GlueDog09,
Must have app for all DMs
This app is a must have app for all DMs everywhere. I started a long-play campaign 4 years ago, before I had known about this. What this looked like: everyone was gathered around the table with their character sheets and notebooks, I had a 1.5” binder and a 3 subject spiral notebook. This was sort of impractical, as whenever I said something, my players had to write notes and respond in character at the same time. Then one of them brought their laptop, no notebook, no dice, just the laptop. We were like, “oh no, did something happen to your character sheet? Did you forget to bring dice?” When she turned her laptop around and clicked one of the buttons in those boxes that roll dice, we flipped out. It was the most fancy thing we had seen sense pdf character sheets. After that, we moved our campaign to dnd beyond, and it made more of a difference to me the DM then to the players. First off, they don’t need to take notes, I can just put the info into the campaign notes and there is nothing else we need to do. It also greatly improved my efficiency to create homebrew and run the campaign. We got through twice as much of my story in the second half when compared to the first half. It makes D&D easy and fun for beginners. We got a new player recently, and what usually takes months to learn, they understood in just a few sessions. So, in short, everyone. D&D players and GMs, get this app, use the website, do D&D better and easier with D&D beyond.
Pb9k,
Great tool for all ranges of players!
I am a pretty veteran dnd player and had a lot of doubts about using dnd beyond, mostly because of having to by the source books again from them.

After agreeing to dm a campaign with 8 people I knew my usual all paper setup wouldn’t work as I would have no clue of what my players character sheets had on then to balance encounters and such. I needed an online source to hold all their sheets. Roll20 would have worked but I would have had to insert everything about every characters sheets into their roll20 sheets as they did not know how to. After figuring out you can use unpublished homebrew in your own campaigns with a master teir subscription, I decided to try it out for a month and after some success with setting up some characters I ended up also buying a couple source books on their. I have to say it was a wonderful decision.

For vets. It’s a great way to keep track of everything and make sure even if players lose their paper sheet they’ll be able to play. And for new players, everything lays itself out to you and I wouldn’t get right out of the get go trying to make homebrew, but telling people what dice to roll and all the modifiers it gets right there is so helpful.
ZombieChef,
D&D “Right at”
D&D Beyond doesn’t exceed or go “Beyond” what one would expect from the official online platform for source materials. It does a decent job of providing resources, but as I write this review while it is still early morning and I’m trying to catch my breath on the stair master I can think of 2 things I wish it did.

First, I wish when editing my character I could see the feats, spells, races, etc. for the content I have bought. The content could be greyed out, hyperlinked, or a combination of the two but it could withhold the description as well as prohibit me from using it in the character builder, however this would allow me to know what I’m missing and would actually prompt to purchase the content versus not knowing what I don’t know.

Second, every now and then there are options to “update” the digital content I have purchased. You aren’t required to update the content but it would be great if there was a log list or description of what the updates are? Many of us have encountered digital upgrades in many forms, such as phones, games, tv software, the list goes on but sometimes those upgrades are later regretted do to losing functionality or content. DnDB knows the changes the update will make, just let the user have a small window into why we should update.
Canaan Collins,
Great help, but there are a few problems in Beta
So I love the D&D beyond website for making characters for my campaigns, but since the app is still in it’s sort of early stages, there are some (but not many) problems I’ve had, more or less just tedious little things.
One thing, not currently able to edit anything on a completed character, such as their inventory, gold amount, notes, etc. The only way to do it is to click the website link to do it from there. It isn’t much of a problem, just would be easier and smoother if you didn’t have to go to load the website to edit something or add XP.
Another thing is there are a few bugs if you try to create a character on the phone sometimes. I can’t recall what I was doing exactly, but while helping a player create a character, the option they chose pretty much froze the whole process, and then closed the app. When they got back on, a little of their work was saved, but the past 5-10 minutes of work wasn’t.
Outside of those problems, I think it is a great app and is still very helpful for running campaigns so no one has to carry around the paper version! Can’t wait for the app to progress even further!
The Radio Song,
Character Creation Issue
So essentially I normally used the website, at some point I got on as usual and tried to make a character sheet for a campaign however, when I clicked to make one it didn’t load at all and I even tried to just access my already created characters but, it still didn’t work. I got on the app, while I could access my already created character sheets, I for some reason still couldn’t make a new one. I’ve tried and tried and I’m not even sure if it’s an internet issue or not anymore, either way I would still like for this to be fixed as I’ve actually enjoyed making characters on dnd beyond and the way things have worked originally, but if I can’t make a character sheet then it removed a lot of the enjoyment. I love dnd beyond and it’s well done in my opinion but, I would love for this issue to be remedied, thank you.

