• Use the Artiphon app to play a custom-built collection of sounds that includes: guitar, violin, piano, drums, ukulele, bass, vibes, wind, bells, organ, electric piano, square wave, sine wave, and triangle wave.

• Design your own instruments by combining techniques, sounds, and tunings, and then save those custom presets to your personal library.

• Use this app to choose the modes and methods for playing your INSTRUMENT 1. Modes include Fretted, Fretless, Grid, and Pad. Methods include Strum, Bow, Slide, Tap, and iBow.

• Use the app to configure and store custom presets that you can then access when connecting your INSTRUMENT 1 to your favorite music software like Ableton Live, GarageBand, Logic, MainStage, Cubase, and more.

• Use the Artiphon app’s built-in arpeggiator to automatically cycle through notes and chords in Fretted, Fretless, Grid, and Pad modes.

• Use the app’s iBow feature to play the INSTRUMENT 1 using your iPhone or iPod as a virtual bow.

Quick Summary

• Introducing Smart Strum, our new favorite way to play pretty much anything
• Improved MPE Compatibility for synths in GarageBand, Logic Pro X, and more
• All factory presets have been refined and updated
• Pitch bend range is now 48 (adjustable), and CC11 is now CC74

Smart Strum

Introducing an entirely new way to play your INSTRUMENT 1: simply press anywhere on a fret and strum the whole chord! It’s a supremely fun and simple music-making too–whether you’re a beginner or a virtuoso, songwriting has never been more intuitive. Check out our YouTube page for some video demos.

MPE Compatibility

Multidimensional Polyphonic Expression (say that three times fast!) allows MIDI controllers like The Artiphon INSTRUMENT 1 to automatically play nicely with apps like GarageBand, even when using fretless techniques and pressure sensitivity. Trust us, you’re living in the future.

New and Improved Presets

The INSTRUMENT 1 now plays even better right out of the box. This update brings a few changes to the standard presets. Violin is now fretted, Piano is a “just the white keys” pad tuning, and drums are mapped by region (kick| snares | hats | cymbals | toms). In addition, we’ve refined all of the factory presets for better playability and versatility.

Other Tweaks and Fixes

• New Pitch Bend slider lets you switch between 12, 24, and 48-note bends for better compatibility with your older synths. It’s set to 48 by default.
• Tap is now an available method in Fretted Mode. (Previously you had to change the Hammer-On Sensitivity to “Tap.”) You can still strum on the bridge using this technique.
• Channel Pressure is now sent from the bridge in Tapped Grid and Pad presets.
• String bending is now available for Fretted Bow presets (for auto-tuned violin vibrato, of course).
• Hammer-on sensitivity settings have been refined for more control, fewer unintended notes, and better fingerboard muting capability.
• Bow method now sends Brightness (CC74) instead of Expression (CC11). Crazy, right?
• Tutorial animation has been removed from the app. Visit start.artiphon.com for videos, tutorials, and app recommendations.
• Tilt and Pressure effects have been removed from many of the sounds, they will return better than ever in a future release.

Version 1.1 Release Notes
iOS APP 1.1.0

The 1.1 update brings new functionality and improved playability to the INSTRUMENT 1 firmware and Artiphon software for iOS.

String Flip

The String Flip feature uses the INSTRUMENT 1’s built-in accelerometer to automatically switch between lefty and righty tunings based on how the instrument is held.

With this update, String Flip becomes a global setting, meaning your preference will persist even when you change presets. This should make it easier for astronauts and other players in zero-gravity environments to play without the INSTRUMENT 1 accidentally flipping between left and right-handed tunings. For those who play some presets left-handed and others right-handed, we’ve included an override feature that is preset-specific.

Sensitivity

New and improved sensitivity settings are now at the ready.

Method Sensitivity
Whether you’re heavy-handed or have a feather touch, you can now more easily achieve the volume and dynamics you seek.

Hammer-on Sensitivity
Avoid unintended notes by turning the hammer-on sensitivity to Low or Off. Or enjoy a fingerboard that is so sensitive you can simply tap to play notes. In other words, you can now dial in the ideal action for Eruption by Van Halen.

