Media Enjoyer,
How did apple get this!?!
Firstly, let me just say that I am astonished that apple was able to get this game on the arcade. Slay the spire is genuinely one of the greatest rougelikes of all time. The gameplay is wonderful, with a mix between classic dungeons and dragons style campaigning and its own unique card based combat system. Deckbuilding on each attempt up the spire os always fun and interesting, and with the amount of cards in the game, you are sure to never run out of possible combinations for strategies. Adding the relics(which are all very well designed) on top of this ensures a different experience every time you climb the spire. Meanwhile, the mysterious lore compels you to try different characters and keep climbing higher. Everything in the game is expertly designed to be as fun and intriguing as possible, to ensure you are enamored each attempt you make to climb the tower.
I have around 50 hours on this game with many more to come. This game gets the highest recommendation from me. Get it!
swergmcmuffin,
Great game, iffy controls
This is my first time playing this game, I’ve always wanted to try it out but was never sold on the idea of the whole card game mechanics. Well it turns out I’ve had an absolute blast playing this one, it’s simple, balanced and rewarding. As fun as the game is, the controls tend to be infuriating. Tapping a card in your hand to look at it almost 100% of the time will bring it up and put it right back down so you either tap it again or do this weird longer tap maneuver to actually look at it, I’d rather just being able to see your hand without having to tap the cards. And on the iPhone 14 pro, a lot of UI elements are entirely too small to read when there’s plenty of space to be utilized, so that’s kind of annoying. And with the cards right on the home bar, when trying to exit the game using the home bar you’re very likely to throw a random card out by accident. I’m having a great time playing this a couple hours in, I’ve just completed my first run and I plan to continue. If these issues get addressed, it’s an easy 5 star game. Really solid release to have on arcade among the wave of not very good games. Also super easy on battery life and playing the game doesn’t seem to even change the temperature of the phone, let alone get even slightly warmer. Solid port overall I would say.
mr.ariel37,
Great game but too unbalanced
Really live the style and concept of this game, but of course every game has some drawbacks. The game is too unbalanced when it comes to boss fights and mini bosses too. A good example would be the huge head mini boss, Huge head will deal about 50 to 60 damage per turn and has up to 300 hp which makes it impossible to beat, since there’s no way I have enough cards to block 60 damage each turn. Also considering that cards deal so little damage compared to bosses and provide very little block. Almost all bosses are like this which makes the game impossible to beat. I have been playing this game for weeks now and still haven’t beaten standard.

In terms of healing, there is no healing. The only way to heal is at rest points, downside is that you need to find the right path that has a lot of rest points, which of course there’s no pint since bosses are too overpowered. Healing is almost impossible really while enemies have the power to heal, another reason the game is unbalanced.

The game is great and fun at times, but it’s not worth the original price of 10 dollars for the version outside of arcade, if it works the same way, which I bet it does.
yaypubliclibraries,
Great game, and a waste of time
Slay the Spire joins Hearthstone and Magic: the Gathering as a compelling, indulgent luxury for anyone looking to escape the stresses of reality (I'm looking at you, anthropogenic climate change) and embrace a clear but artificial sense of purpose towards which you have agency. It's all about the journey and its interesting choices, but then how do you feel afterwards?

Unlike after a story in which I have no control (other than to generate the imagery as with a book, or imagine what the characters in a movie are feeling), and am thus witness to the philosophy and values of the author(s), this game is in the Choose Your Own Adventure category and as such doesn't leave me with much to chew on afterwards except from a game-design perspective.

For me, games like this are unhealthy. I hope your use of them is not to delay growth into a meaningful adulthood too much; like the character climbing the spire, it's okay to stop. Choose your path(s) and keep iterating!

A modern classic, with one key improvement for the Arcade version
So I’ve been playing this game for years now—I bought the game back when it was still a $20 purchase, and felt like I really got my money’s worth out of it. But over the years I occasionally deleted it from my phone for various reasons, and would lose all my progress each time I did so. The lack of any sort of cloud save was my only complaint about the original app.

So imagine my pleasant surprise when I experimented with the Apple Arcade version, and discovered everything that was great about the original app, *and* has saves that persist even when you delete and re-install the app. It’s such a nice little quality-of-life improvement to what was already an amazing game.
kylefmohr,
Pretty fun, but not listening to fan feedback
This is actually my first time playing this game, and I was pleasantly surprised at how much fun it was! The biggest, most glaring issue is the awful controls on iPad. You’re unable to read any cards in your hand until you tap on it (or try to, the game seems to bring up a different card about a third of the time). Then, if you decide not to play that card, good luck putting that card back into your hand! I’ve accidentally played so many cards in only my first run, and the way the controls work for your hand of cards is abysmal. I was surprised to see that this game has existed in essentially the exact same form for iOS for over three years, and sure enough, tons of the reviews for that game mention the same issue. Whoever is responsible for this version, *please* just finally listen to fan feedback and fix the awful controls. It really is a fun game othetwise!
angry at adds,
Can’t advance through rounds *Edit
*Edit - for the pc later out there - to advance to the next round you press and hold on the “End Turn” button. Maybe this was in the tutorial but with hundreds of hours on the pc I skipped the tutorial and went right to playing.

The game seems to be the game I love from the pc. One thing would help if the card got a lot bigger when you clicked it. On my iPhone the text is slightly hard to read. Makes me want to buy an iPad.

5 stars.

Original review:
Slay the Spire is a 10+ game. In my version when I click “end turn” the button lights up. I hear a click. But the game does not advance. I abandoned 2 runs and it happens both times. I love this game, please fix this bug. Once I can advance through rounds I will rate this 5. Is this a know bug and how do you fix it?

Great game with a fantastic gameplay loop, bug(s)
I’ll just start off by saying the game is fantastic. Excellent gameplay, functional controls and plenty of replayability. My only issue with this game so far has been with its progression system. At some point, while leveling all characters to max I guess I just wasn’t awarded the relic unlocks I was supposed to be. All my characters are now max, and I have every relic in the game unlocked, save for one relic in each rarity, which remained, and still remains locked. I have tried troubleshooting this error myself, but because you cannot modify an App’s files on iPhone, I have been unable to find any applicable solutions. This by no means ruins the game, however I would love the added variability that the extra relics would bring; especially the boss relic that I’m missing (Pandora’s box).
Lockonred,
It’s addicting as equally frustrating
I have literally only one draw back with this game. I have played it solid for about two weeks now maybe a little more . Close to everything unlocked that can be with out clearing the spire once . The last character is locked behind completion of the spire which is pretty understandable. The rogue element is unforgiving to say the least which isn’t inherently a bad thing . My complaint if I have to put it into a sentence. 3 weeks of play all cards unlocked and I can’t even sniff the top part of the 3rd level yet alone the boss. Balancing would be my suggestion I’m just not sure how .

Even though I went on a rant there a little bit . In every other way you’d judge a video game let alone a mobile game this one honestly knocks it out of the park 🔥
henderpw,
Kluge
So this was my first experience with this game. For me a major point for a deck game to have an actual deck, the kind that goes in your own two hands.

During battle you need to make a way back to your phone Home Screen that doesn’t involve fighting with cards as try to slide the game off the screen.

Then there is the card play in battle. You have to touch a card to see it. Trying to get it back down without actually playing it is sometimes tricky. Perhaps sliding the card, like defense cards, onto the table and a second touch to actually play it? I don’t know. It’s all klugy.
