A long overdue update including a couple little tweaks:

• The "Year" sort option has been replaced with a smarter "Release Date" option. This will take full release dates into account (when available), and default to "year" when release dates aren't tagged.

• Some miscellaneous bug fixes, including one that apparently allowed the odd podcast to sneak in.

• I'm aware of the issues some users have reported regarding unusual behavior with the "repeat" playback setting. I believe the root of this issue is small changes to the functionality at the iOS level itself. I'm collecting info to determine what might have changed and how to address it. If you notice a repeatable pattern, please let me know!

SongOwl development is like a west coast party, as Coolio taught us, because SongOwl development don't stop.

This update introduces a subtle but powerful addition to paths. You can now set path-specific settings:
• Show/Hide cloud items
• Show/Hide explicit items
• Long awaited, limit paths to compilations-only!

I've also made some ASO improvements, so hopefully more people will find about SongOwl. You can help with that! Please consider leaving an App Store review, and/or spreading the word on social media. Thanks in advance :)

• Stability and animation improvements.
• Stay tuned, though! There are plans for further enhancements to Paths.

Please consider supporting future SongOwl development by leaving an App Store review, in-app tip, or by spreading the word! Thank you.

It’s our first minor update. That means new features! #noice

Probably the number one comment I get is regarding the playback queue. Where is it??? Unfortunately, iOS API limitations do not provide a method for accessing the system player queue and current workarounds are severely limited.

SongOwl 1.1 now includes the Next Best Thing™.

Queue Builder is a new tool for creating and manipulating a collection of tracks. Simply swipe on a song or group of songs to add them to your Queue Builder list. Tap the QB Touch Bar to access your list. In the Queue Builder pane you can:

• Play your queue. Once you begin playback, your queue will no longer be available in Queue Builder, but you can still add tracks using the Play Next and Play Later controls.

• Randomize your songs (as many times as you want)

• Apply any of the standard sort options.

• Drag and drop to create your own custom order.

• “Lock” songs to the top of the list. Locked songs will not be re-sorted or randomized.

• Swipe to delete songs.

• Made something perfect? Turn it into a playlist.

• Clear your Queue Builder list and start over.

I recognize that real-time access to the playback queue is still the gold standard and will continue efforts to realize it. In the mean time, I hope Queue Builder helps restore and expand on that functionality.

Please stay safe!

What are y'all searching for? This update covers off a few errors caused by people apparently searching for nil.

Also want to say a big hi to all the Chinese users who have tried SongOwl in the last 48hrs or so. Stay tuned – translation is coming next week!

Removed some substring parsing from search. Substring parsing breaks apart your query, so you could search "friends ballad", and get "The Ballad of Me and My Friends." I applied this to all evaluated fields which, in retrospect, was foolish. It could add a ton of "false positives" that maybe included a common term like "the" in an unrelated field. Stupid, right? Good thing I don't code medical equipment. Anyway, substring parsing now applies (much more sensibly) ONLY to song names; so those confusing false positives should no longer appear.

• NEW Action Menu: press the view summary (track count and duration under the 5 action buttons) to access Add to Library, Add to Playlist and New Path actions.
• NEW Shortcuts: Play or shuffle only your loved songs with new Siri shortcuts and URL scheme options.
• Fixed the Now Playing dismissal gesture in iOS 13.4!
• Crashlytics roundup.
1.0.3
2020-02-25
• NEW manual dark mode. Set dark mode for SongOwl independently from the iOS system setting.
• SongOwl supports tagged lyrics. When not present, the lyrics pane now provides an option to switch over to Apple Music.
• Fixed bug causing some users to not see their playlists in the "Add to Playlist" contextual menu.
• Fixed some threading issues causing the odd crash.
• Misc. other little bug fixes and visual glitches.

Some love for Love!
• Grouping and sorting preferences in the "Loved Songs" section of the Favorites tab are now saved. These views can now be added to Favorites as well :)
• NEW convenience action: easily love/dislike the currently playing song by double tapping the artwork in the player, miniplayer and widget!
• NEW option to disable the "swipe to skip" gesture in the player pane.
• Rounded up some minor Crashlytics exceptions and stability issues. So far SongOwl has been very stable. I am monitoring one mysterious issue that has cropped up exclusively on iOS 13.4 which I believe is specific to the beta and has been reported.

And speaking of love, have you reviewed SongOwl yet? User reviews help the app gain traction and show up higher in App Store results. If you've enjoyed the first week of SongOwl, please consider leaving a review and letting me know. Thanks!

snorkjuice,
My instant favorite music app
I started testing this app in beta several weeks ago, and it very quickly became my all-time favorite music player. Thanks to its customizable navigation tools, I can finally do a bunch of things I've always wanted: group a playlist by album, see all songs by an artist in one list, sort just my classical music by composer, and lots more. On top of that, the user interface is really solid and comfortable, and it's gorgeous to look at (the artwork color scheme matching in Now Playing is lovely and subtle).

