Description

LayR is a massively polyphonic, multi-timbral synthesizer for iOS devices, optimized for modern 64 bit CPUs and capable of delivering up to 256 voices of rich, multi-layered and textured sounds.

LayR's primary sound components are called Performances where a Performance is a set of Instruments and each Instrument is a set of Layers and each Layer is a complete synthesizer. A performance can consist of any number of instruments each with its own MIDI channel and crossfading keyboard span. Each Instrument can consist of any number of Layers to a maximum of 128.

Each Layer has a dual oscillator that can morph with modulation between two shapes and phase states, two rich and warm state variable filters, a wave folder and a mixing section to blend oscillators and filters in any serial/parallel combination.

For modulation (frequency, amplitude and phase) there are two Low Frequency Oscillators ranging from DC to audio frequency switchable to optionally follow keyboard pitch and restart phase when a note is started. Two loopable ADSR envelopes ranging from fractions of a second to over 100 seconds, an amplitude ADSR and a random number generator with a smoothing filter. With stereo delay, reverb and EQ on the output section LayR excels at not only emulating normal analog synth sounds but also at creating massive pads and huge spacy ambient textures with extremely long evolution cycles.

Focused at keyboard players looking for a mobile synth that can be reliably used live on stage LayR is equally at home in the studio. An extensive selection of usable instrument and performance presets are included which can be loaded using MIDI bank select and program change messages in the same manner as hardware synths.

LayR sports almost unparalled and extremely flexible MIDI control. Every parameter in the synth engine can be assigned to any MIDI Control Change number and parameters spread across multiple Layers can be grouped and controlled by a single MIDI cc with assignable range and direction.

There is also an 8 track, 16 step Arpeggio Sequencer which can be used to create all sorts of exciting polyrhythmic looped patterns or even ambient generative music. Each track can have it's own speed, playback mode and length.

On top of all that LayR has a MIDI Controller Mixer that can be used during performance to control the synth engine in real time and can also transmit MIDI cc's from LayR's output port to other destinations.

Full IAA, Audiobus, Audio Unit and Link compatibility means LayR can be used with all hosts and other music apps on iOS and desktop DAWs.

Version history

1.46
2023-06-04
1.46:
This is a maintenance update to ensure compatibility with the most recent compilers.
Also fixes a few issues including …
- Minimum iOS deployment target raised from 9.0 to 12.0 (XCode requirement)
- Implemented some minor future proofing by replacing code that called into recently deprecated system functions .
- Fixed dragging on keyboard MIDI channel selector was not working correctly.
1.45
2021-01-18
- Fix: A workaround for some hosts that don’t provide correct sample rate until very late in initialisation process.
- Fix: A silly “typo” bug where LayR was returning a spurious error from its render block resulting in no audio in some hosts.
1.44
2020-12-18
- minor optimisations.
- implemented support for mouse pointer.
- minor bug fixes

1.43
2020-03-04
Fixes issue on iPhone where text labels in settings view were not visible.
1.42
2020-02-17
- Fixed: Cause of intermittent crash when audio unit is ejected in host.
1.41
2020-02-16
- Fixed: Unused output buffers were not cleared and could cause a buzzing noise.
- Fixed: Could not save preset if name only had one character.
1.4
2020-02-13
v1.4 release notes
- New: A new Multi-out Audio Unit!! (same configuration as IAA version)
- New: Added the 12 Macro controls to AUv3 automation parameter tree.
- Fixed: Crash on iOS 13 when selecting MIDI over Bluetooth for the first time.
- Fixed: Incorrect width for Middle C chooser in Settings panel.
- Fixed keyboard view redrawn too often
- Fixed: Per AU settings (Performance channel & Bend range) not persisting.
- Fixed: some annoying colour clashes with system colour theme on iOS 13.
- CHANGED for AU & IAA: If LayR’s multi out option is set to “FX only”, LayR will now route all audio to the stereo/main output iff all Instruments are routed to main. That is if no instruments are routed to outputs 1-8 then the entire mix is played though the stereo out regardless of the “FX Out” settings.
1.3.3
2019-11-13
Minor update: LayR standalone now supports bluetooth speakers/headphones if iOS has a bluetooth audio destination selected.
1.3.2
2019-04-25
- Fixes a velocity issue when restarting polyphonic voices.

- Addresses a backward compatibility issue with some older Arpeggio Sequencer presets and the recent change to the envelope.
1.3.1
2019-03-15
v1.3.1
- A new "Hold" mode for the Arpeggiator, the old hold mode is now called "Latch".
As long as at least one note is held down on the keyboard or via MIDI any other notes played will be added to the held chord.
When all notes are released the chord continues to play until another chord or note is played.
This makes it possible to play a chord on the keyboard and then change the key or sequence by playing another chord.
All existing presets will load and play as before in Latch mode.