Aftertouch Pressure Sensitivity
You can now adjust the amount of pressure required to activate effects with aftertouch. Try this with pressure-sensitive sounds in the Artiphon iOS app (such as Square and Sine waves), or with your favorite synths in GarageBand.

Tilt Range
We’ve added a new slider that allows you to select the angle range that activates the Tilt feature. Set a low tilt range to use smaller, more precise motions, or set the range much wider to put on a real show.

Arpeggiator

The Artiphon app’s arpeggiator feature allows for fun “auto-play” and “auto-strum” playability. With this update, the arpeggiator can be set to different subdivisions of the global tempo. Simply selecting ¼ notes, ¼ triplets, ⅛, ⅛ triplets will allow you to find your groove much more quickly.

MIDI Program Changes

MIDI program changes 1–8 can now be sent by pressing the INSTRUMENT 1’s volume knob. In Ableton Live, Logic Pro X, and other software, you can now switch instrument tracks, press record, play/stop, and perform a range of other options simply by pressing the volume knob. Your live show just got a whole lot smoother.

iOS App 1.0.7
With INSTRUMENT 1 Firmware 1.0.40

New Feature: String Bending

With the new String Bend feature, you can now bend notes by applying pressure to the fingerboard.
In Fretted Strum technique, string bending allows you to press on the fingerboard to pitch bend the string.
To turn on the feature, tap the “A” icon to go into Settings where you’ll find an on/off switch. This switch can also be found in the INSTRUMENT 1 Editor for Mac/Windows.

New Feature: Tilt

Rotating the INSTRUMENT 1 can now shape sounds in new expressive ways.
Using the built-in accelerometer, tilt the INSTRUMENT 1 to control the mod wheel in the Artiphon app, GarageBand, or any other MIDI app that supports this input.
In a horizontal position, the mod wheel is at zero. It starts activating at 15 degrees, and is at max value when the instrument is in a vertical position.
To turn on the Tilt feature, go to Settings where you’ll find an on/off switch. This switch is also available in the INSTRUMENT 1 Editor for Mac/Windows.
When using the Artiphon App, Tilt controls a filter sweep effect. In third-party music apps, mod-wheel (MIDI CC 1) can often be mapped to control any effect.

New Feature: No-Note is now a tuning option

You asked and we built it: individual strings can now be turned off.
New tuning presets have been included for instruments with four or five strings like banjo, bass, and violin.
No-Note can also be assigned to grid or pad locations.

Update Mode Light Show

A new LED pattern indicates that the INSTRUMENT 1 is updating. We hope you like it :)

Audio Effects On/Off

On/off switches for delay and reverb are available in the “More” section of preset settings.

Reset App Preferences

In Settings, use the Reset button to bring all global parameters to back to their default settings.

Bug Fixes

Verification Hash Error blocks firmware updates.
The first time a note tuning is edited, the note will de-select.

Known Issues

Lightly tapping the bridge with tap method can double-trigger notes.
Pressing hard near the edge of a fret can cut off the note. This can be obvious when using String Bend.
Changing the sound in the Artiphon app resets the capo setting.

Fischyeti,
Crashes the iPad every time I connect
The device is good and the software is ok, but it crashes my iPad every time I connect the instrument - not a good experience. As this is now a fairly “old” device I doubt this will get any attention but it’s very annoying.
Jarsby,
Waiting for an update for iPhone 12 mini
The app is confusing but functional—and they only way to manage the settings on the Instrument1, but it doesn’t display properly on the iPhone 12 mini screen. Settings are cut off and buttons and other selections unreachable.

It’s extremely frustrating to buy an excellent MIDI controller and have to use bargain basement software to configure it.

