Description

Duffy provides quick access to your step count directly on your Apple Watch face as a complication.

I was surprised to find that a steps complication wasn’t included on Apple Watches out of the box. Being a veteran iOS developer, I decided to build one in my spare time. I really loved my prototype version and thought there were more people who would love it too. So I put in the extra effort to release it to the App Store for everyone! Duffy is completely free, has no ads, and is even open source so if you’re also a developer, you can help me enhance it.

Duffy is a simple app, but it will probably turn into the most used app on your Apple Watch. No more opening the Activity app and scrolling around to find your steps. It’s now available at a glance.

Duffy is more than just an elegant Apple Watch complication. Use the full watch app for easy access to your steps, flights climbed and distance travelled for today and the past week. Set a daily steps goal and be notified on your watch when you reach it. The companion iPhone app provides the same access to your steps, flights and distance on a much larger, easier-to-read surface while also allowing you to dig deeper into your data to see trends and statistics over time.

Duffy reads the steps, flights climbed, distance travelled, and activity energy from your iPhone and Apple Watch from the Health app (via the HealthKit API).

This version adds improved complication updating to Duffy. Many core components have been refactored from the ground up for better efficiency and reliability.

Viewing your historical steps data is now even easier. In the phone app, I’ve added new trend and average lines to the chart to more clearly display your progress. There’s also a new Summary section that puts your average in context with you minimum and maximum step count for a time period. On the watch, I’ve added a simple line chart so you can easily parse your last few days of steps.

I also redesigned the complication on the X-Large watch face to display progress.

* Now includes a fix to remove the word "STEPS" from the small complication

I am currently working on the Home Screen Widget and it will be available in the next release. Sorry for the delay...

LAF361,
The step counter that you have been missing
Imagine my shock when I get my Apple Watch and the activity app is so difficult to customize and does not even have a way to make one of the three rings represent your step goal for the day. Coming from a Fitbit, I was very disappointed that the step count was so hidden on the Apple Watch. Duffy solves that problem. I wish it updated instantly by connecting directly to the step counter on the watch itself. It appears to sync with the health app instead. I had to adjust my settings so that my health app took steps data only from my Apple Watch, because Duffy would have a different count than the watch’s activity app. Thanks to the developers for filling the step count void.
AppKitten,
Awesome App thats Almost Perfect
I didn't want complexity or excess. All I wanted was a simple, READABLE display on my apple watch face that showed the step count for the day so I can see it by just raising my wrist. The built in Activity app requires too much navigation. (Shame on Apple) "Duffy" fits this desire perfectly. It does one thing so not surprisingly it does it well. Duffy displays step count clearly, in large easy to read text directly on my watch face in whatever location I select. (I have it on the center so its the largest text possible.) I don't have to fiddle with it or trip over excess features to see what I want. 1 star off for two reasons: 1) Duffy isn't always realtime, there's often a short delay, 2) Ever so often I want the real-time count so I tap go to the screen to hit "refresh". It updates immediately to the most current step count but the updated count isn't immediately reflected on my watch face. Sometimes it won't synch up for several minutes after refresh... Minor issue since the delay isn't long but still. Otherwise its the best complication design for step counts (and only step counts) that I've found. Good Job!
EZE Ruthless,
Fixes Apple’s oversight
Apple’s laughably glaring oversight—a watch based on fitness with no native way to display your step count on any of dozens of watch faces—is solved by Duffy. With this app, you can see your step count at a glance (you know: the feature the watch should have had built-in from the time you open the box). Equally importantly: I will always support developers who utilize the “Tip Jar” instead of foisting yet another annoying “subscription fee” on us. And the privacy policy? Clearly states that the developer doesn’t collect ANY personal info from the app.

