Men led,
The most robust animation app on iPad
This is currently the best animation app on the market (for my workflow). Not many animation apps offer such a large suite of animation tools while also incorporating great features from painting apps just as Procreate (excellent brush creation, support for tilt controls, etc.). It’s allows for traditional, tweening, and multiple styles of animation (such as pixel art, watercolor, vector, etc.). It even has symbols, which I haven’t come across in any other similar app. Don’t overthink this. This app is worth the money, and you should give it a shot. I hope to see this app grow and receive further development funding. Some nice-to-have features that I would love to see: 1. Left hand interface option 2. Ability to very quickly switch between brush/eraser for faster drawing. I believe this functionality is already available if you can connect a keyboard to your iPad. It would be great to have this similar to Fresco, Proceate, and Callipeg, which allow the user to either tap and hold a button, or to tap anywhere with your off hand in order to swap tools quickly. If any of these features already exist and I’m unaware of them, I will edit this review accordingly. Again, these are nice-to-haves. I have no idea how feasible/difficult it would be to implement these, and the tool is already fantastic without them.

Edit: I found out that some of the requests I mentioned already exist in the app, so they’ve been removed from the review
DMcWayne,
Tons of Potential
I bought this app when I heard it can do basic 2D animation rigging in addition to hand drawn animation. I haven’t been able to learn 2D rigging because Toon Boom Harmony and Adobe Animate are expensive, and OpenToonz is not so comfortable for certain things. So, I bought this app because it could teach me some basic rigging on my own time, without being glued to the computer. It doesn’t have Inverse Kinematics, the ability to reuse assets in other projects, or rigged deformations yet, but I see this as a possible future addition to the animation industry.

The more I’ve used the app, the more stuff I was able to find in it, such as vector tweening for using the curves for 2 similar drawings and creating a morph with it, various little things that can help me with the timing and arcs of the motion graphic animations, and other things that you could find in Premier Pro, such as masking to create animatable shadows.

Seeing that we’re currently on the 1.8 updates, I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the 1.9 and 2.0 updates.
This thing heyday,
GREAT POTENTIAL
the app is awesome, ALMOST everything i could ask for. after using for a week, i decided i really WISH THE APP HAD:

-COPY AND PASTE MANY FRAMES AT ONCE
an option to select multiple frames and copy and paste them into a new spot (copy and pasting one spot at a time is a PAIN).
-MUTING AN IMPORTED VIDEO
the sound of the video only mutes after hiding its visibility. i want to be able to have the video play, but not have sound, or be able to trim and cut off the sound.

-LESS LAG WHEN THE PROJECT GETS BIGGER.
if the project gets big enough it starts to lag, or take much much longer to backup. i don’t know if this is something thats easy to fix, but in my experience with previous apps it wasn't an issue at all.

honestly id really love to switch completely over to this app, theres so many features i really really enjoy! i love the many options for drawing on a frame and all the settings. however, these things are just pretty big issues for me and make it very hard to want to. i might stick with my old one for now.

I WISH IT DIDNT HAVE THESE DEAL BREAKERS FOR ME!!! i’ll definitely stick around though, i have hope things will only get much much better.
id say its worth the money in some ways. i DONT regret purchasing this!
nubbs88,
Please just add this one thing and then this app will be perfect!
Toonsquid is pretty much everything I've ever wanted in an animation app for ipad, however it still has not become my main yet for one reason: there is no way to flip the interface for left handed people. Or maybe there is and I haven't figured it out? Either way, I do mainly frame-by-frame animation and it makes it very annoying to frequently stop drawing, just to use the same hand to flip through the drawings or select a tool in the far left corner. I did try the swipe gesture method, but it's somewhat tricky to use, even with adjustable settings. I know it's ultimately a minor detail, but it seems like such a strange oversight considering you can do it in pretty much every other app, how fully featured Toonsquid is otherwise, and how accessibility should always be paramount when it comes to software design. Until then, I will continue to use RoughAnimator for my keys and breakdowns at least. I really hope to see this feature added soon; otherwise the app is amazing!
Viveela,
One of the most ambitious animation apps
I don't usually make reviews for apps but I am making an exception this time. I have to say I'm very impressed with how advanced this app is! It compares pretty well to Harmony and that's saying a lot for a mobile app. However there are some things that need adjusting. The copy pasting in this is very frustrating. If I copy something it's immediately pasted onto the same layer which I don't want. I want to scrub through my timeline and paste a part somewhere else but I can't. Another is the transformation tool. If I want something turned only a few degrees, like 5, it won't let me and it turns forcefully about 20 or more. I need the subtle adjustment. Maybe it's just a glitch but I couldn't get that to stop happening. There's also a weird thing that happens sometimes after a transformation where it shifts the drawing limit area and there's cut off areas where I can't fill in causing my drawing to be sliced. I can't quite remember what it says, something about a pixel boundary I think. Other than that this app is pretty great and I hope to see improvements!
Playing blind,
Why isn’t this more popular?
I’m a longtime Procreate artist who has used several animation programs including Creature, Spine, Blender, FlipaClip, etc. and this is my first impression:

I have never seen such a fully fleshed animation app for IOS. The user interface is intuitive with many features of a contemporary art app including brush creation, layer grouping, and vector graphics. The user interface for animation is also very user friendly and versatile for anyone who knows what they’re doing, and I could see this being a staple for multiple formats of animation. The reason I say this is not only does the app feature a robust toolset for traditional animation, but the transform parenting hierarchy and pivot editing features can streamline skeletal cutout animations as well.

The ONLY reason this isn’t five stars yet is that this is my first impression, and I’ve yet to try it out in a sizable project. So far, however, I am pleasantly shocked at this software. Developer, please keep up the good work!
raiii s,
Good app, but has a lot of problems
Definitely a good animation app for anyone who wants to lay in their bad to animate. It is also very smooth and has a very good quality. I do have some problems with it though. Randomly ill get a warning that i have low memory. It tells me to reduce the amount of layers, but if i ignore the warnings the app will crash. If i go back to it and resume the warning will be gone, and everything is fine. Theres also another problem i have where the layers in the bottom left corner, there is no option to merge them. Also, with the transform tool, if i transform something with edit pixel on, the part i transformed would get VERY pixelated and distorted. Lastly, this just happened once so far, but the app randomly crashed and when i went back to it, there was a large purple box on the frame that i left off on, and that really made me upset because i had to redraw the whole frame. Pretty disappointing for a $10 app. Overall its good
dragala824,
Great but some issues
First off, this app is one of the best I have tried on IPad. Although I wouldn't say its better then most of the computer softwares I have, it certainly is the best on the Ipad that ive experienced! The interface is easy to navigate and if your have experience with procreate, its easy to get used to how the rest works. However when it comes to the timeline, I notice it constantly glitches and sometimes random frames will become dragged out or combine even if I don’t remember merging them. About the copy paste feature: if your copying from a drawing layer into a new frame is extremely glitchy. If you copy it onto a new frame and dont de-select the area, it moves the paste onto the next frame you click on instead of the one your pasted on. Also, when you use the lasso to grab an area and then click the arrow to move it around it selects the entire frame instead of my selected area. And in general the interface seems very sensitive. But besides those few things I think this app has great potential!

Some things your could add unless they arnt all ready added:

-rigging
-way to add audio from video files not just audio files
-setting to make every frame blank UNLESS you drag out the frame (I had to cut every frame if I wanted it blank and not the previous frame)
-possibly a way to import brushes?

Thank you :)
CandyRibbon,
Finally a good animation app! A few notes.
As an animator who primarily uses Procreate and FlipaClip to produce are in animations, this app is a lifesaver. it has all the basics and more! although this app is amazing, it’s not perfect. And there are a few things that would, in my opinion, make navigation in the app a lot faster and easier. And also make general user-interface a lot better. -The ability to adjust an entire layer’s opacity. -When playing an animation from a specific point on the timeline, returning to that point on the timeline when you pause. -An easier time selecting and moving and then unselecting specific areas. -Being able to copy and paste selected areas. -The ability to turn on brush outline. So I can see how big my brush is on the canvas. Those are all the suggestions I have currently. But again this program is leagues above anything else we have on mobile devices. Thank you.
JDawgtor,
Hands down the most fully featured app yet.
This app is incredible. I haven't seen any other app that goes as far as including Symbols, and frame pickers! I have only seen Adobe Animate do that and not even on the iPad.
The brush engine is great. I was able to recreate my favorite Procreate brush pretty easily. Also Vector brushes which are great for zooming into any drawing without losing quality.

And on top of being excellent for traditional frame by frame animation, there are a whole bunch of motion graphics features as well. Such as Transforms, Keyframes, Easing types for interpolation, and even transform hierarcys for making simple rigs.

If I have one or two requests, it is being able to flip the entire canvas for drawing, although it isn't a huge deal, since you can flip using the transform tool. And I understand if its tricky to implement. And the ability to either have folders for projects or "stacks" like Procreate for sorting projects would also be handy.

But all in all, this app is as good as Adobe Animate and even exceeds it in my opinion, and has the drawing capabilities as Procreate, and it's on the iPad! Which makes it feel like you are creating professional animation all in your portable "sketchbook". And all for just $9.99! Bravo!
