Description

Create 3D scans using the 3D camera (FaceID or LiDAR) of your iPhone 14, 14 Pro, 13, 13 Pro, 12, 12 Pro, 11, 11 Pro, XS, XR, X or iPad Pro! Export scans into STL, PLY, OBJ, GLB (glTF), share them and more. On older devices, you can use the ordinary camera mode or the Screen Sharing feature.

This app is *PAID* up-front. Why is it free-to-download then? To protect people with unsupported devices from buying it (more details at the bottom of this text).

Heges is divided into two modes:

= 3D Scanner (**PAID**, requires one-time In-App Purchase)
============================
- Available only for the iPhone X, XS, XS Max, XR, 11, 11 Pro, 12, 12 Pro, 13, 13 Pro, 14, 14 Pro and iPad Pro with TrueDepth camera and/or LiDAR sensor as an In-App Purchase (Why? Read more at the bottom.)

- Create 3D models by scanning everyday objects
using the selfie TrueDepth camera (FaceID) and/or the rear LiDAR sensor

- After scanning, export the models into PLY, OBJ (both with colors),
STL, GLB (both without colors) file formats

- Share exported models e.g. via built-in Wi-Fi server or
view them in the iOS Files app

- Use the physical volume buttons to toggle scanning session

- Double-tap anywhere in the live camera view to Share Screen with another iPhone/iPad,
so that you can better see what you're scanning

- View the models in AR

- You can scan in pitch-dark environment and use Heges as a night vision camera!

- Choose from the available scanning precisions — the higher
the precision, the shorter the scanner range

- To get the most accurate scans, you must use the selfie FaceID camera with 0.5MM Precision settings; do not use LiDAR if you need accurate scans

- The selfie FaceID camera is much more accurate than LiDAR (approx. one order of magnitude),
the models in the promo videos were scanned using the selfie FaceID camera of iPhone X

- Use the selfie FaceID camera for scanning fine details (up to 2 millimeters accuracy with FaceID and 0.5MM Precision settings)

- Use LiDAR for scanning large areas (e.g. houses, hallways, rooms, etc.), LiDAR is NOT suitable for scanning small objects with detail — use the selfie FaceID camera for this purpose

- Objects in scanner range are highlighted in the live view

- Switch to the passive Night Vision where there're no
explicit restrictions on the scanner range

Instructions for the 3D scanner:
- Move slowly when scanning

- Make sure that most of the captured scene is within
the scanner range

- Please read the FAQ at https://hege.sh/faq

The scanner isn't perfect and can fail when moving too fast or scanning a challenging environment (e.g. glass surfaces cannot be captured due to the nature of the TrueDepth sensor).

A NOTE FOR iPHONE 13 and 14 USERS: The iPhone 13 and 14 lineups introduced new TrueDepth (FaceID) camera designs, which produce lower-accuracy results compared to older devices.
To get best scan accuracy, consider using any iPhone 12 or older with FaceID.

= Color camera mode
============================
- Available for all devices

- Manual camera focus

- Sharing photos via built-in Wi-Fi server

= Why don't you make the app paid on the App Store? Why the annoying In-App Purchase?
============================

It's for protecting people with unsupported devices. (I wish I could make it paid directly on the App Store.)

Heges needs the 3D-sensing selfie FaceID camera to be able to capture 3D scans. But not all iPhones/iPads have the FaceID camera, so the app needs to check if your device has FaceID before it allows you to buy the app.

The App Store does not allow developers to check if your iPhone/iPad has FaceID, so the only way to check is if you download and open the app. Once you open Heges on your device, it will check if your device is compatible and if isn't, then you will not be able to buy it.

Mykel3D,
Best mobile 3D scanner for iPhone X
I’m kind of blown away at how well this scanner works. It’s not perfect however compared to what’s been available this is incredible.

