Description

With SpaceCraft (MIDI, MPE, AUv3, IAA) you can transform any sound into a playable musical instrument via Granular Synthesis. You can create textures, soundscapes and arpeggiated rhythms from sounds such as your voice, ambient noise or the high quality built-in audio samples.

Tap the 'Input' button (top left) to record audio via your device's microphone or load a file from your device (access* to iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive, Audioshare*** etc.). Experiment with turning everyday sounds into unusual instruments.

Save your creations and corresponding samples via presets. Also, tap the 'rec' button (top right) to record your performance (maximum 20 minutes). This is used in standalone only as the AUv3 host can be used to record the output.

Supports AUv3 and IAA (recommended to use in the effects slot to allow live input audio recording).

* NOT COMPATIBLE with GarageBand as AUv3 (but can be loaded as Inter App Audio (IAA) or via an effects insert in the GarageBand sampler, with no MIDI capability)
** iOS11 and above provides equivalent folder access to the built-in iOS 'Files' app. Note that iOS10 and below has limited access to folders (no Audioshare folder access for iOS10 and below)
*** Access to Audioshare files is done via the iOS files app

Version history

1.2.2
2021-02-08
Changes in this version:
- Eliminated error 701 in AUM (note that this was a false error, SC is working fine and the error could be removed by tapping anywhere on the the screen)
- Updated the App Store description regarding compatibility with GarageBand

Changes in previous version:
- Infinite mode: continuous and uninterrupted granularisation of incoming audio in real-time. Grains are processed on the left of the crosshairs to allow practically zero-latency granularisation of incoming audio
- New LFO types: saw, inverted saw, triangle, square, random & smooth random
- Stereo phase: creates stereo effect by delaying left and right channels with respect to each other. Essentially converts mono input to stereo output (and can make stereo samples slightly more stereo)
- Course and fine tuning: allows full control of the pitch of the synthesis to compensate for any pitch discrepancy in the source sample
- Grain attack: allows grains to have slower attack response
- Reverb damping and reverb size controls
- Improved sound quality of DSP
- removed transparent filter as it was causing audio dropouts in some cases (transparent filter will be reintroduced once I can figure out how to fix it)

New Global Settings options:
- Option of Hann grain amplitude envelope (in global settings) giving smoother sound, especially when using higher frequency grains
- Option of Hermite interpolation in DSP algorithms resulting in better quality of lower-pitched grains
- Option of higher quality filter: smoother sounding filter when changing crosshairs
- Option to normalise audio input: automatically sets input audio recorded to maximum peak volume
- Option of transparent vs legacy filter: the transparent filter is a new feature (default) which removes the effect of the filter completely when the crosshairs is at the center. The previous (legacy) filter (slightly duller sounding when crosshairs are in centre) is included in case you want existing projects to sound completely unchanged
- Option to set MPE pitch bend range: select the appropriate setting depending on MPE hardware used (I.e. Seaboard, Linnstrument etc.)
- Optional MPE y-axis scaling multiplier: scales MPE y-axis to cover different range of the sample
- Option to disable channel pressure: disables channel pressure input when using MPE (can be useful for certain types of MIDI hardware)

1.1.1
2019-03-24
v1.1.1
- new CC mapping options in advanced settings: Disable, Default and Legacy (see www.deltavaudio.com/about for mappings)
- 'Disable' disables all mappings except sustain (CC64), seaboard reserved CCs and all notes off (CC123)
- 'Default' is a NEW* mapping (see below)
- 'Legacy' is the previous mapping from v1.1.0
- option to select 'no channels' for midi notes in
- ability to select midi channel for CC in
- added *.m4a audio file compatibility
- added feature in advanced settings to change scaling of Y-axis/Slide (grain position modulation) for MPE
- fixed bug where notes sometimes didn’t load when opening a preset which included a scale change
- fixed bug where visualisation of waveform would not appear in the edge case where an audio file is loaded via the preset panel when in live sampling mode

* the CC mapping added recently in V1.0.0 on the App Store unfortunately clashes with some midi standard CC mappings. The new ‘default’ mapping is designed to avoid such clashes, improving compatibility with other apps/devices. For existing users who have used the old CC mapping in their recent projects, you can select ‘legacy mapping’ in advanced settings. However, it is recommended to switch the default mapping to avoid issues in future. Note that this does not in any way impact parameters mapped to CC via an AUv3 host.

