Description

With Kineo, you can create stunning hand-drawn animations on your iPhone or iPad. Kineo’s flipbook-style drawing tools make it easy for you to create and share your animations with the world.

Kineo shows you faint reminders of the last few pages, making it easy to draw the next. When you’re done, you can share your creation on your favorite social networks; you can even use your very own animations as stickers in the Messages app!

While Kineo makes it easy to create basic animations, it definitely doesn’t stop there. Kineo’s great support for the Apple Pencil lets your creativity flow. Use multi-window mode on iPad to preview your animation as you draw it. Need to take your work on the go? Kineo syncs automatically over iCloud so you can take your animations with you, no matter what device you’ve got on hand.

Version history

2023-07-12
This version of Kineo fixes a rare crash when attempting to delete all of your existing animations.
23.3
2023-05-13
Kineo 23.3 adds animated GIF export—select it as a format in the "…" when sharing an animation!

This version also fixes an issue that could cause animations to not open on iPhone or when using side-by-side windows on iPad.

…that's a soft-G GIF, by the way.

Turns out there's multiple meaning of the word "last"!

Kineo 23.2 fixes another crash, when you're deleting the last remaining page in a single-page animation.
23.1
2023-03-20
Kineo 23.1 squashes another obnoxious bug: if you were looking at the last page of an animation, and deleted it, the app would crash.
23.0
2023-03-14
Kineo 23.0 fixes a few obnoxious bugs:

- A crash would occur if you long-pressed the + button for adding a new page.
- It was impossible to export an animation on the first-ever launch of the app, after seeing or skipping the app tutorial.

New features are underway and should be appearing soon! Thank you for your patience.
22.3
2022-08-24
Kineo 22.3 fixes a few bugs with the gallery view, which shows all your animations:

- When long-pressing an animation, the preview had no background color or image, causing your animation to play over the rest of the gallery instead.
- When long-pressing an animation, there was a "Share" menu item that had no effect. This menu item now works.

This release also fixes a layout bug when running on some future versions of iOS.
22.2
2022-07-23
This new version of Kineo adds a new Kineo Pro feature: background images! Draw fun animations over your favorite photos—doodle on your pets, friends, family, and more!

This feature is available on both iOS and iPadOS and is free to all existing Kineo Pro users.
22.1
2022-05-24
Introducing Kineo Pro—powerful extra features for Kineo! Kineo Pro currently includes the following features:

- Zoom in on your animation! Zooming in allows you to have more control over fine details. The drawing tools stay at the same size when zooming in, letting you draw much smaller lines than previously possible. (Only on iPad.)

- Remove the “kineo.app” watermark that appears on shared videos. Want to focus your videos on the work you’ve created? Hide the Kineo advertisement that previously appeared on all exports.

Many more Pro features are planned very soon, and they’ll all be included in this one-time purchase!

This version also includes bug fixes for all users. This includes a common crash which would happen if you used the eraser and then immediately changed pages. Erasing should now be a much less treacherous act. :)

2022-03-21
This update gives you more power over your animation canvas! You can now select a different color for your animation background, such as a bright blue sky, yellow "sticky note", or black for a cool dark mode! Stickers in iMessage now include the canvas, so you can show off the colors you've chosen.

Kineo also now includes a quick guide for first-time users, to get you started drawing and animating quickly.

This release also fixes a few bugs:
- Scrolling the page strip should always have hidden the "previous pages" images. It now does so.
- In some circumstances, you could accidentally trigger the "welcome to Kineo" page multiple times. Now it will only ever appear once.
21.1
2021-05-02
Sharing your animations just got a big overhaul! Animations aren't tied to an ugly pointy square any more—you can now share them with the canvas you see in Kineo.

Kineo now also supports different video shapes. In addition to the existing square, there's now support for both horizontal and vertical videos, so your videos will look their best, no matter where you share them.

We've also made it easier to switch between looping and bouncing animations—switching between these is now just the tap of a button.

2021-03-02
This update tackles a few of the more commonly-requested features for Kineo. You can now delete, duplicate, and rearrange frames of your animation.
20.4
2020-11-11
Mostly this update is just to squash a few bugs that happen in the new release of iOS, but I also managed to sneak one small feature in there: when taking a screenshot of Kineo, cropping the screenshot will now nicely "snap" to the canvas, allowing you to perfectly align your image.
20.3
2020-08-24
Another small update this time.

- Even more undo fixes. I really think it works this time?
- Better preview when sharing animations.
- The thumbnails in the gallery now have more accurate colors. Make any change to an existing animation to "fix" the thumbnail.
- Fixed the current version number in settings; it now shows the correct version number instead of "20.0".
20.2
2020-07-07
This release is just a bit of spit and polish on everything.