The biggest issue is not the 3D scanning, its the “WiFi file sharing” feature. While I suppose this could be useful I really don’t understand why the developer doesn’t let you just share using the expected avenues such as email, iMessage, save to phone or air drop. I don’t even know what it means to wifi share a file is to be honest... I’m still not sure how to access the scanned data.

I’m guessing file size concerns have something to do with the choice to WiFi share/export your 3D scans, maybe the app isn’t very strong with managing the captured scan data? I think it would be nice to at least have other export options. At very least make it more clear on how you send/receive captured files over WiFi. Also, adding .fbx and .obj as file format options would be fantastic. Right now the .stl files are strictly catering to 3D printing apps. .obj and .fbx would be easier to share with industry standard 3D modeling applications, like C4D, Zbrush, Unity.

Still giving it 4 solid stars (assuming I figure out how to accept a shared WiFi file). The quality is really impressive and again, compared to what’s available, this is amazing.

Please polish and continue working out the bugs, this is a really promising app. Finally getting some use out if this iPhone X depth sensor!
NewHouse 303,
The best
I have used different scanners of the years (Sense, structure Sensor) and also trialed different “big name apps” with not much success, until Heges. I started using it a month ago or so and have created dozens of scans. It’s accuracy for me is key.

However, I am also very impressed with Heges, and Mr. Marek Simonik the developer. Let me tell you why:

For example, the mere fact that the mirroring connects - and stays connected to another iPhone or pad - the way it does is way superior to the other apps I tried so far. This is very important since it’s just not easy to scan 360° objects without having a projection of what is being scanned in real time.

Second, the vibration mode is an excellent indicator of the scanning process and status. If tracking is lost, it’s easy to know without having to look at the iPhone’s screen, and saves time.

Third, the accuracy and definition of the scans are very high with the Face ID mode and the option to share/save/upload them to a dropbox folder is a very helpful feature.

Fourth, the adjustability of the precision and range features enable the user to customize the app for the next scan.

Fifth, being able to start or stop a scanning project by using the upper Volume button is really helpful.

Finally, the quality of the support and responsiveness from Mr. Simonik are simply incredible.

If I could give a 6th star, I would.

Thank You.
Mirage420,
Hands down the best one on App Store
I don’t generally review things, but I literally tried and bought every scan app on the App Store, and this one is by far the best. The biggest complaint I had about the other apps is that you had to go super slow and be extra steady when scanning or you would instantly lose tracking. This apps tracking is good enough that you can move at a pretty brisk pace (within reason for 3D scanning of course) and it doesn’t skip a beat. Also most other apps lose tracking if you have your phone stationary and are moving the object in place, such as on a turn table. Never had an issue with that using Hedges. And for the small one time fee, it makes it even better since not only does it scan faster and more accurate, you don’t have to pay a subscription to save your scans, like most other apps. Definitely worth the small fee in my opinion.
JumpManGo,
Image mirroring reverses text
App scans better when I also slowly move the phone in a ~4” circle perpendicular to the object being scanned. I expect the IR pattern is inconsistent and this manner cleans up the scan. The sensor also seems to have a regular error pattern, which indicates that an initial calibration against a flat surface could be added to the app (apple should do that as part of manufacturing and lock the calibration matrix into each phone). Many times the app will mess up if you get too close. Likely better registration using the color camera and the phone gyros could prevent that error.

When using mirror option, the text also reverses. Please keep the text “normal”.

The academic papers on RGB-D scanning for deformable objects have some great new algorithms to register in post processing. This app would be amazing if it could perform those algorithms, or send the data stream to the cloud for post processing.

Ideally I’d like to be able to walk around my house, moving closer to some objects and further away from less interesting areas, and have the entire house rendered. It would be even cooler if I could do the scanning over multiple sessions and they would all be merged together.

