Kanji Teacher knows not only all the 2,136 jōyō kanjis and their readings, but also the 8,000 most common Japanese words and how to pronounce them. This unique combination enables you to learn the Kun- and On-readings of the kanjis and apply and test what you have learnt straight away: both how to read a word and how to write a word you know.

New setting "Smooth drawn stroke":
○ By default, Kanji Teacher aligns a drawn stroke with the correct stroke. This allows for fluent writing, as mistakes are detected immediately and subsequent strokes can be drawn based on them. Experienced users of Kanji Teacher can now disable this behavior - or enable it only when Kanji Teacher detects an error, to continue writing the kanji in a meaningful way.
Two new options allow more control over when the pattern is shown:
○ "Levels for which pattern is shown at the beginning": The default is NEW and FAIL, but after some learning time this setting may make more sense only at NEW.
○ "Show pattern also when": Specifies whether the help pattern is displayed after a test is marked incorrect or the character is drawn completely. The second option can be useful if the strokes are not smoothed, then you can see the correct strokes at the end for comparison.
Other improvements:
○ Implemented about two dozen corrections to words, kanjis, hints, and pronunciations.
○ Removed words and their tests that are 100% identical to a kanji (both the reading and the keyword).
○ Added a new voice and tried to improve the quality of the existing ones. PS: The quality of the voices and the exact pronunciation also depends on the device and is partly out of my control.
○ Font sizes have been slightly adjusted, especially for split screen on iPad and when display zoom is active.
As with every update, a handful of tests will be reverted to NEW because the correct answer has changed slightly. And: I am still working on requests that have not been implemented in this release.

With this new setting you can control if the answer buttons show what they actually mean after answering the question. With WRONG this only happens if the answer was incorrect, and only the incorrect answer is revealed. With ALL it happens always and for all buttons.
○ Auto proceed: OFF, CORRECT (new default), ALWAYS (previous behavior)
This setting defines whether the next test is automatically presented when you release the answer button - or you have to press NEXT (or anywhere on the answers) to continue. Auto proceed helps you to learn faster: with CORRECT it happens if the answer is right, but in case of an incorrect answer you can look at the correct answer calmly and then continue. With ALWAYS it happens even in case of an incorrect answer. One behavior remains the same: As long as your finger is on the answer button or SKIP, the answer remains displayed, only when you release it "Auto proceed" becomes active.
The new default differs from the previous behavior, but you can simply set it back to the way it was before using the settings "Show answer: OFF" and "Auto proceed: ALWAYS".

# Radicals
Learning of radicals is now supported in many different ways: Each Kanji has its own radical in addition to the already present components. In addition to the 214 radicals and 143 components (which cover around 98% of all Kanjis), there are now also own tests and an own Analyze screen that shows which Kanjis are made up of them. Kanjis can now also be searched for using radicals and components.
# iPad
iPad support has been improved. The landscape mode, Split View (two apps next to each other) and Slide Over (Kanji Teacher above another app, e.g. Safari) are also new.
# Keywords
In addition to the existing Kanji keywords (from “Remembering the Kanjis”), keywords from Wikipedia can now also be selected (with a slight modification to ensure the words are unique). These are also available in German, French, Spanish, Italian and Russian. Some of these words are automatically translated and should be treated with caution – as a result it remains possible to specify the keywords (and now also the radicals too) yourself.
# Settings
- The SYNC function is used to synchronize the saved data with the iCloud.
- Kanji Teacher now also offers a dark mode.
- Vibration is used as feedback for correct and incorrect tests.

These tutors accompany the user through the entire learning process, explain Kanji Teacher, introduce new characters, present the tests in the tutor list and celebrate achievements.
# Analyze
In the Analyze screen, characters can now be copied to the clipboard and can also be enlarged using the pinch function. In addition to access to the integrated dictionary, external websites (e.g. for explaining the etymology of the Kanji) are now also integrated. Compounds can now be pronounced aloud, the character have a new animation showing the stroke sequence.

