Version history

2021-05-27
• Updated Ableton Link SDK

This update should fix sync issues or cases where touchscaper is not being recognised by other Link-enabled apps and vice versa.

PLEASE NOTE: The first time you enable Link, you may see a permissions alert asking for confirmation to allow touchscaper to access your network. This is solely to support Link and is basically how Link enables apps to communicate.

1.5.0
2020-06-05
• fixed sequencer "stuttering steps" issue (*)
• fixed issue with MIDI percussion note maps using incorrect notes
• fixed issues when copying sequencer patterns across different parts
• non-active sequencer steps are now dimmed
• sequencer pattern / grid hide and window size logic was confusing - hopefully less so now
• sequencer touch "synth 2" is now called "synth c" - everything else works as before

(*) tech note about sequencer stuttering for those who are interested: this was an intermittent and occasional problem, the cause of which had been difficult to track down. the stuttering would sometimes occur when switching apps while the sequencer was running. For some reason, this got a lot worse with iOS 13 (especially when using IAA), but at least that meant it was a little easier to reproduce the issue and I think I've finally managed to fix it... I'm sure someone will let me know if I haven't :-) Hope you are all keeping safe and well, -Rob

1.4.3
2020-04-29
Sorry for the flurry of updates recently! So... here are a few MIDI-related things that I wanted to get out ASAP:

• fixed silly issue with MIDI destination channels getting confused (sometimes out by 1 - really sorry about this one!)
• added option to align with pitch bend range on target MIDI destination for keyboard ribbon (useful if pitch bend range > 2 semitones)
• added convenience option to transpose MIDI sequencer synth up or down by an octave (handy for hardware or bass-specific patches)
• fixed issue with panic button not always sending notes off to all destinations
• updated user guide

Also just a quick note to say that I totally appreciate that adding MIDI integration has made the app a lot more complex and there is a real need for some decent tutorials - I'll hopefully get to that soon. -Rob
1.4.2
2020-04-28
MIDI related fixes and features:

• MIDI message optimisations / reduced likelihood of stuck notes
• fixed issue with stuck notes when changing MIDI connections

At long last... MIDI out is out!

I know many of you have been waiting *very* patiently for this, and I would like to thank you for that, and I really hope you enjoy this update. Please take a little time to have a look at the MIDI section in the user guide (now accessible from within the app via the gears / settings view).

There will be additional MIDI features (incl. drums out) coming soon! Think of this as "MIDI 1.0" and please let me know of any issues or glitches either via touchscaper.com or the FB page. There are also lots of MIDI demo videos on YT that might give you ideas to try in your own setup.

Hope you're all keeping safe and well, -Rob

• fixed issue with paste function not working for long scene arrangement sections

I'll be posting more preview YT videos soon so please do keep an eye out for those. Just to confirm, MIDI out will be a free update. In the meantime, if you can spare the time to leave a rating and review if you haven't already - that would be really much appreciated. Most importantly, hope you're all keeping safe and well. -Rob

1.3.4
2020-02-11
• Additional "707", "727" and "106" drum, percussion and synth sounds
• Additional "106" based "SMARP" sounds (tap the "SMARP" button to cycle through)
• New "PanUp" touch sequence mode
• New sequencer grid view for live performance / jamming! Tap the grid icon on the main looper view

Please also note the following changes:

The sequence "Mute" part option is no more - simply tap the active sound to mute that part.
The swing "dancing people" button on the main looper has been replaced with a sequence grid view button. Open the tempo view to adjust swing settings.

I hope you like the new grid view - I think it's a lot of fun! I'll try and do some proper tutorials (much requested!), although MIDI features (in progress) are now top priority. The user guide on touchscaper.com should also be up to date by the time you read this - sorry it was getting a little behind, version-wise.

Many thanks for all the support, encouragement and great reviews - much appreciated! -Rob
1.3.3
2020-01-31
• Added optional shuffle / swing percentages (accessible from tempo / metronome view)
• Added option to copy and paste arrangement sections (popular feature request)
• Added option for variable latency / buffer setting (from advanced settings)
• Fix for potential crash when generating chords for a scene

I know a few folks were experiencing issues with clicks and pops on older generation iPads, so hopefully this update will help with that. The additional shuffle settings didn't quite make it into the last update, so hopefully these will be of interest. While the new settings are based on a classic 80's drum machine, I added an additional option for 60% which sounded to me like a sweet spot for mid-tempo dance grooves when 58% isn't quite enough and 62% is a bit too much :-) - please let me know what you think.