Before SongOwl, I'd been happily using Cs Music, a fine app from the same developer, and it was a great improvement over the built in music app. But SongOwl pushes the envelope a lot further, and I could never go back. Take a little time to get used to the new navigation possibilities and you might just love it too.
JeffBDVS,
Really clever app
If you spend about a half an hour getting a feel for what this app can do, you’ll be impressed. I guarantee it.

App delivers a very clever way to sort through your music library and your playlists to get you to the music you want to hear quickly. And the paths you take to get there are saved and can be custom-named.

I have a path that takes me from a genre to a list of artists to a list of their songs grouped by album.

Want to see when the last time was that you played a track by Bon Jovi? Group songs by artist, sort them alphabetically, find Bon Jovi, and sort their songs by last played date. Most recent will be at the top. Reverse the sort order and you’ll probably find a Bon Jovi track you forgot was in your library at the top of the list.

Using Sound Owl together with this dev’s outstanding Miximum app, a poor old Windows user like me may finally be able to ditch iTunes for PC to manage my Apple Music library.

Five stars, absolutely.
Nathen1989,
Not as amazing as it was hyped up to be.
As a long time CS music user, I was interested in Song Owl as the developed claimed it was, in a way, CS next gen. After a week of use, I couldn’t tell what the advantages of the app were. I listen to playlists, not albums and most of those are Smart to begin with, so sorting and browsing isn’t relevant to me, which is what this app seems to be designed for, sorting and browsing - actually listening being an afterthought. At least CS music allows you to change star ratings from the Now Playing view, a feature not present in Song Owl.
FYI, if you use Miximum, by the same developer, you will lose the ability to specify CS as your default player after changing it to Song Owl, even if you delete Song Owl.
Overall, I don’t know what Song Owl was / is supposed to do that his other apps weren’t doing. I’m disappointed that I paid money for it, as the developer’s other apps are functional and well written.
Carlamatic,
nearly there
as a longtime Cs/Cesium user, i pulled the trigger on SongOwl without hesitation. and i LIKE it! still no chance for viewing or changing the queue, but that’s on Apple and their ridiculous rules.

this is a simple, intuitive app and i feel like it’s a good path forward. that said, there are a couple features i might like to see. it would be nice if, in addition to the long press, one could get info on a track with a right swipe to expose the i button. it would also be nice if there was a way to advance to the next track when on the get info screen, rather than having to close the screen then long press on the next track.

it would also be nice if i could set SongOwl to reopen at the last view. as it is, if it has to relaunch the app it defaults to the Library view. i have my music organised in playlists, so it would be nice if i could set it to open in the playlist view. if that makes sense?

anyway, thanks for another fantastic music player! i’m looking forward to seeing where SongOwl and Cs go from here!
Steve 76849,
Great organizational app.....
I really like the way it looks and acts after it’s set up to my preferences. Since my library is somewhat disorganized, due to the way iTunes has separated my albums, this is helping me get them separated properly because of the way it shows album artwork and lets me see which albums some of the disorganized is supposed to be. Great job and I looking forward to the future with this. Also have Cs and love it but probably won’t open much anymore since this is available 😁
blackmail1807,
Doesn’t work with Smart Playlists
I listen to my music almost exclusively through Smart Playlists, and unfortunately SongOwl is useless for them due to a bug: as soon as I enable any sorting (e.g. by album) in such a playlist, it shows almost the entire library instead of just what’s in the original playlist. Just by looking at the number of songs in the playlist, it somehow depends on how I sort. Miximum doesn’t have this issue.

As an example, I have a playlist of the last 200 songs I’ve added to my library. When I group it by album, it suddenly contains 6304 songs. By artist, 6036. By album artist, 6021. By composer, 1817. By genre, 4236. Clearly, dark magic is at work.
thecadenbaker,
amazing app 5/5
did exactly what i needed it to do. i was recently listening to my chill mix provided by apple music, and i didn't realize that the “Love” feature doesn’t actually add the songs to a smart playlist unless that song is already in your library. my chill mix updated soon after, and i thought i lost the songs forever… this app showed me every song and i e be more pleased! amazing work!
N1NJAZ1LLA,
Fixed my problem with Apple Music on iOS 14
Apple broke Apple Music with iOS 14. This app fixes that! On iOS 13 I was able to shuffle songs from specific artists (including songs they were featured in). We are unable to do that on iOS 14. This app just saved Apple Music for me! Thank you so much! I would love a toggle for the Artwork-Themed player. I would love it to be just black like on iOS 13. Other than that I love this app! Great job!
Platform001,
The one feature I want
Please please please include in the next update the ability to pick up in the middle of a song even if you don’t use the app for several hours at a time. It is super frustrating to have to go back and relaunch and hunt to where I was listening to before, especially during longer songs in live albums. This also goes for the Cs Music app.
Amighty,
Great interface but no real Queue control
I’ve used CS music player for years and this is basically a polished bug-free version of the same thing. A lot of great features and it looks great - Personally I love having access to all the metadata and play count info for my music. Unfortunately there is still no way to see or manage your up next/now playing list. It seems to be a limitation of iOS, but it makes it a little bit incomplete nonetheless.
