Saturated siren,
Ascension
I have a friend who has the ascension physical card game he ya rise of vigil and the darkness one which I didn’t even find out where expansions until I started playing this game. It is really good I think the aim could be programmed a little bit better they seem to only go for the best value per turn in most cases without thinking of the long run. For example if they have four tubes and the board is full of heroes to buy and no monsters to kill they will get 2 heavy infantries instead of a mystic because it is more short term value which can lead to them punching the cultist later in the game up to seven times I got it to once. There is a lot of dlc for this game but it is literally the physical releases of the ascension game as well and those are way more expensive per pack so it is more worth it here plus this game was just made for a computer or phone setting with a lot of the effects going off in the background where you don’t have to keep track of them and possibly forget like in the physical version.
rainbownotgay,
Pretty good no brain game
The game is pretty good and a lot of enjoyment can be found in it. That being said it has a few problems. Firstly the online doesnt even exist nobody plays this game online so be ready to either do couch co-op or just play against the ai. The game also puts a lot of its content behind paywalls that being said i have enjoyed the expansions and how poorly implemented they are. As an example of how badly implemented this game is you can turn on 2 expansions and within 5 turns have beaten any opponent due to several ways that you can gain infinite turns without using glitches. The game also has a few bugs. Most of the ones that i have found are related to playing more than 100 cards in a turn. There are also a few card interactions that need to be hammered out. All that being said it is a good looking game that works well for wasting time. I particularly enjoy the games esthetic and the fact that you can break this game and then revel in the games lack of balance. Its kind of like the might and magic games, cosy as hell and extremely unbalanced. Also if you are turned off by the aforementioned pay wall its worth noting that the base deck is perfectly fine on its own. If you want to buy expansions these are the ones i would recommend: return of the fallen, dreamscape, promo pack 3, 4, and 5. I would not recommend buying dawn of champions. The other expansions range from ok to hot garbage.
Iamspoonman,
Marred by mired AI
The card game Ascension is s pretty solid game. It has wonderful synergy between cards and a mechanic that is quick paced and has a good amount of strategic deck building. The gameplay drawback is its ridiculous randomness, particularly when you purchase expansions. At times these expansion sets are reminiscent of playing Chutes and Ladders or Candy Land since you can randomly gain free cards by the dozen. That said, if you are selective with which expansions you buy the game is better balanced. Check board game geek to see which ones are ideal.

The real issue with this isn't the gameplay. It's the slowdown. If the AI gets certain cards, too many cards in hand, or too many cards interacting with each other on the table it grinds to a halt. I've sat and stared for a minute or two waiting for the computer to slog through placing a few cards on the table. In a game where turns last an average of 10 seconds this is truly unforgivable, especially on an iPhone 6. A game as streamlined as Ascension shouldn't consist of 20 minutes staring at nothing and 3 minutes playing. Give this one a pass until playdek does something about the terrible slowdown.

