Version history

4.3.3

Minor bug fix update:

Fixed a UI bug that might occur when navigating to the Calendar then Day View then tapping on a workout and dismissing.

Fixed a background crash that might occur on the watch app.

Added better support for the Stress Chart for users using Voice Over.

A few other minor fixes.

Thanks!

4.3.2
2023-10-14
The iPhone Day Summary and Recovery Exertion and Sleep Widgets now show Sleep Performance score instead of hours of sleep to match everywhere else in the app.

Also it's been asked many many times and although I don't agree 100% with it, I have added the ability in the More tab to adjust the Sleep Debt Threshold, the hours of sleep that is used to calculate sleep debt. This used to be hard coded to 7.5, but now can be adjusted from 5.0 hours to 12.0 hours. Adjusting your Sleep Debt Threshold will not only adjust your Sleep Debt, but also affect Target Sleep and Target Bedtime since Sleep Debt is factored into your Target Sleep (need).

Added Tempur-Pedic® Sleeptracker-AI® as a sleep tracker you can chose in the more tab (select Sleeptracker).

A few other fixes and optomizations.

Thanks!

Quick performance and bug fix update.

4.2.3
2023-09-28
Added an all new Recovery Exertion Sleep Watch Widget! (rectangular).

Added a Setting on the watch where you can remove a workout type that you don't want Athlytic to save a Cardio Fitness sample for.

The line chart for workouts has been redesigned.

Added new 14 tags! They are: CPAP, Remove Work, Dairy, Iron, Multivitamin, Family Time, Friend Time, Late Screen Time, Cold Bedroom, Warm Bedroom, Ashwagandha, Junk Food, Sugar, and Bad Weather.

Some fixes:

FINALLY found a way to remove the X button on the top left during a workout in watchOS 10!

Fixed the in-workout screen which I think Apple made vertical by default, so this should make it go back to horizontal which I think works better for workouts.

Fixed some clipping of text on Watch Widgets for users still on watchOS 9.

Fixed an issue where the Ultra's Action button might open to the past workout screen.

Fixed the Blood Oxygen and Heart Rate Watch Widgets from truncating the max value text on the Modular Ultra watch face.

Fixed (hopefully) a crash when tapping on a past workout on the watch.

Thanks!
Gary
4.2.2
2023-09-21
New watch design style to match watchOS 10! Apple now prefers vertical scrolling via the digital crown (as opposed to horizontal scrolling). The home screen's background color will be the color of your Recovery, whereas the detail screens will be the color of the associated metric, e.g. Exertion's background color will match the level of Exertion, Sleep Performance etc.

The Recovery Watch Widget is now unlocked if you aren't using Athlytic Pro...sorry I mistakenly locked in when porting the ClockKit Complications to WidgetKit Widgets.

Also the Recovery Watch Circular Widget has been slightly updated.

Also from 4.2:

Big Fall Update!

The Energy Charts in the iPhone app are now tappable, i.e you can tap on them to see your Energy Burned and Consumed.

Many of the Apple Watch Complications have been updated with a refreshed design which also includes more options. For Example, the HRV Complication now also has a circular and corner design showing your current HRV and your range today. Same for the Heart Rate complication, Blood Oxygen, and Energy Complications. I encourage you just to play around with the different watch faces and experiment to see all the new variations!

Also an all new Target Sleep and Target Bed Time Complication on the watch and Widget on iPhone!

Many other bug fixes and optimizations!

Thanks!

The Dashboard should now accommodate users who have display zoom turned on.

Added a check to prevent you from being able to set, for example, HR Zone 5 min below HR Zone 4 min, which was causing crashes. The zones cannot overlap now.

On the Recovery screen your current HRV and RHR are color coded based on whether they are above or below baseline. Thanks Feez! =)

A few other minor fixes.

When version 4.0 was released, you might have asked yourself why the Recovery widget as well we the Recovery and Sleep Performance screens on the iPhone App were still horizontal bars. The reason is because I totally forgot about them! =) So they now are rings as well for uniformity.

Also users with small iPhones using larger text sizes should not see clipping on the dashboard anymore.

Also fixed a bug that might occur when you tapped on Calendar -> Day -> Workout that would prevent the Workout from being displayed.

Some other minor bug fixes and improvements.

Thanks!
Gary
4.0.3
2023-07-25
Just a few minor updates:

Added Golf and Equestrian Sports as available workout types on the watch to start.

When you tap on Recovery, the redundant coaching that was there before (from when Recovery was the home screen) has been removed in favor of an explanation of how your Recovery was calculated (similar to what was always there if you tapped on the blue ? button on the right of Recovery.