Various pronunciations of words have also been corrected and other bugs fixed. Many thanks for your feedback! - Listening: Words from the basic vocabulary are read out and the user must then choose both the Japanese spelling and the meaning in English. The test continues when both answers are given.
- Compounds: Compound words that are already used for learning the pronunciation of the Kanjis can be listened to in this test. The test queries how they are written and what they mean.
Navigation
- Kanji Teacher now has many more tests and options compared to the first version, including Hiragana, Katakana, vocabulary and sentences. The navigation has been changed to take this into account: The sections “Kana”, “Kanji” and “Vocab” can now be selected at the top of the screen. The tests can then be limited by level (such as JLPT Level), or whether the user only wants to see the highlighted elements or those that Kanji Teacher will suggest next for testing (RL = Recommended Learning).

- A backup is made for each week and each month and also for the maximum learning progress achieved. Backups are found in the “save-files” folder and can be restored using the “Import” function.
- When importing an old version of Kanji Teacher, the original file is also saved.

New Feature „Basic Vocabulary“: A new test "Basic Jap - Eng" with 1000 Japanese words has been added to the Kana group. The associated Kanjis are also displayed, but it is more about learning the Japanese basic vocabulary and reading Katakana and Hiragana fluently. This test also includes some grammatical elements and 60 phrases from everyday life. Please use the Recommended Learning List (RL) to master this test step by step.

Fantastic App
This is a great app that has already been extremely helpful to me only after using it for a few days.
I would like to make one suggestion though. Like thousands of other people I’m learning Japanese via Duolingo, and Kanji Teacher is particularly helpful in overcoming one of the biggest drawbacks with that platform, especially in regards to Japanese (and probably Mandarin), namely the inability to practice writing kanjis & hiragana/katakana.
However it seems that not all kanjis used in the duolingo curriculum are present in Kanji Teacher - or maybe they are, but sometimes under different keywords and hence very hard to find. It would be tremendously beneficial to double-check and make sure that the dictionary supports those kanjis so that a Duolingo student can integrate writing practice as they go along. As I said, some are already present, but unfortunately many seem not to be.
Obviously I have no way of knowing how much effort it would be to make this happen, especially given that KT is a free program, but I think it would make for a perfect companion app to go with DLs massive platform.

Love this app
Hello! I really love kanji teacher. Thank you so much for offering this to all of us! I had a question about the writing practice specifically. Currently, I have to choose which kanji I want to use for the practice. So I choose the jplt level which is great and then I pick one of the colored bars (new, good, ok, fail) and it seems like they each come up only once per practice session. I was wondering if you'd consider a weighted random system where every individual kanji gets a new score added every time you try it. The score depends on how well you reproduced it and that weighted score then gets somewhat randomized so any kanji could come up any time but the ones you fail come up more than most. Just a suggestion 😊.

It’s okay, but hardly useful
I’ve already written to support for this app for a major problem I have, but I’m not entirely sure it’ll be fixed. The other issues come down to how the writing test is implemented, which is part of the reason why I’m rating this so low. Now, I will give at least some leeway with the device screen being so small, but the other problem (the one I contacted support about) is on my device the exercises take up even LESS room somehow than they do in the screenshots shown making them even more infuriatingly harder than they should be. It’s already hard to draw precise lines on a device you’re holding in your hands; next to impossible when the area you have to draw in is about an inch in size and your finger takes up most of that space already.
The multiple choice questions for the reading/keyword quizzes aren’t as bad, but they still suffer a bit from the lack of space since the answer boxes are super tiny.
I’d honestly rather just use the multiple other flashcard apps and find writing sheets online rather than use this. It isn’t fun or interesting, it doesn’t add anything I can’t get anywhere else and it clearly isn’t formatted for my device (and it isn’t even a new large device either; I’m using an iPod touch 6th gen)

