This app is a necessity if you want to sort through thousands of photos on an iPhone. DS photo is horrible when you’re trying to find a phone from years ago and you don’t know exactly when it was taken. But the ability to look through lots of photos easily is one of the only good things about it. You still need DS Photo to actually organize your photos into folders.

What Moments Needs:
PASSWORD PROTECTION - This is an absolute must and it’s the only Synology app that doesn’t have it. This needs to be added immediately to protect the photos.

Ability to separate photos by albums. Having all photos lumped together is great until you have multiple family members saving photos which leads to lots of viewing redundancy.

Facial recognition needs a lot of work. It doesn’t recognize people from different photo sets.

Ability to change the “badge photo” for people. It chooses the absolute worse photos and there’s no rhyme or reason. I don’t want an infant photo to display for a child that’s now ten years old.

You need to run both DS Photo and Moments for full function on an iPhone. If it wasn’t for the fact that I can easily search through photos I wouldn’t use Moments at all. It makes a mess of things in general.
515master,
Could be amazing - but does the job
I upload photos from previous years in its entirety and consider this more of a place to archive all photos other than the current year and works fine. For example I have all photos up to 2020 and when 2021 is complete I will upload in its entirety. Kind of like tax returns. Yes it’s a little clunky here and there but having all your photos over 10 years is kind of cool.

I then just use iCloud for just the current year and pay 3 a month for the simplicity of the apple photos app but not paying 10 a month for their high tier. Seriously apple needs to get with the times with cloud space. I just want all my photos in one place without having to pay $120 a year. But using two apps is I guess the next best thing.

Missing one key feature
I’m generally pleased with the app and the integration with my NAS, but it fails to auto-backup the camera roll unless you open the app. This makes me have to think about my backup. Would love to see this just happen like so many other photo backup apps do. I often go weeks before I remember that I’ve taken photos and that I haven’t opened this app.

Otherwise it’s been great for viewing and getting media off my phone and iPad.

Good idea, poor execution
I recently purchased a Synology NAS, with one of its use cases being that I could be less reliant on Apple cloud technologies to store and retain my personal photos. I was hopeful that the Moments app would do the trick, but it only kind of works.

In the sense that it can grab your photos off of your phone and back them up to the NAS, it works. However, it does an absolutely HORRIBLE job of interpreting the metadata associated with each photo. I have photos that I took years ago that are showing up as just having been taken yesterday! For whatever reason Moments is unable to properly decode the date metadata, so from an organizational and searching perspective the app is a major failure. I’m unsure if I’ll continue to utilize it until such time as Synology can fix this very basic issue with the app’s functionality.

Don’t understand the hate...
PhotoStation has been long in the tooth for a while now. Moments is a clear path forward for those who refuse to pay Apple or give up everything to Google. Compared to Apple it supports more platforms giving you future mobility. Unlike Google the files are in your house not some magically “free” cloud. You can literally pull the plug and destroy the drives if you feel the urge - but therein lies the rub. You need to treat your Disk Station like the holy grail it is. I may go a little overboard but in addition to parity RAID you’ll want an additional physical backup and an encrypted cloud one too. Throw your DS, router, and modem on battery backups and you’ll be good to go!

Works Great If Apple Would Let It
Moments works great!! Love having access to my photos from any device in my home. However Apple will not let the app fully refresh in the background (as or right now) so you need to keep the app open and onscreen to transfer your photos. I wish Apple would build a setting that I could check/allow to let this app run in the background while plugged in or something. I know competing mobile device developers do... The app gets five stars but Apple needs to add functionality.
Wxooo,
step away from a great app
I love the nature look of the Moments app and hot it organize photos and videos with reasonable accuracy of face recognition and AI.
A bit feature request to make the app perfect to me is make it truly automatically upload photos to NAS in background. I know iOS doesn’t support for random app to fetch in background but DS photo supports that with geofencing on. So maybe we can do that here as well and to save battery, we can have a schedule (day every night) to turn on that and start to upload.
thecheatah,
It’s a toy for now
Not a serious purpose built app. Doesn’t upload photos in the background. Get stuck when uploading a video in a format it doesn’t like. I have been keeping my phone on for a few nights now to get my photos backed up. Will probably cause burn in on the oled screen.

Other apps from competing services will prefetch data from iCloud and upload several photos/videos in parallel. They are much faster and handle errors in a user friendly way. This app is clearly built by people who are too abstracted away from actual users. Bad product team!
cbarles,
Swiping through photos glitch
When I am viewing photos full screen and swipe for the next photo, instead of settling on the next photo it settles halfway between photos with black bar in the middle every time. I installed this momentarily (haha) to test it out because I would rather use it than iCloud or google. I am currently using all 3 and moments is the clear loser at the moment (haha). Will continue to check functionality again because I like synology but so far it doesn’t do anything google photos can’t do, and is buggy. iCloud has less features but it works best IMO and is solid.
Cs3gallery,
Love it
Always been amazed and impressed with Synology. We use the bigger ones in our corporate offices holding over 100TBs of data.
This review is based on my personal DS412+ I have at home. My entire family has been using photos but always wished we had something that would read the exif data and organize it. Well now it’s hear and I am happy to say so far it works really well, especially for a beta.
They even added a way to mass delete all the photos and videos on your phone after they have been backed up to free up some space! Yes finally!!!
The only things I hope they do fairly soon although certainly not a priority is to make the screen adjust correctly on the iPhone X.

Thanks Synology!
