NeemaSherry,
Heart line Study keeps me moving!
I joined the Heartline Study just before the pandemic shut down our world. I am basically a sedentary person, but also competitive. If I was not in this study and did not have an Apple Watch, I would not be exercising...period! Since I signed up for the study, I have not missed a day of at least 30 minutes of exercise. The app reminds me to stand during each hour, so if I’m relaxing or spending too much time on my computer or iPad, it gets me moving, at least a little every hour. The weekly information is pretty basic. But it reminds me of the importance of exercise and thinking about what foods I choose and how much I eat. If I did not have this app during the past four months of physical distancing, I would have been leading a much more sedentary life. I feel I am healthier since I started using the app. I did not realize how many things the Apple Watch could do for you. Until I signed up for this study, I had not used an Apple Watch. It is wonderful. I’m so glad I am using this app to the fullest along with my Apple Watch. I have recommended the Heartline study to many friends. I do not know how many are using it. I would recommend it to anyone who is considering the study. Oh, and by the way, you get rewarded with points for certain activities, mostly readings, which turn into money. I have not spent any yet. I may wait till I can shop in a store, though I can redeem my money online as well. If you qualify...get this app!

Easy to use with snippets of heart-healthy information
I saw the ad for the study this app is used for in AARP Magazine. It mentioned the possibility of getting a subsidized iWatch for taking part. I thought the study might be useful anyway and if I got the watch that would be a bonus. By signing up you get weekly (more or less) emails or notices on the app that link to brief but generally informative notices. By reading through those you accumulate points that translate into $$. I happened to also get selected for the iWatch pool so was able to buy the larger watch for $79 plus tax I think about 70% of those registering can opt into the iWatch pool but there is no guarantee until you sign up. You also have to have original Medicare. Some Advantage plans may join in the study but I’m not sure about that. The study will last approximately 2 years and you need to agree to be in it for that period. BTW, you need an iPhone for the watch to pair to.

The information they send is fairly basic so far (a month into the study) but is quick to go through. If you read through their legal information you will see that they strip personally identifying information from any data they collect before sending it along for analysis. Since Apple is a partner in this study I felt my info would be fairly secure but you will have to make that determination for yourself. Hopefully the information they gather will be if use so I’m happy to have signed up.
Snapper 15,
Very informative
As I was approaching 70 years of age, I felt I should do whatever I could to maintain or improve my health. A friend had told me about the Heartline program so I enrolled and got the Apple Watch for free! About 10 days after starting to use it, I was watching TV while relaxing on the couch. I heard a little noise from my watch and it told me that it had detected an irregular heartbeat. I was instructed to perform an ECG which told me that I was in a fib. It was a total surprise as I had no symptoms or past history. It then instructed me to consult my doctor and she sent me to get a heart monitor. I wore it for two weeks and to my surprise I had 25 episodes of a fib in that two weeks. Again, no symptoms to alert me that there was a problem. So then I had to have an echo cardio gram to check how my heart was functioning. Everything checked out fine in my heart so now I am on a blood thinner and a beta blocker. I’m so grateful to have learned this before a big problem presented itself. Now the Heartline app is sending me all kinds of good information to help me understand how to better care for myself. I can’t say enough good things about it. I talked my husband into joining the study as well and now we are both working hard to get our rings to close!

Making a Difference
I learned about the Heartline Study from an AARP email. I have become more conscious of my health as I age but have not always engaged in the best practices. Prior to COVID 19 I had established an active schedule by joining a local senior center. I particularly enjoyed swimming and water aerobics. Unfortunately the center closed in March 2020 and still has not reopened. It was my thinking that the Heartline Study app would be a motivator and support for me to become more active. In addition my mother had heart issues and in later life was fitted with a pacemaker so I have always been concerned about my heart health. I do faithfully have my annual physicals as well as have the recommended periodic tests for an individual my age. Participation in the Heartline Study app enables me to become more knowledgeable of my health status and provides tools to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I am in the Apple Watch group which allows me to utilize technology to achieve health related goals. I chose to “borrow” the Apple Watch rather than purchase it which I have decided was a mistake. I had never owned an Apple Watch and did not realize how valuable it would be in achieving my health related goals.

