This app requires iOS 8.0+ which I don’t have, and crashes when I try to view details about alerts. As a result, I can only get notifications about alerts in my area, without being able to see what the alert is for. The version requirement, like the school’s administrative policies, unfairly targets financially disadvantaged students and prevents them from having fair access to services.
Additionally, this app uses scare tactics to pressure students into living on-campus. The constant stream of Safety Alert notifications crates an atmosphere of anxiety for students who live off campus, and adds to the distrust between students and Hyde Park locals. In turn, this atmosphere causes incidents such as shootings, robberies, and assaults, to become more frequent which is completely counterproductive to the intended purpose of this app.