If you have no sleep data at all, i.e. it looks like you don't wear your watch to sleep, the coaching at the top of the dashboard will not always say missing sleep.

Fixed some background color issues when using light mode.

In the Workouts and Calendar Tab, if you navigate down the navigation stack, i.e. to review your workout then tap the Workout Tab icon again, you will be taken back to the home workout screen. Thanks Feez! =)

Thanks!

Quick update just to fix an issue for users who use sleep tracking other than the Apple Watch but do select it as your preferred sleep tracker in Settings. Now it should work as it always has where Athlytic will look for any sleep data if your preferred sleep tracker (Apple Watch by default) has no sleep data.

Also for users who are using larger text sizes on their iPhone the today dashboard view should scale better now.

Thanks for the reports!
Gary

Also from 4.0:

Welcome to Athlytic 4.0!

The major part of this update features an all new Dashboard home screen for the Today tab. As I continued to build features, I thought a need became necessary to see all your most important metrics at a glance. So this new Dashboard will show you your Recovery, Sleep, Exertion, and Energy as well as your Health Metrics and your Daily Stress on one home screen. You can tap on any of the metrics to go to their respective detail screens.

The Dashboard at the top also features coaching at the top that you will find more holistic and will take account of where you are in the day. Its easier if you just try it and you'll see what I mean. =)

The Health Tab has also been removed since it's tap-able from the home screen and makes room for a new More Tab to make Settings easier to access from any other screen.

Also:

Added Stress to the Day View (tap on the calendar to see any day's Stress!).

Fixed a bug where the heart rate line chart would show strange renderings when using the Nike Run Club app.

Fixed an issue where Instagram (Facebook) implemented a rule where apps are required to have an ID to be able to share to IG....now you can share to IG stories again. Thanks Facebook! =(

Subtle UI refresh to Recovery vs Exertion Chart

Other areas in the app and widgets Recovery and Sleep are now rings as well.

Some changes to try and resolve issues with Sleep Consistency and Target Sleep when traveling between time zones.

Many more minor bug fixes and optimizations!

Thanks!
Gary

You can now tap to hide the coaching at the top of the Dashboard. It should stay hidden until the coaching changes.

Also added voice over support for the Recovery, Exertion etc. buttons on the dashboard.

Outdoor Swims should now show a map of the swim.

Added RingConn as a sleep tracker you can select in Settings.

A few other minor bug fixes and improvements.

3.7.1
2023-05-16
Quick update to fix a few bugs:

(1) If you have the AW Ultra's Action button set up to start a workout, it should now start the correct workout type.
(2) Some UI fixes for users who use larger accessibility text sizes
(3) There will now be an alert to tell you to udpate your Apple Watch App if its not the same version as the iPhone
(4) Recovery widgets now correctly respect if you have ignore Mindfulness HRV turned on in settings.

Also from version 3.7:

Tons of new workout types on the watch!! Many have asked for additional Workout Types Supported on the watch, this update adds really too many types of new workouts to mention here. There is a new workout UI/UX, the workouts you see when you start a workout are sourced from your past workouts (only during the past 7 days since that's all Apple allows to query), if you don't have any, you'll see a default list. But you can also tap on More Workouts to see additional workout types.

It also permitted me to include a long asked for feature: support for both indoor and outdoor running and walking!

New Feature! In-Workout Exertion Monitoring! Now below Effort during a workout is an indicator of whether you are below, within, or above your Target Exertion for the day!

A new UI for choosing your Training Goal with descriptions of each.

Red Recovery has been renamed "Fatigued" instead of "Overtrained."

Recovery has been slightly tweaked, which should result in more greens and reds and less yellow. Note this change is not retroactive and will only update Recoveries going forward unless you uninstall and reinstall.

Added weekly HRV and RHR charts under Recovery on the watch.

Added Withings as a Sleep Tracker.

Better support for Always On Watch Face during a workout, however it only updates every minute. This is something I think is related to a bug in the Apple Watch I am currently exploring and trying to solve.

When you set custom heart rates zones the Weekly Cardio Load chart in Trends will update to show the new zone numbers.

Some other minor bug fixes and optimizations.

Thanks!

3.6.1
2023-04-03
Minor update to correct some UI issues with the new Watch App Redesign. Also from the big 3.6 update:

This update include a major new feature, Stress. A Stress Chart can now be found under Exertion on the iPhone and Watch apps as well as via a Home Screen Widget, Lock Screen Widget, AND Complication (found on the Modular watch faces as a large rectangular complication). Stress is color coded and shown as low-blue, medium-orange, or red-high. Stress is calculated based on your heart rate and excludes periods of movement such as during a workout or just walking around since its intended to measure your body's state while resting.

