Description

"Part instrument, part interactive ambience, part subtly-changing New Age album, moodscaper's autoplay button is a wonderful introduction to its charms. With a single touch, it generates a musical artwork that's different every time."

"A worthy and lush-sounding musical companion."

Sound On Sound Magazine - Aug 2016

Moodscaper is a generative music app and a great personal companion for studying, providing non-intrusive headphone music at work, relaxing, meditating and even sleeping. Just launch the app, tap automatic play, and moodscaper will produce melodic, atmospheric and evocative ambient music in a “light”, “dark”, “space”, "happy" or “sad” mood.

Moodscaper is also an easy to use instrument for creating epic-sounding pads and effects as part of a larger iPad-based music-making setup. You can even create your own custom instrument by loading your own samples, and taking advantage of moodscaper's generative engine.

Main features:

· Unique generative atmospheric sample-based instrument
· Simple user interface
· Sleep timer
· Five scale-based moods
· Variable dynamics - from mellow and sparse to full-on drama!
· Four loopers with optional sync
· Provides tasteful auto-accompaniment to your playing in realtime or in loops
· Hints displayed on keys that should sound good with root notes or chords
· Samples are randomly stacked for a bigger sound with more variation

· Effects tweaks can be recorded in loopers
· Additional 20 key instrument for each mood

Version history

2.0.4
2018-11-15
IAA stability improvements.
2.0.3
2017-11-28
Random stuff!

Added more playback randomisation - this should be noticeable on longer evolving chord and effect sounds. You may even hear some things you haven’t heard before! Hope you like this little tweak.

*** Special note if you create and import your own sounds ***

Please note that by default, sounds will not play from the beginning of the file - the starting point is randomised. If you want certain sounds to always play from the beginning, or “frame zero” you need to include a special tag in the filename “pff0” (play from frame zero). For example: “01-one-small-step-pff0.caf”.
2.0.2
2017-10-15
Fixed issue relating to screen orientation changes not being handled properly.
2.0.1
2017-05-28
Added random automation to dynamics and sympathetic controls during auto-play for some extra subtle variation.
2.0.0
2017-01-24
Fixes:

When sympathetic control is at the minimum setting, the additional keypad is *not* updated when bass or chord root note is changed.

Additional custom mood sounds are added to the in-built ones - previously they replaced them.

Changes:

Reverb and delay buttons now share the same position in the UI. Tapping the button toggles between delay and reverb. Please note that the delay and reverb are still both active and independent. This is purely a UI layout change.

Due to user feedback, one of the loopers we lost in the previous update is back. I still don’t think this is an ideal solution, but hopefully it’s a little step in the right direction while I figure out how to handle multiple loopers more elegantly.

Thanks for all the feedback, and sorry about the reduction in loopers! Please note there is an updated quick-start guide at moodscaper.com that will hopefully get you going with the new features. And finally... really sorry this v2.0.0 update isn't a bit more exciting! I basically ran out of 1.9.x numbers. Hopefully some more interesting updates coming before too long.
1.9.9
2017-01-19
* Timer added - set the desired time using the slider and moodscaper will stop playing when the timer expires.
* Sympathetic keys control - varies the probability (from never to always) of the additional keypad playing in sympathy with the main one. If you’ve mostly been using the app in auto-play mode then you should hear some (hopefully) pleasing new sounds!
* Minor tweaks to generative and audio engines.

As with the other effects type controls, the slider beneath the highlighted effect changes its value.

Please note that this now means the total number of loopers available is reduced from 5 to 3. I’d really like to know if that’s a big deal for anyone, so please do let me know via the moodscaper.com contact form if it is, and I’ll try and work out a solution for you in a future release. In the meantime, hope you can get by with 3 loopers, and don’t forget that you can overdub on top of existing loop recordings.

Hope you like the new features and sorry there haven’t been any updates in a while - sometimes life gets busy! :-)

-Rob
1.9.8
2016-10-17
* New “happy” mood based on major pentatonic scale :-)
* Slider effect changes - audio response now smoother / less stuttering
* Finally tracked down autoplay middle voice dissonant note issue - yay!
* Small fixes to control graphics on iPad Pro
* Optimised some old sub-optimal optimisations
1.9.7
2016-10-10
· Fix for "questionable notes" auto-accompaniment / play bug introduced in v1.9.6 - sorry about that!
· Key pad optimisation
1.9.6
2016-10-07
Hello - just a little update mostly relating to the generative side of moodscaper:

· Auto-play loops now include dynamic variations so different loops are selected if dynamics change during auto-play.
· Voice auto-accompaniment now sub-divides note lengths from loop root note events when complexity > medium.
· Note hints vary for complexity > medium.
· Realtime auto-accompaniment for bass and chord playing - just start playing, and moodscaper will play notes in-between yours!
· Minor tweaks and performance improvements.

If you'd like to share your thoughts on moodscaper, please do consider taking the time to leave a review in the App Store - it really does help people decide if they might enjoy the app as I hope you do, and it is very much appreciated - thanks!
1.9.5
2016-09-29
Fixes:

Improved IAA stability on iOS 10
Headphones issue on iPhone / iOS 10

Tweaks:

Auto-loop population respects dynamic level (also during auto-play)
Stopping master looper resets voice auto-accompaniment

Under the hood:

iOS 10 compatibility
Swift codebase fully migrated to v3.0
1.9.4
2016-09-22
· Effects and additional keypad included in iPhone (previously iPad only)
· Volume slider also controls "dynamics" for more dramatic or mellower moodscapes!
· Minor "under the hood" enhancements and fixes

For more info, please refer to the manual at moodscaper.com
1.9.3
2016-08-01
Improved Inter-App Audio (IAA) stability.
1.9.2
2016-07-26
Quick fix for sluggish instrument keypad response.
1.9.1
2016-07-18
This is an interim release before v2.0. It basically contains a few things that were already implemented, but didn't quite make it into v1.9 because they were un-tested:

· Voices are now randomly "stacked" for more variation and a bigger, more dramatic sound!
· Key "hints" are displayed on notes that should sound good when the root note changes
· Small tweaks to auto-play

I've also created a downloadable expanded demo instrument called "massive mellow modular" to showcase the new voice stacking feature. The demo contains 300 sounds and is available as a free download on moodscaper.com. Instructions for loading it into the app (via iTunes) are in the manual which also can be found on the website, along with audio and video demos.

