This is an absolutely massive update filled with tons of performance improvements, interface refreshes, and implemented user feedback!
Support:
- Support for (and only for) iOS 14
- Support for the new iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, and iPad Air 4
Interface:
- Completely rewrote the interface using Apple’s new SwiftUI
- Support for landscape orientations
- Improved ASCII art viewer so it can zoom out to show the entire image at once no matter the aspect ratio of the image and device
- Uses the built-in navigation bar for the main app for more a consistent style and transitions
- More proportional design on iPad
- Uses a more consistent and accessible color palette
- Improved VoiceOver and VoiceControl support
- More informative alerts
- Uses new iOS 14 features like button menus to make the interface more fluid
- A more informative info screen, including links to the source code and a bug reporter
- Moved to SFSymbols so icons are more consistent with the rest of iOS
ASCII Generation:
- Completely rewrote the algorithm to utilize Apple’s Accelerate vImage framework so it is now 550% faster (on average)
- New additional image processing so your ASCII art is much more clear and defined
- Now accounts for the rectangular shape of the ASCII characters so your ASCII art will no longer be stretched vertically
- Fixed a bug where some images would randomly be squashed and rotated or have black bars appear
- Support for more than 8-bit color images (fixes crash when a screenshot was converted)
- Support for more file types (fixes a crash when a JPG was converted)
- Support for more colorspaces (more accurate greyscale representations)
Sharing:
- Sharing an image now is at a much higher resolution so you can now zoom in without it being a blob
- Sharing an image and text now uses the iOS share sheet, allowing for you to share to many apps, along with saving or copying, right away
- Uses Apple’s database instead of Google’s in the iMessage extension for better security
I’ve had a lot of fun working on this update! If you’re enjoying it too, a review would really be appreciated.