Awesome Japanese app
First of all, this app is 100% free, which is great.
It has all of the joyo kanji broken up by JLPT level. And it has Japanese vocab. You can test reading-vocab, or vocab-reading. Kun-kanji m, on-kanji, and the reverse. It has a larger answer grid option, which is nice for when you want more of a challenge.
Only thing is I wish there was a way to study a JLPt level and alll the levels below that level too, at the same time. Also wish there were sound effects when you get right or wrong answer....but those are niggling requests for an app that’s free.
Otherwise, this app is awesome, and is even more incredible that it’s free.
update: thank you developer for replying :) yes starring them should help for now, I will try that. Otherwise your app is incredible.... it would still be awesome even if you charged for it imho. Also, maybe you could add additional vocabulary, with example sentences, as an in-app purchase? There are lots of apps that have the basic JLPT vocabulary but very few that offer more than that, built in to study. Your app is(still) highly recommended for anyone studying Japanese.

Good for refreshers
I’m just getting back to studying Japanese and this has been great for refreshing my memory, especially when it comes to writing. Something I’ve never really seen but would love for the developer to consider would be some sort of genkouyoushi mode. It’s great that you can change the settings for iPad to move the writing area to one side and not be making big, giant strokes. I’d love for the option of maybe 6-10 smaller boxes to show up so I can practice writing in a more natural size (like if you were writing a note for someone) and still get the feedback on stroke order/angles. I will admit that I’m not a fan of the stroke animation when you write. It’s weirdly unsettling, but you kinda get used to it after awhile.

Everything in one app
I’ve been searching for a good app to master hiragana and katakana and to start learning kanji with, and I’m happy to say that I’ve finally found one. Not only does it teach you stroke order for everything I just mentioned (which is super important for telling kanji apart) but it analyzes where you put your strokes and even breaks it down to the radicals and their meaning in each kanji from N5-N1. It also has example sentences with audio and tests/games to quiz yourself on. You can find an app for stroke order, another for grammar, etc but this has everything in one. Sometimes I wonder why it’s free lol. Thank you so so much for such a beautiful app!

FANTASTIC APP!!!!
This app is amazing!! As a busy PhD student, I honestly would have given up on continuing to learn Japanese if not for this app. It makes it fun and easy to pick up and review a few kanji whenever I have a few minutes of free time. The ability to change the definitions of each kanji is especially helpful.
The only thing I wish was improved was the addition of the ability to edit the readings for each kanji. For example the kanji for summer has a couple of different on’yomi (ka, ga, and ge) but the app only has ka. So if they could add the ability to edit the readings for each kanji like they do for the definitions then the app would be absolutely perfect.

Needs more kanji
I use this app and another Japanese dictionary app to review RTK. This app is so wonderful that it allows you to practice writing out the kanji (corrects your written kanji, too) and being able to favorite a few that you want to focus on with flashcards. There are simple games for you to challenge yourself along with a timer and the layout is really appealing.
The only problem I have with this is that there’s not all of the kanji from the latest RTK book and you can’t create multiple lists. I have to use my other dictionary app to create a personalized list of the kanji I’m learning but I’m not a fan of their SRS flashcards like I am with this one. Otherwise this app would be my go to if it had more kanji!

Amazing app and dev
A very very throurough and entirely FREE app with a ton of kanji, writing tests, reading and meaning tests, it offers spaced repetition and even has listening practice with sentences. It's very useful for learning new characters and words, going beyond just practicing. It's also very customizable so you can tailor tests precisely according to your needs if you want to practice just a particular aspect.
Edit: On top of it all the dev is super amazing and actually addresses feedback. On my original review I had commented about a pet peeve in regards to the stabilization feature and they swifly implemented granular options for it. I really appreciate it!

Simple and extremely useful!
I’ve been using this app for several months now, and I really like it. Not many other Japanese learning apps offer the opportunity to add your own hints, mnemonics, etc., so the customization ability is very helpful. And it’s free! I’ve seen lesser apps want money for content that isn’t half as good as what this app has to offer. I’d spend a couple bucks on this.
Something I thought of the other day: Could it be possible to mark kanji so that we have more than one “marked” deck? Basically, making our own decks, instead of just “marked” and “not marked”.