See website for a list of the default/legacy mappings

— Option to set pitch bend amount (in advanced settings panel)
— MPE presets added (start with these and add your own sounds!)
- MIDI and MPE are now active at all times (no need to change modes)
— Amplitude envelope is now a dedicated option (envelope can now be used with a non-chromatic grid, MIDI/MPE can now be used without the envelope if desired)
— MIDI channel selection option (advanced settings)
- Scales improvements:
— Loads of scales added (34 in total!) including the modes and pentatonic scales
— Scales can now be used with MIDI and MPE
— Sequencer note grid auto resizes with scale
- Option to transpose sample pitch per-sequencer in range +/- 1 Octave with resolution of 1 semitone
- When saving project in AU host, the loaded sample will be automatically saved (like with presets)
- Parameter automation now fully functional in AUv3 hosts including Cubasis and NS2
- Factory presets can now be selected via host GUI
- Fixed bug where the ‘all notes off’ button sometimes wouldn’t terminate notes as expected
- Now always starts with default state when in standalone mode (presets should be used in standalone)
- All parameters controllable via MIDI CC-in (CC channel can be selected via Advanced Settings)
— CC 6 thru CC 41 = all parameters (XY controls + ‘actions’ such as record and monitor), see website for details
— CC 64 = sustain pedal (both sequencers)
— CC 123 = all notes off (both sequencers)
v1.0.9
2019-01-16
Granular engine audio processing enhanced: cleaner sound with elimination of subtle ringing artefacts (no impact on CPU)
1.0.8
2018-12-01
- New colour themes (tap settings then Advanced Settings to select theme)
- Internal file management (presets & audio files):
-- Factory presets included (more to come!)
-- Audio is saved internally* to SpaceCraft when saving a preset or AU project (the audio is then automatically loaded with the preset/AU project)
-- Audio files efficiently shared between presets (based on audio file name, all filenames must be unique)
-- Recording input audio now automatically saves* audio file internally
-- Recording output (performances) now automatically saves* audio file internally
- 'touch here to play' only appears the first time you start up the app

* To conserve disk space, user can manually delete unwanted internal user audio via the 'delete selected audio' button
v1.0.7
2018-10-21
- File saving/loading stability updates:
- iOS12 files app freezing fixed
- Dropbox and Google Drive supported
- Can now be loaded as AUv3 Instrument* (not supported in GarageBand)
- IAA now available again in GarageBand

* Audio input cannot be recorded when loaded as an AUv3 instrument, if you want to record audio input please load as an effect (this is a fundamental limitation of AUv3 instruments in general)
V1.0.6
2018-10-11
V1.0.6 minor bug fixes:
- fixed bug in visualisation of waveform: would not appear when loading a file after recording input
- resized presets panel for iPhone.
1.0.5
2018-10-06
The biggest update yet, by far! V1.0.5

- MIDI mode: velocity sensitive notes can be played via midi (use hardware midi controller, AUv3 host on-screen keyboard or another midi sequencer) with chromatic sequencer showing all 128 midi notes, notes reset button, latch mode button, midi notes amplitude envelope with Attack/Release XY-pad
- New MPE mode: accepts multi-channel MPE input for per note amplitude (pressure) and per-note grain modulation (slide). Ideal for Roli Seaboard !
- Parameter state-saving and preset file import/export (audio samples must be loaded manually)
- New Live Sampling Mode allows you to record (and monitor) audio input and granularise in real-time!
- Added new automatable parameters that can be controlled via an AUv3 host (including record and monitor)
- Option to manually export audio sample (use this to save any recorded audio)
- Double tap range (top) to view entire audio sample, double tap again to zoom on the region at play-head location
- Tempo sync now includes triplets and frequency band visualisation
- LFO enhancements: now tempo synced and behaves more musically at higher frequencies
- Arpeggiator enhancements: smoother transition when changing grain frequency and notes no longer jump around when adding notes
- New advanced settings pane: option to force stereo input (many more advanced settings options coming in future updates!)

