Description

[*Warning* Playing Frotz involves reading, thinking, and typing. If you just want to blow stuff up, this is not the app for you!]

Burned out on all the new-fangled graphics and dazzling eye candy on your shiny new iPhone or iPad? Nostalgic for a simpler time? Then take advantage of those crisp high-resolution fonts to relive the glory days of the Great Underground Empire, or play any of hundreds of great works from the Interactive Fiction archive.

Frotz lets you play hundreds of free works of Interactive Fiction (a.k.a. text adventure games) on your iPhone or iPad.

Frotz plays titles written in the Z-Machine format (which was invented by Infocom and was used to produce classic text adventures from the 80s such as the Zork Trilogy, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and Trinity), as well as glulx and TADS formats.

In the past couple of decades, text adventures have experienced a renaissance of sorts due to the efforts of a diverse Internet community of talented interactive fiction writers and fans. Many of these games are written using the same engine that powered Infocom's titles, thanks to the Inform compiler and authoring system created by Graham Nelson.

1.3

Frotz now comes with a huge collection of titles, the 255 top-rated works as scored by reviewers on the Internet Interactive Fiction Database at ifdb.tads.org. To avoid being overwhelming, a selection of 25 is available in Frotz's Story List initially. To enable more, you can use the built-in IFDB browser to read descriptions and reviews of other titles. Tapping on a file link will extract the story from Frotz's bundled collection and install it into the Story List.

Note that Frotz 1.3 can no longer install new games directly from the Internet as it against App Store policy to download interpreted content, but I plan to release new versions frequently with updated IFDB snapshots. You CAN still transfer new games (including Infocom titles if you have them) to Frotz over a local network from your computer using the built-in FTP server. You can also transfer saved games, and any previously installed titles will still be available after upgrade.

Other new features include:
- Preferences for story font size!
- Tap command prompt to bring up input helper menu
- Double-tap command prompt for command line history menu
- Tap and hold on game status line to magnify for readability
- Bug fixes in color and FTP transfer support
- Improved OS 3.0 compatibility

Please note that you can only change the font size of the main story font, not the status line. Because many games require a minimum number of columns, using a large font would require scrolling left and right, which turns out to be very cumbersome. Instead, you can now tap anywhere on the status line to magnify it if you have trouble reading it.
1.2
2009-04-16
- Preferences for text and background colors, font, and word completion
- Ability to transfer game files and saved games using built-in FTP server
- Lower memory usage
- Miscellaneous bug fixes

shaynemb,
The best
I am under the age of 20 meaning I wasn’t even alive during the age of interactive fiction when Infocom was actually a company. Yet most video games today don’t offer the player the random and sporadic thinking required to win, making those games boring and repetitive. I love reading as well and can’t get enough of a good story. When I discovered interactive fiction it satisfied both of those desires. So many of these games are extremely challenging and hold a unique story that always has something unique. These games take a lot of time and effort however this is the best app in the App Store I’ve ever had.
fritzfratzfrotz,
Wonderful app that could use a couple small updates
First off, let me say that Frotz has given me hours of enjoyment delving into so many different worlds created by the IF authors, and I’m so grateful to be able to experience all the creativity through it. There’s only two minor things keeping me from giving it a full five stars, one of which is lately there’s been a bug when I download a game it shows in my library, but with a stock image icon instead of the game’s own icon. This seems to happen when the game is in a zip file. The other thing is that I’d like to have a way to sort through games in the library other than the search bar, preferably a folder system that you can drop games into (make them your own based on type, progress, etc.)

Aside from that, this app is wonderful, and keep up the good work!
NotAsBigBen,
Fun to play, functional, some improvements can be made.
I have enjoyed Frotz for the most part. My only complaint is that many games are intended to be played with specific features that are not included here. For instance: The Dreamhold is intended to have a built in map that develops as you explore, which is not included. This made the game more difficult, however, I was able to finish (with some help from the interweb). Another example: Photopia is intended to be played with multicolor text which is not included here. I have not played much Photopia yet, so I'm not sure how this will affect gameplay. My experience has been that these problems make the games convenient, but never impossible. As for praise: I have had nothing but fun playing the games here, and the app moves smoothly. The catalog of games is very impressive and I can't wait to play them all!
anon69695959595,
Wonderful! (Question inside!)
This is a wonderful story telling game, I love it very much. Though some stories can be difficult without some sort of guide. Other than that I have a question. For the story, “Varicella” there is a command called “penis.” Me and my friend at every confused on what the purpose of this is, since it is one of the preset word. Ex being if I type x and space it will become examine. If I type pen, penis will show up. If you could perhaps give me the answer me and my friend are searching for, that would be great! Much love.
C J Richards,
A huge thank you
To the dev of this app. I love it, have used it for many years in ios and will continue to for as long as you support it.

2 suggestions:

1. Interface options.
If you ever get the itch, providing more choices in readability would be appreciated. The use of color to highlight key words, the old ios infocom treasures app did some pretty nice formatting things that you could look at, for improving this app.
Or not. I love this app as is, and would rather you keep it going as is, then develop it further, get burned out and stop supporting it at some point in the future. So it’s just a thought.

2. Add a “pro” version. Charge a few bucks for it, as an in app purchase, or whatever. Even if it offers no additional features. I will gladly toss some dollars your way, just as thanks for what you have already done.
Briarlock,
Great system
This app will open a whole new world to you. It's like having a Kindle app, but everything is free, and you can influence the books. There are thousands of interactive stories written over several decades. With the new update letting you play TADS games, I recommend Babel, Worlds Apart, Glowgrass, Sunset Over Savannah, She's Got a Thing for a Spring, Walker and Silhoutte, All Hope Abandon, Losing Your Grip, Once and Future, and The Legend Lives
textomb,
The Best App Ever
This app allows you to play the richest, best games out there, which shockingly are mostly free.

If you want to read amazing stories by great writers, solve puzzles, immerse yourself in first-class world building, and have thousands of gaming options at your fingertips, this is the way to go.
FarmBoy702,
Zork: Statue is missing
I love this app and I like to explore text adventure games. However, I found that, in ZORK, the statue is missing ( i.e. digging with the shovel in the sandy beach does nothing). That’s where it has been in previous versions of the game.

I also encountered minor bugs, such as treasure vanishing from inventory after the thief is dead or when you pass through a curtain.

I wound like to beat zork but am in able to because of the missing treasure issue.
CupO'Joe,
Your looking at your phone. There’s a Get Button.
Ok... so... I just download the app and all I can say is this: HOW DO I DONATE!! This is AWESOME!

I remember them, but not well enough to remember the details, so, I can enjoy them all over again!

THANK YOU.. and PLEASE let me know how to donate $$ to you. I so appreciate your efforts!
nable7,
Awesome! But game importing interface?
I love the app, that it’s free, and that it makes this kind of game available to me again. I remember these kinds of games from my early childhood… I haven’t managed to get any new games installed. It would be cool if the app had an app-get interface for importing new, compatible games.
