サミ神,
Cute app that rewards habitual teeth brushing
4 stars because I do like the app, but I would appreciate if there was offline capability as well as new pokemon to be added eventually. It is sad to hear that there are no plans for future updates to add pokemon because I think it would be really nice to be able to catch more than just the original 151. As many others have experienced, the first couple days I used this app I also experienced raw, bloody gums but after I have used the app more regularly that has no longer been the case for me. I think there is the level of excitement to suddenly following this app that can lead to that but also just in general it is possible that prior to following the app theirs and my own oral hygiene had not been the best and so suddenly properly getting all the parts of the mouth can lead to bloody gums so Ive also heard. In short, I don’t think you should give this app up simply because of bloody gums the first couple times you follow along with the app, give it some time. If you then continue bleeding well after the first few times, then maybe this might not be the best for you.
minecraftgirl757,
Great way to get kids to brush their teeth!
So, after seeing this in this in Pokémon Presents, it was obvious some people thought it was a joke, and I did too for minute before seeing it on the App Store. I decided to try it out, even thought it’s aimed for kids that are, like, ten years younger than I am xD
After grabbing my toothbrush and using the app for a bit, I quite enjoyed it. The graphics were cute (I do wish it was closer to the original art but I can’t really complain cause it’s pretty cute) and the menus were easy to navigate. I like the objective of catching Pokémon and unlocking stickers and caps once yinish brushing, although I do wish the brushing guide was more clear. It’s a bit hard to understand where it wants you to brush sometimes, like when it asks you to brush the inside of your teeth. I saw someone else say this, but it would be nice if it was a 3D model, although I think the current 2D is manageable. It would be nice if you could choose what type of toothbrush you have (manual or electric) since I did notice that it would say that I’m going too slow while I used my electric toothbrush. Other than that, this game is great and I’m still wondering how the developers managed to make this enjoyable even for older people than it was targeted for l me! I can see how this can help younger kids with their brushing habits and I think this is a great app.

although i am still a bit confused on why we’re using master balls on weedles and rattatas-
tinsorihime,
Beautiful app
As someone who works in the UX/UI field, it is so refreshing to see an app that sees a purpose and function for every aspect of what it does FOR MY KIDS! They could have easily gone the “cheap and easy” route but they really looked at every little detail and gave it purpose. (Ex simply tapping on your Pokémon will have it animate a cute little jump - not only that but if you tap it enough times, you’re rewarded with a new hat!) My kids (4 & 7) are constantly feeling rewarded and validated for doing a good job (or encouraged to try better next time if they don’t catch the Pokémon at the end). They really understand kids and how much incentive-based rewards are valuable: There are badge rewards, sticker rewards, hat rewards, decorating your photo fun, all with a sleek and intuitive design! And the Pokémon are SO cute in a chibi kind of way. I could go on and on about the positives but one thing we were thinking would be nice is seeing the date when you caught a Pokémon somewhere. It’s nice to look back on when you accomplished something. I highly recommend this app - it may make brushing your teeth take a tiny bit longer but if it’s to enjoy the rewards of your accomplishments, I don’t mind the extra time to decorate your pic :)
Yasminemon,
This app has potential, if there were some modifications.
I have been a Pokémon fan for several years now, but after trying this app, its pretty lousy in my speculation. It has a dense time recognizing if you have a toothbrush or not, and it keeps telling you to brush your teeth hastily. my gums started bleeding once because it kept telling me to brush nimbly. I had to fake brush my teeth sometimes in order to catch the Pokémon and to eliminate the purple goop. And the app needs to show you to brush in circular gestures. it’s not good to brush from side to side, but rather up and down. Clearly it does not show that you need to brush in circular gestures and up and down. As a person said in a review, brushing from side to side will build tarter on your gum lines, and will ruin the enamel on your teeth. There should also be an option so you can catch a Pokémon every time. There are probably kids out there having a meltdown because they unsuccessfully captured a Pokémon that they were supposed to get as an award for brushing their choppers. Though the stickers you get are a fun addition, and the fact you have a little sidekick Pokémon is cute as well! I also like the neat hats that you can wear while brushing your teeth, but overall it can use some modifications. I wouldn’t recommend this app, as it harms your gums and has poor camera recognition. There are better brushing apps out there that your child can adore!
NighthunterM,
Really good
So i don’t need this to brush my teeth i learned that when i was three, but since my sister is at a good age demographic for it i decided to download it. I watched her play it for a day and then made an account for me, and oh jeez i love this game. It’s not like you need it to brush ur teeth, but oh god its just so satisfying when you get rewarded for something you were supposed to do anyway. And surprisingly it runs really smoothly, i almost had no problem with the camera and the pictures actually come out good. But now it’s time for the thing i wrote the review for, the art style. Oh my god i want this in an actual pokemon game. This style makes the pokemon look as dirpy as can be but it works soooooo well. Literally the only criticism i have for this game is... 1 to make there a 100% catch rate because it is marketed towards little kids and they may feel sad if they don't catch something, 2 make it so pokemon can evolve and have shinies just cause that would be sooooo cool, and 3 they should make it to where other pokemon from ur Pokédex can fight the bacteria too because i just want my dirpy arbok to take down some bacteria while i brush my gums out trying to get a mewtwo. Other than that this is a great game for all ages and i fully recommend.
Young Paleontologist,
Pokémon Smile deserves more love!!
This app is a GODSEND! I’m an 18 year old with various sensory issues, and long lasting depressive episodes have meant that dental care hasn’t always been a priority in my life. Pokémon smile has made me the most consistent tooth-brushed I’ve been in years!

