Description

-- About Ginger --
Ginger offers on-demand, confidential emotional and mental health support through live text-based coaching, video-based therapy and psychiatry, and self-care resources — all from the privacy of your smartphone.

-- What does it cost? --
Select employers and organizations offer Ginger, including unlimited behavioral health coaching, at no cost to their employees, members, and their dependents. Depending on your organization’s plan, you may have a limited number of therapy and psychiatry sessions covered, after which you would be responsible for the cost of the session not covered by your insurance. Depending on your health plan, the cost for accessing coaching, therapy, and psychiatry services through Ginger may vary depending on your specific benefit plan. Please contact your benefits administrator for more information.

-- About our behavioral health coaches --
Ginger coaches are trained professionals with an advanced degree and/or coaching certification. Ginger coaches have at least two years of professional work experience and undergo an additional 200+ hours of specialized training every year. Coaches are full-time employees of Ginger, and yes, they’re real people.

-- How does coaching work? --
Coaches provide support through real-time, text-based conversations in the app, so you can easily and privately chat with your coach any time, anywhere. Coaches are available on-demand for immediate support and through regularly scheduled sessions. We know texting isn’t easy for everyone, which is why we also offer a speech-to-text option. Coaches also help you get the right level of care and can direct you to a Ginger therapist or psychiatrist if you need extra support.

-- Therapy and psychiatry --
When more support is needed, video-based sessions with a licensed therapist and/or psychiatrist are available, with evening and weekend hours. If you feel therapy and psychiatry may be helpful, please reach out to a coach who can help you with the next steps.

-- Self-guided resources --
Our in-app library of skill-building resources includes activities, podcasts, videos, articles, and more. New recommendations are suggested based on your needs and can help you with a range of topics, such as anxiety, stress, relationships, and career challenges.

-- Available in Spanish --
Ginger is available in Spanish for individuals who are age 18 and older and have access through their employer or organization. Ginger in Spanish will be available soon for all health plan members.

-- Confidential and secure --
Conversations between you and your care team are confidential. Ginger is HIPAA and EU GDPR compliant and HITRUST CSF certified.

-- Get started --
If you have access through your employer, download the app and tap “My Organization,” and follow the steps. If you have access through your Health Plan, you may have received an email from Ginger with a unique code. Simply download the app, tap “Enter an Access Code,” then enter the code from the Ginger email and follow the steps.

Swimsalot1,
A life support when I was not knowing where to turn
So I found Ginger when my doctor’s office referred me and my insurance said it’s a company they go through for care. It was a little tough for me at first because I really knew nothing about behavioral and mental health but it was eye opening once I started. It’s great to have an actual team, yes an actual team of people working together to focus on helping me improve my health. I can meet with all of them virtually so long as I had access to internet or cell phone signal. I video chat with a therapist to work through what’s causing my health issues , I video chat with psychiatrist about medications I’m using with my treatment and I text-chat with a wellness coach weekly to work through actions, habits and thoughts that help with my care. They all can read the notes the other ones write about my care and can work with me on anything I need help with to improve my health. Also whenever I’ve had a more pressing concern I have the ability to contact member services and they have worked with my care team to get me information or care sooner if I was in between appointments. For what I’m going through and in this time of pandemic Ginger’s convenience and structure has helped pick me up from probably one of the most difficult places I’ve ever been in my life. So I’m just thankful for it.

Game Changer
The mere condition of the American health care system (with all of its inefficiencies, bureaucratic loopholes, exorbitant prices, and corporate insensitivity) is enough to give people mental illness. But ginger is such a breath of fresh air that is making some serious steps to provide meaningful care for Americans. This is a system that genuinely thinks about user needs and is using technology to cater to people, not to exploit them. It is so easy to set up, the customer support is amazing, and they’ve really developed good systems to bring consistent support to your care. Not only has it been significantly to book sessions with a therapist (no wait period plus crazy flexibility), there are other elements like coaching and exercises that provide nearly round the clock attention in a sustainable fashion. This is a mental health service that understands the complexities of modern, hectic life and brings the care to you on your terms. Frankly, the sense of control I feel just in my experience of navigating my health has contributed to me feeling more in control of the rest of my life. Plus, my insurance covers 100% of it. I know this sounds like a marketing pitch and I am going off on listing adjectives, but please do not take my passion for insincerity. I am just so grateful for ginger and think this could be a huge help for millennials (and gen z-ers) like me!

