Description

Please note: moodunits have been designed as a set of instrument and effect Audio Units. You need to load moodunits into any AUv3 compatible host application running on iPad or iPhone, such as GarageBand or AUM. The moodunits app is not a standalone instrument.

More about moodunits...

Waverley is the principal instrument in the moodunits collection. It’s sample-based, but it isn’t a fully-fledged sampling app that allows you to load and edit your own samples. There are already great apps out there that allow you to do that.

Waverley in moodunits is pre-loaded with 30 factory sounds, that can be tweaked to taste via parameters that will hopefully be familiar to most of you. However, don’t worry if some parameter names look technical or scary - just experiment! You can’t really “break” Waverley or make “bad” sounds with it.

Probably the most popular type of sounds used in iOS music making come from analog synthesisers. Sometimes these sounds are generated by modelling but in Waverley’s case, the factory instruments come from samples of real analog gear. On the one hand, it’s really easy to mathematically generate a perfect saw wave, but sometimes the problem is that it sounds… perfect. Analog synthesisers tend to produce less than perfect waveforms, and it’s generally agreed that’s a big part of what makes them sound “good”.

By using samples, Waverley instruments capture some of the “magic” of the real gear, without having to use CPU-intensive modelling techniques. This means you can run more instances of Waverley in your host as not only is Waverley light on CPU, it’s very efficient with memory too. As well as basic analog sounds such as saw and square wave, Waverley also has sounds with effects already applied using top-end boutique signal processors, so you might be able to find a big pad sound in Waverley that you can use in a project, without having to run a bigger / more demanding instrument going through a bunch of other effects AUs.

But Waverley isn't just about analog gear. You can expand your musical palette via purchases and free downloads from the MU Store as In-App purchases. The MU Store will include an ever expanding range of conventional, as well as "impossible" instruments that will hopefully inspire you during your music creation process.

Another usage scenario for Waverley is if you’re just sketching out an idea, perhaps on a less-capable device like your iPhone while you’re on the move. Maybe the instrument you really want to use only runs on iPad, but there’s a Waverley sound that gets you pretty close and you don’t run the risk of getting distracted with dozens of parameters or a complex UI.

moodunits also comes with some basic effects, allowing you to create a great sounding musical project using just moodunits and your favourite AU host. In keeping with the moodunits design principal, the effects are light on CPU and expose a few essential parameters. They're probably not going to replace your favourite bells and whistles mega reverb or delay, but their simplicity might come as a refreshing change. Currently these effects include a delay, reverb, low-pass filter, 10-band EQ, peak limiter and distortion.

Please note:

The moodunits app is not a standalone instrument, but can be used to access a detailed PDF user guide. Once you run the app, your moodunits are registered on your device and are ready to be used for music projects in your AU host of choice. For instructions on how to use Audio Units, please refer to relevant documentation for your host, e.g. GarageBand or AUM, etc.

Note for advanced users: with the exception of the filter cutoff frequency and resonance in the filter AU, none of the parameters are exposed for automation. Also, please note that the design goals for moodunits is focussed on ease of use, so some advanced users may find the features basic. The screenshots and demo videos online should give you a good idea of what's possible. If in doubt, please ask.

PLEASE READ IF YOU'RE EXPERIENCING ISSUES WITH DOWNLOADS / PURCHASE RESTORES:

I'm sorry that some folks are still having issues with downloads. Sadly, in most cases this is due to circumstances beyond my control and while it does seem to be getting better / less frequent, that's no consolation if you're one of the unlucky few being affected. I know this can be VERY frustrating.

Fortunately, there are things we can do to work around problems and clear errors, but I need your help. I need to know the EXACT error message(s) you receive and which instrument(s) failed to download or restore. I'm afraid simply saying "download failed" or similar, isn't enough for me to go on - I need the EXACT wording. Please send this info via the contact form at moodunits.biz and we'll work through the problems together. In some cases, I might ask for screenshots, so if you get errors, it's worth grabbing those when they occur if you can - that would be great. Thanks, -Rob

If you're still having issues with downloads from the MU Store after this update, please accept my apologies and get in touch via moodunits.biz so we can work out what's going wrong. Many thanks to the folks that have been in touch and helped me reproduce and fix various problems so far. -Rob
1.4.5
2020-11-03
• improvements to MU Store downloads

So... I know downloads have been a real pain for some of you, so please accept my sincere apologies for these issues. Technicalities aside, let's just say it's been surprisingly complicated and challenging getting downloads to work reliably on both iOS 13.x and 14.x. I think this release should improve things significantly, but sadly it's always possible your experience could be different. With that in mind...

Please can I ask that if you do experience problems and get error messages and you're willing to help me try and fix the problem(s), please make a note of the *exact* message - this really helps me zone-in on specific issues. Even better, take a screenshot, and get in touch via moodunits.biz and we'll take it from there. Knowing which version of iOS you're running is also very useful. In some cases a power cycle of your device will help "clear" App Store download errors and this seems to work better bet than a clean install of the app.

