Description

Are you a cyclist looking to increase your performance and efficiency on the bike? We got you.

Welcome to The Breakaway, your personal performance Coach.

The Breakaway provides cyclists with the data, guidance, and motivation needed to improve on the bike. Our main mission is to help you answer the simple question “What should I do today?”.

How do we do this?

STEP ONE: YOU GOTTA KNOW WHERE YOU’RE STARTING FROM, TO GET WHERE YOU WANT TO GO.

When you sign up, we pull up to a year of your past training to analyze your strengths and weaknesses. We sync with Strava, Garmin, Wahoo, Hammerhead, Zwift, Peloton, Oura and more to come. We are the single source of your performance data so you can spend less time analyzing, more time riding.

STEP TWO: WHAT GETS MEASURED GETS IMPROVED.
Set your high-level goals and availability to train and we’ll show you how to spend your time to hit your objectives.

STEP THREE: YOU STILL HAVE TO DO THE WORK. NOW GO RIDE, AND WE’LL DO THE REST. YOU GOT THIS.
We’ll analyze every one of your rides and use that data to help you know what you need to do to see improvement.

STEP FOUR: TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAMWORK.
If you’ve ever ridden in a group, you know how important your friends are to helping you reach your goals. Invite your friends to train and celebrate each others progress!
We'll show you that improvement is simple...but not always easy.

Are you tired of 'Fitness Scores' that show you a number that's pretty meaningless? I'm at 71? Or an 87? I always struggle with what that actually means...

Today we introduce Capacity.

What's Capacity? Simply put, your Capacity, is your Aerobic potential today, based on your training and workload in the past weeks. It's the total kilojoules you can do, at tempo, without falling apart and it's the best measure of endurance you'll find.

What's your Capacity?

Lucky number 7 here with 4.7 release.

As Always, lots of little fixes and speed improvements but we have 2 big updates for you here:

1. RPE. Rate of Perceived Exertion. This is the gold standard for any coach and now we've added it for every ride. Want to tell us something was harder than we thought? RPE is the way. A simple but enjoyable 1 to 10 rating anytime you need it.
2. Oura! We're pretty excited about this one. For Oura users, we now correlate your HRV to your training data and show it to you in a simple 'Go/No-go' format. So now your Oura data can be used to help guide your training. Simple and effective, this is your 'should I do intensity today' guide.

Louis0410,
Simple intuitive training app and more
I’ve been using this app for 6 months. The UI is simple and motivating. It has helped eliminate my tendency to overthink and over train. I really like the visual tracking of my power profile and I find it a motivator to push all my energy systems on a regular basis. I was able to break through a big plateau and add 25 watts to my ftp in 3 months using the guidance of the app alone.
The support that comes with the app is unbeatable. So much value between the free webinars, coached training blocks etc. I really enjoy the Facebook group - a real supportive community of users in there to offer friendly advice, and love that Christian Vande Velde chimes in with encouragement our discussions.
I have since added Zwift and TrainerRoad to my tool chest, but Breakaway will remain my Homebase for tracking all my activity and monitoring my workload. I find it to be better at capturing my activity and the best “dashboard” for everything. Exhibit A - my power meter died today 10mins into a 100km ride. TrainerRoad logged the activity as 60kj, but Breakaway automatically logged 2,200kj - a very accurate estimate from my heart rate data, and inline with what I would typically log on an endurance ride of that duration.
Very satisfied and can’t wait to see what they do next- it keeps improving with more features. Hope this review helps. Ride safe!
olegdulin,
Tons of potential, great value!
I have been a fan of Christian Vande Velde for some time. I learned of this app from chatting with him at Hincapie Gran Fondo in Lehigh Valley. I use both Peloton and Zwift. I also ride outdoors. This app can aggregate data across all platforms I use. The way the data is presented makes it intuitive and easy to set and pursue goals and achieve PRs. One of the things I like is that “all time PRs” are secondary to “8 week.” For a middle aged dad like me who wants to stay in shape, it’s much easier to look at my fitness by asking “am I doing better today than I did two months ago?” as opposed to “Am I faster in my 40s than I was in my 20s?” The greatest value though comes with monthly training programs curated by Christian Vande Velde and Mari Holden. Both are very much involved and openly communicate with the members. The monthly webinar at the start of each program is extremely motivating and useful. The app has a ton of potential to grow into a general coaching/fitness app covering multiple modalities in the future.
-TBD-,
“Never Know How Much You Don’t Know”
Pro or beginner; this App holds a mirror to you, maps out where you are, how far you have come, and throws you curveballs if you are willing to go all the way.