Ginger coaching app experience
As someone who prefers communicating over text as opposed to talking over the phone (which my other options would have me do in this situation since the pandemic) when I first learned that I could talk with a credited wellness coach over text, I was totally sold on the idea!

I have a sponsored plan (thanks to Kaiser) to cover said coaching via text based chats through the Ginger app, and after having my first session late one night (they have coaches with flexible hours, an added plus) I had a lot of confidence in this approach to have someone help me through my anxiety and depression symptoms at a time and in a way that’s convenient for me.

It’s been a month now since I started weekly sessions with my coach and she’s been super helpful. I connected with her right away and I believe others like me will also have a pleasant experience using this app.

Good in theory but Fails to deliver
Ginger is a decent concept for people with mild mental health issues but the execution just fails to deliver in my eyes. The coaches often find themselves having to chat with multiple clients at once. On the flipside, the client then goes to other applications on their phone while awaiting a reply, taking them out of the moment. It’s a disruptive, bumpy process. Video chatting is an option for those who seek therapy over coaching; however access to therapy is capped after two months so how deep can you really get? The main resource upon which Ginger is built is the catalog of self-help cards. These are generally 3-5 page reads with bullet points that are grounded in science but so generic and common-sense sounding that most will just skim them without driving much benefit. There are some cards with audio portions as well. To those who enjoy such meditations, this might be helpful. As Headspace and Ginger integrate further, perhaps this will become a more prevalent feature. For coaches, this is definitely a preferable app to something like Talkspace (formerly talktala), but there are plenty of ways to run a remote practice now on your own. For prospective clients, if your employer offers ginger at no cost, then they likely offer other health benefits that will enable you to see an individual therapist (even remotely) at little to no cost outside of this app. Have your therapist work for you, not for a tech company. All the best 🤗

Crazy train
Ginger could not determine my eligibility then said it had an engineering problem then said I could get some coaching then kept asking formoney then they said I didn’t need to pay just contact the coach but the coach said I have an insurance issue .. which I don’t. While denying me service they contact the insurance company and get money for intake but took me into nothing and say I don’t have insurance they can’t help me. Then they abruptly decided I do. Finally I got the coach. The person is rarely online. Says off line during the office hours. Then I make contact. She says I need to have coaching goals. I don’t know what this means so she says if you don’t have the goals I can’t help you. Then she’s go s again offline. I ask another coach and I cannot find out. The second coach says I’m playing games i need an appt he says I say how can I get the appt? This is not answered. In his profile he touts himself as empathetic while texting messages that are aggressive and unkind. He booted me off platform and now I have no coaching but then again he has saved me since for 9 weeks there was no coaching not anything that would barely resemble it. Each contact was used to reject me and hurt me. This company seems to be geared to using patient names to get money from insurance contract while trashing the patient/customer whose name is used ti get the company money.

Poorly designed mental health assistance.
All around I am upset with my Ginger experience. I had to transition from TalkSpace to Ginger with a change of insurance and was extremely disappointed. As someone who has had multiple years of experience in therapy due to many traumas, I will say this was one of the worst of communication techniques as you cannot reach out to your therapist in any way and the system is designed to charge you immediately even if a work crisis arises if you miss one session. In the design there is a “coach”, memsership services, and the opportunity to meet with a psychologist. As someone who prefers to only have face to face meetings, I did not use the coach much. In regards to my therapist, the individual herself was great at her job but due to scheduling conflicts she cancelled on me often and changed my times without my consensus due to inability to communicate with the app design. I ended up getting charged an extra 135 after she changed my appointment without my consensus which all around frustrated me with the app- my money was never refunded but rather recharged again. I attempted to continue despite the disappointment but continued to be let down with my therapist cancelling on me another 2 times in a row. The site then canceled my services due to “inconsistency with therapy.”
I would recommend utilizing any other app.