- Fixed a few bugs related to undo.
- Fixed a bug where sometimes a new page would duplicate the previous page.
- Minor visual tweaks (buttons look button-ier)
20.1
2020-05-20

- Minor user interface improvements

Good but keeps crashing
The game is fun but when I delete a slide it will crash then again two so it takes three times to make it not crash when I delete I love this game but that’s the only reason I think it’s not five stars
sxmplyhxiley,
Needs A LOT of improvement
So, I liked the tool bar at the bottom of the screen, but there are MAJOR problems with this app. For starters, it would be so much easier to zoom in and out. When I saw that there wasn’t a feature to do that, I immediately knew I couldn’t use this app. Not just that, but when I wanted to change the frames per second, I couldn’t find it. I couldn’t even find a settings bar. Another thing that bugged me was the onion skin. I feel it’s best to either make the onion skinS a different color, this way I can’t get my frames mixed up. Also, there should be a setting for turning on and off the onion skin. Another suggestion is that I couldn’t find the “layers” for sketching and such. One last thing was the tools, yes, I like the tool BAR but I feel that there should be more (in my opinion). I don’t hate this app, just needs some improvement!! Overall, this app is good for starters in animation. Please improve!! If you do, this app would be amazing!
finnally PATRICK,
This is really good, here are some suggestions
I was really into this app and it helps me practice animating, but here are some things that would help it be better. A fill button would be nice because sometimes it’s difficult to get an object filled without messing up. Another button to add is if you could have less onion skin layers because I sometimes can’t figure out which one was the previous layer, so that would be very helpful. Overall, this app is very helpful and could use some other buttons. I do hope you consider adding this.
Dahbirdcheck,
C’mon Now, fun app and all but..
I’ve been looking at the reviews making sure it was what I was looking for, and yes it is great for beginners; nice and simple. But the first thing I noticed which made me realize this wasn’t for me, you have to PaY to zoom in..??? Pay to zoom in, it’s stupid but I absolutely understand you have to make money somehow. However maybe use another tactic for making money or making the “pro” cost have other features and give the zoom in feature for the free version. Other than that this app is great for starters and for people who want to just have fun, that zoom thing just ticked me off 😊.
Yuto, an average app reviewer.,
Like it, but it needs more features.
Hello, Cocoatype. I am really interested in your app. As far as I’ve tested it, it’s really good. However, here are the features I request in order to make it better.

First of all, I would like to be able to zoom in and out, while also being able to rotate the screen. This is so that I am able to make my animations far more detailed, and work with the smaller brush sizes more efficiently.

On another note, I’d be glad to have the ability to change my frame rate. That way, the animators can choose how smooth they want their animations to be.

My final request is that you could add the option to change the canvas ratio. Most animations are animated in the 16:9 ratio, others with different variations.

I hope I could see these features within the next update!
The_Norseman,
Best app in the store hands down!
I researched flickbook for awhile and boy am I glad I bought it. At first, I thought not having the ability to use your own photos or changing pen size might hinder the app a little, however I quickly realized that they did not make a difference as I was drawing away!

Pros:
Awesome UI, very simple to use, lighting fast playback and a lot of fun. Ollie and Geoff really pay close attention to their customers and to detail. It is very much aprreciated.

Cons:
The only thing I wish for right now is that the pen size could be changed. I read that there might be updates including using your photos and uploading your animations :)
MaybeThatOneGuy,
Essential feature
There’s no Pinch to zoom feature.
cul😀,
LOVE THIS APP
Definitely a great app for fun little cartoons or whatever!
Jakob Wells,
Flickbook vs. Flipbook = ownage
The App Store has been flooded with apps lacking any sort of Mac sensibility—a sensibility this app possesses and it's competitor doesn't. I've used Flipbook, and I was overwhelmed with options, underwhelmed by it's usability, and left with the bitter taste of Windows-esque software. It's clear that the developers didn't focus on cramming as many features as possible into the interface of Flickbook, as the developer of Flipbook did (seems a bit inappropriate on the iPhone, no?), but instead focused on making it pretty, useable, and easy to make flip-books (isn't that what's really important?). While it currently is not as feature rich as Flipbook, I dare say there is no comparison. As others have said before me, sometimes it's more about what you don't put into an application.
VesperDEM,
Seems like a nice app, but probably better suited for a desktop computer
Sure, you can create some pretty basic animations with this, but you not going to win any awards for the work you can create with Kineo. For example, there doesn't appear to be a way to "zoom in" on your artwork for detailed work like in the first screen shot. In fact, I can't even find an "undo" in case you make a mistake and need to remove it.

For very simple animations, this app is probably just fine. I just wonder if the $3.99 price point is a bit too high. No undo, no way to zoom in on artwork. This is basically a toy app and for that reason, it's not really worth the price being asked.