It’s Power driven and communicates to all cool cycling platform and gadgets out there (Peloton, Zwift, Garmin, Wahoo). Simple, user friendly, and provides valuable KPI. One of the best capability of this App vs everything else out there, is that without expensive coaching on your side, it takes your data and shows your skill levels in Sprint, Attack, and Climb with respect to your age and sex.

Above all, what got me most attracted to this tool, was the level of professionalism, etiquette, and care of the developers of this App. Like others, I experienced some early glitches in synchronization but when I reached out, they were there, communicated transparently and mitigated the issue. This is a rare quality in todays Tech world and must be treasured when we see honest work by people who care most about the user experience and the service they are providing.

Thank You!
Tia
bby5555,
fantastic
It has been such a great help in my training. I’m not looking to race, but just want to get stronger. This app has let me put together a plan for my week that allows me flexibility to go indoor or out, but also enter into each ride with a little bit more intention and but still the flexibility to just enjoy my time on the bike. Been using the app for about 5 months now and have already set quite a few prs, and did a metric century with plenty left in the tank when I was done.
TW12398,
So far so bad-no Strava/Wahoo connectivity, poor support
It’s probably great if you use Garmin and Zwift. Wahoo is in beta and Breakaway doesn’t upload any data fromWahoo servers. For me, who have the majority of my data on Wahoo, not useful without it. Seems like a must have to support Strava, but not even on their radar. Support has been virtually nonexistent. They responded and said someone in tech support would get back, but after about 4 weeks, no interaction to resolve my issue. Seems like a half baked release to me. My experience was bad, both with the app and support, but the interface, data analysis and workout focus seem like they make it a very useful tool- that’s why I gave it two stars instead of 1. Looks good from afar, poor interaction up close.
Muck Chiller,
Perfectly bridges the gap between Strava and a personal coach
This app is fantastic! The graphs and manner in which the app aggregates data is exceedingly helpful. There is also a hearty collection of structured workouts and direction as to which workouts one should complete to meet specific performance goals. It works very well with Strava or a bike computer and even Zwift connect to bring in your ride data. Very helpful and the money I’m saving in a personal coach frees up coin for more bikes!!
mhw23,
Great Potential, Hampered by Data Sync Issues
I love this app and the concept. Very well done and executed. I would subscribe today if the data synced reliably. I use both a Peloton and Garmin Edge 830. The first time I used it, all my Peloton info came over but it was missing my most recent Garmin data. After a few rides, no Garmin sync and now Peloton sync has also stopped working. I’ve disconnected and reconnected accounts and even deleted the app and started over in the hopes it would work. I even reached out to support who asked me for some info but then never got back to me again. I’ve kept the app on my phone in the hopes that it will work one day.
cyclistmari,
Rides don’t upload
I have a Wahoo element and it seems like many others have had similar issues as far as having rides uploaded. It’s interesting to see the various “excuses of the week” that the co-founder responds with in each review blaming it on something that will be solved the following week; however the issue is still prevalent and it’s sad because this could be such a cool app! It could definitely compete with training peaks or others but my rides ALWAYS upload to training peaks I don’t have to fuss trying to get my rides uploaded and there’s more rider/coach connection .
Hopefully the breakaway can get better data syncing or something because I really would love to use this app.
Mr. Luigi,
Still occasionally does not sync workouts
Since a big part of this app is completing the prescribed types of workouts each week, when one of those workouts fails to sync to the app it has a bad domino effect on what the app is saying about your training. At the risk of stating the obvious, this needs attention and fixing.

P.S. My most recent lost workout was on August 2, 2022. It was a Zwift workout...like all my other workouts that week. All others synced fine. 🤔
Jakez101,
Buggy prototype but has potential
Cool concept and beautiful UI, but is virtually non functional for me. Isn’t even a mvp. It’s more like a Beta prototype and definitely not worth paying for at this point. I got Peloton to connect and pull in ride history when setting up the app. Then with my subsequent rides, Breakaway didn’t update. Wahoo said it was connected at setup, but no data ever imported. So, couldn’t even get past the point of getting enough ride data into the app to even use it. The app is just too buggy at this point. Will check back later to see if the kinks get worked out.