Bug fixes and stability improvements:
- Memory and performance optimisations: now 2 instances possible in all hosts, 3 in AUM!
- Fixed bug where SC would crash if the AUv3 window was closed when the file chooser (white window) was open

NB: saving of presets and audio samples to Dropbox not currently supported.
1.0.4
2018-07-13
AU File loading robustness improvements:
- fixed bug where if multiple AU instances are open, the file chooser appears in the first window
- show dialogue in file loading panel which states that the AU window should never be closed if the file chooser (white background) is open (this only shows when it is loaded as an AU)
1.0.3
2018-07-10
1. File loading/saving works without iCloud Drive enabled
2. File loading/saving works when using as AU inside a host such as AUM, apeMatrix, Audiobus 3, Beatmaker 3 etc.
3. Tempo sync implemented (activate it in settings): in standalone you can choose the tempo, when using as AU it will automatically sync to the host temp
4. Ableton link supported (via sync feature above) when using SpaceCraft as an AU Effect in an Ableton link compatible host (e.g. AUM, apeMatrix)
5. "back to host" button appears when using as IAA
6. Single note mode on keyboard, so you can move your finger fast over the keys to play melodies without note latching
7. Scale mode on pitch/mod X/Y-pad (quantises the pitch to whatever scale the keyboard is in)
8. Added a monitor button which appears when you record input
9. Now when you record input in one sequencer, the playback doesn't cut out on the other sequencer, for a more seamless performance
1.0.2
2018-06-30
- Performance recording duration can be extended to 20 minutes (enable in settings - ensure your device has enough free memory)
- Dialogue instructs user to enable iCloud Drive in order to load/save files in standalone/IAA mode
- Double tap to center (pitch/mod XY-pad only)
- AU parameters names updated to be clearer
- Dialogue appears to inform user that files cannot be loaded/saved in AU mode
- Fixed notes stuck on on keyboard
- Modified volume scaling (less rapid initial volume increase)
1.0.1
2018-06-25
1. if iCloud drive is not enabled and the user tries to load/save a file a dialogue appears which tells the user that iCloud drive must be enabled in order to load/save files and gives instructions on how to enable iCloud drive
2. removed text 'Audioshare' from import sound panel for now (no change to functionality): this has been removed as Audioshare compatiblity is not 100% although you can load/save from your Audioshare files via the in-app load/save features (make sure Audioshare is enabled as a location in the iOS 'Files' app!

Leom187,
Lives up to the hype
First, the interface lives up to the name. The user friendly xy pads and visual feedback make you feel like you’re piloting a spacecraft into new sonic territories, of which there are many you will find. Loading audio files is a breeze and you can load pretty long ones. I haven’t reached the limit. This leaves you with many many sonic possibilities within just one file. Very musical sounds, cool arpeggiator type thing to add even more rhythm to the sound. Honestly it’s hard to describe, but in the end, it’s a hell of a lot of fun to use and sounds great. The interface is such that there’s nothing to do but dive in and go crazy. Good times. Get it.
BozoToo,
Its pretty good, but...
There are lots of grain synthesis aps out now so this one has some competition. How does it stand up? Pretty well. Like most of the grain synthesis aps, the audio quality is quite good. It has the usual features but adds a kind of “playability” that is hard to describe but easy to recognize once you get your hands on it. The new version’s ability to use LARGE audio files (something like 20 minutes long) sets Spacecraft apart as very unique and can be quite useful. So on these points it competes pretty well.

However, its integration into the Audio Units world is rather odd. You must use it as an EFFECT in AUM, for example, while it is clearly a source (an actual synthesizer capable of originating its own sounds). When used as an AU, only one of the two channels is available in any one slot. Being an AU, you should be able to launch more than one instance of Spacecraft. But sadly, that will not work. Doing so results in crashing both instances.

The other major problem at this point in its history is that the ap will not save your work; it has no ability to save presets. However, the developer assures us that this feature is coming in a future release.