Just to confirm MIDI things are *still* in progress - thanks for your patience! Thanks also for all the support so far and please do consider leaving a rating or review if you can spare the time - it really does help and is much appreciated. Also, if you're interested in helping shape new MIDI features, please do get in touch via the website or Facebook page and start a discussion on what you'd like to see and how it could be implemented - I'm just a one-man-band, but that means you get a greater say in how touchscaper develops! All the best, -Rob

Eriptron,
Absolutely Love touchscaper❣️
This completes what I’ve bought from Rob. Will write more later after I’ve digested touchscaper but...!

Hold Mode design is real awkward. Especially if you consider the importance of note placement re: Pan, Volume, Simple/Complex chord and High/Low probability of root notes played. Since one hand is tied up activating the feature AFTER already touch/holding the desires areas of the Radar Screen (and holding still, you’re much left with touch patterns of a single note or a 2 to 5 finger tip arch. Could Hold Mode be made a toggle on/off feature that you can add/subtract notes held and where (along with their respective animations, etc). We really need to be able to interact with Hold Mode dynamically. To be able to nudge the node placements, to ‘fine tune’. To be able to ‘tweak’! 🤓 🙏

I like this sooo much better than Wotja Pro. I’m sure Wotja Pro can do some truly amazing things but it’s more like working with a huge Moog Modular Synth vs Mini Moog Model-D. Touchscaper is the Moog Model-D. Deceptively simple looking.

Decent Manual!

PS-I’ve had touchscaper running for as long as 10 hours straight before it lost it’s mind and all the control animations started running wild! Kind of like ‘the exorcist’ but for synths.
thenoneone,
A lot of variables and so much potential
I have a suggestion for my wish list. I would like an attack vector like one that’s used in an ADSR type function. I really don’t care about having a sustain and delay function. I’m most interested in being able to slow down the Attack so that I can get nice fades or even a backward sound. A variable Release would be second suggestion. By shortening the release you could get more staccato like effects.
I own all your products and they’re all great! This one is literally pushing the envelope for creativity.
Happychocobo,
Amazing
I rarely write reviews but I had to for this one. Easy to use and a lot of flexibility behind the scene. I’m spending more time with it but it already became my go-to app for creation of backing tracks on the fly. The only thing I miss is a light background theme in the UI - I’m one of those unfortunate people with migraines triggered by contrasting colors on dark backgrounds. Amazing tool
Neo60204,
Love at first sight, and sound!
This is the very first App that has taken my breath away. I am actually going to read the manual because I really want to get everything that I can get out of it. The price is beyond fair for what this thing can do. I highly recommend it. PS: I also own all the other app’s the dev. have created.
Robert Reynolds,
Dope app, that keeps getting better
I hate writing reviews but I’ve loved this app from the start. The Developer is seriously talented and incredibly generous for including so many updates free of charge. It’s a very different app today than it was at launch, but all in a good way.
Zorchzorch,
Amazing With One Critical Flaw
Touchscaper is an app I recommend. It generates beautiful sounds and has become a great midi controller. It is one of my go to apps.

The developer takes pride in his work to make this a top quality application. Thank you for making this work of engineering and musical art!
charliexyz123,
Amazing for non-musicians.
This app is very good at allowing non-musicians get some musical flow going and create nice sounding soundscapes. If the Developer could add some orchestral type sounds and features to help us non-musicians create orchestral cinematic soundscapes I think it could be a an amazing tool for low budget podcasters and filmmakers a-alike.
vcvinny,
Simply Awesome
As a lifelong guitar/bass player who is now getting into ambient and atmospheric soundscapes , I think this app is amazing. You don’t have to be a musician to use it but if you are you are in for a treat. 10 out of 10 easily for me.
Yahchanan Abiyah,
Worth the Review
The app is a lot fun and easy to use. The app also sounds great and the developer definitely keeps up with excellent upgrades. I am not a musician but my friends think I am, thanks to Touchscaper!
DJSUN1,
Becoming quite the performer
Thanks for all your work on this one and the addition of midi definitely worth the wait! Kudos!