Extremely Helpful Medical Tool
The app is simple to use. It interacts with your Health app & Motion. It gives you a “challenge” every Monday to walk for 1 or 2 minutes every hour for 12 hours. Starts out just a few days a week & increases to 7. I’ve found that easy to do. It’s visual in your Health app & on your Apple Watch. You also earn points by reading the articles on a health topic as they are posted each Monday in the Heartline app. These points are worth money. I’ve had palpitations every great now & then for 12 years or so. The last 2 years the frequency & how long it lasts has increased. Spring of 2021 I found this app & the study. I signed up & got Apple 6 watch & discovered that these were episodes of atrial fibrillation lasting up to 1-1/2 hours. I showed my doctor the info on my iPhone and he sent me to cardiologist. They did a month long EKG which confirmed the atrial fibrillation & started me on Eliquis, a blood thinner, to help prevent strokes. All the other tests were ok. I return my doctor soon to find out what next. I highly recommend this app and joining the study as it may have saved my life and/or quality of life.
Astronomy chic,
My Heartline research study life
I am so thankful and grateful for being able to participate in this study. It changed my life for the better. It’s been an amazing 2 years that’s quickly gone by. I have learned a great deal about myself. The articles to read are short and concise. The watch part of the study is a tool I hope to have forever. So much joy from it. I have contacted customer support once when my phone needed to be replaced and they are superior people that focus on you!! Great problem solvers they are and so patient for a 70 year old chick. I morphed from my former unstructured self into an improved model by participating in this study. My preset watch has helped me in so many ways it’s difficult for me to put into words. I have tremendous respect for the researchers and their knowledge to help me and others from the data collected from the study. I am sad it’s ending for me, but I will continue working on my own with the framework instilled into me. Many heartfelt thanks to all for this life changing journey!!

Heartline App
I joined the Heartline Study after learning about the study on the Quest website, because my mother who had always been a vibrant person was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation in 1987 at the age of 65. At that time I had never heard of the term and didn’t understand the ramifications of the diagnosis. My mother and her physicians had a difficult time managing her a-fib. She subsequently had a number of TIA’s, developed dementia from the strokes, and died after a major stroke at the age of 78.

I have always had a fear of developing dementia, so this study is something that I take seriously. I am in the group who has an Apple Watch to use, and I have found the watch extremely useful in monitoring my health. The study itself is well done. It is not too time consuming to participate in. The activities in the study are motivating, and I am reminded to work on good health practices. I would recommend this study to anyone who is interested in improving his or her health.

Overall, I’d like the information provided by the app. However, I missed many points because of the lack of sync between my watch and the phone. I completed almost all the exercises, but particularly near the end of the study, it looks like I didn’t, because I didn’t get credit for hardly any of them. We need a way to be able to access an archive to redo exercises that don’t come through with credit. I’ve been doing this so long I feel a sense of loss that the study is over so I hope you will continue to collect data from us to benefit mankind and to help people with heart conditions. On a separate note, I would like to have a blood pressure app on my Iwatch because that is very important and I am missing it. I would also like to have some kind of thermometer. Thank you for the opportunity to participate in the study. I found the feedback of the Asa portion, extremely valuable, and help me determine sometimes whether to call EMS. My doctor reviewed the data every time I went into the Cardiologist’s office I know he found it helpful, too.
spinozaonthetrail,
I am wearing a watch!
It has more than 50 years since I wore a watch. Dick Tracy never had it so good! The watch and the apps are easy to use and though I thought I would find the watch uncomfortable it is not. The initial setup was easy as I have been an iPhone user for more than 10 years and a Mac user for 32 years. Identifying the icons at first was an issue but that was quickly resolved as with any other questions I came up with, though I thought it was funny to call apps “complications.”

The directions are pretty clear as to what the study is asking. The activity circles are a constant reminder to be active. Set the face of the watch to show it. The Heartline messages/emails are clear, concise, and easy to read and understand. I just sent off a question about entering data in my profile yesterday is the only issue that I have had so far that has not been resolved by either looking at the Heartline app or the watch app.
Curves gal,
Your study saved my life
I’m pretty sure Heartline saved my life. On July 21, 2022, early in the morning, my Apple Watch tapped me on my wrist and told me I was in AFib. It also contacted my family. After consulting with my primary care doctor and a cardiologist, they ran several tests on me including wearing a heart monitor for a month. They found that I do have AFib. My primary care doctor increased my blood pressure medication and now I am under the care of a cardiologist who put me on blood thinner medication. Since three of my grandparents and my father died of strokes there is a good chance that the same thing could happen to me. I wouldn’t have even known that I had a heart problem if it hadn’t been for the your study. My Apple Watch now also keeps track of my AFib History, which is a little scary, but at least now I know that I need to keep an eye on it. Thank you so much for possibly saving my life.
