Description

Camera Heart Rate Variability is the first app that lets you record, plot and export time and frequency domain Heart Rate Variability Features - without requiring any heart rate monitor.

Camera HRV uses a technique called photoplethysmography (PPG for short), which consists in detecting changes in blood volume during a cardiac cycle, by illuminating the skin and measuring changes in light absorption. PPG has become quite a popular non-invasive method for extracting physiological measurements such as heart rate and oxygen saturation. However, most applications today focus simply on heart rate or respiration rate.

Supported devices for the camera measurement: iPhones 5, 5S, 6, 6S, 6+, 6S+, SE, 7, 7+, 8, 8+, X, XS, XS Max, XR, 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, 12 mini, 12, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max, 13 mini, 13, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max

Camera HRV can assess cardiac autonomic regulation through quantification of sinus rhythm variability. Since HRV aims at quantifying autonomic regulations, it can be used as marker of sympathetic or parasympathetic predominance, and therefore become relevant in many applications. In athletes for example heavy training is responsible for shifting the cardiac autonomic balance toward a predominance of the sympathetic over the parasympathetic drive, and HRV analysis attempts to quantify this shift.

Other applications span from stress monitoring, assessment of pathological conditions and even emotional regulation during financial decision-making.

Main Features:
- extracts, plots, stores and exports heart rate, rr-intervals, time and frequency domain heart rate variability features (AVNN, SDNN, rMSSD, pNN50, LF, HF, LF/HF)
- configurable time window for feature extraction (30 seconds to 5 minutes)
- automatic RR-interval correction
- event annotation
- comparison between up to 3 recordings lets you get a better understanding of autonomic regulation and sympathetic/parasympathetic activity under different contexts in a glance
- data export/storage on iTunes and Dropbox (csv format, exports heart rates, rr intervals, events and computed features). Data export needs to be performed from the history -> recording view, by clicking on the export button (bottom left).
- integration with the Health app (writes Heart Rate and Heart Rate Variability)

StarsGirl13,
Export Error
When trying to export the data via email after selecting email the app closes by itself and I am not able to export the data. Please help.
Practicaljoker,
Huge Improvement
The new version is a HUGE improvement in signal acquisition. Works much better and has more consistent analysis. I tested this against a laboratory grade HRV instrument and it was quite close. It would be a good app addition for lay people to state “normal” levels and explain the different features and how they impact health and HRV. Would also be nice to choose which studies to graph together to show trend.

This is better than most consumer HRV. If you are serious about measuring you HRV and want it to be easy and accurate, you need this. Very reasonable price too.
myhearthealth,
Stopped working
I used this app for the last year and really liked it but in the last month the timer has stopped working so it only tracks number of beats per minute and nothing else. Maybe it needs to be updated to keep up with the iPhone updates?
CCJayAthens,
Stopped working, red circle doesn’t appear
I paid for this and a few months later it just stopped working. I can’t speak to the science behind it but it did work as sold for those months. Low rating is due to how it stopped working and the lack of support to fix.

I uninstalled and reinstalled and still not working. Cleaned my camera. Re read directions, googled. Nothing.

App developer says we can tweet him, I only use Twitter for work, so. Maybe they will see this and reply? FX.
Craig 55,
Not fully functional, it seems
I get a "HRV not computed due to poor signal quality" with every attempt, no matter what I do. It would help if I had more information about what that message means.
Jussa0026,
I want to love it...
I was excited to hear about the accuracy of this app, especially for the cost and ability to use my iPhone to measure HRV. However, no matter what I've tried, the HRV seems very difficult to measure. I tried 12 times and followed the directions provided by the developer on the website and it still won't work. I feel I have wasted my time and money trying to get it to work, which has probably changed my HRV in the morning due to frustration (try as I might not to become annoyed). I think trouble shooting advice should be part of the FAQ - otherwise I have to search a blog not only to figure out how to get an accurate reading but also to learn how to interpret the data. I'm sure the companion tracking app helps with that, but not if the program cannot calculate my HRV.
Everynicknamebavom,
Timer won’t start
I have used this twice and now the timer doesn’t start. This is beyond frustrating.
E1D1,
Seems to be great, but
Seems to work well and sooo much nicer than having to put on my chest bluetooth monitor. But I can't figure out most of what is measured and shown - app is in desperate need of help buttons on each screen to explain what its showing.

I first learned of HRV at the Mayo clinic as they used a breathing app that they tuned for me, while having me hooked up to a bunch of sensors like skin temp, but key was that they tracked my breathing relative to my heart frequency to get them to track, without the breathing app my reading were totaly out of sync while i tried to relax. Then on the first redo with the app guiding when i breath in, hold, breath out, hold to total about 10second loops my readings were tracking very well, little more fine tuning to find what they called my resonant freq and i had app setting to use to calm down my body. So figured this app would be good to monitor the progress, but unfortunately it was not as simple to see as mayo setup that super imposed a breathing graph on too of the hrv graph. I really want give this app 5 stars, but can't make heads or tails of most of the data so have it a generous 4, hoping this changes soon as there is real genius in the app and its camera usage model, and would totally merit 5 if it can help the average person use its data to improve calmness,...
Mensa bound,
Not what I expected!!!
I wanted an hrv app that doesn't need the Bluetooth chest strap and be able see weekly and monthly trends of rMSSD data. This app does give you a rMSSD value but there is no avg. or any type of trend that would allow you to see your recovery for future training. The app description describes being able to compare 3 recordings, but it also states it creates plots of the data implicating more than three data points. When trying to find instructions for how to use the app you are provided technical info on the accuracy of the data the app collects, not user instructions. The app works, but the user interface is clumsy, you are provided with data that is not organized in a manner for easy comparison for the purpose of reaching training goals, and user instructions are very minimal for a very un-intuitive app.
Evidence based police,
Impressive app
I am a cardiologist exploring new ways to use smartphone as a diagnostic tool. This app is one of the best example of “iPhone as diagnostic tool” I have found. The design of this software is more sophisticated than other heart rate devices in the app store. The smoothing algorithm with cubic spline method is ingenious. The programmer validated his HRV measurement with validated clinical instrument and this enhanced the trustworthiness of his method. One small piece of advice: Bland-Altman plot and paired t-test should be used to compare the camera HRV with the clinical gold standard measurement. Overall, I am really impressed by its sophistication. I wish you good luck in your future project.