As much as this game is for kids, I’ve also seen a great appreciation from the neurodivergent community! Pokémon is something I think a lot of us latch onto, and when self care is hard, Pokémon smile makes it fun! I think this game is super under appreciated and undervalued.

That being said, I’m saddened to hear there aren’t any planned major updates! I’d love to see more of my favorite Pokémon (especially torterra) and I wish the camera section had the option to take and edit photos when I’m not brushing. The hats and stickers are so cute, but I wanna feel cute in the picture too! I know the game got a lot of backlash because of fans who were upset they weren’t getting Diamond/Pearl remakes or whatever, but honestly, this game makes a lot of people really happy, and helps so many people improve their self care. I can’t wait to hopefully see more from this app and maybe one day, Pokémon sleep!
Just A Cat Lover🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈,
Great Concept, Poor Execution
I, as a teen, am probably too old for this type of app. But I figured, “I gotta brush my teeth, may as well catch Pokémon while I’m at it”
The idea is amazing! Encourage little kids to brush by catching Pokémon! However, the way this app works is less than satisfactory. I was a bit concerned when I saw that when you tap the screen to catch the Pokémon, it wasn’t a 100% catch rate. I would recommend changing this to an option in game, as some children don’t respond well to failure. If little Timmy doesn’t catch Pikachu, there might be tears and he may not want to play the game again. Also, the BRUSH FASTER mechanic doesn’t work very well. It’s caused my gums to bleed every time I use the app. Everyone brushes at their own pace. I’m a slow brusher, I like to take my time and make sure my teeth are actually clean. Sometimes I make it so the app can’t see me, so I can ACTUALLY brush my teeth. Also, the starter Pokémon you get is pretty useless. Eevee is cute, but she does nothing to help out. I was brushing really well and super fast like the app was telling me to, and none of the purple stuff was going away. Eevee was just... there. If y’all can fix the problems of the app, I will continue using it, but for now, me and my bloody mouth will pass.
jerardb150,
Just a few recommendations
In my opinion, it’s a pretty good game. It makes brushing way more fun and even though it’s for kids a little bit younger than me, it’s still fun. But it’s not really a ‘good’ game, so I have 2 and only 2 things that might make the game better. 1. Have a break between brushing. Whenever I use it, it tells me to keep brushing until the timer goes off. This makes my mouth drip with toothpaste stuff in my mouth. So maybe just put some breaks here and there. 2. (It’s okay if you don’t add this) Maybe have like an online match where you battle with other people’s Pokémon. So picture this, you get chosen for a match. You pick your Pokémon and get ready. When it says go, you start brushing, the better you brush, the more damage you bring. The match ends when a Pokémon faints. I don’t know what should you get as a prize for beating it (maybe a hat or something) but it’s a pretty good idea. If you put this in the app, I’ll be very happy and glad that you got this message.
Zoethecat123,
Fantastic app for anyone!!!
I have been using Pokémon Smile for just over a month and I am genuinely surprised at how much I enjoy it! I suppose I should clarify that I am a teenage girl and thus not the intended audience, but I really do think this app is for everyone. It’s cute, fun, and extremely well made. It’s simplistic but not infantilizing and I have yet to run into any bugs.
I mainly tried this out so I would know if it was good to recommend to others. I have many neurodivergent friends and friends who have struggled with mental illness, and I have also managed depression for several years myself. I really wish I had this app when I was recovering, because brushing can be hard for anyone, no matter how old you are! Even though I was already in the habit of brushing every day, since downloading I feel like I’ve started doing a better job and I genuinely have fun doing it. I don’t normally write reviews but this is such a genuinely helpful app for ANYONE who wants a little help brushing or just wants to collect cute pokémon, no matter how old you are :)
tamagotchi egg,
Cute game, passable play, little future
This is the cutest art I’ve ever seen, which is the only thing keeping it on my phone. It’s really only useful on the 3 minute setting, which is fine because it ensures I get a good thorough brushing. However, I perfectly clean a Pokémon maybe half of the time. To be fair, I have a black toothbrush. Odd though, that on a night with my power out and candle lit lighting, I was able to get a perfect clean, but with nice lighting the app struggles to see that I’m brushing fast enough or fails to see my toothbrush altogether. As an adult it’s quite frustrating, but it’s about time for a new toothbrush so perhaps another color will work better. I love the concept of this app, and the stickers and hats are an excellent add on. However, with no plans to add future Pokémon or additional stickers or hats, the game may last me a few months if I remember to play every day, but there’s nothing past that. That isn’t surprising because it’s a completely free game, but I hope there’s enough people that request more that additional content will be added. Despite the technical errors, I really love this app. It makes brushing fun and exciting. :)