The home screen of the Watch App has been completely redesigned bringing key features like Sleep Performance, Sleep Stages, Daily Heart Rate Analysis, Stress, and Energy and Macros to the watch!

The Energy Chart in Trends has been redesigned into a Grouped Bar Chart showing total Energy Burned vs Consumed per week. There is now a switch in Settings -> Design Customization if you prefer the old line chart.

A new Sleep Heart Rate Analysis Card has been added below Sleep Latency. The Sleep Heart Rate Analysis has always been in Athlytic and would only be shown where a pattern was detected - however it was shown under the Sleep Heart Rate Chart which made for bad UX when switching between Heart Rate, HRV, Respiratory Rate or Blood Oxygen Charts. So now it has its own stand alone card along with a depiction of your heart rate pattern. Note that as before, this card will only be shown if a discernible pattern is recognized during your sleep.

Added support for new Tag Types: Animal in Bed, Artificial Light, Child Care, Ear Plugs, High Carb, Nasal Strip, Vitamin C, and Vitamin D.

Under Today -> Energy, we now keep track of your weekly Net Energy, Energy Burned and Energy Consumed to be able to track alongside the new weekly Energy chart in trends.

Added FitnessSyncer as a sleep tracker choice.

A few other bug fixes and optimizations.

Thanks!

Quick update to add an alert to let users know that if Background App Refresh is not enabled for Athlytic, complications and widgets won't update regularly. You can turn on Background App Refresh by going to the iPhone's Settings App, then General, then Background App Refresh - then make sure the switch at the top is on, as well as for Athlytic.

Quick Minor Update:

Some users either aren’t logged into iCloud or have iCloud Drive turned on for various reasons. A big limitation of Apple Health on the watch is the limitation to only be able to query data only 7 days back. This presents a problem with a 60 day baseline for HRV and RHR which Athlytic has always relied on iCloud to pass from the iPhone to the watch.

Some users would occasionally see different recovery on their iPhone than on the watch, which almost was always related to their iCloud not being on. To get around this, I’ve added some logic using the Watch Connectivity API that will pass around this data and should prevent this issue (and save me some time answering emails =)).

Thanks!

3.5.1
2023-01-04
Fixed a bug which arose because the Apple Watch began saving in bed samples in addition to the iPhone. In Bed Times, Sleep Efficiency, and Sleep Latency should all look better now.

Also from last update:

This update features a redesigned in-workout heart rate experience on the watch. You will now, by default, see a colored HR bar chart at the top with a visual indicator of the current HR zone you are in at the bottom. If you prefer the old pulse animation you can switch back to it in settings. The new heart rate chart was also added to the workout summary and in workout history on the watch. Past Workouts on the Watch App is now accessible to the left of the Home Screen, the Settings screen has been moved to the far right (past start a workout).

You can now use the Apple Watch Ultra’s Action Button to start a workout in Athlytic! To configure it, go into the Apple Watch’s Settings App then Action Button and choose Athlytic and what workout you want to be the default workout type when you start one.

Added Reading, Breathwork, and Working Late Tags.

Added support for Utilitarian Large Complications for Recovery and Exertion. For example using the Nike Digital Watch Face, this is the 1 line of text complication at the bottom.

Complications should refresh faster now.

In Tag Analysis - the Recovery and Sleep comparison bar chart will now automatically load with your most tagged item.

Increased the range you can adjust heart rate zones.

Added support for tinted watch faces: Recovery, Exertion, Daily HRV Chart and Daily HR Chart Complications should now show foreground tinted color on tinted faces.

Fixed a bug where calories would show as kilojoules during a running or cycling workout.

Fixed an issue where the sample Athlytic saved on the watch for Cardio Fitness wouldn’t always show the same value when tapping on the workout in the iPhone.

Weekly Training Load Chart in Trends has been fixed so colors match all other HR zones in the app, and the wording below has been cleaned up to show that zones can be customized in Settings.

Other bug fixes and optimizations.

Quick update to fix a bug with Target Wake Time.

From the last update:

This update features Notifications now available in Athlytic. These notifications are opt in, and can be turned on by going into Settings in Athlytic, then Notifications.

(1) Daily Report will send out a notification of your Recovery and Target Exertion once your sleep and Recovery has been set.

(2) Target Bed Time will alert you when you are within 1 hour of your Target Bed Time in Athlytic.

(3) Health Alert will alert you when one of your Health Tab metrics is above/below its normal range.

(4) Target Exertion Reached will alert you when you have reached your Target Exertion for the day.

(5) Daily Tagging Reminder will pop up a sheet to remind you to tag what happened the day before.