P.S.
(Sorry if there’s a chance this came off as aggressive I don’t mean for it to- I genuinely do love dnd beyond and that’s exactly why I wrote this, so I can keep using it! Once again, thank you!)
Jackwhitch101,
Please Bring it Back!!!
Ok first I love this app, this website, and this hobby in general, but developers PLEASE HEAR MY CRY!!! In the old version of this app you could tap on empty space on any page to bring up a list of pages at the bottom of the screen and easily swipe through to the one you want. I would love for this to come back it was so convenient. Yes i know about the table of contents button at the too but it just isnt as easy to use. Secondly AND EVEN MORE ANNOYING. If you go to a page and it has a link to a different page (ex spell description, effect discription, or character details) and click the back button instead of going to the previous page you are instead taken back to the main library. ALL THE WAY BACK then even worse once you click on that same book again and instead of taking you to the table of contents you are taken back to the description page so you have to suffer the annoying process of searching through the table of contents drop down and finding where you were. To let the reader understand how strongly I feel about this just know that I came here with a love for dnd on my mind and initially had it set as five stars, half way through the review 4 stars, then finally at the current mark 3 stars.
lissegie,
Simple in the best ways :)
Listen I absolutely love the website layout and the customization settings for character sheets. The app is pretty different in layout compared to the app (something everyone should assume when getting an app instead of the browser) I was a little confused at first but quickly learned to find my way through the app. I believe it’s made my dnd experience smoother as well especially to look at the other players in the campaign. Before I’d have to have separate tabs open on my laptop and constantly refresh to look after my party but now it’s pretty simple. I’ve been on and off dnd for about two years now and I’m very happy for this new hobby that I’ve fallen in love with. Using the app on the IPad is the best btw I feel like Edna from the incredibles w her lil remote lol. Uhhh only criticism is I wish there was more customization for player sheets but that’s only cause I’m a sucker for those things but it doesn’t change how smooth and fast this app runs.
nasa is out of this world,
Getting better
I wrote the below a week or two ago and I can now eat some crow. Extras finally shows your pets and that is amazing and awesome.

It's great for what it is, which is a massive compendium of content. But there's this crazy place called Google that does the same thing... just not in one place. Here's what's broken: Searching for multiple words takes the first word of the search and ignores everything else. Searching also fails when using an apostrophe (like in the word Tasha's) and returns no results. Lastly (and most importantly), the fact that you can't create or level up characters within the app and are taken to the website breaks utilization if you have no internet. Who designs a core feature for a tabletop game that REQUIRES internet? As someone who's written software for almost 20 years, there's no reason for this.

Everyone complaining about a lack of content: Shut up. While the app has issues, content isn't free and creators should be paid. You are free to grab the SRD (free) and create your own homebrew content (free).
runaway11189,
I like the app but I wish I had like a teaching class
I like the app I made three characters and had fun making them. But me and my son are having a hard time going through the beginners guide to play it is kind of confusing trying to go through everything. I am dyslexic so I have a hard time reading.
But my son tries to do it the best he can but we keep getting confused how to play I would like the app to kind of have a walk-through like watching the arrows point to what you use how to use the monsters and how you be a dungeon master kind of like a beginners class I think the app would be great if it had that setting have like it to talk to you or allows your phone to read it to you. And how to use the dungeon master books the campaigns in a protective way like have a one shot that the phone app helps you guys through it. I know I might be asking a little too much but for someone that their son really wants to playI think that would be a good way to handle it
kinglynight,
Just getting into the hobby, then 4 stars
I don’t want to buy a digital copy of books I already own so that I can use this app… I know you hear it a lot, but I just wanted to use this app as a bit of a character creator and maybe some of the other functions but all of the character creator stuff is locked behind buying the players handbook. It is a bit more frustrating that all of the classes and subclasses information can be found online already with very little effort for free anyway. I was actually going to buy the digital copy in the marketplace when I got an error, I would like to thank the server error for saving me some money.
I am sure this is great for someone getting into the hobby, but for people who have all the physical supply already it is a tall ask.
An idea could be to allow access for all of the feats, classes, sub-classes and whatnot to be available but to restrict the items or some other feature so people could still experiment with your character builder without immediately being hamstrung… at least put the player handbook stuff in there is it really that big a deal to hide the various cleric subclasses behind a paywall?
