Description

Do you have a chronic condition? You are no longer alone. Join the community for your condition, see the experience of others, and share yours. Contact people directly or join the community’s discussion. The information everyone shares is turned into real data that helps the community. Treatments, symptoms, triggers, what works and what doesn't and more.

It’s more than a community. Using crowdsourcing, we’re building the ultimate knowledge base for your chronic condition, together. Everyone’s experience is turned into real data and useful insights, including organized information on how others experience the condition and AI analysis of which treatments work best and for whom. The more people share, the smarter it becomes.

Millions of experiences are turned into useful features:

• Organized information about hundreds of treatments, symptoms, triggers, co-existing conditions, side effects and more
• A list of the most effective and most detrimental treatments, based on AI-analysis (once your community has enough members)
• Keep track of your overall health and wellbeing with a personalized timeline, composed of your daily updates and objective health metrics from wearables (including automatic integration with the Health app)
• View other members’ reports
• Easily interact with others on the discussion board and chat
• Get access to an interactive map of members by similarity – those closest are the most similar to you
• Add your own research questions for the entire community to answer
• Search the data for people who tried a specific treatment or had similar circumstances
• With time, as more contributors join, you’ll learn which treatment works best for your AI-identified subgroup, tailored to your characteristics

There are 750+ conditions on StuffThatWorks. Here are a few of them: Asthma, migraine, psoriasis, endometriosis, long COVID, anxiety, depression, PTSD, ADHD, BPD, Lupus, MS, Crohn’s, IBS, arthritis, hypertension, diabetes, PCOS, menopause, sleep apnea, hypothyroidism, tinnitus, fibromyalgia, psoriasis, narcissistic abuse, obesity, acne, epilepsy, anorexia, eczema, OCD, lupus, restless leg syndrome, and many more…

If a community for your chronic condition doesn’t exist, you can easily start it.

Kyra I.,
Must-Have for Chronically Ill
I really like this app. It’s very informative, even as someone who’s been managing chronic illnesses for 8 years, as there’s always something new to learn. I love that it shows the most tried and best treatments from people‘s real experiences. It makes me feel empowered and that I can be in the conversation when talking with my doctor about treatment plans. The analytics from the AI program are also being constantly updated based on new reports from incoming members, which is nice. It means that the reports and results are in real time and won’t be outdated. Another thing that is beneficial is being able to see other people like me in these communities. A lot of the time, chronic illness can be isolating, but this makes me feel like my experiences are valid and I’m not alone. There are so many people out there that are similar to me health-wise. I think the best thing about StuffThatWorks is that people want to help each other succeed on this app. People post polls and questions and they’re always answered with support and no judgement, unlike other group forums I’ve been a part of. The only tricky part for me is actually seeing responses to my posts and polls on the app. I would love if we could make that more easily accessible. Other than that, I have nothing negative to say. This app is a must-have for someone trying to manage both physical and/or mental illness.
Jc974493,
Skeptical at first, but love it!!
I was a bit skeptical because of the overall meh reviews, but after looking through all the 1 star reviews I wanted to give it a go. I absolutely love the app. They do have a privacy agreement. The information is safe and nothing is shared within the communities without consent, and information isn’t sold. The surveys are admittedly long, but I love that! Having THAT much more detail and overall information for every condition is so important to find trends in what most likely will or won’t help with treatment/pain/symptoms. I don’t know anyone else personally who has CRPS, so having a little community of people to view shared symptoms and feelings about the condition, as well as seeing how common depression/PTSD was as a comorbidity, made me feel a bit of relief. The user base is admittedly limited simply because of the amount of users putting in their info isn’t massive, but you can still find overall trends for most efficient and most common treatments. The #1 most effective treatment was one I had considered in the past, but ultimately decided against. I plan to revisit it now after seeing how it has made a difference for others, because any relief with CRPS is huge. Again, I love this app. It will only continue to improve as it grows!
janaiaaaaa,
BRILLIANT idea
I recently discovered this app, and in doing so, I couldn’t help but wish that I knew of it sooner.

