Description

ThumbJam is a powerful musical performance experience. You get over 40 high-quality real instruments multi-sampled exclusively for this app. Hundreds of included scales allow you to effortlessly play in any style from rock to classical, whether you are a musical novice or a seasoned professional.

---====---
Jordan Rudess, the world-renowned keyboardist for Dream Theater says:

"ThumbJam stands at the very top of the overcrowded music app world. The sounds included absolutely rival those found in pro instruments and making music on the app is a total joy. The only problem I have with this app is that I did not make it myself! Luckily, I'm able to work with the developer and offer a few good feature ideas as well as some choice sounds from my personal collection!"
---======----

Even if you've only played air guitar, ThumbJam lets you sound like a pro. Pick an instrument and jam -- with all the scales to choose from you'll never hit a wrong note. The high quality instrument samples will make you sound like you just skipped years of music lessons.

For the performing musician, this app is awesome for soloing on an instrument you didn't bring along. Play in any key, any style -- go from a string ensemble to a wailing guitar. ThumbJam was developed and tested by musicians to feel and sound like a real instrument. You'll be surprised at how expressive it can be, make sure to check out the videos and audio at thumbjam.com.

ThumbJam makes use of tilt and shake to add vibrato, tremolo, note bends, and volume swells for more realistic and expressive results. It supports up to five (eleven on iPad) simultaneous touches and up to 32 voice polyphony, for each of up to 8 loaded instruments! Delay and stereo reverb add depth to the sound, and a resonant lowpass filter gives you more tone shaping power. Put on your headphones or plug in to your home stereo to experience some of the highest quality instruments in the App Store, even after all these years!

Build your own loops from the ground up or import your favorites and jam from there. Layer as many loops as you want, with different instruments for each. Export your loops as audio files via WiFi. Copy and paste audio from other apps using AudioCopy/Paste as well the general pasteboard, via email, AudioShare, iTunes Document Sharing, Files, or open directly in another application. Supports Audiobus and InterApp Audio for streaming sound to/from other apps in real-time, including state save/restore with Audiobus 3.

Extensive MIDI input and output support over WiFi or Bluetooth, with any CoreMidi compatible device, or other apps on the same iOS device with virtual MIDI. Now also supports Ableton Link for tight sync between apps on the same network. Supports MPE input and output (and did so before it was even a thing)!

New powerful arpeggiator feature lets you play patterns with perfect time sync, from the screen or via MIDI control.

The app includes a huge variety of scales, from western to eastern. Save your favorites for quick access, or create your own in-app. You can even import new scales in the Scala format for complete flexibility.

You can also record your own multi-sampled instruments using a built-in or attached microphone, or from file import.

Version history

2.6.11
2022-07-24
- Removed deprecated bluetooth collaboration feature so the app will run on iOS 16
- Fixed pitch bar issues
- User imported scales are now sorted alphabetically (by filename) and are deletable now from the scales chooser
- Fixed Scala file import issue
- Fixed status bar overlap issue on older iPads, and correctly shows it on newer iPhones
2.6.10
2022-03-25
- Added new MIDI input option "Use Adaptive Mod Wheel (CC1)" which when enabled will treat incoming CC1 events according to what control settings are used in the preset. This restores a past feature which allowed you to use the mod wheel as volume or pan if those are enabled as touch controls in the preset. It already allowed using the mod wheel for filter cutoff if that was enabled.

Please let us know if there are other items or issues you'd like to see added or fixed in a future update!

2.0
2011-11-19
ThumbJam version 2.0 is a major update with many new features, including full CoreMidi support, new import and export options, custom scales, mic input control, and much more.....

MIDI Support Updates

** Supports CoreMidi via wifi and wired with the iPad camera connection kit and USB midi interfaces (in/out).
** Line6 MidiMobilizer support for midi in/out
** Akai SynthStation support for in/out.
** There is midi input support for all of the above so you can play the ThumbJam instruments with external controllers.
** Virtual midi port support for communicating directly between apps running on the same device. You can use other controller apps to play TJ running in the background, or use TJ as a controller to play other synths. Full poly bends and note tie support for smooth continuous bending with compatible controller apps.
** Cool new feature for midi input, Scale Lock. When enabled all note input is mapped to the currently selected scale. For instance, if you play up the keyboard on adjacent white keys you get the next note of the selected scale for each white key pressed. It's surprisingly playable, like the ThumbJam equivalent for keyboard controllers.
** The mod wheel controls parameters selected as an x-axis control or v.tilt volume, using whatever ranges are configured in the patch.
** Recorded audio loops now save a corresponding midi file alongside for later import into sequencers, etc.

Instruments:

** Support for instruments based on stereo samples
** Several new synth instruments built-in
** More on the way via free in-app download

Loop Mixdown

** New options for mixing down the current active audible loops to a single WAV file.
**A similar feature in the loop mixer to let you bounce the active loops down into a new loop, while muting the originals.

Scales

** Make your own custom scales in the app.
** Quick-change scale/key user preset buttons now available.
** Split screen now supports different scales on each side, as well as key.
** New set of Indian scales to more accurately represent common usage.

Effects updates:

** Reverb now has separate sends for each loop.
** Resonant low-pass filter now available, with X-axis or tilt controls for cutoff and resonance.

