Description

The New City Catechism is a modern-day resource aimed at helping children and adults alike learn the core doctrines of the Christian faith via 52 questions and answers. The New City Catechism mobile app makes it easy to take all of the questions and answers with you wherever you go—for free!

The app pairs each question and answer with a Scripture reading from the ESV, a short prayer, and a devotional commentary written by contemporary pastors, including John Piper, Timothy Keller, Kevin DeYoung, and others.

The app also includes a short version of each answer and kid-friendly songs designed to help children memorize the entire catechism.

Features:

• 52 catechism questions and answers related to God, humanity, sin, salvation, and more
• Devotional commentary on every question and answer written by respected pastors and church leaders
• Short prayers to accompany each question and answer
• A children's mode featuring short versions of each answer and quick access to kid-friendly songs designed to aid memorization
• Related Bible passages drawn from the ESV

The New City Catechism is a joint project of the Gospel Coalition and Crossway.

Joyworld,
Love this app! A few bugs though.
Love this app and all the content it provides! It seems like there are some issues with the media player. I’ve discovered that I cannot access the media player for single questions from the bottom bar unless I click on the “prayer” icon first, then click the bottom x to exit, then click the media icon to bring up the media player for the single song. Also, sometimes when playing a song from the All Songs list, I have to click to proceed to the next song instead of it automatically playing the next song in the list. I think it used to proceed automatically, but would skip from the current song I played, to the latest song on the list that I had ever played. Maybe that bug is fixed but the fix was to eliminate auto play all together 😔. The auto play would be a nice feature to add. Thanks for all the hard work! 💪🏼
sh.Cornish,
Excecution of content needs work
This app is great for having all content accessable in one spot. However, it will only let me play each song only once. There is no way to start over unless I completely exit the app and get back in. If I pull up the full song list, there is no way to go back to the normal screen unless I shut down the app and get back in. It's a lot of unnecessary steps. Kids need repetition to learn, so being able to repeat without unnecessary steps would be nice.
Dafhhkigb,
Great as Devotional
The way this catechism systemizes the core doctrines and beliefs of the Gospel and the way that it also protects against heresies by being absolutely grounded in scripture is absolutely astounding. Aesthetically, it’s rather lovely bc of the color coded sections and the little animations that accompany every question is pleasing to the eye. Practically, it’s easy to use and every time you open the app after refreshing/restarting it, it opens at the last question you left off at, which is rather awesome considering that if it didn’t, you’d have to scroll and try to remember where you last left off. Definitely a huge blessing to the modern day church and I hope it’ll be in use for quite some time
TK42DAN,
Love it, with one little annoyance
A solid catechism that meets a need and fulfills a role. The introduction does a good job explaining how that plays out.

My only frustration—and it’s nitpicking—is that I can’t figure out how to get to the Home Screen without closing and restarting the app; I don’t believe it’s possible. Do I need to go to the Home Screen? Not really. Can I navigate to all relevant places without doing so? Yup. But my brain desperately wants to be able to hit a “Home” button and get back to the splash screen. 🤷🏻‍♂️😂
Eng.I.Nrd,
Prefer the Kindle Fire version
This version has too much going on - too busy. The Kindle Fire version has everything on 1 page for the days devotional. It would be nice to have that layout as an option. Otherwise great idea. It is good for kids to do a self devotional, but I would never recommend this version for kids over the Kindle Fire version. The songs are horrible, but that is to be expected.

For adults, it would be nice to have reference to the other Catechisms’ questions each question was based on and their bible verses. It would enhance the adult study with a good side by side.
SpeedyGoat,
Update is lightyears ahead of old app
Three things would bring this up to five stars for me: 1. Remember the question I’m on from the previous session. Why do I have to click or scroll to get back to the question I’m on every. single. time. I. open. the. app. 2. Finish the songs for the kids version. 3. Bring back the ability to see the kids and adults answers simultaneously (the kids answers were in a different colored font).

Overall this is a great app!
Mr Toner,
Kid-friendly, but also for adults
Just finished 52 weeks of this app with my kids. They were very engaged and even my 5yo had little trouble learning most of the songs that accompanied the lessons.

My only complaint is that the app has some minor player and navigation issues. Would heartily recommend, though, to anyone who wants to hide the Word of God in their heart.
Mulch__,
Great app!
This is a great app to walk through the catechism. Super intuitive to use and very modern/beautiful design.

Would LOVE if there was a way to play all the songs in Children mode automatically one after the other so my family could sing through the catechism while in the car, etc. Having music in the adult version would be awesome too - great method to help things really stick!
accounting12,
Great app to teach theology to kids
Great tool to teach good basic theology to your kids. I use the app with my 4 and 2 year old and the 4 year old has memorized about the first 20 questions. I can see how his knowledge from the questions is already affecting the way he thinks about life. The songs are great too, they help a lot with the memorization of the Q and As and make it fun for the kids. Highly recommended.
God's Ranch Hand,
We love this app!
We just found this app and have added it to our morning routine. My boys aged 9 & 11 love the songs. We sing along and even take different parts which they really enjoy - todays quote: “This is Fun!!” And I hear them singing the songs during the day. Even catch myself singing the songs during the day. What a wonderful way to learn the New City Catechism.