Note that notifications are scheduled via a background task, which time is up to Apple to allocate based on how many apps you have using background tasks on your phone as well as how often you use Athlytic.

Also Redesigned Lock Screen Smaller Recovery and Exertion Widgets

Added support for kilojoules for my friends down under! You now see “Unit Customization” at the top of settings, tap on it to change to metric system or kilojoules.

Target Bed Time now factors in your average time awake. In other words if you alarm is set for 8am and your Target Sleep is 8 hours, if you average 30 minutes awake per night, instead of your Target Bed Time previously being midnight, it will now be 11:30pm.

Cardio Fitness when you tap on a workout will now match what was saved in Apple Health, otherwise if there is no value in Apple Health, Athlytic will calculate it.

Some other improvements and enhancements.

Mjt008,
Fantastic🥳
I very rarely have written reviews on apps, but I had to in this case. I signed up for the paid version last August, and since then this has become the first app I check every morning to see my recovery score, log my items from the day before, and compare with how I feel. It’s certainly modified my behaviors to try to improve my recovery and sleep performance, and the data from workouts using my Apple Watch is summarized in a fantastic and easy to understand way. My wife was hesitant at first, but now she is also obsessed with the app and uses it daily as well. The developer is responsive if you have any issues, and he’s consistently released new features and updates that have improved the overall experience. Widgets on iOS are great, and I’ve got a couple on my lock screen, and then the widget panel just off my Home Screen. I had debated Whoop for a long time, but couldn’t get past the cost of switching and the monthly membership model. In the end I decided I loved my Apple Watch and Athlytic provides me with essentially all the same information at a much more reasonable price point. I can’t praise this app and developer enough, thanks for the great experience!

Excited about Athlytic!
I’ve had an Apple Watch for years but got a whoop band earlier this year. The monthly subscription quickly became old- especially considering I was still wearing my Apple Watch for the Watch purposes and it can do everything the whoop does. Coming off of whoop, I was looking for something to track recovery and effort given throughout the day. Athlytic does everything and more! I’m glad I found this because I can use my watch but also have a powerful fitness tracker on my wrist now also. I’m also excited it is still early for this app so I’m looking forward to where it can go. The frequent updates are good because I feel they actually listen to what people are asking for.

If I had to change anything, I would say make the app more of its own. It looks similar to the Apple health app in some ways and I would like to see a fresh look just to separate itself more. Also, I love the new chart under the trend tab. The only thing is the recovery vs exertion tab is the only one you can press and slide to see more specific times. I think if all the charts were like this, it would be an even better experience. It would be nice to press and slide on heart rate throughout the day or workout to get a deeper insight. Overall, this app has everything and as mentioned earlier, I’m glad I found it early on and can’t wait to see it continue to improve and grow!
vbalaster,
Fantastic App!
I very rarely leave reviews for apps but this app is amazing. It puts most of your health data in ONE spot to review and gives suggestions about how to improve your health, sleep, readiness, and training. It’s called “Athlytic” but I would propose one doesn’t have to be an athlete to benefit from all the insights this app provides. To be honest, I used Welltory for several months before a random Redditor asked if that app or this one was better. I loved that Welltory also put so much health data in one place and almost paid a high subscription fee for it (on sale it was like, $60/year). However the Welltory’s UI was just terrible - extremely busy and difficult to read and find the information you wanted. It also gave a bunch of extraneous “tips” without the option to toggle them off.

Athlytic gives you just the right amount of information in a beautiful and VERY easy to understand format. I love love love this app. Highly recommend. I’m fact, I subscribed before the trial period was even over 😆.

Also, I’ve had a few questions here and there and the customer support has been prompt and helpful. Great app, highly recommend spending time and money on this app!
Brendan almost RN,
Amazing.
I have to say I have used, Garmin whoop, apples watches and everything else I could get my hands on. I loved Garmin but also love the simplicity of an Apple Watch and how it works into my day to day life. This app has connected me to the best of both worlds for Garmin and Apple. On long workout outs or weekends away I tend to use my Garmin watch.

Day to day workouts durning the week I use my Apple Watch. This app syncs both for me. It’s amazing.

I love the layout and simplicity of this app. Man it just brings recovery and exertion to a whole new level. Health and wellness are all about finding a good balance. The best endurance athletes in the world spend 80% of their workouts in lower zones of exertion and this app really helps me see where I am each day with my training. When to push a little more and when to let my body heal. This developer needs to be seen and this app needs the recognition it deserves. App is CONSTANTLY UPDATED. Great, great job guys. Keep up your amazing work.