Company probably needs more staff/more reliable team
I’m thoroughly unimpressed with this app/service. The coach I was assigned was slightly late for our first scheduled meeting a few weeks ago, nearly 10 minutes late for our 30 minute meeting the next week and then just didn’t even show up/check in for our next meeting. Scheduling with a therapists was also a nightmare. You have to text with member support to schedule your initial therapy intake. They began with messaging me to get me on the schedule only to take hours to reply to my response and this has been fairly consistently happening throughout trying to schedule this. It took two days to get a date scheduled with a therapist, with them offering me dates and times for me to respond that that date works only for them to respond hours later that it’s no longer available. This would have been a quick process on the phone or on a live chat where the representative is giving you their immediate attention for the time it takes to select the date. I honestly think companies would be better off putting the money they pay for this service in their employee’s HSA to use towards a better suited mental health support program/service.
💙noa💙,
More Stress
The app itself is relatively user friendly. But I did not have a good experience. The “Coaches” never had anything helpful, they would ask me what I thought I needed to work on, and then repeat it back to me, and that I should “work on incorporating that”. But why i’m finally deleting the app is because of the “cancellation fee” I received when I rescheduled 24 hours before hand. I was out of state due to a family emergency, and when I realized I would be in a car full of people during my scheduled therapy session, I immediately rescheduled. It did not go too into detail about the charge I would accrue by rescheduling, so I went ahead and did it. Things do happen, people take advantage of cancellation when other patients could have been using that time. I understand that. But this was my first reschedule in a situation I couldn’t change. As a young working student just trying to juggle life and bills, this caused more damage than the good the session could have done for me. If the pop up after selecting “reschedule” told me the charge clear cut, I would have just dealt with being in the car with other people. But who knows, they may have cancelled it on me and charged me anyways!
melindroth,
Terrible billing/ administration even for the health care industry.
Billing system is atrocious. They will take over 8 months to bill you for claims and then bill you for every claim for the full year all at once and expect to paid in 2 days. Outrageous and unacceptable.

I switched jobs and had a change of insurance and everything that could go wrong with their system processing the change did. Despite my checking and rechecking and doing everything possible to prevent any mishaps. TWO months into new sessions I now get an email about how ‘they can’t find my new insurance on file.’ I did not want to resume sessions without ensuring everything was covered by current insurance first! I said this repeatedly! This is the worst nightmare scenario! I may now be in the hook for paying out of pocket, when I tried repeatedly to prevent this from happening!!

The ‘care’ team is only average, you might as well just google what you want to ask the coaches, if you like little animations there are better apps for that, and nothing is worth dealing with an administration/ billing team and system that is so disorganized, unclear, unhelpful, and bad at their jobs.
Katja88945,
Hit or miss coaches and inaccessible app
My first coach took forever to text back so over the course of our 40 min initial session, we probably exchanged about 20 texts so it was hard to stay engaged. She was clearly copy pasting her texts from something because of the grammar and typos (e.g., “Ask them how they feel about…”). Then, she pretty much ghosted and was impossible to track down. I needed more support and accountability than “reach out to me when you want to chat.” The second coach has been better because we actually scheduled standing check-ins but it still feels a little gimmicky with more or less boiler plate responses and lack of deep knowledge in psychology. My biggest gripe is that the app isn’t iPad compatible/keyboard compatible. I have a disease that sometimes makes it hard to stare at a screen and type on the phone. Sessions would also go much faster if I could use a keyboard.

PLEASE make the app keyboard accessible!

Also have had many glitches with scheduling and random coaches being added to my team. If they could fix the app and hire more competent people I’d raise my rating.
