Description

Dear Irregulars,

Immerse yourselves a little deeper in the investigations of Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective with this companion app. It contains the audio tracks of each case introduction of The Thames Murders & Other Cases and Jack the Ripper & West End Adventures. No spoilers included!

Get comfortable.

Download the Consulting Detective game and launch the app. Select the case you wish to play and listen to its introduction. Memorize or note the information before you start investigating.

The rules remain unchanged: After you have listened to the introduction and found the lead you wish to follow, read out loud its entry. After your turn is over, pass the booklet to the Irregular on your left, as usual.

Enjoy!

gheyy bar reviewer,
App just doesn’t work anymore
Only the audio for the first case’s introduction is available. Reading the reviews, it appears the app worked when it was first released but an updated iOS must have broken it and the developers don’t know how or aren’t interested in fixing it.

The game itself is great and is highly recommended. Also, the people saying “no in-game investigation audio is available” are complaining about nothing. The rule book was very clear that the app was for listening to the introductions. If you want the whole game in the app, be prepared to pay even more than the price of the board game (because that’s what the app would be - the entire game, with the added complexity of organizing the leads digitally rather than printing them one after the other).
5toneMan,
Just needs a little work
Shrink the sound files. This guy is just a noob app developer and didn’t ask anyone for help. You only need 128 or 192 size audio at most for an app. These massive sound files don’t leave room for anything else. Find a guy on Craigslist with a baritone voice and pay him chump change for a few hours of his time and voice the whole game out. Then re-release the app with an option pay for the additional content for $1-$2. The game is great but everyone’s criticisms of the app are valid and could be addressed in one slow weekend.
Lo Atonio,
App doesn’t work
We purchased the Thames Murders set at our local board game store and were happy to see it came with an app. We used the app to read aloud the opening remarks of the first case, which was nice. However, when doing the second and third case we learned that the app only plays the audio for the first case no matter which case you swipe it to! We even tried letting the audio play out when on the screen for case two to see if it might move onto the audio for the next case but that didn’t work either. Might as well not even have the app available if it doesn’t work at all.
Grant 255340,
Fundamentally flawed - audio for first case only
How is it possible that this app has been out for years and they still haven’t fixed such an obvious and fundamental flaw? You can only listen to the first case. No matter what case you select, it always plays the audio of case one. I read this in other reviews and thought “no, surely they must have fixed something so obvious. Or maybe that reviewer just used the app wrong.” But no. It’s truly broken and remains so to this day. What a huge disappointment.
grahamward7,
Didn’t improve the game experience
For a free companion app, it’s not terrible, but it reads you only the initial text (nothing during actual gameplay). I would have found that useful, except that the reader sounds like an informational voice over. If the narration had any character or emotion—even a little musical underscoring—it would serve a purpose. As it is, we prefer to read the text ourselves.

I suppose someone who struggles with reading might appreciate the chance to listen instead. But if no one in your group is comfortable reading, this game is probably not for you anyway. I deleted the app right away.
pattappat,
Turn mute switch off
A nice to have but totally optional addition to the board game. Note - you must turn your mute switch off to hear audio. Other than that issue, the app works great and it’s nice to see board game makers spend the effort on expanding the game through apps

To the developers - please set the audio session category to AVAudioSessionCategoryPlayback to allow playback while the mute switch is on
Bostiegirl,
Not worth the time
This app only plays the intro to the first case for each of the series. If you stop or pause you have to start all over. You can't scan back through for information. TBH we spent more time trying to figure out how to get it to play the intro to the case we were starting than it would've taken to just have one of us read it aloud!
Alien Grandfather,
A Nice Addendum to a Marvelous Game
This app, though limited in scope, offers a nice change-of-pace introduction to an engaging game. I’ve been a fan of SH:CD since it came in a brown vinyl three-ring binder.

Currently the app supports the first three of four case sets. The last set, The Baker Street Irregulars, has been released just recently. Give the developers a bit of time. I’m sure there is an update in our future.
Fluttering Breeze,
Turn silent mode off to use the app
At first the audio didn’t work but then a review mentioned that your phone’s silent mode has to be turned off in order for the audio to work. Easy fix!
Fun addition to the game.
Woodlandelf69,
App works fine, but...
It’s awesome to hear the first part of the story to get the game going, however, it would be nice to be able to have the app read the clues as well. You could have them listed in a button format so it wouldn’t spoil anything. The players just press the button of the lead they would like to follow. I would pay for that app