Import/Export/Copy/Paste:

** SoundCloud audio sharing support added. Easy sharing of loop mix-down, session or arbitrary audio file to SoundCloud, with integrated optional posting to Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr (via soundcloud mechanism).
** The Copy/Paste (now Export/Import) page lets you choose to mixdown the current active loops and copy that to the clipboard, or do the usual browse thing.
** Added option for Paste, to immediately make a pasted loop the actively playing loop.
** ThumbJam can now import Instruments, LoopSets (in ZIP files) and audio files from Mail attachments, Safari web browsing, or other apps that handle documents.
** iTunes Document Sharing support for direct import or export from your computer.

Miscellaneous:
** New visual look.
** Ability to load two instruments simultaneously for quick switching, or play using split screen.
** New additional sidebar for access to more controls quickly
** New mic input control mode, play the ThumbJam instruments by singing, humming or from playing anything that produces pitch into the mic! Very responsive pitch tracking, a really fun alternative input method. MIDI output from it is also produced, so you can use it as a realtime audio to MIDI setup.
** Bluetooth audio output now works when available.
** Improved tuner during sample recording and instrument creation.
** Sustain bar available to make it easier to sustain notes
** Pitch sidebar can more precisely set the note range on screen, not restricted to octave boundaries.
1.3.2

- Fixed issue where ThumbJam would reactivate in the background without proper cause.

- Fixed issue that caused occasional silencing of audio when returning to the app.

- Increased maximum simultaneous number of touches to 11 for the iPad, and eliminate stuck notes.

- Fixed issue with pitch bend not being reset properly when dragging to a new note.

boboneill,
a long-time favorite
(v.2.5.2) the innovations keep on coming! fellow ipeople, if you like creating melodies or harmonies...or if you enjoy learning about music theory, get this app. i am now finding ways to use thumbjam as a self-study music tool. by creating a rhythm in something like Figure, and importing it into Thumbjam, i can experiment with various scales and intervals. fun stuff!
(v2.5) this was the first music app i owned; thumbjam remains one app i use each time i do something creative. this latest update just shows how committed the dev is.

making music with this app is easy. if you don't have it yet; get it!!
polarpaul,
Great app & Support
The new update to add Audiobus 3 MIDI support includes the ability to use ThumbJam as a scale filter so it will take input MIDI notes and use the closest note in your scale in ThumJam to output a note. Since ThumbJam supports importing scala files you can have all sorts of microtonal scales in addition to the wide range of scales already available in the app.

The developer is one of the best at continuing to update and support his apps.

Thumbjam is even more useful now that it can be played in landscape orientation on the iPad. A rock solid app you can't go wrong with. It's a great midi controller too.
Minhala,
I would give this 10 stars if I could.
I love this app. I don't know much about music and many of the other apps I've downloaded we're just too difficult to use. With thumb jam, I can just noodle around and make pretty music. I've recorded some of my flutes as instruments and I can now play duets with myself. :-) Hint: choose a nice scale like C major or Blues Pentatonic Minor and all the notes sound good together. I wish some things were slightly easier like exporting and stuff like that, but otherwise I just have a lot of fun with this app.
Conticreative,
One of the most fun apps on my phone
I am amazed at the versatility of this app. I don’t use it all the time, but occasionally if I need a specific sound played in unusual ways, this is my go to app.
The only drawback I can think of would be to have a piano roll and a better way to handle loops. This makes a perfect looping app, having so many sounds, but the loop interface is very simple.
That said, one can use it with all kind of looping apps as an add on.
Aside from my DAW I’d say this is the best music making app on my phone.
Wickharps,
Great app, responsive support
Love this app! However I did have a problem with it I couldn't solve without help. The answer was not in the user guide and I got no response when trying to register for the thumb jam forum (noticed no new posts since early 2020). I was eventually able to contact the developer, and he ultimately issued an update to solve my issue (CC1 control)!
Lundberg02,
Wow
I haven’t had enough time with this to give it a five, but looking through Sound I found trombone, and since that is my instrument, I decided to try it, not expecting too much, since other synths that do brass range from close but no cigar to just another synth note. I was startled to hear a real bone, and gliss, vibrato, and maybe even tremolo. Can’t wait to spend more time with this. The app name ought to be changed to something like Realjam. I am really impressed, because ,I, like many iPad Pro owners, have many many synths, and some of them can’t even begin to synth brass.
Gunther Becker,
Truly a must have
This app has a special quality to it that can't be described - it has to be experienced first hand. Easy to dive into, but loaded with many deep (and incredibly useful) features. The UI is well designed and a pleasure to use. Sound quality is, of course, excellent. The MIDI features included with TJ are also stellar. Can't recommend this app enough.

To the developer - fabulous job. 👍
Chimona Chimea,
This app is amazing, multifunctional, one of a kind on iOS
This app does so much. If you like to use the touchscreen as an instrument it’s perfect. You can do pitch to MIDI!! I’ve heard you can do auto scales of incoming notes as well, but I don’t like auto scales so don’t know anything about that. It can send MPE MIDI to other instruments and you can use any MPE controller to control the sounds built in or the ones you import yourself.

One of the best
ThumbJam is one of the best midi controllers in the AppStore. It comes with a huge library of instruments for free. The sample quality of the instruments is outstanding. The devs haven’t sabotaged the app like most others do. Since picking up this app years ago they have release more instruments and loop packs for free. This is my second 5 star review of the app (update for current version).
Steaders5,
ThumbJam Love
I know I’m a little late to the party but I just want to give ThumbJam some love and recommend it to anyone who hasn’t discovered it. Not only is it a great app by itself and very deep (if you want it to be) but it’s amazing sounding sampled instruments (of which there are many) can be routed to other apps - for example to Fugue Machine through Aum.
Just sayin’.