If these things were fixed, my personal opinion of Spacecraft would go up to rate it at least at four stars because I could actually use it and really exploit its otherwise very good capabilities.
ErikSF999,
Sounds great! Can't save or import anything on iOS 9 or 10.
I like this simpler-than-iDensity granular synth quite a lot. It is more immediately intuitive than Tardigrain without losing the wonderful unpredictability of granular synthesis in producing interesting, beautiful, arresting, terrifying sounds. The interface is one of the better distillations of granular parameters that I have seen so far on the App Store.

Unfortunately, Spacecraft does not truly support Audioshare; it supports Apple's Files app, leaving users on iOS 9 and 10 with only iCloud for sound import/export. Nor does it store presets internally. Those have to go on iCloud as well. I don't use iCloud, and don't see much point in uploading my samples there to redownload them into a single app when Audioshare has everything already here on my iPad. So for now, Spacecraft is a demo on my iOS 9-running mini. A really nice demo--I hope to be able to make better use of it soon.
SMKartiat,
Audio Share support MISSING!
This is actually a cool granular synth app. Like most apps of this style, access to your audio files is critical for the complete enjoyment of this instrument. The controls are really nice. The addition of a sequencer really make this granular synth standout, making live performance that much easier.

So why only 3 stars?

True IAA support is MISSING. My audiobus 3 and Beatmaker 3 do not see it an instrument, and sorry but effect “only” IAA is not good enough. Not when you can make some amazing stuff now but can not use it in your AB3 and Beatmaker 3.

But the biggest infraction: NO AUDIOSHARE SUPPORT!

((Where is it?))

This is a granular synth and the first thing you should be programing in is an option to go directly to your audioshare and grab your waves. This should be a rule for EVERY programmer when it comes to developing user sample/wave dependent synths like granulars: get your audioshare protocols handled FIRST. Get that done and out of the way before you even look at posting into the app store.

Roll out the next update with direct to audioshare and I’ll change the rating to 4 stars. Audioshare and true IAA support so my Audiobus 3 and Beatmaker 3 can use this as an instrument gets you all 5 stars. Make this happen asap, please, you got a good app here.
johngme22,
A No-Brainer Buy
I cannot believe all you get for less than a fancy cup of coffee. Spacecraft is Unbelievable. So much fun. Easy to use and understand. And it sounds great!!! It is excellent for soundscapes.

Using the app as an AU in an effect slot is not a problem; It works fine there. And I had no problem importing sounds from within the program using icloud or audioshare. (It seems like you can’t send a sound from within audioshare; you have to start from within Spacecraft. No big deal.)

Great app. Watch a video on it. If you like what you hear, buy it. And then have hours of fun! It’s great!
Dddduncan,
Worth it.
I love granular synthesis, the way you can pick up tiny things in a sound that you’d never find otherwise. Having most of the others, I was hesitant to buy this one, but it’s probably my favorite granular synthesis implementation on iOS. The only improvements I’d suggest would be with the lfo... maybe he ability to choose what to route it to, as well as it going slower and having more waveforms. And a built in (pre-reverb) delay wouldn’t hurt, but is totally unnecessary. Worth your money for sure, if you’re in to more experimental sounds.
Krusecom,
My favorite app and I have a ton of music apps
Much thanks to the developer for such a unique and musical granular synth. I know there is a version 2 on the way and am looking forward to it. Is there any way we could see another new app based on granular synthesis in the future? Granular is my preferred method of creating and there are only a couple apps out there. But you are the master Mark and wonder what else you could create. Thanks and please consider

Future
This app is the best. It's instantly approachable but allows for extremely deep creations. Unlike almost every other iOS app it is actually usable live on an iPhone, with all the controls on 1 screen and no tiny fiddly buttons.

Feature want: the ability to enter rest notes into the sequencer, maybe via a quick double-tap. The ability to create pauses would be sublime.
Natemasterflex,
Actively Making It Better!!
The developer is adding great features and I appreciate that. This app has tons of potential and is already really fun to use and sound quality is good. I hope the developer keeps the great updates coming!!! Thanks for your hard work!
Jshualaub,
Really fun, but...
I love using this to make and record impromptu sounds, but I can only seem to record 1 minute of audio using iPhone app before it cuts me off and makes me save it. Everywhere I read it claims to be able to record up to 20 minutes and I was excited about that.

Do you need the iPad app to record the 20 minutes? I can’t seem to find any contact information or info online to find my answer.