One year later and the game runs just as slow. Still not worth the time it takes to get through a slogged game.
Ghostfire6113,
Unplayable, deleted
I got hit with the slowdown issue that others have spoken of, and the game has become unplayable. It started off with a little stuttering here and there, and slowly progressed to where the AI laying down a single card basically brought it to a screeching halt. I tried the various fixes and work arounds on the forums, but eventually nothing worked; even reinstalling the game and only using the base decks was barely helpful.
My phone is, maybe, 8 months old, other games (that are far more complex graphically and otherwise) run perfectly fine, and I have plenty of space left.
Some of the threads from past users suggest this has been going on for at least 2 years, so I guess I shouldn’t hold my breath for a fix.
Also, before the slowdown demon got me, I noticed the shuffling was near nonexistent; you could pretty much predict what cards were coming next after a few turns. And the fanatic/event trophy spamming got a bit boring after awhile. I understand it’s part of the game, but it’s another RNG mess that detracts from overall strategies; one fanatic banish per turn is more than adequate, after that it’s just silly. I’m not interested in crushing someone because I got the right event with the right amount of combat points at the right time. Loses its appeal quickly.
Capn Krusteaz,
Not without issues, but worth it.
This is the first application that’s left a significant enough impression on me to leave a review. It’s not without faults, the game can eat through your battery fairly quickly, it’s laggy and not without bugs, but there hasn’t been another game that I’ve felt is worth the money I’ve put into it. The expansions add a fair amount of content and even though it wouldn’t be a game for everyone I don’t think there’s another game that I’ve found where I would consistently play and enjoy it as much as this. I find it relaxing trying to get a perfect solo game in against a CPU and getting just the right cards to get an “infinite turn” that eventually crashes the app and needing to start over again. If they can fix some of the more glaring issues and optimize it to run a bit better I’m sure there will be plenty more people who would like this game as much as I do. (Please return the capacity to buy “take another turn” cards from the void in offline though)
bardryn,
**updated** May 23rd update makes this unplayable
****Update June 26th*********
The developers have fixed the worst bugs introduced with the May 23rd update. I’m getting used to the newer aesthetics, but it’s still more susceptible to internet lag than the older version, and the loading screens are still longer. I enjoy the game itself enough to keep playing, and hope the developers keep improving it.
********************************
The update that went out May 23rd makes this app almost unusable. Games take too long to load, and game play is laggy. The cards are too big, and the deck and discard piles are too small - it makes it difficult to drag cards to your deck or discard pile. It uses more battery life than before. This used to be one of the few games I could play all day without draining my battery, but not anymore. Nothing about this update is an improvement. It makes me sad, because I loved this game, and spent quite a bit of money on it. Hopefully they will fix the issues soon...
SimpleThinking,
Worth it! I Promise!
My wife bought me the physical Acension game this past Christmas. We played it together and I loved it. Reminded me a lot of D.C., but with their own twist. I came across the app version of Acension while at work (a boring day) and decided to download it. Within a day of playing this awesome game/app, I bought all the expansions and everything for 20 bucks! Now I’m playing this non-stop! I love it. The only thing that I wish they would change or add feature wise, is the ability to increase the “honor” pool past 240. I feel like it really limits your time to enjoy the combinations of playing different expansions and getting through all the cards. If possible, make the honor pool less restrictive so that way players really have a chance to build a crazy deck when playing several expansions at once. One final note! I’m looking forward to other Ascension expansions being added to the app. Keep up the awesome work!
MamajpMo,
Purchases disappear and no support
Over the last four years, I have purchased every expansion for myself and another player. Recently, I got a new phone, and reached out when I could not pull up to the games that I have on going with other players. Imagine my surprise one on my old phone, the other player in the family had all of the decks, again on a phone that they did not use, and on my new phone, at least all the decks do not show, even on several gams I have been in for over a year. I reached out and received garbage directions that have not worked for over four attempts. I have made every attempt to reach out to Toby and their customer service who takes about a week to respond, since these are time sensitive games, those games have expired due to this company’s lack of critical customer support. All. Decks were purchased for two players, which is more expensive than purchasing the game. Support shouldn’t take a month for basic steps, and they know this is an issue, as evidently others have experienced, and reported the same. Waiting to exhale, but I do not expect customer care or product support.
Jaycrabtree83,
Love StoneBlade stuff
Great game, but they changed something that makes me switch to another app constantly when I swipe certain ways. That can be incredibly frustrating, considering it completely kicks you out of the game and you have to sign back in. Wish it would go right back to the game. I feel like it used to be better. I don’t recall this much anger about the app when I used to play years ago.

Sometimes it’s a lengthy process to find a game, as the player base has dwindled. I’m sure the bugs, that came with whatever update was responsible for this, dried it up even more.

Would be much better if Honor Pool could be increased for online games. The option is there for offline games, so it shouldn’t be asking for too much. For that reason, the physical copy is much better. The game just starts getting really interesting in the last few rounds.

If you are just starting, I suggest not joining or creating any “10-minute” games. They can be frustrating, and not nearly as fun. Most of the ones I play are in the 3+ day range. That gives you plenty of time for other things. The game could be played in 10 minutes, if you are both online. But, it gives you both room to breathe.

Buy the physical copies of the game. I highly suggest them. The app is nice because it handles the shuffling and the calculations, but the lack of game options cripples it. In my opinion. Which this is.
Maaikemaaike,
Worst redesign ever!!!
Update: I haven't played for days because the update disgusted me so much. Tried it again today, I am never gonna get used to this. I even got a headache from the absurdly bright colors. For at least 5 years I have plays this game daily, playing at least 5 games online simultaneously and I bought almost all the expansions. But now I am really done. There is no excuse for a game giving me a headache. I will keep the game on my iPad in the hope that the redesign will be rolled back or at least toned down considerably, but I'm not playing anymore or buying expansions until that happens.

Why was the order of the militia and heavy infantry cards etc in my deck switched? Why doesn't it show the whole construct cards anymore? Why are the constructs covering the cards in my hand on my 9.7 inch screen??? Why the blindingly bright color at the top? Why doesn't it show 6 online games anymore but only 4 at a time? Why is everything so slow now? Was the old design so wrong that EVERYTHING had to be changed? I have been playing this game for 5 years at least, I think I will just delete it from my iPad. The end of an era.