Great analytics
The app gives such great insight on when to recover, when to keep pushing, how your workout affected your body that day, and what you should do to keep going based on the set training intensity you select. I will say that some of the analytics can get a bit in the weeds if you’re not an athlete or a fitness professional. But it can still greatly help even for the everyday person. Especially love that it pairs so well with Apple Health/Fitness apps and the Apple Watch. I also went one step further and downloaded a food tracking app that works well with apple health; this then auto updates in the app and tells you where you stand with calories in versus calories out (low key my favorite feature, so useful). Also enjoy the sleep insight and how I sleep is calculated into what level of effort (or exertion) I should aim for that day. Overall great app and definitely going to keep my subscription going on it.
Danbradley,
Best in class!
I have never felt the need to write a review for an app in the past, but this app deserves to be seen.

Over the years I have used several fitness devices long-term, Whoop, Garmin Forerunner 945 and Oura for sleep. I recently decided to give up Garmin and try Apple Watch to see how the data would fit my lifestyle. I was by no means impressed with Apple Watch as-is, thankfully I stumbled upon this app, and was blown away.

I have been using this app for 3 days so far, and I am very impressed with the data that is presented within the app itself. The overall metric reporting and presentation of data is similar to Whoop, which I love because it’s familiar. It’s very clean and the graphing is very nice, it even syncs with Cronometer and updates my caloric intake vs output.

The only critique that I have (being a designer myself), the design could use some tweaking to make it feel more premium and consistent. There are a lot of text heavy elements, and wasted space in sections with too much space between elements. This app could feel very premium with some minor graphic organization and updating of some data presentations.

Overall- I absolutely love this app, I will subscribe for the year, and it may just be the tool to keep me using Apple Watch as my main fitness wearable. Excited to see where the developers take this app!

So good!
Highly recommended for people who are working out daily or endurance athletes. Even if you don't work out daily, this is a great why you monitor how you recover and get an idea of what impacts recovery and causes you to feel sluggish. If you're coming from a band like Whoop, the biggest thing this offers is tracking of carbs and calories versus your caloric burn and helps you understand how calories in can help fuel recovery. I'm using LoseIT to track my meals, it syncs my micronutrients to HealthKit and Athlytic reads the data from there. My only suggestions for the app - Can we get a watch face widget or I think Apple calls them Complications, to display recovery percentage in the watch face? Also, can we get a journal feature like Whoop has? Something where I can check whether I've had alcohol, caffeine, melatonin, done yoga, etc and have a graph of what positively and negatively impacts recovery?
toritheswimmer,
Amazing!!!!
I have been using this app close to a year now and I absolutely love it! I tried WHOOP prior to using this and loved the additional data that it provided me, but had serious issues regarding data accuracy, customer service and the wearable itself. While using it I still wore my Apple Watch, so it felt redundant, but I had no idea that it tracked all of the same measurements I was just missing this app! Ever since downloading this app I feel so much more in tune with my own body and know how much I can push myself on any given day. I love data so having access to how my body is performing is a game changer for me!

The one thing I would love is the ability to change the sleep goal. I think mine is set at 7:30 per night and I would love to be able to change it to 8 hours or even more. (maybe i’m just missing a setting somewhere)
dugan22307,
Does most things well
I have been running this app side by side with both Welltory and AI Stress Monitor. Overall this is my favorite of the three. The analysis of sleep and recovery match the recovery that I feel, and I appreciate the exertion suggestions it provides My one complaint is that it doesn’t pick up heart rate from a heart rate chest strap in some applications. For me I ride Zwift with a chest strap, and because I don’t wear my Apple Watch it records zero exertion even though Strava and Apple Health record both the exercise event and the heart rate. Makes no sense to me and the developer has not provided an explanation.

Update: the developer contacted me and is helping me resolve my issue.

As in many things, Strava is the root of the issue. Strava does not play nice with Apple Health, and while Strava keeps raising prices and handling their PR in a very clumsy way, they can’t seem to sync with Apple.
ChicagoBrian,
Dramatically increases value of Apple Watch
If you have an Apple Watch and are even modestly interested in health and fitness tracking, this app is required. It takes data captured by your Apple Watch during sleep, exercise & regular life and overlays analysis, visualization, and reporting related to your exercise, sleep, and recovery. It is honestly much more robust and insightful than what Apple has designed themselves into Health/Fitness apps. This app has regular updates and what I especially appreciate is transparency on how metrics are calculated, what data was used, and what the different metrics mean. I previously used the Apple Watch and Whoop strap but this provides superior value for 1/12 the price of whoop. For less than the price of an Apple Watch band you can dramatically increase the value you get from the watch itself. Well worth the subscription.
