caps. Just go to settings if you don't want all-caps.

Thanks to Michael Weinmayr for suggesting this feature via Twitter!

Also fixed a bug with searching: quotes and apostrophes were not correctly handled.

Allow the user to choose which email client they'd like to use when submitting feedback - required because the app was crashing when Apple Mail was the only option and the user didn't have a mail account configured.

Make the text in the search box visible - was black.

You can now view lyrics for any song that has lyrics - either ones you've added manually via iTunes or where it's added automatically by Apple. This may mean you don't see any lyrics but just add them in iTunes and sync your iPhone with iTunes.

This feature was requested by one of my users, John Landry. If there's a feature you'd like to see in Harken, please contact me via the Settings screen in Harken.

Bumper update: View your library by Composers, and sort by play date.

For the classical music lovers, you can now choose to view a list of composers with songs grouped by album by those composers.

If you want to play something you haven't listened to in ages, or want to focus on your current favourites, sort by recently played. Albums are also now sorted when you're viewing your library by Artist and Genre.

The last couple of features have been at the request of owners of Harken For iPhone. If you'd like to see a particular feature go to Settings to send feedback. I'd love to hear from you. :)
4.0.3
2017-06-04
When creating an Instant Playlist, you can now shuffle it. If you add multiple albums to the playlist, and have shuffling set to "Albums", Harken will play the albums in random order. You can still just play all the items in order if you press the play button.

I'm also working on saving the playlists so you can access them later.
4.0.2
2017-05-19
Rediscover your music collection with the completely redesigned and rewritten Harken for iPhone 4. You can now create playlists from all media types, sort your library to find music you haven't listened to in ages or by rating, choose from dark or light themes, full-screen or small cover art, and even use your favourite font to make Harken *your* music player. You can also play iTunes Match items, or hide them via the app's settings.

In v4.0.2 I've fixed a bug: music would be shuffled when you tapped on an album and had the shuffle setting set to "songs". Music should only be shuffled when you press a shuffle button.

Big overhaul this time. Along with a more modern design, there are the following changes:
- see a list of all songs
- create a playlist via the library menu screen
- adjust the volume from within the app
- shuffle and repeat are more accessible
- toggle the backlight timer (when on/highlighted the screen will stay on)

If you like Harken, please take the time to leave a nice review: it really helps.

phubenthal,
works well, looks great
All the functionality of the built-in iOS music player (except radio, which I don't miss) PLUS one-touch album playing, podcasts, the ability to mix songs, audiobooks and podcasts in a single playlist, and an elegant interface that's a pleasure to look at. Love it. Ben's been steadily developing the app and has plans for more improvements in the future.
gyropilot,
The ONLY Music App I Use
Simple, clean, easy to use interface. I love the clean, uncluttered, easy-to-use interface with nice big album art. This is perfect for use when in a vehicle because song play is controlled by taps and gestures anywhere on the screen.
BiggEarn,
Acceptable
Sorry, some of the reviews i read said this app would cure my issue with the iPhone Apple app and cure the Cover Art issue. The Apple app has asssigned most of the Album Civer art completely wrong. This app did not help that issue.
SteelMagnolia8,
Can’t figure it out
Not easy at all to download music from iTunes. :( I had high hopes but it’s back to the drawing board ...,,,,,
健次,
One of the best replacement apps for music and podcasts
I use Harken for iPhone pretty much everyday, especially to listen to podcasts while driving. It's easy to use, looks good, uses gestures that are natural, and the programmer responds positively to feedback. (For my part, I try to keep that feedback useful. :-) About the only thing I could ask for at this point is a universal app; I have it installed on my iPad anyway.
