A WRITEMAP OUTLINE PAINTS A THOUSAND WORDS

WriteMapper was built to leverage the visual nature of mind maps to give you a bird's-eye view of your writing structure. Just one glance is all it takes for you to get a good feel for the flow of your work.

In doing so, you get a comprehensive yet clear picture of what's going on in your content. And, if you need to rearrange your writing sequences or move stuff around, it's as simple as drag and drop.

BRAINSTORM YOUR WAY THROUGH WRITER’S BLOCK

Ever write down the title, and then face a mental struggle with the rest of the blank page? WriteMapper helps you overcome writer's block by turning your writing process into a brainstorming exercise.

This allows you to rapidly and relentlessly generate ideas and points for your writing. Just spend a couple minutes on this quick-fire process, and before you know it, you'll have a fully-formed content structure all ready to go!

DISTRACTION-FREE WRITING

Each node on the mind map has a content section you can jump in to edit at anytime. Besides being able to style and format your writing however you like, you can also edit the title of this sub-point from this view as well.

The distraction-free writing mode helps you shift gears from the all-aspects-considered nature of the mind map outline, to the focused task of detailing the contents of the individual sub-point you're zoomed in on.

PLAYS WELL WITH TEAMMATES

WriteMapper uses the nested structure of a mind map to automatically create and export a text document for you, right in your computer's file system. You can choose from a variety of file formats, including Markdown, HTML, Microsoft Word, plain text and Rich Text Format.

You can then edit the exported document in your text editing app of choice, to give that final draft the polish it needs to bring it to completion. With this supercharged content generation workflow, you'll get your writing done in no time at all!

HIGHLY PRAISED

"It has the perfect balance of elegance and features, and the text-editor itself is killer."—Charlie Sorrel, Cult of Mac

"WriteMapper is such a powerful tool. This workflow is so logical and intuitive."—Michael Levy

"Holy graphic design, that's one beautiful interface."—/u/bengiannis

- Fixed an issue where block embeds in the content editor were sometimes hard to exit out of.

2019-09-09
We've put a ton of work into this update, addressing parts of the app that could be rounded out better, as well as implementing several small but helpful features to get WriteMapper to work even better for you than before.

Also, this release ensures that the WriteMapper will be supported on iPadOS. Notably, the app will integrate with Dark Mode on iPadOS, but also continue to work on iOS 12 should you choose to not update your device yet. Here's a full list of improvements and bug fixes you'll find in this update:

NOTABLE IMPROVEMENTS

- Added new Categorize Node Colors option to long-press menu of root node, which sets a distinct color for each H2 node (and their children).
- Added option to change color tags of individual nodes, without affecting its child nodes.
- Better recent file management, reducing number of files displayed to three, and added an option to clear the list.
- Dark mode integration with iPadOS, where dark mode in the app will now sync with the dark mode setting of iPadOS.
- Also search each node’s contents in the Quick Search feature.

OTHER IMPROVEMENTS

- Integrated new three-finger swipe to undo/redo and pinch to copy/paste iPadOS gestures into content editor and WriteMap views.
- Default behaviour of setting the node theme from the content editor now changes the theme for that node only.
- Hid the scrollbars in the WriteMap view for a cleaner visual effect.

- Fixed bug in quick search where the root node could not be selected from the search results.
- Fixed bug where scrolling quick search results would sometimes cause it to close.
- Made it such that no single color should appear more than twice for first 8 H2 nodes.

WriteMapper 2.7 is available as a free update for past WriteMapper customers. New customers can take the free trial for a spin to test out the latest features we released today, by getting the app from the App Store. We hope you'll find these new features useful!
2.6.0
2019-07-25
Getting straight to what's in this update, besides the usual bug fixes and improvements, we're also introducing a brand new feature in this release:

ABSORB CHILD NODES

WriteMapper has had the ability to turn lines of words within a node's contents into children nodes since the app was launched. In this version, we're adding a new feature which allows you to do the reverse — turn nodes into contents.

This helps with generating ideas for writing out the contents of a node's topic, by creating and ordering sub-points in the mind map interface before pulling them all into the parent node. From there, it's a matter of turning those points into complete sentences, and that's that node now taken care of!

You can check it out on your own copy of WriteMapper by right-clicking/long-pressing any node that has child nodes, and selecting the "Absorb Children" option. You can also select the node, and use the Cmd+Shift+A keyboard shortcut.