Ethical developer with, great app—what are you waiting for? Get it!
MrSenes,
Great feature Apple should have included...but...
I’ve tried a couple step counters that include the option to include steps as a complication on my series 5. This app is definitely the most accurate I’ve found, however very often ill look down to see that the number on the complication hasn’t changed when I know I’ve taken quite a few steps since the last reading. Usually you can open the app and after a time it’ll update, sometimes quickly sometimes it takes a while.

The first night I had the app at 12:45am I looked down to see the step count on the complication hadn’t reset from the previous count which was around 11:30pm. I understand that Apple restricts how often complications can update but even considering that, an hour seems a kinda long wouldn’t you say?

I’ve rated as 3 stars, knocking one off because of how inconsistent the updating appears to be and the other because sometimes even when I open the app it’ll take 20 seconds or more to update in the app (on the watch).

This is a much needed solution & I understand that Apple’s restrictions limit how fast it can update but there’s gotta be a creative way to work around this.
mbourgon,
Shows steps on your watch. Does it exceptionally well
This makes it easy to see steps on the watch. As a bonus, the app on the phone shows some useful metrics (past week, flights of stairs, etc). Honestly, the reason I got this is that I want to know my steps as per Apple health not what it thinks they are (like Pedometer++, which is what I was using before). I’m using an app to lower my insurance cost, and that one doesn’t care what pedometer thinks, it wants the Apple health number.

My one wish would be a widget, but it’s far as I’m concerned this app is perfect as it is. “Do one thing, exceptionally well“ thanks, sir!

Shows your steps on Apple watch face
As a dedicated fitbit enthusiast I was shocked that your steps didn't show on the watch face natively. This app answers this deficiency. It is not exact as the exercise app doesn't update that frequently. I love it 💛

I wrote that December 2019. I have Duffy as the middle complication on my infograph modular watch face as large as I can. Duffy does what Apple should have done originally. Activity is too complicated when all you want is steps, like, oh, the other fitness trackers. Also, when I had a probable, Patrick was so helpful. Still a happy user!! 😊
EB724,
Finally fixed what I was missing from my old Fitbit!
I share your frustration that Apple did not recognize people’s desire to have steps and flights climbed right on the watch face… it’s way too much trouble to get to that info through Apple:( Thank you so much for creating this app… what a huge difference it makes in motivation for me… it’s a game changer! Now I have the best of both worlds… the key info that was easily accessible on Fitbit with the quality of an Apple watch.🙏 Love it!!
KM-NM,
Good idea in theory
This app does exactly what it says it does, though that may be misleading. It does indeed read your step count from the Health app and display the result on your watch face in the form of a complication. That is fine.
However, my two issues with this app are:
1) The Health app refreshes its step count slower than the Activity app on your phone, which refreshes its step count slower than the Activity app on your watch. Duffy reads the slowest of these apps. If it could read the activity app on your phone or watch, that would be much better.
2) The complication itself does not refresh often (unless you open the app; but the whole point is to not have to do this!)
These two facts leave the Duffy complication's step count often thousands of steps behind, especially while walking.
So it gets three stars: One because every app has at least one star, one more for being a good idea, and another one for being free. But no more than that because, in practice, the app is often so behind that it becomes useless.
Hunafish,
Works Perfectly
This app works seamlessly with my Apple Watch. I had wanted my watch face to show steps, but not all my exercise rings because on my days off it would make me feel guilty that I didn’t work out. However I still want to get my steps in on my exercise days off. I don’t use my iPhone to track steps because I don’t carry it with me while at work - so my watch is more accurate. Now I can see my step count on my watch face but not my exercise rings! Great app!

Best Step Tracker Apple Watch complication
I use an Apple Watch to track my fitness and I wanted to find a 3rd Party app to display step count on the Watch face so I didn’t have to keep opening up my activity app. Most pedometer apps out there do have complications but it’s akin to a circle that gets filled in as you make your goal. I wanted an actual number displayed that refreshes as I increase my step count. Duffy has this and it works perfectly-it’s a simple app that does what it sets out to do. Other step apps try to do too much and miss the mark.