Thanks for all the support so far - much appreciated! For anyone still waiting for their "must have" feature, please keep in mind that priorities and new features are 80-90% user-driven and I'm just one guy working through a list of things in user-suggested priority order. Subject to change, the priority of the top 5 feature requests currently looks something like this: support for... MIDI out, Link, AudioUnit, AudioShare, AudioBus. Sorry if you're special thing isn't higher in the list - I hope to get to it eventually.
1.9
2016-07-05
· Load your own samples to create entirely new custom instruments (iPad *and* iPhone)
· A few small "under the hood" improvements

Please note that the user-sample naming convention has changed slightly since v1.8 so please do refer to the manual.
Demo sample sets will be available at moodscaper.com

Coming up next, you asked for it - MIDI out in v2.0.

• Effects on / off status saved between sessions
1.4
2016-05-16
Just a few little things in this update...

• Auto-play improvements - more relaxing (hopefully)
• Lower CPU and memory usage
• Added a few spacey chords to light and dark moods
• Touch, slide-away and release auto-play key to toggle delay and reverb effects (*)

(*) This was a requested feature, mostly for recording purposes, or for playing over speakers in spaces with natural reverberation.

Still working on AU support... Sorry that didn't make it into this version.

Interesting things…

• Auto-play has been totally re-designed based around melodic themes and chord variations
• Loop recorders increased to three! Can be synchronized with each other, or free-running
• Loops can be auto-populated with melodic parts based on existing bass or chord loop
• Bass or chord loops can be toggled between harmonic variations
• Support for landscape screen orientation - better layout for performance with other apps

Less interesting things…

• Reduced app / install size
• Looper button arrow animation
• Increased voice polyphony
• Voice balance and effects levels adjusted
• Double-tap a loop recorder for “all notes off”
• Increased audio and UI update refresh rate
• A few other small UI tweaks

Cshriner,
Lovely instrument. Review update
Heard back from the dev regarding AudioShare and it reminded me to update my review. I went from 4 stars to 5 stars even though AudioShare is not supported. Using iTunes to transfer my own sounds to Moodscaper is quite simple- albeit a bit clumsy. Still, Moodscaper is a fantastic ambient sound design and performance instrument. Moodscaper also helps me to get new perspectives and ideas about sounds and music I’m working on because I can just load the sounds in and explore. Like playing with audio legos :-)

Very well designed instrument. Lots of potential, particularly with the ability to load my own sounds. And that’s where the major flaw comes in. The inability to share/transfer sounds between apps is a deal breaker for me.
At the very least, the Moodscaper should be compatible with AudioShare.

When I’m using my iPad to do sound design, I have to transfer the completed sound(s) to iTunes on my Mac and then transfer them back to the iPad in order to get the sounds into Moodscaper.

Please make Moodscaper compatible with AudioShare. All of the apps I use for synthesis, sound design and processing are compatible with AudioShare and allow me to quickly transfer my files without using an external machine.

Ambient Blissfulness
I’ve had this app for quite some time now, a couple of years at least, and I never tire of it. So many times I have run it in the background while working or reading or simply relaxing. As an iOS musician I have also incorporated it into my music making with wonderful results. It is IAA compatible and works with any of the standard iOS DAWs. I use it in Cubasis. Initially, the layout seems rather cryptic but it doesn’t take long to know your way around the user interface. This app is one of those gems I’m very glad I found!
Deltacaster,
First in this scaper series, they’re all great
Great as a generative relaxation too, or an inspiring musical instrument anyone can play. Use it alone or with other apps via any inter app audio compatible app. I highly recommend all of the scaper series apps this developer offers. A lot of fun for those who love music.
Senteag,
One of the most enjoyable instruments
This is so much fun, and so forgiving to the player. Everything sounds good on it, but you can truly compose, too.
sealars,
Awesome newness
If you are looking to make some mellow type of music this is hands down the best app for you to start on
mrtatnall,
Thanks moodscaper
Love iit long time
Gitarzz,
Just Beautiful
This quickly became one of my favorite apps upon its release and has stayed one of my most opened apps. It's so simple to use that even a non musician can create beautiful musical motion with it but musicians will be able to figure out the creative tension that isn't so obvious. The best part of this app is, without question, the developer. Look at how many updates this app has had since it entered the App Store. This dev just keeps giving and building. On top of that, he's asking what the users want on the Moodscaper Facebook page. MIDI is in the works. You can add new sounds. There's a bunch on the app website. You can add them through iTunes file sharing. Do you want to add sounds via Google Drive, DropBox or AudioShare? Ask the dev! He's listening!
So, overall, this is a great sounding app that's accessible to anyone and everyone.
ios1899,
Audioshare or files support please
Importing sounds from audioshare or fils would be nice
Kammermusik,
Fantastic!!
Great app!! I use the auto-play feature most often but the interactive keypads are fun too. The free sound samples available on the product website are very good. Highly recommended. If you like ambient music this is a must buy.
BAFC,
WONDERFUL!!!
The app is getting better all the time and Rob is always asking users about different features to add as well as being responsive with each of his incredible updates... Simply put, just get the app!