IMPROVEMENTS & BUG FIXES

- Updated some code package libraries in anticipation of the upcoming iPadOS public release.
- Corrected Header Letter Casing export option to also apply to Header Numbering setting, when set to Decimal.
- Removed the question mark character from file names when saving files.
- Updated autosave message wording on iPad to give clearer information.

We hope you'll find this new feature useful!
2.5.0
2019-06-18
This update is dedicated to bettering our iPad app, focusing on the little things that will help add to the level of productivity you can achieve on the go with iOS. Here's a list of improvements that you'll find in this release:

IMPROVEMENTS
- We made it easier to access the long-press menu of nodes, which can now be triggered with a new keyboard shortcut, Cmd+Return.
- There is now an improved settings menu interface on the iPad, consolidating individual controls into a General Preferences modal.
- A “Save As” option was added, allowing for renaming of the WriteMap file that you're working on rather than just defaulting to the root node's title.
- The status bar in the WriteMap view now uses the vibrancy effect, instead of just a solid color, for a sleeker look.

BUG FIXES
- Factor in the cursor’s width when setting node width while editing a node’s title.
- Fit the contents of settings menus into the visible window while in Split View mode.

QUICK EDIT NODE: You can now edit the contents of a node in a scaled-down editor mode, designed for making it easier to jump into jotting down some words without having to open the full editor. Quick Edit Node is also accessible via a new keyboard shortcut, Ctrl+Cmd+E, on top of each node’s long-press menu.

EXPORT OPTIONS: More granular export configurations are now available in WriteMapper, allowing you to customise how your WriteMap should translate to the exported text document. A new “Export” section has been added to the preferences, from which you can adjust these new settings to your liking.

BUG FIXES
- Applied the “Export Header Numbering” setting to OPML export.

WriteMapper 2.4 is available as a free update for past WriteMapper customers, on all platforms. New customers can take the free trial for a spin to test out the latest features we released today, by getting the iPad app from the App Store.

2.2.0
2019-03-23
We're always looking to make WriteMapper a better version of itself than before. In this update, we focused on improving the robustness of WriteMapper as a productivity app. Here's a few features we've added that'll let you get your work done quicker and easier:

1. SNAPSHOTS
WriteMapper now keeps a backup of a history of your work with this new feature. The five most recent versions of the five most recently saved WriteMaps are saved to Snapshots, which can be accessed from the “Open” button in the intro screen. There also exists the option to remove all Snapshots, if you’re worried about them occupying disk space on your device.

2. EXPORT AS OPML
We’ve added another export format, on top of the five existing ones. Adding OPML format export, with the app already supporting import of OPML files, will enable you to move your work in and out of WriteMapper and use it with other programs that support the format.

3. QUICK SEARCH
Finally, you can now search an entire WriteMap’s node topics at once, and find exactly what you were looking for. Quick Search is accessible from the WriteMap view, in the toolbar’s more options button (•••), and with a keyboard shortcut (Cmd+F).

IMPROVEMENTS
- Added padded clearance of the cursor from the bottom edge of the content editor as the editor auto-scrolls while you type.
- Increased content editor’s maximum font size upwards to 26px.

BUG FIXES
- Fixed a bug where a link’s destination would not show up in WriteMaps created from imported files.
- Prevented source information of images getting lost whenever the content editor was opened/closed.
- Character count in Full Document Preview now does not count spaces and newline characters.
- Set ‘mins’ to singular (‘min’) instead of plural if the estimated read time info is one (1) minute.

We hope you'll find these new features useful!
2.1.1
2019-03-06
Fixed a bug where the Editor Width setting would always be stuck in “Relative”, even if set to “Fixed” in Preferences.
2.1.0
2019-03-02
This update is our follow-up to the amazing start we've had in 2019 with WriteMapper 2. Answering our customers' most highly-requested features, we've packed this update full of new abilities and improvements. Here's what we've added in this release:

MARKDOWN SYNTAX WRITING: You can now use markdown-style syntax to style your writing, such as **bold** or [links](https://writemapper.com). These then get detected by the software, and get automatically converted into the appropriate text format for you.

EXPORT HEADER NUMBERING: There now exists an option to prefix each header with numbering in your exported documents. This can be toggled from the app’s Preferences, where a “Export Header Numbering” option has been added. You can also view how the exported document would look from the Full Document Preview function.