Obviously, I hope your downloads go smoothly here on in with this update, but if for some reason they don't, please do consider the request above. It really does make a big difference and helps a lot, and as a little thank you, anyone who does help out won't go unrewarded ;-) -Rob
1.4.4
2020-10-31
New guitar-based instruments for MU Waverley:

• FUZZGUITAR - Warm and fuzzy guitar tones and textures
• BASICBASS - Nothing fancy, just basic bass guitar sounds

Available to purchase and download from the MU Store accessible from the main moodunits app.

Hope you're enjoying moodunits and like the new instruments. There should be a "Halloween special" demo of the new sounds on YouTube by the time you read this :-)

Best regards, -Rob

cmruko,
Wow. Simple, Powerful, Sounds Amazing
Updated - So basically you get 9 AUv3 apps (as of now, new are added often) packed inside this app. Waverly AU is the single instrument, but it sounds so rich, and has several great yet inexpensive IAP. That’s because all sounds are carefully sampled from the real analog sources. The initial 50+ Presets, (more with IAP) are some common waveforms, ie. Saw, etc. and some more complex sounds as well. It sounds so full and rich, it’s great. Then there are 8 AU effects as of now, reverb, delay, filter, EQ, distortion, limiter, etc... The effects are great for shaping the AU Waverly unit into something more. It is polyphonic except for the Bass presets. I was on the fence, do I really need this, type thing, but the interface is super clean, easy to use, and understand. It sounds amazing, and you get a lot for your buck. The sounds are great for making some classic synth sounds, pads, leads, bass, etc. Some are heavily processed for some amazing atmospheres. Then some Amazing IAP Guitar, piano, strings, etc... You could build a multitimbral synth in AUM using a couple Waverly instances. Just saying. I heard the sound of the app on The Sound Test Room video, and decided for $5 (initial price) I’ll try it. I’m so glad I did. I’m definitely using these sounds in my actual songs not just for sketching ideas, or place holding. Real Quality here. All 9 included AUv3’s are great. App is also low on CPU/DSP. Amazing app with great sounds. Get it.
Codowlsky Polopumus,
Top Notch
Imagine my surprise and delight to see a new app from this Dev last night! Imagine my glee when I saw the price tag!

Now imagine you.... sitting at home all sad because you don’t have this beautiful gem. Imagine your melancholy. Now I want you to imagine you’re no longer such a cheapass for a moment. Imagine pulling out your wallet. Imagine buying this beautiful app. Now see your melancholy fade. You no longer have to imagine because it’s real, you own it. You can play with it and be happy, right now.

Great app. Great dev. 5 hefty stars.
Rawlivic,
Very Impressed
First of all, this is one of those apps that gives you multiple effects and a synth within in one. I love the waverley instruments, so many great sounds, very easy to play with the effects and make them your own. I love that I can use the effects anywhere. I wasn’t so sure if I would get used to the different layout than most auv3s, but I absolutely love it. They just added two new effects now too, we are at 7 apps practically for the price of one. Great dev, another great app. Don’t hesitate.
Mehmui,
It’s great. It’s simple. It’s diverse.
I usually write reviews about products i appreciate and find to be awesome bemut somehow slightly lacking. Moodunits however is pretty spot on. My only gripes are that it wasn’t clear presale exactly what it was ( that being super easy to edit auv3 synth packs and some added solid auv3 fx compressor, delay, reverb, etc) and other than that the graphics? could use a bit of polish because the sound is super future but the logo is a bit kinkos?🥰
Eriptron,
MU Store Error!
The current update fixed my IAP/Download issue! Great job Rob!
----
I downloaded/updated MU with the latest update. At first no change. Same thing, so I deleted and re-installed MU. Everything downloaded ok except for the same three instruments; Factory, Stringz and MoBass. For those three I still get the 'MU Store Error: Download could not be started. If this problem persists please re-launch the app or restart your device.'

----
Unable to download any purchased instrument. Only see MU Store Error. Tried rebooting device. Tried re-installing MU. Same thing. Restore purchases seem to work just not any of the instruments. Obviously, my internet is fine. Please fix it!
AFTR | PARTY,
Best of the Best
This a random thank you because I never dreamed we’d have a synth that’s just as CPU friendly as it is sound quality. And I’ve literally bought tried all the other synths over the last 8 years, so this app is truly the standard. Idk how you made this app happen engineer wise but other app developers need to follow your lead for the most part.
Alex Zvook,
Great app and customer support!
This app, as many here have already said, it’s amazing and a must for anyone into textural ambient stuff, also, the customer support from Rob himself is super quick as I had an issue with the app store in app purchases and it was quickly solved by Rob in less than 10 minutes from the time I initially contacted him!
Robmarl,
Simple
A great example of simplicity being a best friend in music creation
No matter how many musical tools you have available it’s always important to find your own voice and sounds
Great developer as always Rob!
paulcpaulc,
Amazing
Great sounding, simple, unique well thought out apps. Well worth the 5 bucks. Looking forward to more sounds and updates. Top notch, caring developer!
reasOne Won,
Great sounds and parameters
Such a great instrument to load up and start jamming on! The sounds are very useable and fit into all my mixes very well. Love the in app purchases as well.