- Added a new parameter editing panel in the editor: The "Dial Strip", see Link & Assign section in manual.
Dial Strip pops up a line of dials, one for the same parameter in every layer.
Use the strip to edit parameters in other layers and set links between parameters.

- Added view insets for devices without home buttons.

- Added an “Invert” button for Unipolar FM in the oscillator. This inverts the polarity of unipolar modulation.

- Added a button to the Editor menu bar to choose between Link Assign/Dial Strip or none.

- Fixed audio unit crash when host requests large buffer sizes.
- Fixed: Fixed character filtering that replaces some unusable characters from preset names before saving.
- Fixed: Voices with long attacks and long releases are no longer (incorrectly) restarted from the wrong level.
- Settings View: Performance MIDI channel selector is now greyed out if option is disabled.
- Some minor DSP engine optimisations.
- Updated Manual with new features in v1.3.1

rexteracious,
LayR as guitar synth
This is the only synth app on iPad that allows separate midi channel input for each string. You can set up 6 identical layers on 6 channels and use the Fishman Triple Play pickup in mono mode. Beautiful rich synth engines with so many possibilities. I limit each channel to the note range of each string as well.
This is the missing piece to the Fishman Triple Play Connect. Just start the triple play app in the background to initialize mono mode and run LayR over it. Tracks beautifully.
FreakofDisco,
Rich, mesmerizing sounds but
I have 75% of the paid synths on the App Store and I can say without doubt that Layr has the richest, most beautiful sounds. The pads are lush, the keys and leads are sharp yet warm. There’s something cinematic and magnetic about the experience, however...

The experience is stunted by how power hungry this instrument can be. I am using an iPad Pro (2018 version), which is second most powerful iPad available today from a specs aspect. I can only host one instance of this app in Cubasis, and even the one instance takes up a whopping 50% power, with no effects or other tracks. In short, it’s not a playable instrument. It’s a feat of technology and beauty, but what’s the point of it all if it can’t be used to create?

I want to support the developers and future updates and sound patches, but first thing first: the app needs to be playable.
Strizbiz,
Great app, imagine if it also had a built in sampler!!!!
This app is great, one of my favs, got it when it first came out when I had an Air 2. I bought an IPad Pro 2020 last year and now I can use it to its full potential and I love it even more. Just a thought....but imagine if it had a built in sampler too with pitch and Time shift....🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯....it would be the one ring to rule them all!!!!
Squidwestro,
Unbelievable so.... good
LayR is so different than other synths. It is truly multi-timbral. Assign as many layers (each layer is a complete synth) to or from as many midi channels as you like. Split a single or multiple controllers as many times as you like with complete control. The depth is strong in this one. And a manual, a really good one!
A different approach to coding makes the unlimited layers possible. Kudos.
Babble on One,
Simply magnificent
Haven’t had much time to play with it yet, but right off, I found it easy to navigate. Kudos to the Third Parties for their sound banks. Very inspiring, and a fair representation of what this synth can do. $25... grumble, grumble... But, no regrets! After years of paying 100 times that for hardware synths, how can we possibly complain? Cheers! ✌🏻😎🎹🌴🌞
Kkdien,
Wow! What a synth!
Just buy this synth. I have tons of iOS synths and as others have said this is probably the best sounding. Developer is still updating it. Sure it’s cpu hungry but you can run on the older engine on older systems and knowing this there are many workarounds. Best $25 I’ve ever spent on a synth.
JWLaconia,
Endless Exploration!
This synth has rich sounds that will blow you away! Being able to build with layers opens up a huge number of opportunities that will allow you to create some incredibly intricate sounds.

Highly recommended!
Ed lai,
Sounds amazing
The interface are beautiful and intuitive. All the features are also well documented too. Definitely one of the best sounding synth I found for iOS devices. I can tell a lot of thoughts put into developing this app.
Eriptron,
As always, my reliable go-to instrument
Layer (and Moog Music’s Model 15 with everything) is what time has shown to be all I need (I have all decent synths on iOS). Add imagination and an aural infinity is heard and begins an unWorldly creation. Thank you!
Oldrumguy,
Simply awesome
If like me you collect lots of synth apps this one stands out as one of the best you will be amazed how complex the sounds can be while programming them is a breeze you just can’t help loving the sounds you can make this one is a keeper