Still waiting months after the model was announced and released for what should be a minor issue to fix.
rexford82,
Please please please make it Aum 3!
I love the instrument but so much more can be done with it!
Wrave,
Not what I expected
To be clear, this is a review of the app, not the instrument. Artiphon is a very nice MPE controller that is slimmer than most others while offering a grid. I foolishly didn't check out the app or software before my instrument came in the mail. What a disappointment. It's just not intuitive to change all of the elements. They are interdependent when they should be completely open and orthogonal. for example, changing from fretted to unfretted will also change your tuning. What? Why? You're supposed to be able to save presets to the dots but they always revert back to factory settings when you switch away. Presets just forever go to die in the my presets folder. I figured out i could Drag one around but i cant put it anywhere or delete one. Also it's complete crap that I can't change the settings of the guitar, violin, keys, and drums. Especially for the string instruments, I like nonstandard tunings and every time i pick up this thing i'll look at the guitar icon but then have to say to myself "no. Wait. Don't use that one because it's tuned wrong."
Last thing: this is a MIDI device so I NEED some control over what channels it's sending. There's a bunch of apps the instrument 1 can't talk to probably because they don't understand MPE. You've got to let users turn that off if they want to.
Go back and rewrite this app, Artiphon. You made a beautiful piece of hardware that's just so crippled by the software.
Dr Rick Williams,
So disappointed
I love the artiphon hardware, but the software, (this app) is absolutely terrible. you cant really do anything with it, as far as presets, you can create your own, but you cant save them to the device reliably, and try to delete one.. nope. you have to uninstall/reinstall the app to clean things up. This device had so much promise, but was completely hobbled by this crappy app. what on earth were they thinking? It would seem artiphon pretty much abandoned the device, leaving it a paperweight. I use it with other MPE software, but cant really depend on it, as the settings on the device itself really depend on this idiot app. Maybe if they let you program the app with midi cc codes, as a workaround, but ,, noooo .. they wanted it to be proprietary, and succeeded … unfortunate.
computersrbad,
Great hardware, terrible software
I love my Artiphon (well, except for the battery that drains overnight while the Artiphon is turned off, but I digress). However, this software is mostly unusable. On an iPad Pro 12.9”, panels arbitrarily show around the screen, half of the interactive elements don’t respond to touch. And unfortunately it is necessary to configure your hardware—so I am no longer able to change anything on the device itself now. Even when the layout is fine on smaller devices, the UI follows few standard UI paradigms. Managing presets, especially updating existing items, is bonkers. This app could be a beautiful companion to an amazing instrument, but it’s non-functional, difficult to use, and appears abandoned.
snugsallstar,
Not useable on iPad Pro 12.9
No idea how this even passed App Store review. None of the App buttons to adjust settings even work on iPad Pro 12.9. The instrument is likely great if you can adjust to your playing style but without a working app, the whole thing is a huge waste of money. Artiphon doesn’t reply to support emails & hasn’t updated app in over a year so it doesn’t look like they care beyond selling you the instrument. What do I need to do to use my Instrument One? Buy an older model iPad? They won’t even tell us that much. If you can’t adjust the settings, it’s just a $400 piece of plastic.
myspace.com/nichcope,
App makes your $400 product worthless for lefties
Feel like I was just robbed of $400. I’m left handed and your settings are inaccessible on both iPhone and iPad screens, so I cannot flip to left handed as your marketing materials indicate I should be able to. You must either hate left handed people or love selling products not ready for market. Hope you use the $2,000,000 you raised to fix this... with funding 6 months ago and that basic app function still not working, it seems less likely that a fix is coming and more likely that for lefties this is the fyre fest of midi controllers.
lofidelityrockr,
The Artiphone is not cheap. So why is the app so lousy
To fully utilize the hardware the software should match the quality. So why does this look like a child’s app? I have learned to check the app out before making a large purchase on gear I need because if the app is clunky especially this far after the instrument release, the the developers probably don’t care about the hardware as much. Otherwise, they should want the best user experience for the money. I don’t want some clunky gear I can’t update in 6 months because the software isn’t supported properly.
Jay6828378,
This update broke the app!
1.0 was working flawlessly even on a 10+ iOS iPhoneC! Now when you launch the app it just instantly closes! Nearly 1gb of memory and just can't seem to get the app working... Wish I could get the old version back but apple wont allow... Oh and since they took the App Store off of iTunes, good luck getting the previous versions-_- Please fix this asap guys! Or give us one that at least works! Anyone else having issues?
