New composer,
Great app for me
This app works well with the iPad Pro. . I use Apple Pencil and it is great! I am able to compose, playback, edit, and print the music. It is worth the,$. One thing that would make it even better would be to be able to use the keyboard without it asking you to select an area to insert a note. Sometimes you need to hear a note or a series of notes before Inserting them in the music.. Perhaps the developer will add an option to turn note insertion on or off when using the keyboard. It would also be useful if you could move the note selector around. I will note that i-am a new user. It's possible that these options already exist and I just haven't found them yet. Would also be nice if the tutorials were updated. Thank you, hopefully the latest update will not cause any issues.
Anh Ba,
Fantastic! Updates Keep Coming
3/9/18 - Once again, another great update. Developer has made this even better. It hasn't left my iPad since it came out and was the first app I put on my latest iPad. (Previously, and still true) Perfect for my use with various folk musics. Valuable tool for copying poorly reproduced, and old (ancient) sheet music. Updates increase its value for me. (Previously, and still true) I have used this app for a while now. It has not left my iPad since I bought it when it first came out. Each version has been an improvement. I requested support using ornamentation and it happened. I like that I can transcribe with ease, and can immediately hear when a "fat finger" mistake has occurred. Plus midi! Received many compliments with the results. Highly recommended!

More Than Notes On Paper!
What a help to have a portable, easy-to-use music writing platform that lets me hear just what I have written, with the instrumentation I want and with the parts (not the voices within a part) balanced for loudness throughout. For live performance, professional-looking separate part sheets are generated automatically.

Though verbal tempo marks are ignored, numerical tempo can be changed at every measure. So to sing a wedding solo with organ in a venue without an organ, I copied out the organ part, writing out the rubato explicitly, and handed my iPad to the disc jockey. No one knew!

Dynamics require two or more staves per part, unfortunately, and the staff for a seldom-used instrument has to extend throughout the score. Maybe fixing this in a nine-dollar app is too much to ask.
Meli9_9ilem,
Composing, transposing, arranging - it’s all here with iWriteMusic
Super easy with great functionality! Incredibly affordable. The developers are very responsive to requests for additional functionality. Great online tutorials to get started, and to discover deeper functions. Really truly, iWriteMusic is competitive with Sibelius and Finale in what you can do; it’s far more intuitive and accessible to the beginner; and it’s a fraction of the cost.

Teachers, use this to help students hear their compositions and their harmonies. Orchestra/band leaders, enter the part, and easily transpose for instruments.

I’ve been using this for years and I love it!
Jusanuthergeeque,
Still Needs Much Work
I have used this app for several years to write drum & percussion scores. Unfortunately, this app has limited support for drums & percussion. I have to make textual notes and use non-standard drum notation in certain parts (i.e. drum rolls, ghost notes, riffs, etc.). Although, I haven’t learned of any music notation apps that truly support drums. However, my greatest complaint with this software is the fact that it crashes too often. I must remember to save frequently. Being focused on my work, occasionally I’ll work for an hour or more, forget to save, then suddenly a crash occurs (usually when using the eraser tool to remove a small item). This is very aggravating, especially when an hour or more of work is lost. Using a timer is critical to remind me to save periodically.
kalam1234,
Must, Must, Must have
If you are just learning to read, write, or play music THIS program is a MUST and for the price, can’t be beat.
I am just starting to learn to read music and play piano this app allows me to write practice reading and playing comps. It also has all the articulations found in my “ How to read music in 30 days” book. I tend to memorize lessons before I learn them so I just write my own.
The book will give examples but I sometimes don’t understand until use this program and type them out.
I am new to music and maybe being 71 has something to do with my ability to learn ,but, this program has been a blessing. I have even written my first song “Where’s My Hat”. It’s not good but I have written a song.
If you are a beginner this program is for you. Most other similar apps charge a monthly fee.
I love it. You might too.
Thank you for reading this.
Dr. Gregor,
Practical Uses
Once you get to know how to use this, it is good. A little tricky at first with some limitations. I used “Finale Print Music”. As they updated it, the so called improvements made it worse. Although
The note size changing was great for students who needed larger notes. The capability to put letter names into the notes would also be great if you want to improve this app. I have not had much success in making a useable recording. Though outdated, I would like to be able to put my arrangements onto a CD or flash.
hawaiian808808,
Tried this and love it!
I was using Touch Notation and it has been good, not great. However, that app hasn’t been updated in over a year and has many problems (crashes, impossible to connect slurs across pages, can’t add sfz w/o app crashing). So I buy this app and at first get confused about the inputting of notes, rests, etc. After inputting one song though, this app appears pretty easy to use and more importantly, stable. Very satisfied!
b8ch,
This is the most valuable app I own
This app has saved me countless hours in transcribing music. I’ve used it for over 6 years and it is far and away the most productive and useful app on my iPad. The developers are very responsive and helpful to questions and clearly understand music theory and what is needed in transcribing music. Virtually every conceivable musical notation is covered. Thanks for all the work you put into iWriteMusic.
Bighorse55,
Wonderful App
I absolutely love this app! I trust it with all of my musical projects. I wish that it would allow more paper sizes than just A4 and letter. Because I would really like to see and use more staves. Other than that thing I really rely on and love this app. Keep going.