A little over three years ago, I was diagnosed with a chronic illness. This left me feeling very overwhelmed, lost, and confused on how to go about managing my condition. I felt like there was nobody I could turn to in my immediate circle for help, because no one else shared the same diagnosis. That’s why I’ve become such a huge fan of this app! It’s provided me with the opportunity to hear from others with the same condition about what treatments work and what treatments don’t work for them. It’s also great to receive advice from people who know what you’re going through, and this helps me feel less alone in my journey!
Monsterhigh1,
Jump through hoops just to join a community
I was so excited when I found this app because I have multiple debilitating illnesses and it’s difficult to find others who have the same or similar illnesses. However when I went to join my first community, it was making me jump through hoops by answering over 50 questions just to get started (and over 60 in some of the more common illness communities). This wouldn’t have been a huge deal whatsoever if I only had one illness, but I have several illnesses and had several communities I was excited to join but I would have had to fill out hundreds of questions by time I joined them all.

I understand wanting to have people prove the validity of their illness so not everyone who doesn’t have the illness/care for someone with the illness is joining, but over 50 questions is a bit much, if not rather insulting, since you shouldn’t need to answer dozens upon dozens of questions to prove you’re not lying. It looked like a very well designed and thought out app, but you shouldn’t have to answer so many questions just to get in. A handful of specific questions would have sufficed such as when were you diagnosed, what are your symptoms, etc., etc.. The questions weren’t anything hard, but just extremely time consuming if you’re joining multiple communities.

Great, but needs improvement
I think this app is great. It really helps you find communities with the same problems, as questions to people who don’t think you are crazy and actually take the time to consider your proposition, and to encourage one another. However, I have run into 3 complaints:
1) I have not found a navigation to your own discussion post. Meaning it is really hard, sometimes impossible, to follow up on responses to your posts/questions.
2) The app never wants to allow me to take a survey anymore, allowing me to join my medical groups as a member. It remains on the loading screen trying to pull it up.
3) You have to take a very long survey anytime you become a member to a medical group. Some of the questions are necessary and I am happy to answer, but some of them are repetitive, like you name or age. This information should be acquired on a basic profile status and not in every survey for membership.
Utleylover,
Highly Recommend
This app has been very very very helpful for me, especially recently, as I’ve had to navigate a flare up of a new combo of symptoms that I didn’t know how to treat. Reading the posts in the community & the data insights related to my specific conditions [and associated symptoms] helped me find some really effective ways to treat my flare. Also, knowing that there’s a community of people who understand what it’s like to live with my specific conditions out there is one of the best feelings — they just get it! And it’s easily accessible! All I need is my phone or computer. I definitely recommend checking this app out. It can really help your physical & mental health, which is so crucial.
Zerø L,
Great in concept, so so in execution.
The idea is awesome. It’s full of great little communities and I love the research aspect of it. But there are a few issues with the UI. For one, you can’t go to your profile and view your posts and you don’t get notifications in the app itself. When you post a poll, you can’t view the notes (aka comments) and it disappears entirely from your view unless you check your email, basically making it basically useless. The same goes for posts. It’s incredibly hard to search through the list of posts as they are sorted seemingly randomly, and there’s no option to sort by newest.

I think this app could genuinely become one of the best support systems for disabled people, if only it acted more like other social medias.
aleciaisis,
Great app concept, horrible user interface
I love the concept of this app because it’s helped me with my rare disorder and other diagnoses. However, the user interface absolutely has to change—it’s especially not friendly to a group of people who likely use this because of health anxiety/OCD. We go crazy trying to delete/add a community, trying to post to discussion boards, trying to navigate the whole thing—its a nightmare. I don’t know what team was responsible designing this in such a complicated way, but y’all really got to simplify things. This should be like reddit, or a forum + the stats + research questions. This app has the potential to be very popular and attract more if it were more algorithm friendly—instead it’s more like a niche app that you only find by accident (like me). So please fix the interface.
Imma Weasleysweater,
An absolute game-changer!
A few years ago, I became sick with multiple rare chronic conditions, which has made it extremely difficult for my doctors and I to find treatments that actually help me. I found STW a few weeks ago, and since then I have been able to see which treatments work best for people who have the same illnesses that I do. I’ve been able to collaborate with my doctors and begin to find treatments that have worked for me, but also compare treatments I have tried/am taking with other people’s experiences. I would 1000% recommend this app for anybody who has a chronic condition!
Hello, yes this is me,
Fills a really important niche!!
As a biology student with chronic illnesses, I’ve been kind of frustrated by the disorganization of chronic illness forums for a while, and this is a great solution!! It still allows people to share the more subjective personal experiences and opinions that are so important when dealing with less-studied issues, but also considers a lot of objective information. I also like how everyone’s comorbidities or favorite treatments are shown in a formal ranking, because on other platforms, you have to figure that out by how many comments you see, and that can be really skewed by who comments more often.