Besides these main features, we also worked on a couple other bug fixes and improvements in this update:
- New setting added to preferences options for choosing between fixed or relative width of the content editor.
- Enabled WriteMap to scroll as a node is dragged to the bounds of the WriteMap’s edges.
- Fixed a bug where imported PNG and GIF images might not be formatted in the right encoding.
- Corrected a typo in the tutorial WriteMap.

WriteMapper 2.1 is available as a free update for past WriteMapper for iPad customers, and new customers can take these new features for a spin with the fully-featured trial. We hope you'll find these new features useful!
2.0.1

- Added adequate margin to last item in full document preview when nodes’ contents are hidden.
- Reduce frequency of IAP modal showing when in trial mode.

- Fixed an undo/redo bug, allowing it to now work with rich components and in the correct historical order.
2.0.0
2019-01-02
Turn your thoughts into things this 2019 with WriteMapper 2 — the outlining app that helps anyone with writing deadlines quickly and easily produce text documents, using mind maps.

We've worked tirelessly through the holiday season to bring you this new release of WriteMapper. In this major update, we've added three of the most-requested features from our customers to the app:

1. FILE IMPORT

Besides exporting, you can now import other filetypes into the WriteMapper app, and work on them as a mind map! For starters, WriteMapper supports import of most of the filetypes it currently exports to, namely Markdown (.md), HTML (.html) and DOCX (.docx) files. Furthermore, we've also included import capabilities for the OPML file format — which is one of the most-asked-for features from our users.

2. CUSTOM HARDWARE KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS

WriteMapper 2 will take your keyboard productivity on the iPad to another level, now that it allows you to set custom keyboard shortcuts. If you prefer another key binding as opposed to the default ones, you can now configure that from the settings menu of the app. This will hopefully help you to do more in less time — and perhaps without your fingers ever needing to leave your keyboard at all.

3. FULL DOCUMENT EXPORT PREVIEW

Get a quick overview of the state of your work in its document form, directly from the WriteMapper app itself with the new full document export preview feature. Besides being great for proofreading, the preview mode also allows you to toggle various modes of exploring your preview, helping you digest your writing quicker and easier than ever before. A handy full document word and character count calculator is also included, which displays that information for you in preview mode.

IMPROVEMENTS & BUG FIXES

Besides that the main features additions detailed above, this update also contains the following list of improvements and bug fixes:

- Added a document picker to the “Import Existing File” option, allowing easier access to file imports.
- Updated default font size setting to be applied in real-time, each time the editor is opened.
- Improved “About WriteMapper” display information and interface.
- Added a “New WriteMap from Node” option to the long-press menus of non-root nodes.
- Updated tutorial WriteMap to also include mentions of recently-developed features.
- Updated in-app purchase interface to adopt Dark Mode if it has been turned on by the user.
- Improved tolerance and decreased press duration required for long-press gestures.
- Corrected a bug where disabled toolbar buttons were erroneously allowed to be tapped.
- Added the option to collapse and expand all nodes to the root node’s long-press menu.
- Fixed issue where orientation change would displace tooltips shown in the content editor and in the intro view.

WriteMapper 2 is available as a free update for past WriteMapper customers, and new users can take the fully-featured free trial for a spin to test out the latest features we've released. We hope you'll find these new features in WriteMapper useful!
1.7.2
2018-11-10
There's a number of bug fixes in this update:

- Fixed node duplication bug, where nodes that were themselves duplicated could not be duplicated again.
- Addressed a bug where node duplication could not successfully integrate with the action history if undone/redone multiple times.
- Corrected bug where undo/redo was not working for certain cases of adding sibling nodes.
- Fixed bug where random colors of H2 level nodes are not replicated when undo/redo is executed adding them.
- Added the missing auto-expand lines keyboard shortcut, available from within the content editor.
- Fixed a bug where using Cmd+E and Cmd+W keyboard shortcuts in quick succession resulted in a botched interface.
- Corrected a bug where WriteMap files were not being added to the Recents menu upon actions like saving or closing.
- Fixed root nodes of new WriteMaps flashing blue when default node color is set to colors other than blue.
1.7.1
2018-11-03
Improvements & Bug Fixes:

- Added keyboard shortcut for Toggle Task Status function, as well as to the menu bar.
- Refined layout to also work for the newly-released iPad Pro models.
- Updated tutorial WriteMap typo under “Use Emojis” node.
- Updated all “Night Mode” references in the apps to use the “Dark Mode” term instead.
1.7.0
2018-10-20
In this update, we focused on improving the interaction experience of WriteMapper.