Does the output to STL maintain accurate measurements? Is 1mm in a scan going to be reflected as 1mm in the STL?
whycantiusedanteasmyname,
Disappointed with results
For almost $10, I’m disappointed with the quality of scans taken through this app. I didn’t expect the same quality of scans that are achieved by $500+ pieces of dedicated hardware but I did expect, at the very least, to scan multiple sides of an object without the scan automatically quitting. Although moving the device slower and modifying the scan settings, per the recommendations listed in the FAQ, does help slightly, the scans continue to fail regardless of how careful I am. The only way to scan all sides of an object, in the current state of this app, would be to take individual scans of each face and then stitch them together on a third party application. I understand the limitations that the developer faces and I am aware of the amount of work that has gone into this app but I cannot recommend it for it’s current price. I do not intend on seeking a refund for this purchase but I kindly request that the developer consider returning the application to its original price, until the 3D scanning functionality is improved.
Bad Bullet,
Best detail in a phone scanner I’ve used
I can’t seem to update my other review, so I’ll add to it here as Heges is my go to scanning app after trying nearly all of them in the store except those that charge insane amount to own the app or subscription fees. While it does have some issues tracking of objects if you try going around all sides, Heges is by far the app to capture the most amount of detail from the depth sensor. The others are either a fixed resolution, or give you the option for high definition, and even that doesn’t come close to the 0.5mm option Heges lets you scan at. This extra resolution is worth taking separate scans and stitching them together. For those that work with 3D, this has been a normal workflow for scanning for some time. But if Heges gets better tracking and repositioning of the scan, I’ll up it to 5 stars.
MightyBohab,
Not sure what happened!?!
This app used to be one of the best LiDAR scanning apps on the Apple App Store. It was super fast and detailed. The app would capture incredible detail. The models would come out smooth and complete. Now it barely does a decent scan. I don’t know what happened. How did it go from amazing to bleh? I have scans to prove it. You can literally see them progressively get slightly better… then they just fall off a cliff.

I think you tried adding to many different features, or maybe Apple limited your ability to communicate with the LiDAR sensor itself? I’m not sure but can you fix it? I want my app back. I used to tell everyone about this app. My uncle upgraded to an iPhone 12 PM just for the LiDAR.

I really hope you read this, and please do not get mad. I’m not trying to get you all riled up. I just want you to know what I’m seeing, from the customers perspective. I’d gladly pay for this app if it worked like it used to. Please fix it.
Arbitrage8,
Great mobile 3d scanner!
I’ve used it with my CNC machine to carve some wood selfies. I’ve also used it to capture wood carvings and fixtures from antiques. With a little practice and a steady hand, I can capture the fine detail, load the .stl into Blender and clean it up. I save the clean .stl and import it into my cnc software for cutting the wood. This would be a great tool and process for anyone with a 3d printer, also. I wish there. Was a way to see my screen while I’m scanning though. Someone mentioned a selfie stick with a 3d gyro as a way to steady the camera.

Great app when I’m on the go and see something that catches my eye for a model. Keep up the good work and thanks for app.

Update: I have since printed an attachment with my 3D printer. Amazing what you can image with a mirror. My favorite app on my phone.
Taitsistihkc,
This is what I have been looking for for years!
I was always trying to look for a 3D scanning app that actually works. Then I got an iPhone X and then I found this app. I am amazed at how this app uses the TrueDepth sensor to sense the structures of objects, even in the dark! (Which is also interesting for using it as a night vison camera). I haven’t actually tried to scan an object for practical purposes but from playing with it a bit, sometimes it can get nice scans, but sometimes it gets confused and the whole scan suddenly turns out weird or it may not scan much at all. When it does work, it works pretty well. I am amazed!
wbarnhill,
TrueDepth required for 3D scans!
First off, the app looks to work quite well and is a bargain at $2.99. I’m excited to build a platform for my phone to scan objects for 3D printing.

I see some folks are confused as to why the app has an in app purchase for 3D scanning. Developers can only limit app compatibility by iOS version in the App Store. By using an in app purchase, the dev can check the model of the phone prior to allowing someone to buy the upgrade. This ensures no one accidentally buys it without having the hardware to use it (and leading to refund demands/poor reviews). Don’t bash the dev for this limitation by Apple!