A major feature addition in this update is the Task Status function. You can now mark each individual node as "done", using this feature. This can be set from the mind map interface (long-press menu), or from the content editor (under the tag menu button). The individual Task Status of each node will then show on left side of each node with a little checkmark indicator icon, so you can continue to use the tilde (~) key keyboard shortcut to see info of all nodes at once.

Another main feature we added in this update is the ability to duplicate nodes. You can now duplicate nodes on a WriteMap, making useful copies of existing nodes. Similarly accessible the long-press menu, you can also use the Cmd+D keyboard shortcut when a node is selected. The action also integrates into the undo/redo action history, so that the workflow continues to make sense.

Last but not least, another feature upgrade we added in this update is the ability to collapse all other nodes except the currently selected one. If you've ever had to deal with an extremely large WriteMap, it can sometimes help to collapse everything else and just focus on a small section of the WriteMap for a bit. This function allows you to just that, and you can access it from the menu shown when long-pressing a node.

Besides those main features, here's a bunch of other improvements we've added to the app:
- Highlight and select the initial default “Title” content of new nodes when creating them.
- Enable tapping on white circle to collapse / expand nodes, to work with Apple Pencil input.
- Corrected the long-press menu options available for the root node.

WriteMapper 1.7 is available as a free upgrade for existing customers. We hope you'll find WriteMapper useful!
1.6.0
2018-09-30
In this update, we focused in making improvements to the document file format: Export behaviour of files have been improved, with MD and HTML files containing images now using image source URL or path. Also, as an add-on from the previous update, we've added plain text export support for proper indentation of nested lists. For the full details of this release, please view the What's New page on our website.
1.5.2
2018-09-03
- Content editor can now handle indented or nested lists, up to 8 levels deep.
- Updated references in tutorial WriteMap to the in-app purchase button.
1.5.0
2018-07-28
In WriteMapper 1.5, we focused on style and formatting improvements. There's quite a number of items in this update, so let's get right to it:

- Improved the styling of the root node, only showing its info when selected, like the other nodes.
- The width of nodes with no children now expand to fit its contents as you type.
- Adjusted the line height of text in the content editor to use the golden typography ratio.
- Improved document metadata styles of exported DOCX files, such as for headings.
- Updated autosave frequency to every five minutes, preventing unnecessary processing from happening.
- WriteMap saving, exporting and copying to clipboard operations now show you visual confirmation when completed.
- Added a random color option for newly-created H2-level nodes. This is enabled by default, and can be set in your Preferences.

We also fixed a couple of bugs in this update:
- Corrected the positioning of the share dialog when exporting a file.
- Fixed a UI bug where the button for in-app purchases would overlap and obscure the toolbar when in Split View.
- Fixed an issue where multiple nested share dialogs would incorrectly appear when export options are tapped in quick succession.
- Corrected an issue where instances of a specific text arrangement would not export correctly to the DOCX format.

For more information, please refer to the What's New page on our website. We hope you'll enjoy using WriteMapper!

WriteMapper is the tool for journaling, blogging, or drafting your next novel. Cleanly displays your outline. Visual elements have imbedded text fields to capture narrative, images, and links. Exports fully formatted (narrative and/or images) documents in the hierarchical form of your map. Free 7 day trial has full capabilities available. Also provides a tutorial and reference manual. Low learning curve, no cost demo, no paywall = no risk.

I enjoyed playing with it, but as I am not a writer, it wasn’t what I needed. Since I can see where it would be a great tool for creatives to capture a linear process, I wanted to write a review to describe its abilities.
loureedtunes,
A great app
This is a real nice and simple app. I am surprised it doesn’t have more downloads and reviews.

It is simple to use and very beneficial to the writer.

It exports in many different formats and also give a nice preview of the entire document.
Luigiskates12,
A great app, but there was a change from what I liked about it before
Hi, this has been a great app so far.

Before, what I really liked about it and found helpful was being able to export the mind map to a “Full Document Preview” and being able to then edit the text of all the content/nodes. This was helpful because in the actual map, I can’t see the full text contained in each node.

I use this format to read through and edit my thoughts, and being able to do that in the Full Document Preview was important for me. But this seems to have been taken away in this version. I would like to see this feature being reinstated, and it would also be nice to have an option to display all of the text contained in the nodes in the mind map (before exporting it).

Thank you.
jchryss,
Nice app
